Campus Life is currently accepting applications for the Augsburg Senior Leadership Society, which recognizes graduating seniors (i.e., those graduating in Spring, Summer, or Fall 2020) for their leadership contributions during their tenure at Augsburg University.

Free Trip to Holocaust Museum Through the MINNE Fellowship

The MINNE Holocaust Fellows program selects college students to participate in a fully-paid, one-day trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. to acquire a more in-depth knowledge of the Holocaust. Fellows tour the permanent exhibits and featured exhibits, as well as meet with a museum representative. Awards come through the MINNE Fund of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, who has chosen Augsburg to be one of the select universities to participate in the program. Five Augsburg students were selected last year for the trip.
The 2020 trip will take place on April 23rd. Applications are due on February 28th and can be found at http://jewishminneapolis.org/minne/. Join LGBTQIA+ Student Services, Monday, March 9th, 10 am to 2 pm in the East Commons for their upcoming scholarship fundraiser, Cutz 4 Queerz.

We will be hosting barbers & stylists from Fox Den Salon; this is an open, walk-in style event. All haircuts will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis. All haircuts are free-will donation, with a suggested donation of $20. All barbers and stylists are donating their time and energy – as all proceeds made will go towards the LGBTQIA+ Student Services Scholarship, which will be awarded at Lavender Celebration, April 16th.

This event is open to all faculty, staff, students, and the community.
Cuts are available for people of all genders and hair types.

Big Gay Snow Day

In collaboration with QPA, LGBTQIA+ Student Services will be hosting a Big Gay Snow Day Friday, March 13th. It’s a day filled with snow tubing, hot cocoa, friends, and fun.
This event is taking the place of MBLGTACC – as we were not able to attend this year. So instead, this will be our Minnesota way of enjoying the outdoors, in the gayest way possible.
Post-snow-tubing, we will be coming back to watch a film and enjoy pizza.

We will meet in the Auggies Nest at 3:30 pm and leave no later than 4 pm.

Queering Career: Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office Forensic Science Laboratory

As a continuation of or Queering Career series, LGBTQIA+ Student Services is sponsoring visits to local businesses.

Saturday, March 28th, join LGBTQIA+ Student Services, TriBeta, & Strommen Center for Queering Career. This site visit, we will be traveling to the Hennepin County Crime Lab.

Within Hennepin County, the laboratory provides forensic services to over 35 local law enforcement agencies, the Minnesota State Patrol, and several federal law enforcement agencies. The laboratory is staffed by licensed peace officers and civilians serving in the following specialized areas:
DNA
Crime Scene Investigation
Evidence
Latent Print (Fingerprints)
Firearm Examination

We will be touring the lab spaces and learning about each specialized area above.

Queering Career Series works to promote the visibility of local, queer-owned businesses and employees.

This event is open to all LGBTQIA+ and ally identified day students at Augsburg.

We will meet in the Auggies Nest at 10 am, leave no later than 10:30 am, and will be back on campus by 12:30 pm. We will travel as a group on the light rail; day students who want to attend and do not have their Auggie Passes should go to the circulation desk on the first floor of Lindell Library or contact Brittany Stokes at stokesb@augsburg.edu.

Staff Senate is now accepting nominations to honor outstanding staff and outstanding newcomers at Augsburg University! Nominations for the Outstanding Staff and Newcomer Awards will be accepted from February 3rd through February 21st. Nominations are welcomed from any current member of the campus community – staff, faculty, or student.

The Staff Appreciation Program is intended to recognize staff members who have made an important contribution to the campus community over the past year. Recipients of the Outstanding Staff Award provide exceptional service to others, work collaboratively across divisions or departments, demonstrate a clear commitment to equity and inclusion, and enhance the objectives of their department and the mission of Augsburg University through creativity, innovation, and hard work.

The Newcomer Award recognizes a staff person who has made a significant impact on campus life in a short amount time. Staff who have been at Augsburg for two years or less (as of February 1, 2020) are eligible to receive this award.

Staff Senate will award five Outstanding Staff awards and one Newcomer award in a presentation on the afternoon of March 26th.

Important Information Regarding CTL Travel Grants

Because of a budget shortfall, CTL is not accepting/approving any new applications for travel within the current fiscal year.

-If your travel is near the end of this fiscal year, and you are willing to use personal funds and wait until after June 1 for reimbursement to be processed, you can submit an application. However, this will be coming from your 2020-2021 funds.

