Announcing our 2018 Peace Scholars

submitted by hermansb@augsburg.edu

We are excited to announce that Lex (Alexis) Dorfman and Kristian Evans have been selected the Augsburg University Peace Scholars for 2018. Together with 14 other students, from our Norwegian-American sister colleges, they will spend 7 weeks in Norway this summer to deepen their understanding of injustice, conflict and peace while gaining leadership skills studying in an international setting.

Lex Dorfman, who studies religion, Spanish and leadership, takes her Jewish background and the importance of Tikkun Olam (how to be of service to others) into her role as a Peace Scholar. She looks forward to continuing to build on her skills of engaging in and facilitating meaningful dialogue about core values, interfaith issues and the call to service and social justice from across traditions and perspectives.

Kristian Evans is a rising senior studying Political Science and Communication. As a Peace Scholar he will apply his skills of deep engagement and activism, as well as lessons learned during his fight with cancer, to deepen his understanding of creating change and establish peace. Kristian is interested in peacemaking on the global arena but is deeply engaged in making change locally.

Upon their return, Lex and Kristian, will be involved in our annual Nobel Peace Prize Forum, taking place at the Augsburg University campus—September 14 and 15, 2018—as well as extend their takeaways and implement their continued peacemaking efforts throughout the academic year.

This year we had an amazing pool of candidates, and we encourage them as well as new candidates to (re)apply in 2019! See the Peace Scholars Program website for more information.

Please help us congratulate Lex Dorfman and Kristian Evans as they embark on their role as the Augsburg University 2018 Peace Scholars!

This workshop will not only teach individuals about their own preferred approach and style, but it will also teach individuals about the preferred approaches and styles of others. Finally, this workshop will give participants tangible skills that can be used when navigating conflicts across cultural differences. The increased understanding of intercultural conflict styles and tangible skills participants will receive from this workshop can enhance their overall intercultural competence in resolving disagreements across cultures in addition to help them to create more inclusive campus spaces. Thank you for your participation: GCTWF Survey

submitted by peterlin@augsburg.edu

The Great Colleges to Work For survey officially closed on March 12th. THANK YOU to all who participated and provided their feedback. We appreciate your engagement and your voice. This year, we exceeded 2016’s all-time high participation rate by one percentage point and reached an outstanding overall survey response of 74%!

Over the summer, we will receive the results of the 2018 survey. Our plan is to share the data with the campus and, where applicable, individual departments and divisions, next fall. As with previous years, the survey results will help us to identify areas where opportunities for improvement exist and to establish plans to support those improvements.

Again, thank you for your participation and sharing your experience at Augsburg!

Jill Davenport’s retirement party on March 21

submitted by reissenw@augsburg.edu

It is a bittersweet feeling as I announce that Jill Davenport, Manager of Purchasing on Contract Services will retire Friday March 23rd after 8 1/2 years of dedicated service to Augsburg. Jill has been a wonderful Auggie working with great energy and enthusiasm! In 2016, Jill was honored with an Outstanding Staff Award for her fine work and service managing significant contract relationships for the bookstore, dining services and copy services. More recently, she facilitated a new policy to ensure that purchases were made with accessibility in mind, specifically with software purchases. I am especially grateful for Jill’s great work in stewarding the ACTC Purchasing consortium in-house at Augsburg, an important role that allowed us to keep this critical collaboration and formal engagement going forward. With only days to go, please take a moment to send Jill your good wishes for this next chapter of her journey. And, please come to a reception in Jill’s honor scheduled for Wednesday, March 21st at 2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. in the Marshall Room of the Christensen Center. (Formal remarks will begin at 2:30 p.m.)
