MN Responding to Global Recycling Challenges

submitted by greena@augsburg.edu

China’s recent shift in policy regarding recyclable material has many state and local governments reexamining how they manage a growing influx of plastics, glass, and other recyclables. But Minnesota’s public and private sectors have made strategic investments in recycling over the past 30-plus years. The state has an opportunity to be a leader, as we are seeking to increase the number of businesses that use recycled materials. Minnesotans wondering about shifting world markets need to stay the course — keep recycling, but recycle right. Learn more by visiting the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency’s web site and searching for “recycle more.” (https://www.pca.state.mn.us/waste/recycle-more)

While Minnesotans do better than most parts of the country at proper recycling, unrecyclable materials in recycling containers is still a huge problem. Recycled materials that are “contaminated’ with trash and the like create inefficiencies and reduce profitability for recycling facilities.

How can you help?

Avoid “wish-cycling” — Only include materials your hauler will accept in your bin. Don’t just throw it in and assume a processing facility will sort it out!

Don’t put plastic bags, garden hoses, toys, syringes, or diapers in your recycling container.

Do not use your recycling bin as a garbage overflow.

At Augsburg, make sure all plastics are CLEAN and EMPTY (no liquids or food) before they go into the BLUE BINS. A full list of all recyclable materials can be found on the Environmental Stewardship website: http://www.augsburg.edu/green/waste_reduction/recycling-guide/

$35 for desk and office chair

submitted by pancoasa@augsburg.edu

Gently used desk and chair for sale. I’m moving in about three weeks and don’t want to bring them with, so I’m hoping to sell them. The desk is from Menard’s and has a black finish and the chair is black as well. Something to note on the chair is there is a tear in the seat cushion, but it is not very big and doesn’t really have an effect on the chair. The approximate dimensions of the desk are 17.5 inches long, 28.75 inches high, and 29.75 inches wide. Please contact me at pancoasa@augsburg.edu with any questions/if you’re interested. Thank you!

Augsburg is hosting MN Private College Week June 25-29

submitted by asfeldk@augsburg.edu

You may notice an influx of prospective students and their families on campus June 25-29 as Augsburg University hosts families for Minnesota Private College Week!

Lot G is reserved all week for Admission guests, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, so please plan on parking elsewhere this week. Thank you in advance for all you do to help us recruit future Auggies!

If you see a guest during this time that looks lost, please assist them. The idea of this week is to welcome families to campus, introduce them to students and faculty, and share with them what Minnesota private colleges and universities have to offer. Our introductory tours and informational meetings can serve as a first step to help students discover just what they are looking for in a college — especially if they are early in the search.

There will be an open house from 9:30 am – 12:00 pm and from 2:00 – 4:30 pm each day that week, and most of the event will be held in the Hagfors Center.

Please contact the Office of Admissions if you have any questions. We are excited to have this large event on campus this summer to help grow the Augsburg community, and appreciate your help and patience.

submitted by mulvihil@augsburg.edu

I am pleased to announce several changes designed to better align and integrate international education operations at Augsburg. All are effective immediately.

International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS)
ISSS reporting lines will shift from Student Affairs to Academic Affairs, permitting closer collaboration in global exchange programs between ISSS and the Center for Global Education & Experience (CGEE). Jim Trelstad-Porter, the Director of ISSS, will report to the Assistant Provost of Global Education & Experience. Angela Bonfiglio, the ISSS International Student Advisor, will move to a year-round position and continue reporting to the Director of ISSS. Her responsibilities will be split between her role as international student advisor and a new role recruiting non-Augsburg students for CGEE’s semester programs.

In addition to existing responsibilities for advising Augsburg students who wish to study abroad, Maren Stoddard Mack will take over coordination of off-campus undergraduate programs led by Augsburg faculty (a.k.a. faculty-led programs). Peggy Johnson will continue to coordinate graduate and nursing faculty-led programs.

As mentioned above, Angela Bonfiglio will begin dedicating half her time to recruiting semester-long CGEE students from other colleges and universities. Non-Augsburg students bring additional diversity and dynamism to CGEE programs, and they produce additional revenue.

Norway Hub
The Norway Hub will now be more intentionally linked to Augsburg’s broader international education efforts, with the reporting line for Bettine Hermanson, the hub’s Managing Director, shifting to the Assistant Provost of Global Education & Experience.

Congratulations to two Fall Gilman Scholarship Winners

submitted by dvorak@augsburg.edu

Augsburg students Kitana Holland and Erika Idrovo-Cuesta awarded U.S. Department of State’s Gilman International Scholarship to study abroad!

The U.S. Department of State is pleased to announce that Kitana Holland and Erika Idrovo-Cuesta from Augsburg University are selected to receive the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study or intern abroad this fall 2018. Both students are seniors; Kitana is majoring in Sociology, while Erika is majoring in Political Science/Public Policy. They will both be studying this fall on CGEE’s own semester program in Namibia: Nation Building, Globalization and Decolonizing the Mind.

Gilman Scholars receive up to $5,000 to apply towards their study abroad or internship program. The Gilman scholarship supports American undergraduate students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad and, since 2001, has enabled more than 24,000 outstanding Americans of diverse backgrounds to engage in a meaningful educational experience abroad. The program has successfully broadened U.S. participation in study abroad, while emphasizing countries and regions where fewer Americans traditionally study. The Gilman Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and is supported in its implementation by the Institute of International Education (IIE).

Since 2008, fifty four Augsburg students have received Gilman scholarships, totaling $214,000.
