URGO Summer Research Phase 1 Applications Due February 17

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH/CREATIVE ACTIVITY PROGRAM: All disciplines welcome!
Phase 1 of the applications are due February 17th at 11:59 PM, so start talking with your faculty members to learn about what research or creative activity is going on in your department!
The URGO Summer Research/Creative Activity Program is an 11-week, on-campus program (May 19th – August 1st) where students are funded to conduct research with a faculty mentor. URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $6,000 stipend and housing discount while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $3,000 stipend and a housing discount.
URGO SUMMER RESEARCH/CREATIVE ACTIVITY ASSISTANTSHIPS
URGO also provides funding for students to work for a professor as a research assistant on an ongoing research project. This is a 100-hour commitment over the course of the summer and comes with a $1,500 stipend. This is an excellent opportunity to try out research for the first time or focus on a specific aspect of a research project.

Current AI Resources: Integration and Detection Workshop, February 12

Please join the eLearning team & CTL for a workshop on “Current AI Resources: Integration and Detection” on February 12, 12:30 to 1:30 pm. In this workshop, we will explore options in Moodle for tracking AI usage. We will also discuss how to integrate AI into assignments at various levels (from no AI use to full exploration of AI) and establish expectations for AI use in the classroom.

Interfaith Scholar Applications Now Open

The Interfaith Scholars program is a yearlong course and service learning opportunity taught by the Interfaith Institute’s Executive Director and Professor of Religion, Najeeba Syeed.

Interfaith Scholars will explore the religious diversity of the Augsburg student body, the wider Twin Cities community, and the United States by learning from guest speakers from religious communities, business professionals, and other leaders across various sectors. Students may also be engaged in community service learning, and participating in and attending events on behalf of the program. Participants will gain leadership skills by learning and practicing how to converse respectfully with others about what they believe, why it matters, and how it propels us to service in the world.

Students with any religious or spiritual worldview as well as students without a connection to a religious tradition are encouraged to apply.

Applications for the 2025-26 student cohort are now open.

Book Group: What Happened to You? Conversations on Trauma

Batalden Book Group for AU Staff & Faculty: We will read What Happened to You: Conversations on Trauma, Resilience, and Healing by Bruce Perry and Oprah Winfrey. The book group discussion will be held on Tuesday, March 25th from 3:30 – 5:00 (snacks provided). The discussion will be led by Prof. Mary Lowe (Batalden scholar) and Ellie Olson Director of AU’s CWC. Present Your Research at Zyzzogeton – Register by February 18

Augsburg’s annual Zyzzogeton Student Research Symposium showcases the work of over 50 undergraduate researchers in all academic disciplines and will take place on Tuesday, April 15, 3:00-4:30 PM in Hagfors Center. Students who have conducted research over the course of the last year and would like to present a poster should register using the link below by February 18.

You must have approval from your faculty mentor before registering for Zyzzogeton. If you do not have a formal abstract at this point, please provide a brief description of your research instead. You will have the opportunity to submit a final abstract/make final edits prior to the event. Abstracts will be published on the URGO website.

NOTE: If you’re planning to co-present with another student(s), only one of you needs to register. Be sure to list their names and emails and indicate that they will be co-presenters where specified on the form. All presenters will be included in event correspondence.

Study Spanish and Mexican Culture This Summer

Spend your summer immersed in the rich culture of Mexico!

Augsburg’s CGEE program offers an engaging and community-based summer experience with a focus on Spanish language and Mexican culture. Choose and/or combine courses from 3 1/2 week sessions.

All students earn the Global Competence Certificate (GCC) – a valuable addition to your resume – and can tailor their experience with specialized courses and internships in Spanish for Business, Spanish for Healthcare Professionals, Mexican Civilizations and Cultures, and Mexican Literature.

In addition to your coursework, you will:

Engage with a host family. And explore Mexico City and local archeological sites and museums.

