James Curry has been selected as a finalist for the 2021 Film/Video & New Media Minnesota Jerome Hill Artist Fellowship. Curry was awarded a one time grant of $5000 by the Jerome Foundation and named an alternate. The Jerome Foundation awarded 60 Fellowships (10 in film/new media) to artists in Minnesota and New York City. The Foundation also granted 84 additional awards to finalists and alternates.

The CGEE Mexico Site wants to thank all of you who gave generous contributions to support the 5 Rios-Sanchez children after the COVID deaths of Isabel Sanchez & Moises Rios, who were an important part of the Augsburg Mexico staff for many years. We are happy to report that the youngest (11-year-old Sliri) now has a refurbished computer in order to complete her online coursework. She is very excited about having her first computer, and we are hopeful that it will help her tremendously as she does her best to keep up her straight-A average in school and someday attend university, perhaps here at Augsburg.

#StopAsianHate: APAHE National Summit

Augsburg Asian Student Association (AASA), Hmong Women Together (HWT), and Pan Asian Student Services(PASS) recognizes that anti-AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islanders) prejudice is only one form of systematic racism that continues to spread in our nation. Together, we appreciate the outpour of outreach and attention from Administration, peers and allies in support of the recent events in Georgia and our daily lived experiences.

We hope that there will be work in solidarity from Augsburg to take a stand against the structures that perpetuate and fuel discrimination for all BIPOC and specifically recently more heightened assaults on Pan-Asians in our communities, and to identify actionable ways to address this and all forms of prejudice, stigmatization, and racism.

3 Days in May: Request for Proposals (Due April 16)

CTL’s annual “Three Days in May” professional development event will take place over Zoom Tuesday, May 11 through Thursday, May 13, 2021, and we are officially accepting proposals for seminars, workshops, panels, etc. You do not need to present a topic in order to propose it, but it is much more likely to get scheduled if you provide a coordinator for the session.

Sessions may be 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes long and should somehow address one of the categories listed below OR provide other essential information for teaching faculty and staff (e.g. tenure portfolio workshops). To submit a proposal, click on the short Google form here which will ask for a temporary title, topic category(ies), coordinator name (if any), and length of session.

The theme for “3 Days” this year is “Closing the Loop on the Augsburg Student Survey”, and all sessions will be listed under at least one of six categories: (1) Student Mental and Physical Health, (2) Planning and Study Skills, (3) Peer Support and Connection, (4) Student Interaction with Faculty, (5) Clear and Flexible Teaching Practices, and (5) Student Professional and Career Development.

The LEAD (Leaders for Equity, Action & Democracy) Fellows Program focuses on student leadership development through off-campus, community-strengthening work in which they are working to address social issues such as education inequity, food insecurity, housing instability, etc. Students attend regular cohort meetings to reflect together on their work, cultivate critical analysis of the issues they’re working to address, and develop leadership skills.

In addition to being an active member of the leadership cohort, students will have access to paid internships both on and off campus in position that focus on social change work.

Applications are Now Open for the 2021-22 AugSTEM Scholars Program

The AugSTEM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Funded by the National Science Foundation, AugSTEM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $10,000 per student per year. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Fall 2021 (graduating by December ‘23)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher (scholars will be expected to raise their GPA to 3.0 during program participation)
– U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)

Application deadline: Thursday, May 13 at 11:59pm
Faculty reference deadline: Tuesday, May 25 (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application)

Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.

Controversies regarding religion and business are regularly in both the press and the courts and more Americans say that they encounter religious diversity at work than in any other sphere of their life (PRRI, 2019). However, religion is often left out of the corporate diversity conversation. Diverse identities and perspectives on a team can lead to greater outcomes or can lead to misunderstanding and conflict. It is only when diverse identities are engaged, and team members have opportunities to intentionally learn about one another, that the potential strength of workplace diversity is unlocked. Developing a company culture that proactively engages religious diversity can open doors to greater employee productivity, enhanced client satisfaction, and even new business prospects. Join this virtual event where graduate students from Augsburg’s Clinical Psychology PsyD program will review existing research on cultural applications and adaptations to cognitive behavioral therapy.

