Share Your Spanish Skills

Judge Spanish Debate – No Prior Experience Needed!

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a nonprofit program of Augsburg University. We provide debate programming to over 1,200 students in Minneapolis and Saint Paul, including our nearly 150 Spanish Debate League students. We’re looking for fluent, Spanish-speaking debate judges at tournaments this April.

What Judges Do:

Judges will observe rounds conducted completely in Spanish, determine winners for each round, and provide comments to help students improve their reading, critical thinking, and Spanish language skills.

Why Judge Spanish Debate League?

Participation in debate helps students improve their academic skills, including reading comprehension and critical thinking, increases their confidence, and provides access to higher education through the Augsburg Promise Scholarship. As a judge, you’ll be a part of creating these outcomes for our Spanish Debate League students!

Calling all cooks who love books! Lindell Library is hosting its first ever Edible Books Festival on Wednesday, April 1 and no, this is no April Fool’s joke! On that date, libraries around the world will host their own edible books festival and this year Lindell Library will join in the fun. To participate, you simply need to make a dish based on a book title or character or a literary theme, then enter it in the festival. Get creative, and the punnier you are, the better! It is nearly that time of year again! This spectacular event happens each spring at Augsburg University and we are very excited to be hosting the PowWow again this year, on Saturday, March 28, 2020. This event wouldn’t be possible without the amazing student and employee volunteers that help make this such a success. We are currently seeking volunteers for all shifts.

Student Volunteers: Augsburg Indigenous Student Association will be tabling in Christensen Center, near Einstein’s weekly and then daily in the next few weeks leading up to the PowWow. If you are not able to sign up in person, please email aisa@augsburg.edu. A member of AISA will follow-up with you to sign up.

Employee Volunteers: Sign up in the attached Google Doc with your name in the times that you will be volunteering. Please note that in addition to time you will be indicating volunteer role as well. In collaboration with QPA, LGBTQIA+ Student Services will be hosting a Big Gay (not so) Snow Day Friday, March 13th. Due to the unpredictable weather conditions, the snow tubing hill is closed for the season. Instead, we will be going to Roller Garden for rollerblading and rollerskating.

This event is taking the place of MBLGTACC – as we were not able to attend this year.

Post-rollerskating, we will be coming back to watch a film and enjoy pizza.

We will meet in the Auggies Nest by 4:00 pm

Augsburg Native American Film Series presents: PROTECTING INDIGENOUS AND SACRED LAND THROUGH MEDIA: BEARS EARS AND OTHER CURRENT STRUGGLES with filmmaker Angelo Baca.
Shásh Jaa’ (Bears Ears) encompasses 1.9 million acres of southeastern Utah wilderness and is considered sacred lands to local Native American tribes. The Bears Ears Inter-Tribal Coalition is an effort of 5 different tribal nations (Navajo, Ute, Ute Mountain Ute, Hopi, Zuni) coming together to protect this pristine ecological area from natural resource extraction development and environmental destruction. This documentary follows Angelo Baca and his grandmother, the director, and the developing Coalition’s efforts on the way to convince the Obama administration to make this area a designated National Monument with a collaborative management plan working in partnership with these tribes.
Join Angelo Baca (Navajo and Hopi) in his screening of Shásh Jaa’ (Bears Ears) and a discussion of current Indigenous land struggles concerning land, water, and natural resources.

Join LGBTQIA+ Student Services, 10 am to 2 pm in the East Commons for their scholarship fundraiser, (hair)Cutz 4 Queerz.

We will be hosting barbers & stylists from Fox Den Salon; this is an open, walk-in style event. All haircuts will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis. All haircuts are free-will donation, with a suggested donation of $20. All barbers and stylists are donating their time and energy – as all proceeds made will go towards the LGBTQIA+ Student Services Scholarship, which will be awarded at Lavender Celebration, April 16th.

This event is open to all faculty, staff, students, and the community.
Cuts are available for people of all genders and hair types.

Big news, we’ve already started getting donations for our fundraiser!

