The connections between human health, economic wellbeing, social support systems, and environmental quality are being felt in many ways in this moment of global pandemic. Let’s celebrate our common home and the life that it supports in ways that honor our current realities, imagine a bright future, and take steps together towards that new reality!

Auggie Earth Week Details

Due to the impact of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and out of care and concern for the health and safety of the entire Augsburg University community, we are postponing the university’s first All-School Reunion that had been planned for Sept. 26, 2020.

The reunion will be rescheduled to coincide with Homecoming 2021. Those dates are still being finalized.

If you’ve already purchased tickets to the event, you have three options. First, you can do nothing—we will honor your registration for the new date in fall of 2021. Second, you can request a refund by emailing Kristen Cooper at cooperk@augsburg.edu. Finally, you can ask that Kristen convert your registration into a donation to the Student Emergency Fund to support current Auggies facing hardships during this challenging time.

The reunion will be an occasion to draw together alumni; current students; and past and present faculty, staff, and friends of the university to celebrate more than 150 years of Augsburg history and—most importantly—the relationships that have shaped the lives of generations of Auggies. We are also discussing ways to incorporate some of the Sesquicentennial projects by faculty and staff that were canceled or curtailed because of the pandemic.

We are grateful to the many volunteers working to make the All-School Reunion a reality, and while we know this postponement is disappointing, we promise: in the end, it will be an event worth waiting for!

Struggling with trying to adjust to the challenges of the COVID crisis? Join the Center for Wellness & Counseling next Wednesday, April 22nd from 2pm – 3:30pm for a short Zoom workshop for students called “Skills for Today: Using Skillful Means to Navigate Troubled Times.” Josh Kent of CWC will be leading the group along with some Augsburg students. The session will explore how focusing on skills development can help students decrease suffering and build a life worth living (even when the world around you doesn’t seem to point in that direction!) April 22 is the 50th anniversary of Earth Day!! While we can’t celebrate in person, we invite you to take collective action with Auggies near and far. The first Earth Day mobilized college students to demand action for clean air and water for everyone, and in this time of public health and climate crisis, we can still take action together towards long-term change that supports the health and wellbeing of us all. What can we transform? What could a revolutionary new normal look like? Whether you have the time, energy, and passion for taking small personal action, learning something new, building community, or advocating for policy change, we want to hear about it!

Stay tuned to Amail for details, but here’s the big picture of how we can celebrate together next week:

1. Join daily collective learning and action opportunities promoted by ESC – a different opportunity to act together each day.

2. Find other opportunities to take personal communal, and systemic action on a list we’ll share soon. Add your own ideas! Take action whenever you can, in whatever way you can!

3. Share your actions with the ESC facebook page or on other social media platforms using #AuggieEarthWeek2020 (and any other hashtags your networks are using this week).

4. Submit your actions (link shared next week), no matter how big or small, for a chance to win a sustainability care package!

Even before this pandemic arrived, Augsburg had made the decision, based on budgetary concerns, not to hold the Human Rights Forum this fall. This health crisis has only reinforced the wisdom of that decision, as we focus now on the transitions to online teaching and work and plan for the post-COVID environment.

Given the disruptions, loss, and inequities we are experiencing as a result of this public health crisis, there is a clear need to build community and strengthen our social fabric. We look forward to seeing how we can together be part of efforts to strengthen these resources and institutions. In relation to our collective commitment to human rights and justice, working towards equal access to quality healthcare will be a high priority coming out of this crisis. We will need to ensure that we are much better prepared when future crises emerge.

We also see the importance of a free press and free expression. It is citizens and journalists who have pushed our own leaders to action when, for political self-interest, they preferred to downplay the challenge that COVID posed. Internationally, it was the suppression of journalists and whistleblowers that allowed the crisis to fester in the first place. The huge economic, social, and humanitarian impacts of this outbreak speak to the need for building up our resilience and working together to address these and many other human rights challenges locally, nationally and globally.

We will be back in touch in the coming months with more information about our plans for 2021, when we all hope to have emerged from this ordeal with a greater sense of public purpose and commitment to care and support each other.

On April 13-14, the Human Rights Foundation (HRF), Augsburg’s partner during the 2019 Human Rights Forum, will host COVIDCon, a virtual Oslo Freedom Forum event focused on how authoritarian regimes sparked and are exploiting the novel coronavirus pandemic to crack down on civil liberties.

