Student Campus Box Closure/Survey

submitted by suter@augsburg.edu

As we near the end of another year please don’t forget to take care of your campus mailbox. This includes checking it for any mail, returning your lock and filing out the digital survey for what you would like us to do with your mail after this semester.

Two weeks after the spring semester ends (May 16 2021) we will be closing all student campus boxes unless otherwise notified. Before the fall semester starts we will reassign campus boxes to all residential students. Commuter students can then request to have a campus box if they would like one.

If you would like your mail forwarded or would like to keep your mailbox open for the summer, please either fill out this survey ( https://forms.gle/7VW5CUfDmkzoHVTL6 ) or send us an email (mailship@augsburg.edu) with any relevant information. There is also an option to be keep your current campus box number for the next semester if you will be returning in the fall. If you do not fill out the survey, we will close your campus box and return to sender any mail in the box.

We are only able to forward 1st Class USPS mail and packages. Other packages (UPS, FedEx, Amazon, etc.), magazines, non-profit mail and standard mail will be returned to sender or recycled. We can also only forward to US addresses. The forwarding period for the Augsburg Mailroom is two months from when the request is submitted (July 16 2021). Afterward any additional mail we receive will be returned to sender.

We request that you contact the people/business sending you mail and update your address with them. Enrolling in online/electronic bills or statements can also be a smart option, it is environmentally friendly, secure and will often save you time (and sometimes money). Asking us to forward your mail does not change your mailing address with the USPS or the University, just the Mailroom.

60 Seconds of Your Time Could Help the MN Urban Debate League Get $175K

submitted by froehlic@augsburg.edu

LAST DAY: Please email/call/tweet Rep. Omar to help fund the MNUDL with $175K in Community Program Funding. https://omar.house.gov/contact

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide academic competitive debate programming to Twin Cities middle and high school students. We have an incredible opportunity ahead of us:

The MN 5th Congressional District Office can advance a limited number of projects for the Community Project Funding appropriations bill. We’ve submitted a proposal for $175,000 to bring even more debate programming to Twin Cities students! This could be a game changer- but we can’t do it alone.

How Can You Help?

TODAY: please contact U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar’s office via phone and/or email and share why YOU want to support the MNUDL. The messages can be very short, but each message is like your “vote” of support. Phone calls typically count much more (like 5-7x more) so if you have the time to call- that’s even better!

Two steps:
1 ) Make sure you include “MNUDL” and support for funding our “Community Program Funding Proposal” in any message, so they know what you’re supporting.
2 ) State that you are affiliated with Augsburg University and what connection you have to Urban Debate.

Decisions are happening soon- PLEASE make time to call! Your time and your advocacy could land us our largest single source of funding!

– Call Representative Omar in DC: (202) 225-4755
– Call the Minneapolis Office: (612) 333-1272
– Email Rep. Omar: https://omar.house.gov/contact/
– Tweet/Reply/DM Rep. Omar on Twitter: https://twitter.com/Ilhan

We truly appreciate you taking the time to advocate for our organization!

As we seek to embrace anti-racism in the classroom, it is important to be familiar with past traumas that have been inflicted on people of color by members of the education and helping professions. “A Violent History of Benevolence: Interlocking Oppression in the Moral Economies of Social Working” is a book written by two Canadian scholars that chronicles the systematic racism used in the education and social work professions and the oppression particularly of Indigenous people and African Americans. This is important information not only for social workers but for all of us in higher education.

Chapman, Chris, & Withers, A. J. (2019). A Violent History of Benevolence: Interlocking Oppression in the Moral Economies of Social Working. Toronto: University of Toronto Press.

This is CTL’s final Teaching Tip Tuesday until the Fall. We will be back in September with Teaching Tips on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month. Find more resources at https://inside.augsburg.edu/ctl/.

“Creativity and Agency during COVID: Lessons from the River” Premiering Wednesday, April 28 at 3:10 pm

This EDTalk will feature a discussion of ways to use our time during the pandemic to develop new ways of “teaching by doing and by example.” Joe Underhill will talk about the evolving nature of the River Semester and the plans for new river boats as a way to engage students in a project that can be an example for them of how to get creative and maintain a sense of agency when we face so many daunting challenges.

This year, EDTalks will be pre-recorded and have a community “premiere” on Zoom hosted by CTL at 3:10 pm on days when there is a faculty meeting. These premieres will end no later than 3:30pm to allow plenty of time to log into the Faculty Zoom meeting early. Campus Box Closure/Survey

submitted by suter@augsburg.edu

Graduating? Looking for a Job? Attend the Staffing Agency Job Fair

submitted by tilton@augsburg.edu

Are you graduating this Spring, Summer or in December 2021?

Are you seeking a full-time entry level job and feeling anxious about the job search? You are not alone, it is normal to feel overwhelmed. The Strommen Career & Internship Center invites you to attend a small virtual Staffing Agency Fair powered by Handshake this Friday, April 30th.