-This does not affect travel applications already submitted and approved. If you already received an approval for travel this fiscal year (travel taking place before the end of May), then follow instructions as outlined in your travel grant approval.

-This does not affect any adjunct travel grants/professional development funding.

-We are accepting applications for travel between June and December starting March 1.

“Wellness in Color” is a podcast series of the National Alliance of Mental Illness that explores perspectives on mental health to reshape the cultural language of mental illness. In the podcast young adults of color share their challenges and successes in mental health recovery and wellness. NAMI’s goal is “to reach collective cultural communities through positive reflections on wellness through discussions on why community members do not seek help for themselves or their loved one living with a mental illness.”

There will be a two part discussion. You can attend either of the two sessions for each part, but should attend both parts.

In the first part we will discuss three podcast episodes:

-The Pressures of Perfection by Aneela Kumar (44min)

Faculty, do you wish you had uninterrupted time to write/work on scholarship? If so, you will want to take advantage of the annual Jessica Nathanson Scholarly Writing Retreat. Jess established a tradition of allowing faculty and academic staff time away from campus to focus entirely on scholarship. There is no schedule for this retreat – it is simply time and space to work on scholarship. The Provost and the Center for Teaching and Learning will cover the cost of the retreat. We ask that you commit to being present on all three days of the event. Our time begins at 1 p.m. on Sunday and ends at 1 p.m. on Tuesday. Space is limited to full-time faculty members.

The Environmental Action Committee has approved funding for certified 100% post- consumer Recycled Paper for 3 years! This development contributes to the commitment to sustainability at Augsburg University, and furthers us towards our goal of Carbon Neutrality by 2030. Even more sustainable, however, is reducing paper use. Be sure to print double sided when possible, and always think before printing more than one copy. Consider whether or not there is an electronic alternative.

Included in this resolution are commitments to having 50% of our energy coming from on-campus solar by 2025, Electric Vehicle Charging Stations by 2023, LEED certifications for all new buildings and renovations, 50% reduction in transportation emissions, the creation of a comprehensive climate action plan that holds students, staff, faculty, and administration accountable for fulfilling this commitment, and more. Interfaith Ally Training Opportunities

Participants will hear the stories of community members from a variety of traditions and have the opportunity to learn through case studies.

Brownbag discussion of The Anthropocene River Journey

The 2019 River Journey took over 50 people on the Mississippi last fall, and connected to around 500 scholars, artists, and local practitioners involved with the elaborate Mississippi. An Anthropocene River Project orchestrated by the Haus der Kulturen der Welt and Max Planck Institute for the History of Science.  It was a rich, multifaceted experience, with multiple field-based research and arts projects, and provided us with some interesting stories (e.g. getting sprayed by a crop duster, witnessing a slave rebellion re-enactment, and spending a little time in the back of a police car).  It also provided insights into new possibilities for higher education in the 21st century and suggested ways to develop what might be called an “Anthropocene Curriculum.”  Feel free to bring your lunch and stop by OGC 100 at noon on Wed., Mar. 4th to hear more about the Anthropocene River Journey and join in discussion of new curricular possibilities for the times we’re living through and what kinds of local and on-campus programs can provide similarly engaging, healing, and high-impact learning opportunities for our students.

We have two goals for our session on February 25th:
1. We will review the current set of graduate program learning outcomes for each program and discuss:
a. the ways in which graduate level learning outcomes map to the mission
b. the ways in which they are scaffolded at a higher level than our undergraduate learning outcomes.
2. We will identify if there are graduate level learning outcomes that are ‘shared’ by all graduate programs. Can we call them out explicitly as part of our commitment to graduate students at Augsburg?

Undergraduate General Education Learning Outcomes

A new, streamlined set of General Education Learning Outcomes (GELOs) is needed to better understand students’ learning experience in courses in the General Education curriculum. During this session we will review the proposed learning outcomes and examine how they relate to institutional outcomes. We will discuss how the proposed GELOs can accommodate the current curriculum, and yet be flexible to proposed curricular changes. This workshop will offer faculty and staff an opportunity to comment on the proposed outcomes, and help develop preliminary plans for how and where these outcomes can be assessed.

These awards recognize student leaders and student organizations for their innovation and outstanding leadership during this academic year. Recipients will be honored at the 21st Annual Augsburg Leadership Awards on Sunday, April 5 from 6:00 – 8:30 p.m. in Hoversten Chapel.

Important Information Regarding CTL Travel Grants

Because of a budget shortfall, CTL is not accepting/approving any new applications for travel within the current fiscal year.

