Augsburg University Football Team will host a Marrow Donor Drive on Tuesday, April 16th during the hours of 10 am to 3 pm. There will be tables to register in front of the Kennedy Center, Christensen Center, & Hagfors.
Last year, we were able to secure 345 registered donors with 3 matches from our community. We would like to reach a goal of 500 registered donors on that day.

Augsburg celebrates the creativity and scholarship of undergraduate students with its annual Zyzzogeton Student Research Symposium. The symposium falls at the end of each academic year and is a culmination of achievement featuring work across departments.
This year Zyzzogeton will feature posters from more than 50 undergraduate researchers in the science, social science and humanity disciplines.
Zyzzogeton will take place on Tuesday, April 16, 3 – 4:30pm in Hagfors Center. There will be a convocation schedule for that day and no classes scheduled during the event time, so we hope that all students, faculty and staff are able to attend!

Hello Auggies! I am a graduate student seeking participants for a research study. I am exploring how one’s ability to recognize and regulate their own and others’ emotions may relate to feelings of depression and social disconnect. Participation in this study will involve completing a series of behavioral health inventories and a demographic screener that will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. These inventories will ask if you have experienced symptoms of depression or loneliness and ask how intensely you experience your everyday emotions. Following completion of these inventories, participants will complete a test online that will walk participants through a variety of different tasks, such as recognition of facial expressions and implied social meanings. This test will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. All participation in this study is done online from the comfort of your own home. Students are invited to participate in this study if you: (1) are between the ages of 18 and 31; (2) have not been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, or a personality disorder; (3) have not experienced an interpersonally traumatic life event (i.e., assault by another human being); and (4) are not currently experiencing a major health concern (i.e., life threatening illness/injury or significant transplant/removal surgery).
For your time, participants will be entered into a random lottery drawing for one of three $100 Amazon gift cards!

Hello my name is Munira Jama. I’m an undergraduate student in the Health, Physical Education and Exercise Science department at Augsburg University, alongside my co-investigators, Moyin Abiodun, Annika Rudolph, and Natalie Delgado. We are conducting a study as part of our HPE 303L Advanced Human Anatomy and Physiology lab under the supervision of our advisor Tara Mader, Ph.D; a professor in the Health, Physical Education and Exercise Science department.
We would like to invite you to participate in a research study on the effects of caffeine on reaction time. You were selected as a possible participant because you are a student at Augsburg University. Please read this entire email before agreeing to participate. If you have any questions now or later, you may contact any of the researchers or our advisor.
If you agree to be in this study, you’ll be weighed prior to starting the study, drink caffeine, and have your reaction time measured. In total, participation time will be approximately 40 minutes. Caffeine doses will be administered within safe limits depending on participants weight (3 mg per kg) there will be no abnormal side effects.

The Pan Asian Banquet is an annual event in the Spring that commemorates all Pan Asian-identified students and their achievements. This event will be funded by PASS, Hmong Women Together, and the Augsburg Asian Student Association. The Solar Eclipse is TODAY. Join us outside Hagfors Center on the patio from 1pm – 3pm to watch as the Moon moves in front of the Sun. Here in Minnesota, about 75% of the Sun will be blocked by the Moon, with maximum coverage occurring around 2pm. We will have several different Sun-safe viewing options available (weather permitting), including solar telescopes, eclipse glasses, a sunspotter, and more! If it’s cloudy and we can’t observe the Sun ourselves, you can still join us to watch the NASA livestream of the eclipse.
If you miss this chance TODAY… you will be graduated or even retired when the next eclipse happens in North America (August 23, 2044). Thank you to Physics Faculty Katrina Marslender and Steve Brehmer for organizing this event.

