Farewell to Kristen Cooper Open House

Kristen shared some bittersweet news – she has accepted a new role at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School as their Vice President for Development. I’m excited to see how Kristen lives out her vocational calling in ways that benefit their compelling mission.

In this role, Kristen will be leading their efforts in fundraising, advancement services and alumni relations. She’s particularly excited about opportunities to work with local corporations and foundations, as well as their president, who just began this summer.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League (MNUDL) is a program of Augsburg University which provides academic competitive debate programming to middle and high school students in the Twin Cities Metro.

Join us (virtually) at the American Swedish Institute from 6:00 PM-7:45 PM on 9/22 for a showcase debate, performed by our students, on the topic of NATO and the Nordic Countries.

Her Excellency Ambassador of Sweden, Karin Olofsdotter, and Torleiv Opland, Deputy Chief of Mission, Norwegian Embassy in Washington D.C., will join and speak with us virtually. They’ll be joined in person by other VIPs at our 10th Anniversary of the Mayors Challenge: The Great NATO Debate, including Governor Tim Walz & First Lady Gwen Walz (confirmed), Mayor Jacob Frey (confirmed), and Mayor Melvin W. Cedar Riverside Multicultural Dinner – September 22

The Cedar Riverside Multicultural Dinner will be held on Thursday, September 22 from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM in Currie Park, adjacent to the Brian Coyle Community Center. Food from a variety of local restaurants will be featured. There will be performances celebrating the diverse cultures of Cedar Riverside. The Multicultural Dinner is an annual event intended to bring together people from all corners of the Cedar Riverside neighborhood to share a meal, celebrate the diversity of the neighborhood, and build community. All are welcome. There is no cost to attend.

Louis Stokes North Star STEM Alliance 2022 Kickoff

The Louis Stokes North Star STEM Alliance (LS-NSSA) Kickoff is an annual event for undergraduate students in the sciences to share their research projects, explore career and internship opportunities, and network with other STEM students, faculty and professionals. This year, ten Augsburg LS-NSSA Scholars that conducted research this past summer will be presenting their research posters. Everyone in the Augsburg community is welcome (and encouraged!) to attend.

The Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) is an initiative funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF Grant #1712619) which is intended to double the number of African-American/Black, Hispanic/Latino, Native American, Alaska Native, and Pacific Islander students receiving baccalaureate degrees in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) in a five-year period. In Minnesota, the LSAMP program is called the Louis Stokes North Star STEM Alliance (LS-NSSA). LS-NSSA is a partnership of 16 higher education institutions and 3 community partners in Minnesota.

Registration for the poster fair is still open, so if you have a research poster and would like to participate, please fill out this brief form: https://forms.gle/xHerxdGpZDr1FGgs7. Note: students must meet LS-NSSA eligibility requirements in order to present.

Chapel: Community Space Naming Loss and Seeking Healing

Join Campus Ministry and the Center for Wellness in Counseling today in Hoversten Chapel at 10:40 am in this interfaith time of community connection and shared healing at the outset of this academic year. Over the last two and a half years, the COVID-19 pandemic has generated deep loss among us and within our communities. We have witnessed the tragic loss of life on account of this disease around the globe, and some in our Augsburg community have experienced it intimately within their own circles of loved ones. We have also lost time and connection having navigated the complexities of lock-down, isolation, and ongoing social distancing. We have lost opportunities, hopes, and for many, a sense of security and wellbeing. These losses have taken their toll emotionally, physically, mentally.
We as community will offer a time to publicly name our loss and seek healing pathways as we journey together as an Augsburg community. Our gathering will offer words of reflection alongside space for quiet and song. Every participant will have an opportunity to mark their own loss as another step on healing’s path. All are welcome.

Chapel: Morning Prayer

Please join us in Hoversten Chapel at 11:30 am for a service of morning prayer. During this service we will also install our campus ministry musician Brian De Young. Brian De Young (he/him) joins Augsburg University after many years in church music ministry in congregations in Iowa, Michigan, and Minnesota. In addition to his role in Campus Ministry, he currently serves as the Director of Music at Olivet Congregational Church in St. Paul. With a bachelor’s degree in organ performance and graduate education in both church music and piano performance, Brian is a musician of broad skills and wide-ranging interests. Outside of Augsburg he may be seen performing classical chamber music, singing Renaissance and Baroque choral music, playing in a theatre pit orchestra, or on keys at a Twin Cities Tango Collective event. He lives in South Minneapolis with his partner Alena, daughters Nina and Elisabeth, and rescue mutt Copper.

We’re excited to announce a new on campus meeting for anyone in recovery (of any form), curious about recovery, or have loved ones who struggle with any form of addiction. It is hosted by StepUp students, but is in no way limited to only StepUp students or people with specifically substance abuse issues. This isn’t tied to AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) or NA (Narcotics Anonymous), it’s our own format and is completely fluid. We’re open to suggestions of any ways to better the meeting. Our focus is on providing a place to constructively process issues and work on spiritual development, whatever that may look like. $5 Tickets for Students to the September 1 Show at The Cedar

Kick off the new school year by attending a show at The Cedar, an amazing music venue located just a few blocks from campus. On September 1, any university/college student with a current student ID can get $5 tickets at the door, day of show! Note – this offer will only apply to showing up at the door time (7:00 PM) or after, not earlier than that. Here’s more information on show –

Thursday, September 1, MAKING MOVIES with Spaceglow, Doors Opn: 7:00 PM / Show 7:30 PM. Mixing classic rock and blues with rumba, merengue, cumbia, and mambo, Kansas City band Making Movies honors their members’ Mexican and Panamanian heritage and broadly encompasses the many sounds of the Americas. With this innovative approach, Rolling Stone said the quartet is “breaking down walls in the U.S.”