This two-day event, open to global audiences, will feature presentations and panels about the current pandemic and its relationship to state censorship, disinformation, surveillance, and the future of civil liberties. COVIDCon sessions will showcase the difference in the responses of authoritarian regimes and democratic governments to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus.

Confirmed speakers include former Chinese prisoner of conscience Dr. Yang Jianli; Russian democracy advocate Garry Kasparov; Iranian journalist and human rights activist Masih Alinejad; recently expelled Wall Street Journal deputy China bureau chief Josh Chin; entrepreneur and angel investor Naval Ravikant; Hong Kong pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong; futurist and “After On” author Rob Reid; Pulitzer Prize-winning author Anne Applebaum; Ideas Beyond Borders’ Melissa Chen; China-U.S. expert Kyle Bass; and many others.

Emerging Connection: A Queer Pen Pal Project! A way to connect with other LGBTQ+ folk from across the nation.

This project was born out of the desire to build Queer community and connection during this time of social distancing. Queer history has shown us that community is one of the ways we survive during challenging or uncertain times. We hope the relationships that blossom from this program help provide a sense of connection, belonging, and solidarity to our LGBTQ+ students across state and institutional lines.

Nation Building and Decolonizing the Mind in Southern Africa

Stay on-track to graduate by taking 16+ credits. Courses are available in History, Political Science, Religion, wellness, or even choose an internship as part of your semester. All courses are in English. Your semester starts in South Africa and then continues on to Namibia. Study in TWO countries in one semester!

In celebration of International Women’s Day (March 8th), CARE, Global Minnesota, Resources for the Enrichment of African Lives (REAL) and Augsburg University will bring together leaders from International and local NGOs to highlight the critical role of women’s leadership in preventing and combating gender-based violence globally.

It is estimated that at least one in three women globally will experience gender-based violence in their lifetime. Despite the overwhelming challenges women face in combatting gender-based violence, women are leading the way towards lives free from violence. Join us for a panel discussion featuring speakers who are combatting gender-based violence locally and globally and learn how you can take action!

The Augsburg English Department is pleased to announce that the winner of this year’s John R. Mitchell / Academy of American Poets Prize is Taiwana Shambley for the set of three poems entitled “The Market on Maryland Avenue,” “How to Love an Alcoholic in Two Parts, Ending with a Drunk Stumbling Down Maryland Avenue,” and “Identity Circle in Three Parts, Ending with a Trek Through the Antarctic Desert.” The prize honors the late English professor and poet, John Mitchell, and was established by his family.

Poet and Carleton Professor emerita of Theater and Dance Mary Moore Easter, who judged this year’s entries, “found original phrases, skillful observation, and vivid imagery throughout” Shambley’s poems. She also noted that she “enjoyed exploring the minds of this group of [Augsburg] poets,” who submitted their work for consideration.

Please join us in congratulating Taiwana Shambley on winning this notable honor, which carries with it a $100 award. Mary Moore Easter will read with Shambley on the evening of Wed, 25 March, at 7pm in Gundale Chapel, Hagfors. A reception will precede the event at 6:30. Easter will also sign copies of her book, The Body of the World. All are welcome.

In collaboration with QPA, LGBTQIA+ Student Services will be hosting a Big Gay (not so) Snow Day Friday, March 13th. Due to the unpredictable weather conditions, the snow tubing hill is closed for the season. Instead, we will be going to Roller Garden for rollerblading and rollerskating.

This event is taking the place of MBLGTACC – as we were not able to attend this year.

Post-rollerskating, we will be coming back to watch a film and enjoy pizza.

We will meet in the Auggies Nest by 4:00 pm and leave promptly at 4:30 pm.

Share Your Spanish Skills

Judge Spanish Debate – No Prior Experience Needed!

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a nonprofit program of Augsburg University. We provide debate programming to over 1,200 students in Minneapolis and Saint Paul, including our nearly 150 Spanish Debate League students. We’re looking for fluent, Spanish-speaking debate judges at tournaments this April.

What Judges Do:

Judges will observe rounds conducted completely in Spanish, determine winners for each round, and provide comments to help students improve their reading, critical thinking, and Spanish language skills.

Why Judge Spanish Debate League?

Participation in debate helps students improve their academic skills, including reading comprehension and critical thinking, increases their confidence, and provides access to higher education through the Augsburg Promise Scholarship. As a judge, you’ll be a part of creating these outcomes for our Spanish Debate League students!