Graduate students will present virtual posters of their work and respond to questions on the following specific topics: CBT for American Indians with Substance Use Disorders, CBT with Arab individuals presenting with symptoms of trauma, addressing therapist microaggressions when working with transgender individuals in a CBT framework, and cultural considerations when using CBT with individuals who identify as transgender and BIPOC.

CTL’s annual “Three Days in May” professional development event will take place over Zoom Tuesday, May 11 through Thursday, May 13, 2021, and we are officially accepting proposals for seminars, workshops, panels, etc. You do not need to present a topic in order to propose it, but it is much more likely to get scheduled if you provide a coordinator for the session.

Sessions may be 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes long and should somehow address one of the categories listed below OR provide other essential information for teaching faculty and staff (e.g. tenure portfolio workshops). To submit a proposal, click on the short Google form here which will ask for a temporary title, topic category(ies), coordinator name (if any), and length of session.

The theme for “3 Days” this year is “Closing the Loop on the Augsburg Student Survey”, and all sessions will be listed under at least one of six categories: (1) Student Mental and Physical Health, (2) Planning and Study Skills, (3) Peer Support and Connection, (4) Student Interaction with Faculty, (5) Clear and Flexible Teaching Practices, and (5) Student Professional and Career Development.

When anyone is confronted by any form of aggression, whether verbal, physical, social, or economic, it is natural to feel fear, doubt, and paralysis. This is important in assessing critical next steps if we happen to be a bystander. We must also look at our own fears and triggers as they, too, play a role in how we may react or respond to any potential conflict or confrontation.

During this webinar participants will consider some very important questions as they devise their own ways of responding to triggering situations. How does privilege impact decisions to engage in conflict and whether/how to respond? When is allyship an act of support, and when is it not? Who gets to decide? Controversies regarding religion and business are regularly in both the press and the courts and more Americans say that they encounter religious diversity at work than in any other sphere of their life (PRRI, 2019). However, religion is often left out of the corporate diversity conversation. Diverse identities and perspectives on a team can lead to greater outcomes or can lead to misunderstanding and conflict. It is only when diverse identities are engaged, and team members have opportunities to intentionally learn about one another, that the potential strength of workplace diversity is unlocked. Developing a company culture that proactively engages religious diversity can open doors to greater employee productivity, enhanced client satisfaction, and even new business prospects. Professors Degner Riveros and Rodriguez Receive Provost’s Internationalization Grants

Sarah Degner Riveros and Rafael Antonio Rodriguez have both been awarded 2021-2022 Provost’s Internationalization Grants by the Faculty Development Committee in association with the Center for Global Education and Experience. Two grants are offered each year to provide support for faculty to pursue international teaching, research, or other scholarly collaboration with Augsburg University international programs or partner institutions.

Sarah Degner Riveros (Languages and Cross-Cultural Studies) will receive a $3,500 grant to support her work this summer with Augsburg’s Cuernavaca, Mexico CGEE Global Site.

Rafael Antonio Rodriguez (Music) will receive a $2,000 grant to support his work this summer with the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, an Augsburg partner institution.

Help Distribute Vaccines and Get One Too

The Augsburg Central Health Commons will be a hosting a vaccine event in downtown Minneapolis at Central Lutheran Church on Monday, April 19th and Monday, May 17th 9a-3pm. We are distributing the vaccines to marginalized communities in the area. We are looking for volunteers (both nurses and non-nurses) to help with the events of the day. Anyone who volunteers is eligible for a Pfizer vaccine. In order to receive the vaccine, you would need to be able to go to Central Lutheran Church on both dates to get both doses of the vaccine, but would only need to volunteer on one of the dates – not both. Zyzzogeton Virtual Student Research Symposium is April 13

Augsburg celebrates the creativity and scholarship of undergraduate students with its annual Zyzzogeton festival. The festival falls at the end of each academic year and is a culmination of achievement featuring work across departments.

