Street Closure on Wednesday

On the morning of Wednesday, November 24, Augsburg will close Butler Place and 23rd Avenue to allow for delivery of materials for the Athletic Dome. The dome is scheduled to go up on Monday and Tuesday, November 29 and 30.

Snow Removal Procedure

As winter approaches, we would like to remind members of the community about our snow removal procedure. We will remove snow from parking lots, city streets, and sidewalks in that order. Whenever snow removal is necessary, our goal is to have it done by 7:50 a.m.

Anyone who sees an icy patch on campus should report it to DPS (extension 1717). Facilities Management will then dispatch someone to treat it. In addition, buckets of salt are available at most main entrances to buildings.

Air Filtration

We continue to operate HEPA filters in classrooms, common spaces, and in offices in buildings with central HVAC systems. In buildings with central HVAC, we continue to use MERV-13 filters circulating fresh air 24 hours a day.

Developing Student Writing Skills in the Disciplines, Dec. 2 at 9 a.m.

Are you interested in helping students to achieve better writing skills in your courses or across your curriculum? Join Jennifer Forsthoefel (English) and Ben Denkinger (Psychology, Assessment) on Thursday, December 2nd at 9am for a live Zoom presentation and discussion on best practices in writing instruction across disciplines. We will present data from a recent survey of over 100 Augsburg faculty on the kinds of writing they assign and how they assess it. We will also discuss best practices for writing instruction based on recommendations by the International Network of Writing Across the Curriculum Programs and the Council of Writing Program Administrators, among others. We will then evaluate new ways of building upon our students’ developing writing skills in our own disciplines and programs.

Facilities Management Snow Policy and Project Updates

Ongoing Projects Are Still on Track

-The Athletic Dome is on track to go up on Monday and Tuesday, November 29 and 30, weather permitting. On November 24, streets adjacent to the athletic field (Butler and 23rd Avenue) will be closed to allow for supply deliveries for the project.

-Campus-wide LED lighting conversion will resume on November 29.

-The railing for Science 123 is on track to be installed in December.

Solar and Carbon Neutrality Resolution

On 11/17/2021, ADSG passed the Solar and Carbon Neutrality Resolution proposed by EAC. The Environmental Action Committee along with the Environmental Stewardship Committee have been advocating for the implementation of solar panels on campus for years now. The goal of this resolution is to pressure administration and our institution to prioritize our carbon neutrality goals (which includes on campus solar installations) in the midst of a climate crisis, and to include student’s voices in sustainability-related initiatives around campus.

Big shout out to previous EAC officers for making such great progress. Thanks to everyone that helped write this resolution and huge thanks to all of you spreading the word about the work we do. Let’s keep demanding and advocating for these (necessary) changes!

Student Stress and Coping Study

Between the COVID-19 pandemic, political turmoil, and growing racial injustice in our country, the past year and a half have been full of unique challenges. We invite you to participate in a study examining student experiences and mental health during the pandemic and following the murder of George Floyd.

To better understand student experiences and mental health during this time, sociology professor James Vela-McConnell is conducting a study of current, degree-seeking undergraduate and graduate students. This study involves a 20-to-30-minute, mostly multiple-choice online questionnaire which can be completed at your convenience. Participation in the questionnaire will be completely confidential, and automatically enter you into a raffle for one of three $100 gift cards, one of six $50 gift cards, or one of eight $25 gift cards from Target. A report based on this study may also be shared with the Center for Wellness and Counseling at Augsburg to allow them to better serve the mental health needs of students.

Please note that the study will close on November 24.

Augsburg isn’t able to host a flu shot event due to staffing shortages this year, but the People’s Center Clinic on the corner of Riverside and 20th avenues is providing flu vaccinations during its open hours and welcomes members of the Augsburg community to make an appointment to get their shot.

Changes to Google Instant Messaging

On Cyber Monday (November 29th), Augsburg will be switching to Google’s newest platform for Instant Messaging – Google Chat. This will keep Augsburg in line with Google’s roadmap and will provide better integration between instant messaging and other Google products. The most noticeable changes will be a slightly different interface on your Google mail screen and the discontinuation of the Google “Hangouts” mobile application. Chapel: Transgender Day of Remembrance

Today, we honor the lives of those who are victims of violence because of their gender identity and gender expression. Students will read the names and light candles to honor the forty-six transgender or gender non-conforming people fatally shot or killed by other violent means in 2021. This event aims to Attendees will be guided through an inspiring and empowering interactive experience. During this two-hour virtual event, take time for self awareness, healing, and mentorship as we engage with one another around the important relationship between mind, body and spirit.