Milo Schield, faculty Emeritus in the department of Business Administration, is giving a paper (Statistical Literacy: Quantitative Rhetoric for the 21 Century) at the 2024 AAC&U conference on General Education in their “Innovation and Emerging Ideas” session Friday April 12. Schield is teaching Statistical Literacy at New College of Florida and online at the University of New Mexico. Statistical literacy is designed for data consumers. It has less than a 30% overlap with traditional statistics courses which are designed for data producers. Statistical literacy studies how everyday statistics are constructed and manipulated. It doesn’t use computer software or Algebra. It has a strong focus on the use of ordinary English to describe and compare rates and percentages (conditional probabilities) presented in statements, tables and graphs. It deals with disparities and how they can be changed by the context (what is taken into account) without taking a position on whether these disparities are due to discrimination. This course is being required for graduate students in statistics at the University of New Mexico. Students like this math-English critical thinking course. Most agree or strongly agree that Statistical Literacy should be required of all college students for graduation. Kendall-Hunt published Schield’s Statistical Literacy textbook in 2023.

There are no words to describe the passing of Dr. Jennie Diaz. The Education Department is working hard to support Augsburg students during this time and also grieving the loss of their beloved friend and colleague. After asking our colleagues in the Education Department what we could do to support them during this difficult time, a meal train surfaced. So, we created a meal train and thought we would share it with Department Chairs so different departments or individuals could have an opportunity to volunteer.
For the dates listed:
Tuesdays would be a meal for 8-10 people to drop off at noon (a fridge, microwave, coffee maker are available)
dietary restrictions: no pork, caffeine is split — two members are fasting for Ramadan
cold or reheat works best as folks teach across the full day and late into the evening
homemade or delivery is all deeply appreciated.
Thursdays would be dropping off dessert, snacks, or beverages (same details as above)
Also, anyone can donate gift cards for Grubhub or DoorDash — the Education Department could have the option to order in what they need as well. But they prefer to just have the food if possible as it is one less thing they have to manage with all these are dealing with. Thank you and we are grateful for your help.

Luke Omodt, a junior majoring in physics and chemistry, has been named a Goldwater Scholar, which is the top STEM award in the country. Goldwater named 438 scholars across the country, seven of whom come from MN colleges and universities. Luke is currently doing computational materials science research with Professor Hickox-Young in physics and will be working with him this summer funded by Dean and Amy Sundquist. In the past Luke conducted research with Professor Dasgupta in physics and at the U of M and Cornell University. Congratulations Luke!

Congratulations to Emma Joswiak-McLaughlin for being awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Bulgaria! Emma is a senior graduating this coming May with a degree in Secondary Education: Communication Arts and Literature. She is heavily involved in the Augsburg community as a member of the National Communication Studies honor society, Lambda Pi Eta, and the National Education Association’s Aspiring Educators Club. Emma has also worked for Augsburg’s Writing Center for two years as a tutor and is currently student-teaching at Southwest High School in Minneapolis. To prepare for her Fulbright grant, Emma has been volunteering at a number of animal rescue organizations, learning Bulgarian in her spare time, and trying not to poison her loved ones with her attempts at cooking Bulgarian cuisine. Kudos to Emma!

Elizabeth Goff ’25 is majoring in psychology and has a double minor in studio art and religion. She won the Critical Language Scholarship Spark, which teaches a full year of a language critical to the U.S. Over the summer Elizabeth will be studying Russian virtually. Only 10% of applicants win the award nationwide. She hopes to use this new knowledge to help her with her research in the future. Congratulations Liz!

The Augsburg Biology Department’s rooftop greenhouse grows an appreciation for and deeper understanding of the plants of our planet. The greenhouse is open to the Augsburg campus community on the first Thursday of every month during the semester, from noon to 3pm. The Augsburg community is invited to come see what we’ve got growing on, enjoy the tropical atmosphere and marvel at hundreds of plant species from all over the world.