-If your travel is near the end of this fiscal year, and you are willing to use personal funds and wait until after June 1 for reimbursement to be processed, you can submit an application. However, this will be coming from your 2020-2021 funds.

-This does not affect travel applications already submitted and approved. If you already received an approval for travel this fiscal year (travel taking place before the end of May), then follow instructions as outlined in your travel grant approval.

-This does not affect any adjunct travel grants/professional development funding.

-We are accepting applications for travel between June and December starting March 1.

Apply to be in one of Augsburg’s three Public Leadership Scholar Programs: Christensen Scholars, Interfaith Scholars, or Sabo Scholars.

In these programs, you will have the opportunity to participate in a yearlong academic seminar with a cohort of your peers. You will contribute to public leadership on campus and in the wider community in the Christian tradition, through interfaith engagement, or civic life. You will also be able to earn 4 upper division semester credits in the Religion or Political Science and receive a $2,000 scholarship.

Who is Eligible?
Christensen and Interfaith Scholars – Current sophomores and juniors who plan to study on campus all of the 2020-21 academic year.

Sabo Scholars – Current students (any level) who plan to study on campus all of the 2020-21 academic year.

Free Trip to Holocaust Museum Through the MINNE Fellowship

The MINNE Holocaust Fellows program selects college students to participate in a fully-paid, one-day trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. to acquire a more in-depth knowledge of the Holocaust. Fellows tour the permanent exhibits and featured exhibits, as well as meet with a museum representative. Awards come through the MINNE Fund of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, who has chosen Augsburg to be one of the select universities to participate in the program. Five Augsburg students were selected last year for the trip.
The 2020 trip will take place on April 23rd. Applications are due on February 28th and can be found at http://jewishminneapolis.org/minne/. Sustainability-related grant available – Deadline TOMORROW

Looking for funding for sustainability-related course development, conference travel, research, internships, or other ideas? The College Sustainability grant we received is in its last year of funding, and the grant team is requesting all proposals for funding be made by February 26 in order to prioritize spending for the spring and summer. Remember that we think about sustainability broadly – environmental, economic, social, and personal wellness – on our campus, in our neighboring community, and among our institutional partners. It includes stewarding a culture of sustainability alongside of our most precious resources – Air, Land, Water, Built Environment, People, Food, and Energy.

Funding is available for:
Conference Travel: up to $750 faculty/$600 students
Course Development: $1,500
Faculty Research: $4,000
Student Research with Faculty Mentor: student stipend – $4,000; faculty stipend – $1,000
Off-Campus Internship with Community Partner – up to $4,200
Other: Flexible – depends on project needs and available funding

The proposals are selected for funding based on the following criteria:
-Relevance to the grant objectives
-Significance and potential for long-term impact on campus sustainability culture
-Interdisciplinarity, multifunctionality

Congratulations to Professor Beliza Torres Narvaez on her brilliant show, “Resabios de Amargura or That Bitter Caberet” as part of Teatro del Pueblo’s “From Puerto Rico …with Love?”
Professor Torres Narvaez directed and performed in the show at the Avalon Theatre this past weekend. The show received rave reviews from all those who saw it!

Augsburg University Student Ministries (AUSM) had a miscommunication with the commissioning board and were barred from presenting so have been disqualified from the commissioning process. We are petitioning for a referendum. We are asking for student signatures so we can apply for commissioning. Some of the events that we’ve organized that support Augsburg students include weekly Wednesday night worships, once a month multicultural worship, campus cleanup in the fall, contributing to the march on the capitol for action on climate change, Interfaith Friendsgiving, Fall Spiritual Retreat, Alternative Spring Break, and the beginning of the school year block party. If you are willing to help us out, please come by the Campus Ministry office by Hoversten Chapel and sign your name on our petition. Thank you for your support.

Subscriptions range from $3 to $20. Your subscription will help bring fresh produce to corner stores in the Cedar Riverside area. We will be continuing our partnership with BrightSide Produce this semester.

If you are interested in being a part of Augsburg’s Buyer Club please follow the step by step instructions below.

Free Produce Distribution Spring 2020

Campus Kitchen will and has continued to table with free produce in Christensen Center Lobby in efforts to increase free, healthy and accessible food options. Similar to last semester this will be held weekly on Mondays 2pm-4pm. All we need from you (before you take your items) is your Augsburg ID and the total weight of the items you’re taking.

We also know that there might be confusion on when Augsburg Staff/Faculty are allowed to grab produce. Just for clarification, we welcome and encourage any Augsburg Staff/Faculty to come grab free produce after 3pm.

