Street Closure on Wednesday

submitted by norland@augsburg.edu

On the morning of Wednesday, November 24, Augsburg will close Butler Place and 23rd Avenue to allow for delivery of materials for the Athletic Dome. The dome is scheduled to go up on Monday and Tuesday, November 29 and 30.

Snow Removal Procedure

As winter approaches, we would like to remind members of the community about our snow removal procedure. We will remove snow from parking lots, city streets, and sidewalks in that order. Whenever snow removal is necessary, our goal is to have it done by 7:50 a.m.

Anyone who sees an icy patch on campus should report it to DPS (extension 1717). Facilities Management will then dispatch someone to treat it. In addition, buckets of salt are available at most main entrances to buildings.

Air Filtration

We continue to operate HEPA filters in classrooms, common spaces, and in offices in buildings with central HVAC systems. In buildings with central HVAC, we continue to use MERV-13 filters circulating fresh air 24 hours a day.

No Facilities Blog Next Week

There will be no Facilities blog post for the week of November 29.

Solar and Carbon Neutrality Resolution

submitted by tinsleym@augsburg.edu

On 11/17/2021, ADSG passed the Solar and Carbon Neutrality Resolution proposed by EAC. The Environmental Action Committee along with the Environmental Stewardship Committee have been advocating for the implementation of solar panels on campus for years now. The goal of this resolution is to pressure administration and our institution to prioritize our carbon neutrality goals (which includes on campus solar installations) in the midst of a climate crisis, and to include student’s voices in sustainability-related initiatives around campus.

Big shout out to previous EAC officers for making such great progress. Thanks to everyone that helped write this resolution and huge thanks to all of you spreading the word about the work we do. Let’s keep demanding and advocating for these (necessary) changes!

Student Stress and Coping Study

submitted by mccoyerp@augsburg.edu

Between the COVID-19 pandemic, political turmoil, and growing racial injustice in our country, the past year and a half have been full of unique challenges. We invite you to participate in a study examining student experiences and mental health during the pandemic and following the murder of George Floyd.

To better understand student experiences and mental health during this time, sociology professor James Vela-McConnell is conducting a study of current, degree-seeking undergraduate and graduate students. This study involves a 20-to-30-minute, mostly multiple-choice online questionnaire which can be completed at your convenience. Participation in the questionnaire will be completely confidential, and automatically enter you into a raffle for one of three $100 gift cards, one of six $50 gift cards, or one of eight $25 gift cards from Target. A report based on this study may also be shared with the Center for Wellness and Counseling at Augsburg to allow them to better serve the mental health needs of students.

Please note that the study will close on November 24.

Fund Pizza Parties & Load the Bus

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide academic competitive debate programming to more than 1,000 Twin Cities middle and high school students.

In-person programming is so important to support students’ mental health and their ability to connect with others. It’s worth it- but we expect costs to grow in the next year. Food costs have increased, and transportation already costs 3x what it did in 2019. That’s why our goal is to raise $50,000 before 2022 begins!

Join the great Minnesota day of giving by showing your support to debate!

The Impact of Your One-Time Gift:

$25 Covers the entry fee for one novice to attend their first high school tournament
$50 Helps compensate one alum for judging at a debate tournament
$75 Outfits one team’s rookie and novice members with a debate supply starter kit
$100 Funds a pizza recruitment party

Your Monthly Gift’s Yearly Impact:

$25/monthly Sponsors an experienced high schooler to become an assistant coach
$50/monthly Provides food for 100+ competitors at a Community Debate program
$75/monthly Provides camp tuition for a high schooler
$100/monthly Supports a Community Program debate coach’s stipend

Whether you make a one-time or monthly gift, you’ll help support our programs as we move into 2022. Any gift of any amount helps. And with the new CARES Act, you can claim a charitable donation deduction of up to $300, even if you don’t itemize. Make a donation.

Help our growing programs succeed as we return to in-person tournaments with safety and fun in mind. Support our Give to the Max campaign today!

The Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Summer Enrichment Program is a six-week summer program, held in Washington, DC, designed to provide undergraduate students with a deeper appreciation of current issues and trends in international affairs, a greater understanding of career opportunities in international affairs, and the enhanced knowledge and skills to pursue such careers. Conducted by the Center for Talent Innovation (CTI), The Power of Belonging: What It Is and Why It Matters in Today’s Workplace is the first of its kind to define, measure, and quantify what it means to belong at work—with insights into race, gender, ethnicity, generation, and other demographic identities.

Together, we will explore CTI’s findings and how to create work cultures where everyone belongs.

Learning Outcomes
Learn about how different identities feel they belong
Identify new options for creating cultures of belonging
Become more conscious of how your own behaviors unintentionally reinforce unproductive dynamics

Public Health Advice as Thanksgiving Approaches

submitted by norland@augsburg.edu

COVID-19 case rates remain high in our region. Even off campus in stores and other venues where it is not required, please consider wearing your mask indoors to help limit the spread of the virus.

Remember that as someone involved in higher education—as a faculty or staff member or as a student—you are eligible for a COVID-19 booster shot at least six months after your second dose of Pfizer or Moderna or two months after your first dose of Johnson & Johnson. Learn more at https://www.health.state.mn.us/diseases/coronavirus/vaccine/basics.html#booster.

If you are traveling for Thanksgiving, especially if you will be around vulnerable people, please consider dialing back activity now and getting tested prior to gathering with others. Remember that any gathering increases the risk of infection for everyone.