Calling all cooks who love books! Lindell Library is hosting its first ever Edible Books Festival on Wednesday, April 1 and no, this is no April Fool’s joke! On that date, libraries around the world will host their own edible books festival and this year Lindell Library will join in the fun. To participate, you simply need to make a dish based on a book title or character or a literary theme, then enter it in the festival. Get creative, and the punnier you are, the better! Think: Lord of the Fries… Don Chipotle… For Whom the Taco Bell Tolls! Or, play it straight with Grapes of Wrath or James and the Giant Peach. It is nearly that time of year again! This spectacular event happens each spring at Augsburg University and we are very excited to be hosting the PowWow again this year, on Saturday, March 28, 2020. This event wouldn’t be possible without the amazing student and employee volunteers that help make this such a success. We are currently seeking volunteers for all shifts.

Student Volunteers: Augsburg Indigenous Student Association will be tabling in Christensen Center, near Einstein’s weekly and then daily in the next few weeks leading up to the PowWow. If you are not able to sign up in person, please email aisa@augsburg.edu. A member of AISA will follow-up with you to sign up.

Employee Volunteers: Sign up in the attached Google Doc with your name in the times that you will be volunteering. Please note that in addition to time you will be indicating volunteer role as well. Honorariums for registered dancers and drums. Dancer honorarium: Registered dancers only, must be in full regalia. Drum honorarium: Split for first 10 registered drum groups, 5 singer minimum, no drum hopping.

Registration for drums and dancers starts at 11:00 AM – No pre-registration.

Craft and informational vendors are welcome (no food vendors or colleges/universities). Space is limited, first-come, first-served. All vendors must complete application and get approved prior to coming. Email or call for more information.

In collaboration with QPA, LGBTQIA+ Student Services will be hosting a Big Gay (not so) Snow Day Friday, March 13th. Due to the unpredictable weather conditions, the snow tubing hill is closed for the season. Instead, we will be going to Roller Garden for rollerblading and rollerskating.

This event is taking the place of MBLGTACC – as we were not able to attend this year.

Post-rollerskating, we will be coming back to watch a film and enjoy pizza.

We will meet in the Auggies Nest by 4:00 pm

Next Tuesday, March 17, Augsburg will host the annual CAIR Minnesota Challenging Islamophobia conference. The conference runs from 9:00a.m. – 4:30p.m. Because the Augsburg Political Science Department is a co-host, anyone from the Augsburg community can attend for free. Norway House is welcoming quests speakers to discuss higher education opportunities in Norway. Among them is the current Norwegian Ambassador to the USA, Kåre R. Aas, who will be promoting the possibilities and benefits of higher education in Norway.

Augsburg Native American Film Series presents: PROTECTING INDIGENOUS AND SACRED LAND THROUGH MEDIA: BEARS EARS AND OTHER CURRENT STRUGGLES with filmmaker Angelo Baca.
Shásh Jaa’ (Bears Ears) encompasses 1.9 million acres of southeastern Utah wilderness and is considered sacred lands to local Native American tribes. The Bears Ears Inter-Tribal Coalition is an effort of 5 different tribal nations (Navajo, Ute, Ute Mountain Ute, Hopi, Zuni) coming together to protect this pristine ecological area from natural resource extraction development and environmental destruction. This documentary follows Angelo Baca and his grandmother, the director, and the developing Coalition’s efforts on the way to convince the Obama administration to make this area a designated National Monument with a collaborative management plan working in partnership with these tribes.
Join Angelo Baca (Navajo and Hopi) in his screening of Shásh Jaa’ (Bears Ears) and a discussion of current Indigenous land struggles concerning land, water, and natural resources.

Join LGBTQIA+ Student Services, 10 am to 2 pm in the East Commons for their scholarship fundraiser, (hair)Cutz 4 Queerz.

We will be hosting barbers & stylists from Fox Den Salon; this is an open, walk-in style event. All haircuts will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis. All haircuts are free-will donation, with a suggested donation of $20. All barbers and stylists are donating their time and energy – as all proceeds made will go towards the LGBTQIA+ Student Services Scholarship, which will be awarded at Lavender Celebration, April 16th.

This event is open to all faculty, staff, students, and the community.
Cuts are available for people of all genders and hair types.

Big news, we’ve already started getting donations for our fundraiser!

As a new incentive, we’re starting a ‘pay it forward’ initiative. Perhaps you can’t make it to the event, or have some extra cash to ‘pay forward’?! You can now sponsor a haircut.

During the event, we will be keeping track of ‘pay it forward’ cuts for anyone in need…we have enough donations for 3 haircuts.