The Office of Grants & Sponsored Programs is hosting an event series to support ongoing grant proposal development among faculty and staff. The next session is Wednesday, February 26 (3:30 – 5pm) in Lindell 301.

The topic is Funding Searches & Small Grants. Mary Hollerich of Lindell Library will discuss how to conduct funding searches for grants, and how the Library can help during the lifecycle of your grant. OGSP will give numerous examples of small grants across the disciplines. Twenty minutes will be reserved at the end for writing, consultations, and planning.

“Wellness in Color” Podcast Discussion Group

“Wellness in Color” (https://namimn.org/category/podcast-episodes/wellness-in-color/) is a podcast series of the National Alliance of Mental Illness that explores perspectives on mental health to reshape the cultural language of mental illness. In the podcast young adults of color share their challenges and successes in mental health recovery and wellness. NAMI’s goal is “to reach collective cultural communities through positive reflections on wellness through discussions on why community members do not seek help for themselves or their loved one living with a mental illness.”

There will be a two part discussion. You can attend either of the two sessions for each part, but should attend both parts.

In the first part we will discuss three podcast episodes:

Faculty, do you wish you had uninterrupted time to write/work on scholarship? If so, you will want to take advantage of the annual Jessica Nathanson Scholarly Writing Retreat. Jess established a tradition of allowing faculty and academic staff time away from campus to focus entirely on scholarship. There is no schedule for this retreat – it is simply time and space to work on scholarship. The Provost and the Center for Teaching and Learning will cover the cost of the retreat. We ask that you commit to being present on all three days of the event. Our time begins at 1 p.m. on Sunday and ends at 1 p.m. on Tuesday. Space is limited to full-time faculty members.

We will welcome a MN State Trooper who will walk through a DUI stop as well as two current Augsburg students sharing their stories and experiences with driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Free Trip to Holocaust Museum Through the MINNE Fellowship

The MINNE Holocaust Fellows program selects college students to participate in a fully-paid, one-day trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. to acquire a more in-depth knowledge of the Holocaust. Fellows tour the permanent exhibits and featured exhibits, as well as meet with a museum representative. Awards come through the MINNE Fund of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, who has chosen Augsburg to be one of the select universities to participate in the program. Five Augsburg students were selected last year for the trip.
The 2020 trip will take place on April 23rd. Applications are due on February 28th and can be found at http://jewishminneapolis.org/minne/. Apply to be in one of Augsburg’s three Public Leadership Scholar Programs: Christensen Scholars, Interfaith Scholars, or Sabo Scholars.

In these programs, you will have the opportunity to participate in a yearlong academic seminar with a cohort of your peers. You will contribute to public leadership on campus and in the wider community in the Christian tradition, through interfaith engagement, or civic life. You will also be able to earn 4 upper division semester credits in the Religion or Political Science and receive a $2,000 scholarship.

Who is Eligible?
Christensen and Interfaith Scholars – Current sophomores and juniors who plan to study on campus all of the 2020-21 academic year.

Yes, there’s still snow covering the farm fields, but that doesn’t mean we can’t eat good Minnesota grown produce in February! Beginning this week, The Commons will feature local produce (as available) from The Good Acre, a Falcon Heights based organization that “connects and strengthens farmers, food makers, and communities through good food.” The Good Acre has worked since 2013 to build infrastructure and support for local farmers to access challenging high-volume food markets like hospitals and universities. Augsburg has supported their work as part of the Central Corridor Anchor Partnership, and we are excited to deepen our relationship through purchasing power. As we live into our anchor institution and sustainability commitments that center the long-term well-being of our campus and surrounding communities, we will continue to seek opportunities to support healthy local economies, social systems, and ecosystems that we all depend on. – let students know ahead of time so they can bring their mobile devices
– leave the room during the time
– affirm that the surveys are voluntary and anonymous
– affirm that the surveys provide valuable information to you and your department chair

Augsburg’s CGEE study center in Southern Africa offers an experiential, community-based, social-justice focused semester program in fall or spring:

Nation Building and Decolonizing the Mind in Southern Africa

Stay on-track to graduate by taking 16+ credits. Courses are available in History, Political Science, Religion, wellness, or even choose an internship as part of your semester. All courses are in English. Your semester starts in South Africa and then continues on to Namibia. Study in TWO countries in one semester!

For fall 2020 only: CGEE is providing **FREE AIRFARE** for all Fall 2020 semester students in Southern Africa!