Travel to Mexico City on an included program excursion

Learn from guest speakers who provide insights into history, culture, and social justice issues

Complete your Augsburg Experience requirement

Open Q&A Sessions on the Cloud ERP Project

What is the Cloud ERP Project, you ask? If you’re a student, faculty, or staff member, then this project will be changing how you interact with Augsburg online over the next few years—registering for classes, submitting grades, viewing payslips, and more.

The project website has more information on this initiative to unify and streamline our information systems across campus. Additionally, we are holding open Q&A sessions in person and via Zoom for you to learn more and to ask questions. Following a short slideshow about the project, the floor will be open for questions.

Meeting Today: Affinity Group for BIPOC Faculty

BIPOC professors teaching within predominately White Faculty groups can experience isolation and marginal belonging. This doesn’t have to be the norm. Join us on Tuesday, February 11th, in Hagfors 109 at 3:30-4:30 to connect, uplift, and empower each other. We will recognize the reality of our lived experiences as educators, fostering scholarship, teaching excellence, and professional growth while supporting one another. A form has been created to gauge your interest about recurring meeting times and interest, in particular if you can not make the first meeting.

We’ll go through an itinerary to highlight activities and also talk through course learning outcomes and objectives. Hello, my name is Ashley Wurster and I am currently a clinical psychology doctoral student at Augsburg University. I am conducting a research study about how episode patterns in schizophrenia may affect stigmatization levels among mental health practitioners and the general public in Minnesota, and I would like to include you in my research. The study will be completed exclusively online and consist of a survey about your demographics and your experiences with and attitudes on schizophrenia/severe mental illnesses. Join the Minnesota Private College Council for Day at the Capitol 2025, where you can advocate for increased support for low- and middle-income college students. Your legislators need to hear from you about the Minnesota State Grant program!

Time: 8:00 a.m.–1:30 p.m.

During Day at the Capitol, you’ll attend a Minnesota State Grant advocacy and lobbying training with student advocates from Augsburg and other Minnesota private colleges. Then you’ll meet with legislators and have lunch at the Capitol. The Minnesota Private College Council will host a Q&A session with public policy experts and policymakers and will provide everything you need to be a successful advocate. We will take the light rail from campus to and from the Capitol together. Plus, free lunch!

Annual Plant Sale This Thursday

FALL IN LOVE WITH A NEW PLANT!
The Biology Dept. Greenhouse is holding its annual plant sale.

Date: Thursday, February 13
Time: 10 a.m. — 2 p.m. (or sold out)
Where: Lobby of the Christensen Center

We’ll have easy-care houseplants such as goldfish vines, spiderworts and raindrop peperomia. We’ll also have lots of cacti and succulents, including some varieties not often seen on the market, like Somalian aloes. A select number of mature specimens will be for sale for those houseplant afficionados. Stocks of the most desirable species are limited, so get there early!

Cash, PayPal or Venmo accepted. Plant prices start at just $5. Funds raised directly support greenhouse operations and allow us to grow and care for our special plant collections.

Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives (MMIR) March | February 14 | 11 a.m.- 2 p.m

The annual Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives (MMIR) March will take place February 14 2025 from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. This march honors Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Men, Boys, Two-Spirit and LGBTQI+ Relatives. The march will begin at the Minneapolis American Indian Center and feature a variety of speakers from the community.

The 2025 MMIR March is a collaborative effort between the Minnesota Indian Women Sexual Assault Coalition, the Minneapolis American Indian Center, the Minnesota Indian Women’s Resource Center, the Indian Health Board of Minneapolis, the Native American Community Development Institute, Wakemup Productions, the Minnesota Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives Office, Minneapolis Public Schools American Indian Education, the Many Shields Society and the Little Earth Protectors.

Who owns history? And who is allowed to tell its stories? The student-written piece “Tian” centers around these fundamental questions. This conflict becomes clear when the audience is led through the life of romantic poet Karoline von Günderrode by two characters with two very different claims to Karoline’s story: Bettine von Arnim, contemporary and close friend of Karoline, who wants to paint a strong, feminist picture; and the Playwright whose goal is to create an enticing, heart-wrenching play. The audience finds themselves in the in-betweens of history, whilst being part of Karoline’s personal journey filled with struggles, doubt, and dreams.