On Tuesday, April 9, Kristen Chamberlain, Associate Professor of Communication Studies, Film, and New Media, will share her story in the next installment of the “Uncovering Vocation Series.” Uncovering Vocation is co-sponsored by the Christensen Center for Vocation.
Kristen earned her PhD in Communication Studies from North Dakota State University in 2007. She has been teaching a variety of classes as part of the Department of Communication Studies, Film, and New Media since the fall of 2007. Kristen is particularly passionate about environmental communication and has identified as an environmentalist since 9th grade. She is also always ready to talk about the media, favorite books, and cats.

The Augsburg Biology Department’s rooftop greenhouse grows an appreciation for and deeper understanding of the plants of our planet. The greenhouse is open to the Augsburg campus community on the first Thursday of every month during the semester, from noon to 3pm. The Augsburg community is invited to come see what we’ve got growing on, enjoy the tropical atmosphere and marvel at hundreds of plant species from all over the world.

Augsburg University Football Team will host a Marrow Donor Drive on Tuesday, April 16th during the hours of 10 am to 3 pm. There will be tables to register in front of the Kennedy Center, Christensen Center, & Hagfors.
Last year, we were able to secure 345 registered donors with 3 matches from our community. We would like to reach a goal of 500 registered donors on that day.

Luke Omodt, a junior majoring in physics and chemistry, has been named a Goldwater Scholar, which is the top STEM award in the country. Goldwater named 438 scholars across the country, seven of whom come from MN colleges and universities. Luke is currently doing computational materials science research with Professor Hickox-Young in physics and will be working with him this summer funded by Dean and Amy Sundquist. In the past Luke conducted research with Professor Dasgupta in physics and at the U of M and Cornell University. Congratulations Luke!

Congratulations to Emma Joswiak-McLaughlin for being awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Bulgaria! Emma is a senior graduating this coming May with a degree in Secondary Education: Communication Arts and Literature. She is heavily involved in the Augsburg community as a member of the National Communication Studies honor society, Lambda Pi Eta, and the National Education Association’s Aspiring Educators Club. Emma has also worked for Augsburg’s Writing Center for two years as a tutor and is currently student-teaching at Southwest High School in Minneapolis. To prepare for her Fulbright grant, Emma has been volunteering at a number of animal rescue organizations, learning Bulgarian in her spare time, and trying not to poison her loved ones with her attempts at cooking Bulgarian cuisine. Kudos to Emma!

Elizabeth Goff ’25 is majoring in psychology and has a double minor in studio art and religion. She won the Critical Language Scholarship Spark, which teaches a full year of a language critical to the U.S. Over the summer Elizabeth will be studying Russian virtually. Only 10% of applicants win the award. She hopes to use this new knowledge to help her with her research in the future. Congratulations Liz!

Hello Auggies! I am a graduate student seeking participants for a research study. I am exploring how one’s ability to recognize and regulate their own and others’ emotions may relate to feelings of depression and social disconnect. Participation in this study will involve completing a series of behavioral health inventories and a demographic screener that will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. These inventories will ask if you have experienced symptoms of depression or loneliness and ask how intensely you experience your everyday emotions. Following completion of these inventories, participants will complete a test online that will walk participants through a variety of different tasks, such as recognition of facial expressions and implied social meanings. This test will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. All participation in this study is done online from the comfort of your own home. Description: Independent Colleges and Universities that focus on the liberal arts often have a mission and an academic infrastructure that supports teaching improvement, and it should be celebrated! Yet, more can be done. This session draws from a multi-institutional observational study covering more than 700 higher education courses in a range of contexts, from regional public universities to highly ranked private universities, from small liberal arts colleges to large flagship universities. Connected to her 2023 book, published by Harvard Education Press, Great College Teaching: Where It Happens and How to Foster It Everywhere, Corbin Campbell will map the terrain, discussing teaching improvement within a spectrum of academic contexts, across multiple disciplines, and for various course settings. Dr. Campbell will describe the best practices of exemplary teaching institutions, in which evidence-based practices such as equity-based and culturally relevant teaching support student learning. She will also describe policies and cultures necessary to prioritize teaching and promote faculty development.