As a new incentive, we’re starting a ‘pay it forward’ initiative. Perhaps you can’t make it to the event, or have some extra cash to ‘pay forward’?! You can now sponsor a haircut.

The Ethiopian Student’s Association at Augsburg (ESA Augsburg) is hosting a discussion event around the issue of Ethiopian identity or what it means to be an Ethiopian which has remained controversial for a long time now. The theme for this event is: What does it mean to be an Ethiopian/Ethiopian Identity? We will have the Ethiopian traditional Coffee ceremony and we will be serving snacks along with the coffee while having interesting discussions. We plan to have a time where people share their stories and reflect which we anticipate to help us compromise and move forward as a community.

Augsburg’s CGEE study center in Southern Africa offers an experiential, community-based, social-justice focused semester program in fall or spring:

Nation Building and Decolonizing the Mind in Southern Africa

Stay on-track to graduate by taking 16+ credits. Courses are available in History, Political Science, Religion, wellness, or even choose an internship as part of your semester. All courses are in English. Your semester starts in South Africa and then continues on to Namibia. Study in TWO countries in one semester!

For fall 2020 only: CGEE is providing **FREE AIRFARE** for all Fall 2020 semester students in Southern Africa!

We will be hosting barbers & stylists from Fox Den Salon; this is an open, walk-in style event. All haircuts will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis. All barbers and stylists are donating their time and energy – as all proceeds made will go towards the LGBTQIA+ Student Services Scholarship, which will be awarded at Lavender Celebration, April 16th.

This event is open to all faculty, staff, students, and the community.

This event is taking the place of MBLGTACC – as we were not able to attend this year. So instead, this will be our Minnesota way of enjoying the outdoors, in the gayest way possible.
Post-snow-tubing, we will be coming back to watch a film and enjoy pizza.

We will meet in the Auggies Nest at 3:30 pm and leave no later than 4 pm.

This workshop has a hybrid, e-learning group format that provides participants with an introduction to understanding and responding to unconscious bias during workplace interactions and in workplace settings. Relevant to faculty and staff of all levels, participation in this workshop can positively impact all aspects of Augsburg University. Additionally, this workshop explores the hidden and pervasive nature of unconscious bias. More specifically, it examines how unconscious bias works in the human brain, how it impacts decisions, and how individuals can respond when they encounter it in themselves and others.

The EPIC peer health educators will be hosting an interactive educational program on Thursday 3/5/2020 from 6:30 – 8:00 pm in the East Commons on the real costs of Driving Under the Influence. We will welcome a MN State Trooper who will walk through a DUI stop as well as two current Augsburg students sharing their stories and experiences with driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol. The Ethiopian Student’s Association at Augsburg (ESA Augsburg) is hosting a discussion event around the issue of Ethiopian identity or what it means to be an Ethiopian which has remained controversial for a long time now. The theme for this event is: What does it mean to be an Ethiopian/Ethiopian Identity? Augsburg Native American Film Series presents: PROTECTING INDIGENOUS AND SACRED LAND THROUGH MEDIA: BEARS EARS AND OTHER CURRENT STRUGGLES with filmmaker Angelo Baca.
Shásh Jaa’ (Bears Ears) encompasses 1.9 million acres of southeastern Utah wilderness and is considered sacred lands to local Native American tribes. The Bears Ears Inter-Tribal Coalition is an effort of 5 different tribal nations (Navajo, Ute, Ute Mountain Ute, Hopi, Zuni) coming together to protect this pristine ecological area from natural resource extraction development and environmental destruction. This documentary follows Angelo Baca and his grandmother, the director, and the developing Coalition’s efforts on the way to convince the Obama administration to make this area a designated National Monument with a collaborative management plan working in partnership with these tribes.
Join Angelo Baca (Navajo and Hopi) in his screening of Shásh Jaa’ (Bears Ears) and a discussion of current Indigenous land struggles concerning land, water, and natural resources.