Augsburg Asian Student Association (AASA), Hmong Women Together (HWT), and Pan Asian Student Services(PASS) recognizes that anti-AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islanders) prejudice is only one form of systematic racism that continues to spread in our nation. Together, we appreciate the outpour of outreach and attention from Administration, peers and allies in support of the recent events in Georgia last week and our daily lived experiences.

We hope that there will be work in solidarity from Augsburg to take a stand against the structures that perpetuate and fuel discrimination for all BIPOC and specifically recently more heightened assaults on Pan-Asians in our communities, and to identify actionable ways to address this and all forms of prejudice, stigmatization, and racism.

Profs Degner Riveros and Rodriguez Receive Provost’s Internationalization Grants

Sarah Degner Riveros and Rafael Antonio Rodriguez have both been awarded 2021-2022 Provost’s Internationalization Grants by the Faculty Development Committee in association with the Center for Global Education and Experience. Two grants are offered each year to provide support for faculty to pursue international teaching, research, or other scholarly collaboration with Augsburg University international programs or partner institutions.

Sarah Degner Riveros (Languages and Cross-Cultural Studies) will receive a $3,500 grant to support her work this summer with Augsburg’s Cuernavaca, Mexico CGEE Global Site.

Rafael Antonio Rodriguez (Music) will receive a $2,000 grant to support his work this summer with the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, an Augsburg partner institution.

3 Days in May: Request for Proposals (Due April 16)

CTL’s annual “Three Days in May” professional development event will take place over Zoom Tuesday, May 11 through Thursday, May 13, 2021, and we are officially accepting proposals for seminars, workshops, panels, etc. You do not need to present a topic in order to propose it, but it is much more likely to get scheduled if you provide a coordinator for the session.

Sessions may be 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes long and should somehow address one of the categories listed below OR provide other essential information for teaching faculty and staff (e.g. tenure portfolio workshops). To submit a proposal, click on the short Google form here which will ask for a temporary title, topic category(ies), coordinator name (if any), and length of session.

The theme for “3 Days” this year is “Closing the Loop on the Augsburg Student Survey”, and all sessions will be listed under at least one of six categories: (1) Student Mental and Physical Health, (2) Planning and Study Skills, (3) Peer Support and Connection, (4) Student Interaction with Faculty, (5) Clear and Flexible Teaching Practices, and (5) Student Professional and Career Development.

Join this virtual event where graduate students from Augsburg’s Clinical Psychology PsyD program will review existing research on cultural applications and adaptations to cognitive behavioral therapy.

Graduate students will present virtual posters of their work and respond to questions on the following specific topics: CBT for American Indians with Substance Use Disorders, CBT with Arab individuals presenting with symptoms of trauma, addressing therapist microaggressions when working with transgender individuals in a CBT framework, and cultural considerations when using CBT with transgender BIPOC individuals.

Office Hours TODAY and TOMORROW: Degree Audit System

All faculty are invited to join the upcoming deans’ office hours (Tuesday, April 6 from 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm and Wednesday, April 7 from 10 am – 11 am). These two sessions will include a very brief demonstration of the new degree audit tool, followed by an opportunity for Q&A.

The encoders have developed a series of short training videos and posted them on Augsburg’s Community Moodle site. There are 15 videos with a total viewing time of about 2.5 hours. If possible, we encourage you to review these videos before the office hours next week.

We will also be conducting one Q & A session during 3 Days in May to answer any further questions.

For Students Observing Ramadan

Dining services will be offering meals after sundown for students observing Ramadan. Ramadan should begin on April 12 at sundown. From April 12 through April 29 (the last meal plan dinner for the semester), dining services will offer a meal for students observing Ramadan from 8:45-10pm each night. At these meal times, students may take with them the food needed for breakfast prior to sunrise. Please share this information with others.