You can use your full semester financial-aid package to help pay for the program, and additionally you will receive an automatic CGEE Travel Grant scholarship of $1,500, and free airfare for fall 2020, making a semester at CGEE Southern Africa one of the most affordable study abroad semester programs!

Theater Department Professor Beliza Torres Narváez will perform her solo show
“Resabios de Amargura or that bitter cabaret” in double feature with storyteller Javier Morillo’s “Broken English Mother Tongue.”

When: Thu Feb 20- Sat 22 @ 7:30 pm and Sun Feb 23 @ 2pm.
Where: Avalon Theatre (HOTB) 500 E Lake St, Minneapolis
Tickets: $18 (general), $15 (Student and Senior) and $12 (groups of 10+).
The event runs for 2 1/2 hours with an intermission.

In “Broken English, Mother Tongue,” Morillo weaves personal stories of growing up on a US Army base in Puerto Rico with the history of the Island’s complicated relationship to the United States. Note: the audience may be quizzed on its knowledge of Puerto Rican history—but don’t worry—like Puerto Rico, all answers are, well, complicated.

Beliza’s “Resabios de Amargura or that bitter cabaret” is a campy mixture of song, comedy, mistranslations and social critique that follows the story of Lola Amapola, a diva-wannabe that loves her country Puerto Rico but feels attracted to the U.S. mainland. She follows the “American Dream,” but things don’t turn out quite as planned. Will she stay in the U.S.? Will she go back home? Is there a home to go back to?

Sustainability-related grants – Deadline February 26

Looking for funding for sustainability-related course development, conference travel, research, internships, or other ideas? The College Sustainability grant we received is in its last year of funding, and the grant team is requesting all proposals for funding be made by February 26 in order to prioritize spending for the spring and summer. Remember that we think about sustainability broadly – environmental, economic, social, and personal wellness – on our campus, in our neighboring community, and among our institutional partners. It includes stewarding a culture of sustainability alongside of our most precious resources – Air, Land, Water, Built Environment, People, Food, and Energy.

Funding is available for:
Conference Travel: up to $750 faculty/$600 students
Course Development: $1,500
Faculty Research: $4,000
Student Research with Faculty Mentor: student stipend – $4,000; faculty stipend – $1,000
Off-Campus Internship with Community Partner – up to $4,200
Other: Flexible – depends on project needs and available funding

The proposals are selected for funding based on the following criteria:
-Relevance to the grant objectives
-Significance and potential for long-term impact on campus sustainability culture
-Interdisciplinarity, multifunctionality

“Wellness in Color” (https://namimn.org/category/podcast-episodes/wellness-in-color/) is a podcast series of the National Alliance of Mental Illness that explores perspectives on mental health to reshape the cultural language of mental illness. In the podcast young adults of color share their challenges and successes in mental health recovery and wellness. NAMI’s goal is “to reach collective cultural communities through positive reflections on wellness through discussions on why community members do not seek help for themselves or their loved one living with a mental illness.”

There will be a two part discussion. You can attend either of the two sessions for each part, but should attend both parts.

In the first part we will discuss three podcast episodes:

The deadline for submissions for the Instructional Course Design Grant has been extended to this coming Monday, 2/24, at noon.

About the ICD Grants:
-Designed to provide an opportunity for faculty to spend a significant amount of time on course design.
-The stipend amount is $2,000.

The 2020 ICD grants will prioritize course development which advances:
-The University mission of intentional commitment to diversity and creating more inclusive classroom experiences for students.
-Active and experiential learning opportunities.
-Interdisciplinary and problem-based modes of inquiry.

Proposals that clearly demonstrate the University’s mission of intentional commitment to diversity and creating inclusive classroom experiences for students may be eligible for an additional $500 ($2,500 total).

The Office of Grants & Sponsored Programs is hosting an event series to support ongoing grant proposal development among faculty and staff. The next session is Wednesday, February 26 (3:30 – 5pm) in Lindell 301.

The topic is Funding Searches & Small Grants. Mary Hollerich of Lindell Library will discuss how to conduct funding searches for grants, and how the Library can help during the lifecycle of your grant. OGSP will give numerous examples of small grants across the disciplines. Twenty minutes will be reserved at the end for writing, consultations, and planning.

Everyone is welcome to attend! If you have a specific interest in grant funding, please let us know in advance. You are welcome to attend even if you have not pinpointed your interest area. Please RSVP to causey@augsburg.edu and contact Lauren Causey with questions.