We are excited to introduce the selected Peace Scholars for the 2024-2025 academic school year. Through a vigorous application and interview process, Sara Sirag and Anna Hudak, have shown that they are the strongest candidates to this program, and we are proud to know they will be representing Augsburg University while in Norway.
Alongside other Peace Scholars from our Lutheran sister sites (Concordia College, Luther College, Pacific Lutheran College and St. Olaf College), these two students will participate in the annual summer Peace Scholars program in Norway, designed to deepen students’ understanding of the central issues and theories regarding conflict, war and peace, as well as attend the University of Oslo International Summer School.

Fluent in Spanish? Be a Debate Judge for the Spanish Debate League
The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, is looking for Spanish-speaking adults to judge our Spanish Debate League. This program helps middle and high school students build confidence, grow their academic skills, improve their fluency, and connect with other Spanish speakers in the Twin Cities.
*NO DEBATE EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED, BUT YOU MUST BE FLUENT IN SPANISH!*
You will earn $55 for each tournament you judge. We will provide transportation if necessary.
Tournaments will happen at the following dates and times:
Thurs. 3/28, Roosevelt HS, 4-7 PM
Thurs. 4/11, South HS(tentative location), 4-7 PM
Thurs. 4/18, Highland Park HS(tentative location), 3:30-7:30 PM
Both Championship tournaments will be held at Augsburg University in late April/early May, with undetermined dates.

Hello Auggies! I am a graduate student seeking participants for a research study. I am exploring how one’s ability to recognize and regulate their own and others’ emotions may relate to feelings of depression and social disconnect. Participation in this study will involve completing a series of behavioral health inventories and a demographic screener that will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. These inventories will ask if you have experienced symptoms of depression or loneliness and ask how intensely you experience your everyday emotions. Following completion of these inventories, participants will complete a test online that will walk participants through a variety of different tasks, such as recognition of facial expressions and implied social meanings. This test will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. All participation in this study is done online from the comfort of your own home. Students are invited to participate in this study if you: (1) are between the ages of 18 and 31; (2) have not been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, or a personality disorder; (3) have not experienced an interpersonally traumatic life event (i.e., assault by another human being); and (4) are not currently experiencing a major health concern (i.e., life threatening illness/injury or significant transplant/removal surgery).
For your time, participants will be entered into a random lottery drawing for one of three $100 Amazon gift cards!

Description: Independent Colleges and Universities that focus on the liberal arts often have a mission and an academic infrastructure that supports teaching improvement, and it should be celebrated! Yet, more can be done. This session draws from a multi-institutional observational study covering more than 700 higher education courses in a range of contexts, from regional public universities to highly ranked private universities, from small liberal arts colleges to large flagship universities. Connected to her 2023 book, published by Harvard Education Press, Great College Teaching: Where It Happens and How to Foster It Everywhere, Corbin Campbell will map the terrain, discussing teaching improvement within a spectrum of academic contexts, across multiple disciplines, and for various course settings. Dr. Campbell will describe the best practices of exemplary teaching institutions, in which evidence-based practices such as equity-based and culturally relevant teaching support student learning. She will also describe policies and cultures necessary to prioritize teaching and promote faculty development.

Sessions may be 60 minutes or 105 minutes.

We are excited to introduce the selected Peace Scholars for the 2024-2025 academic school year. Through a vigorous application and interview process, Sara Sirag and Anna Hudak, have shown that they are the strongest candidates to this program, and we are proud to know they will be representing Augsburg University while in Norway.
Alongside other Peace Scholars from our Lutheran sister sites (Concordia College, Luther College, Pacific Lutheran College and St. Olaf College), these two students will participate in the annual summer Peace Scholars program in Norway, designed to deepen students’ understanding of the central issues and theories regarding conflict, war and peace, as well as attend the University of Oslo International Summer School.