The EPIC peer health educators will be hosting an interactive educational program on Thursday 3/5/2020 from 6:30 – 8:00 pm in the East Commons on the real costs of Driving Under the Influence. We will welcome a MN State Trooper who will walk through a DUI stop as well as two current Augsburg students sharing their stories and experiences with driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol. The Ethiopian Student’s Association at Augsburg (ESA Augsburg) is hosting a discussion event around the issue of Ethiopian identity or what it means to be an Ethiopian which has remained controversial for a long time now. The theme for this event is: What does it mean to be an Ethiopian/Ethiopian Identity? We will have the Ethiopian traditional Coffee ceremony and we will be serving snacks along with the coffee while having interesting discussions. We plan to have a time where people share their stories and reflect which we anticipate to help us compromise and move forward as a community.

All barbers and stylists are donating their time and energy – as all proceeds made will go towards the LGBTQIA+ Student Services Scholarship, which will be awarded at Lavender Celebration, April 16th.

Staff Senate is now accepting nominations to honor outstanding staff and outstanding newcomers at Augsburg University! Nominations for the Outstanding Staff and Newcomer Awards will be accepted from February 3rd through February 21st. Nominations are welcomed from any current member of the campus community – staff, faculty, or student.

The Staff Appreciation Program is intended to recognize staff members who have made an important contribution to the campus community over the past year. Recipients of the Outstanding Staff Award provide exceptional service to others, work collaboratively across divisions or departments, demonstrate a clear commitment to equity and inclusion, and enhance the objectives of their department and the mission of Augsburg University through creativity, innovation, and hard work.

The Newcomer Award recognizes a staff person who has made a significant impact on campus life in a short amount of time. Staff who have been at Augsburg for two years or less (as of February 1, 2020) are eligible to receive this award.

Staff Senate will award five Outstanding Staff awards and one Newcomer award in a presentation on the afternoon of March 26th.

Augsburg’s CGEE study center in Southern Africa offers an experiential, community-based, social-justice focused semester program in fall or spring:

Nation Building and Decolonizing the Mind in Southern Africa

Stay on-track to graduate by taking 16+ credits. Courses are available in History, Political Science, Religion, wellness, or even choose an internship as part of your semester. All courses are in English. Your semester starts in South Africa and then continues on to Namibia. Study in TWO countries in one semester!

For fall 2020 only: CGEE is providing **FREE AIRFARE** for all Fall 2020 semester students in Southern Africa!

-Engage deeply with critical issues facing the U.S. and Mexico.

In collaboration with QPA, LGBTQIA+ Student Services will be hosting a Big Gay Snow Day Friday, March 13th. It’s a day filled with snow tubing, hot cocoa, friends, and fun.
This event is taking the place of MBLGTACC – as we were not able to attend this year. So instead, this will be our Minnesota way of enjoying the outdoors, in the gayest way possible.
Post-snow-tubing, we will be coming back to watch a film and enjoy pizza.

We will meet in the Auggies Nest at 3:30 pm and leave no later than 4 pm.

As a continuation of or Queering Career series, LGBTQIA+ Student Services is sponsoring visits to local businesses.

Saturday, March 28th, join LGBTQIA+ Student Services, TriBeta, & Strommen Center for Queering Career. This site visit, we will be traveling to the Hennepin County Crime Lab.

Within Hennepin County, the laboratory provides forensic services to over 35 local law enforcement agencies, the Minnesota State Patrol, and several federal law enforcement agencies. The laboratory is staffed by licensed peace officers and civilians serving in the following specialized areas:
DNA
Crime Scene Investigation
Evidence
Latent Print (Fingerprints)
Firearm Examination

We will be touring the lab spaces and learning about each specialized area above.

Queering Career Series works to promote the visibility of local, queer-owned businesses and employees.

This event is open to all LGBTQIA+ and ally identified day students at Augsburg.

We will meet in the Auggies Nest at 10 am, leave no later than 10:30 am, and will be back on campus by 12:30 pm. We will travel as a group on the light rail; day students who want to attend and do not have their Auggie Passes should go to the circulation desk on the first floor of Lindell Library or contact Brittany Stokes at stokesb@augsburg.edu.