Event is sponsored by The Steve Fund, and led by the amazing Dr. Thema Bryant-Davis, —APA President-Elect, internationally recognized lecturer, performer, and minister. Her expertise includes trauma and holistic healing, with special focus on the intersection of gender and race, and thriving in today’s world.

Students study one of 60+ critical languages, such as Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, or Swahili. Rangel Summer Enrichment Program in D.C. is Live

The Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Summer Enrichment Program is a six-week summer program, held in Washington, DC, designed to provide undergraduate students with a deeper appreciation of current issues and trends in international affairs, a greater understanding of career opportunities in international affairs, and the enhanced knowledge and skills to pursue such careers. This program encourages the application of members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service, women, and those with financial need.

The Program has two major components: First, in order to enhance participants’ academic preparation to work in international affairs, the Program provides two courses and a seminar that focuses on enhancing knowledge and skills related to U.S. foreign policy, economics, and writing. In addition, in order to provide greater insight into the foreign policy-making process and international affairs careers, the Rangel Program introduces the participants to a wide range of government and non-government professionals who work on global issues and also arranges visits to various institutions involved in international affairs. The Program also helps students explore graduate school, scholarship, fellowship, internship, and professional options in international affairs.

Program Benefits:

The Program covers the costs for tuition, travel, housing, and two meals per day.

The Program provides a stipend for $3,300.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must be full-time undergraduate students, with at least sophomore status on the date of the application deadline.

Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale at the time of application.

Applicants must be a U.S. citizen.

Application deadline is February 15th, 2022

Bookstore Accounts are Open for Spring — Here’s What You Need to Know

Bookstore charge accounts will open the day after you’ve registered for spring term. The last day to charge online orders is Sunday, January 16th, 2022. The last day to charge in-store purchases is Wednesday, January 19th, 2022. Due to the financial aid cycle, you can only charge expenses to your bookstore account during this specific period. Be sure to plan ahead!

It’s important to keep up with preventive health care at all times, especially during a pandemic. Augsburg isn’t able to host a flu shot event due to staffing shortages this year, but the People’s Center Clinic on the corner of Riverside and 20th avenues is providing flu vaccinations during its open hours and welcomes members of the Augsburg community to make an appointment to get their shot.

Changes to Google Instant Messaging

On Cyber Monday (November 29th), Augsburg will be switching to Google’s newest platform for Instant Messaging – Google Chat. This will keep Augsburg in line with Google’s roadmap and will provide better integration between instant messaging and other Google products. The most noticeable changes will be a slightly different interface on your Google mail screen and the discontinuation of the Google “Hangouts” mobile application. The Boren Awards fund travel for U.S. students studying abroad in world regions critical to United States interests. Students study one of 60+ critical languages, such as Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, or Swahili. Most programs are a semester or more, but STEM majors can be awarded for an 8 week summer experience.

Attend the Workshop to learn more about the Boren Award, the requirements and qualifications, and the many benefits of being awarded, including career opportunities after graduation.

Come play in the world of Into the Woods! Learn about our approach to the spring musical; have fun with improvisational games and musical rhythms; and get to know others who are interested in the spring musical. As we explore the world of the Woods, we’ll also explore your vision and how it may fit into the approach we are taking to magic and transformation!

The Artistic Staff is excited for this opportunity to get to know students who are interested in auditioning in January and are looking forward to working on and talking more about Into the Woods!

John Rohde Schwehn (he/him) comes to Augsburg after five years of parish ministry with Christ the King Lutheran Church in New Brighton, MN. A graduate of St. Olaf College and Yale Divinity School, he has also served congregations in St. Louis Park and Northfield, MN. He is passionate about forming community through practices of hospitality, worship, and justice. In addition to pastoral ministry, he has also been a contributing author to Augsburg Fortress’s suite of resources on scripture, theology, and Lutheran identity based on the works of Pr. Dan Erlander (Manna and Mercy; Baptized, We Live; A Place for You; Water Washed, Spirit Born). John is incredibly excited to work alongside (and learn from) the Augsburg community, especially its dynamic, curious students. He lives in north Minneapolis with his wife, Anna, and their two daughters, Lydia (5) and Mira (2)

Hi! My name is Bella and I am a second year student here at Augsburg studying graphic design. I am currently trying to find personal care assistants to help me in my day to day life here on campus. This would include getting me ready for the day, helping me get set up for class and assisting me around campus. I am currently looking for people who would want to work some hours during this Fall and Spring semester! If you are a pre-med or nursing student, this is a great opportunity to get experience with patient care. Plus, you get to be paid to have fun!