Staffing Agencies participating in our fair specialize in working with students who have been out of college for three years or less. They specialize in recruiting and staffing for a single industry or location. These agencies are able to better understand the qualifications that candidates possess to help match them with an organization/position that’s a good fit for them. For new grads working with a staffing agency is a great way to strengthen your resume. In many cases the only way to get hired by larger employers is when you go through a staffing agency.

This fair is an opportunity for you to learn how staffing agencies can help YOU! There is NO fee paid by the candidate, so what do you have to lose?

Register for a group session where you will learn about the company and their process for helping recent grads find work or schedule 1:1 session with a representative to learn more about how they can assist you in your entry-level job search!

If you have questions, please email careers@augsburg.edu

Forum Event – Religion in the Workplace: Interfaith Skills to Engage Difference

submitted by gocmen@augsburg.edu

When: May 6, 2021 11:00 am – 12:30 pm CST
Where: Online/Video Conference
Cost: $30 Suggested Donation
Level: Intermediate
Track: Critical Employment Practices
Presenters: Megan Hughes Johnson, Interfaith Youth Core  |  Jenan Mohajir, Interfaith Youth Core

Religious diversity is an incredibly important part of American public life. Controversies regarding religion and business are regularly in both the press and the courts and more Americans say that they encounter religious diversity at work than in any other sphere of their life (PRRI, 2019). However, religion is often left out of the corporate diversity conversation. Diverse identities and perspectives on a team can lead to greater outcomes or can lead to misunderstanding and conflict. It is only when diverse identities are engaged, and team members have opportunities to intentionally learn about one another, that the potential strength of workplace diversity is unlocked. Developing a company culture that proactively engages religious diversity can open doors to greater employee productivity, enhanced client satisfaction, and even new business prospects. Join IFYC to explore why engaging religion matters in the workplace, workshop challenging scenarios, and identify your interfaith skillset.

Learning Outcomes
Learn why engaging religious diversity matters in the workplace
Understand and apply interfaith frameworks to common tensions in the workplace related to religious identity and diversity

Hybrid All Hands Meeting on May 6

submitted by wegenke@augsburg.edu

The final All Hands Meeting of the 2020-21 year will be Thursday, May 6 at 9 a.m. The meeting will be held as a hybrid event, both in Hoversten Chapel and via Zoom. While we normally hold a longer, strategy-focused All-Hands Planning Summit at the end of the year, we have decided to move our summit conversation to the fall and use this opportunity to report on the significant accomplishments of the 2020-21 academic year.

Faculty and staff can email events@augsburg.edu to reserve an in-person spot. Space will be limited; the maximum capacity of the chapel under current structured event guidelines is 58. Faculty and staff can also register to join the webinar on the All Hands page on Inside Augsburg (log in required).

Campus Boxes Closing/Survey

submitted by suter@augsburg.edu

In-Person Commencement Ceremonies

submitted by cashdar@augsburg.edu

Like the Class of 2020, the Class of 2021 will have a virtual commencement ceremony open to all, scheduled for the evening of May 3, 2021. However, with the increasing pace of vaccinations and the relaxing of public health limitations on events, we are now able to contemplate the best way to celebrate graduations face-to-face as well.

Based on survey results from our graduates, the majority of the Class of 2021 prefers to have an in-person ceremony soon, with limited guests, masking, and mandatory physical distancing. The majority of the Class of 2020 prefers waiting until spring of 2022 in hopes that fewer restrictions will be in place by that time.

For the Class of 2020, we will share more as plans come together and dates are confirmed to ensure you and your guests have time to plan for next year’s celebration.

The Class of 2021 ceremony has been scheduled for June 8, 2021, at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. Updates will be shared with graduates and added to the Augsburg commencement webpage when details become available.

Augsburg Faculty Recognized for their Distinguished Contributions in Service

submitted by maherk@augsburg.edu

Augsburg annually recognizes teaching faculty that have made exemplary contributions to creating an engaging academic learning environment through awards for teaching, scholarship, and service. Congratulations to the 2021 Awardees!

Here are the Service Awardees:

Distinguished Contribution in Service (Community-Focused)
Kathleen (Katie) Clark, Nursing and Executive Director of the Health Commons
“Many of those served by the Health Commons are living on the streets of Minneapolis or are marginally housed. Katie figured out a way to continue to serve the community during the COVID-19 pandemic — she started seeing visitors outside, continuing to distribute hygiene kits and delivering food to encampments and to those who tested positive for COVID and were not allowed into the shelters. George Floyd used to visit the Augsburg Central Health Commons. Although Katie didn’t know him well, the continuing efforts of the Health Commons in the community are dedicated to the memory of George. The fight for justice will not end.”

Distinguished Contribution in Service (University-Focused)
Jenny Hanson, Communication Studies
“During these extraordinary times, Jenny has gone to extraordinary lengths to serve our students, faculty, and staff. Jenny has worked tirelessly over the past year, as the university pivoted and faculty and staff needed resources to provide high-quality remote learning and services. She provided exemplary service to the Augsburg community through her work on policy development and best emerging practices for remote teaching and learning, all in the midst of a global pandemic. The positive impact of Jenny’s service will be experienced by our students, faculty, and staff well into the future.”
