Last month, Augsburg University hosted the 30th Nobel Peace Prize Forum Minneapolis (NPPF). Over the Forum’s three days, more than 1,200 individuals took part in workshops, plenaries, breakout sessions, and arts activities centered on the theme “The Paradox of Peace.”
This was the final Forum bearing the Nobel name, and building on our 30 years of experience, there is strong interest in continuing to convene an annual international forum at Augsburg to showcase our commitments to global perspectives, living faith, active citizenship, and meaningful work.
As we look toward the future, we want your ideas for what a redesigned Forum might look and feel like here at Augsburg. How will a “signature event” that expresses our institutional commitments be designed to align with students interests and curriculum across a range of departments?
Please share your voice and ideas with us. Click on the survey link below that best describes your role at Augsburg:

The screening will be on October 23rd at 6 pm. The event will be in the John Roach Center – Room 126 on St. Thomas’s campus.

Each year URGO offers $1,000 research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. These grants require 100 hours of research over the course of the academic year and are a great way to ease into research or to continue work on an existing project.
The application is available at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) at the “on-campus research” page. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals in the fall. The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly and will begin reviewing proposals September 10th.
If you have any questions about undergraduate research opportunities, please contact Kirsten O’Brien at obrienk@augsburg.edu or x1446

URGO offers up to $850 in travel funding for Augsburg undergraduates who have been accepted to present research at a professional conference. These funds can mitigate the high costs of travel such as airfare and lodging, and can contribute to students’ professionalization.
The application is available at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) at the “conference travel” page. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so students are encouraged to work with their research mentor to submit a travel application as soon as possible after receiving acceptance to a conference. The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly throughout the school year and will begin reviewing applications September 10th.

There are several unscrupulous businesses out there who attempt to sell you outrageously priced toner over the phone. We have already gotten a call from someone (mis)representing themselves as our printer vendor – Marco, and referencing our fleet of Sharp copiers.
They may start with asking you what is the model or ID# of the copier near your desk. They may say they have extra stock of the toner you need or the price is due to increase. They may offer to ship you a toner on trial. Regardless of what they say, DO NOT give them any information. All you need to know is that you get toner for your copier or printer by either calling the Copy Center at extension x1054 or emailing at copyctr@augsburg.edu.
You will NEVER need to purchase toner for machines in your area.
A quick way to ditch these “toner phoners” is to tell them you would like to transfer them to the person in the organization who purchases toner – they will hang up before you can transfer them!

What do words like “founding” mean at a place like Augsburg? If, as a Lutheran institution, we believe in the concept of “semper reformanda” (always reforming), then shouldn’t we say that Augsburg has had multiple “foundings”—not only physically, but intellectually and theologically?
Augsburg history professor Phil Adamo will explore these questions in the 2018 Heritage Day Talk, offering examples from his new book, Hold Fast to What is Good: A History of Augsburg University in 10 Objects, written for the upcoming celebration of Augsburg’s 150th anniversary.

Democracy Augsburg Teach-in: What’s at Stake on the Sixth!?
The Midterm Elections.
If you aren’t aware of what the midterm elections are, no worries! Here at the Sabo Center, we broke it down into an easily understandable, short guide:
U.S. presidents serve four year terms. In between these terms there is a midterm election. Participation during these elections tend to be lower than general elections, but they are very important!
During the midterm election:
Members of the U.S House of Representatives are up for election.
Most U.S. states elect their governors.
In addition, the political landscape may change because the president’s party may lose seats in both houses of Congress; this might change which party is in control of the legislature. This, in turn, will impact the president’s ability to pursue an agenda during the second half of his/her term.
Augsburg University’s Sabo Center for Democracy and Citizenship welcomes everyone to a presentation by political science professor Andrew Aoki, followed by a discussion about the midterm elections. This will take place on October 19th, at Oren Gateway Center – room 100, between 4:30-5:30 p.m.
The 2018 midterm elections will bring forward many important issues to discuss and vote on. Topics at “What’s at Stake on the Sixth?” might include:
Donald Trump’s presidency
Immigration
Healthcare
Marijuana
International Affairs
Let’s talk: consequences, redistricting, implications for control of Congress, the presidency, presidential-congressional relations, Supreme Court, and myriad public policies.
If you want to discuss these or other issues, and to understand the importance of the midterm elections, we will see you at What’s at Stake on the Sixth.

For the MEA event that Admissions is hosting on campus this week Thursday, and Friday, some of our lots will be closed and reserved for the guests. Beginning Thursday morning, at 6:00am, lots A and G will be barricaded and signed for the guests to use throughout their event time. Friday evening at 10:00pm, the barricades will be taken down and the lots will be available again to the authorized permit holders. If you typically park in those lots, the institution would like to encourage you to use lots D, L, M, or O. If you are able to use public transportation for your commute to work these days, that would also help reduce the volume of vehicles on campus as well. If you are a carpool permit holder at Augsburg, you will have received an email with additional parking options as well.
With large events such as this one, and the limited parking space we have, please anticipate challenges finding parking during these times.
Thank you!

Great news! MEA is happening today and tomorrow, and Augsburg is hosting open house events for more than 200 students and their families on Thursday and Friday, October 18 and 19. If you see folks on campus looking like they’re not sure where they’re going, please take a minute to greet them. My name is Janet (pronounced Juh-Nette) and I’m the Campus Election Engagement Fellow at Augsburg this year. My primary duties are to help folks register to vote, inform folks on their voting options and why they should vote, and to get them to actually go vote! I’ve hosted a couple registration drives and participated in door-knocking on campus. Many students are aware of the importance of voting, especially in this midterm election, but there are also a good amount who don’t care to vote, don’t understand how to vote, or just haven’t had the opportunity to learn more about voting and its implications.
I am hosting a workshop called “Where Do You Stand? Why You Should Vote in the Midterm Election” tomorrow, Thursday October 18th from 6pm-7:30pm in the Marshall Room. The link to the Facebook event is down below. The floor is open for students to share what issues they feel strongly about and how that aligns with political platforms. For example, if students say that they don’t care about politics and don’t want to be involved, but they believe that folks have the right to do what they want with their bodies, their beliefs align with the political candidate who is pro-choice and is pushing for abortion to be legalized. I hope that with this workshop, students will recognize that politics will affect them regardless of their participation.
One final thing about the event- I am intending for this event to be just for students, no staff or faculty. I want this space to be open and intentionally for students, especially Students of Color. Students don’t have to have political experience. Also, for students who are not able to vote due to immigration status or other reasons, please feel free to come by! Your voice matters and we’d love to hear you. There are more ways to be politically and socially involved than through voting!