MFA George Floyd Memorial Award

The Augsburg University MFA Program in Creative Writing is pleased to announce the winner of our George Floyd Memorial Award — the poet Valérie Déus.

Valérie Déus is a poet, film programmer, and radio show host. Her work has been featured in Minnesota Women’s Press, The Brooklyn Rail, Midway, Saint Paul Almanac, The BeZine and, most recently, A Garden of Black Joy anthology and Under Purple Skies: A Minneapolis Anthology. When she’s not writing, she is the host of Project 35, a local low-fi radio show featuring music from all over the diaspora and poetry on KRSM – 98.9 FM. She curates FilmNorth’s Cinema Lounge and is the Shorts Programmer for the Provincetown Film Society & Festival.

Augsburg University created this award to support and celebrate writers that show great promise in their ability to further dismantle anti-Black racism, racism, white supremacy, and other forms of oppression. The award covers the cost of tuition for the MFA program’s three required summer residency sessions and provides a reduced rate for the remaining credit hours needed for the degree.

Owing to the strength of the candidates for this award, Augsburg University was able to provide a second scholarship to Minnesota-based fiction writer Hawo Jama.

A Few Spots Available for Fall Mississippi River Adventure

There is a great group of students signed up to embark from Lake Itasca to begin their hundred-day canoe expedition down the length of the Mississippi River. Students take courses in environmental justice, climate change, politics in the American heartland, outdoor leadership, and undertake individual research projects. In addition to spending time in St. Louis, Memphis, and New Orleans, the group paddles and camps portions of the “Wild Miles” on the Lower Mississippi, the heavily industrialized “Chemical Corridor,” and finishes by paddling to the Gulf of Mexico, site of some of powerful resistance from local Indigenous communities. Students interested in joining the program are invited to apply through the Augsburg Study Away web portal. Deadline extended to May 31, with a few spots still available!

Auggie Wins a Goldwater Scholarship

Maxwell Bannister, who will graduate spring 2022 with degrees in biology and chemistry, won the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship award. Out of 1256 nominees, 410 Goldwater Scholars were selected. Each school can only recommend 4 nominations, making the pool of candidates formidable.

After his first year at Augsburg Maxwell did summer research with Augsburg’s plant biologist, Dr. Leon van Eck. This past summer and currently Maxwell is doing research in the Department of Pharmacology at the U of M’s Medical School and will return to the same lab this upcoming summer.

In addition to being involved with research, Maxwell was an AugSEM leader and an Orientation leader. Post-Augsburg Maxwell will be attending a MD/PhD program.

Congratulations, Maxwell, on such an impressive accomplishment!

Zyzzogeton Virtual Student Research Symposium

Augsburg celebrates the creativity and scholarship of undergraduate students with its annual Zyzzogeton festival. The festival falls at the end of each academic year and is a culmination of achievement featuring work across departments.

This year Zyzzogeton will be held virtually, with student posters available for viewing online and live Q & A sessions.

Students – don’t forget about TutorMe! It is available to Augsburg students 24/7 and offers tutoring in over 300 subjects from qualified tutors. Students are able to use 3 hours a week; 3 one hour sessions or 6 thirty-minute sessions. You can access TutorMe through any of your Moodle classes. At the top left of your screen there is an orange tab to see the side panel of resources. As you scroll down, you will see the “Augsburg Tools” section and underneath is the link to TutorMe. #StopAsianHate Virtual Candlelight Vigil

Augsburg Asian Student Association (AASA), Hmong Women Together (HWT), and Pan Asian Student Services(PASS) recognizes that anti-AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islanders) prejudice is only one form of systematic racism that continues to spread in our nation. Together, we appreciate the outpour of outreach and attention from Administration, peers and allies in support of the recent events in Georgia last week and our daily lived experiences.

We hope that there will be work in solidarity from Augsburg to take a stand against the structures that perpetuate and fuel discrimination for all BIPOC and specifically recently more heightened assaults on Pan-Asians in our communities, and to identify actionable ways to address this and all forms of prejudice, stigmatization, and racism.
