Join our delegation of Peace Volunteers at the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize Forum on September 13-15 to work along side of leaders, social justice champions, and peacemakers from around the world!

This years theme is the Paradox of Water and the Paradox of Peace. Beatrice Fihn of ICAN will be on campus as a keynote speaker and we will also be exploring the peace process in Colombia under President Juan Manuel Santos.

The MFA in Creative Writing 2018 Summer Residency will begin on Thursday, July 19 through Sunday, July 29. Please join us in welcoming our group of very talented students and acclaimed writers to campus for this festival of craft talks, workshops, evening readings and more. This summer’s visiting writers include Katelynn Hibbard, winner of the Howling Bird Press Poetry Award; fiction writer Ted Thompson; creative nonfiction writer Kao Kalia Yang, and screenwriter Andrew Rosendorf.

In addition, nine graduating MFA students will be giving public readings of their works: Monica Birrenkott, Allyson Dwyer, Michael Ferraro, Gina Musto, Ciara Hall, Roz Perry, Ryan Purdy, Eric Rasmussen and Robby Steltz.

The Fulbright Student Program fully funds students to study, research, or serve as an English teaching assistant abroad for a year (no teaching experience required!). During their year abroad, Fulbrighters meet, work, live with and learn from the people of the host country, sharing daily experiences. The program facilitates cultural exchange through direct interaction on an individual basis in the classroom, field, home, and in routine tasks, allowing participants to gain an appreciation of others’ viewpoints and beliefs, the way they do things, and the way they think.

Past Augsburg students have been selected for Fulbright Awards to countries such as Czech Republic, South Korea, Ecuador, Malaysia, Peru, Turkey, Taiwan, Kenya, Poland and Germany (and more!), and six Augsburg graduates will be going abroad this upcoming year as Fulbrighters! Augsburg’s focus on cross-cultural engagement and community involvement makes Auggies particularly strong candidates who are well-prepared to make the most of a Fulbright experience.

There are several unscrupulous businesses out there who attempt to sell you outrageously priced toner over the phone. We have already gotten a call from someone (mis)representing themselves as our vendor – Marco, and referencing our new fleet of Sharp copiers. They may start with asking you what is the model or ID# of the copier near your desk. They may say they have extra stock of the toner you need or the price is due to increase. They may offer to ship you a toner on trial. Regardless of what they say, don’t give them any information. All you need to know is that you get toner for your copier or printer by calling the Copy Center at extension x1054. You will never need to purchase toner for machines in your area. A quick way to ditch these “toner phoners” is to tell them you would like to transfer them to the person in the organization who purchases toner – they will hang up before you can transfer them!

The Fulbright Student Program fully funds students to study, research, or serve as an English teaching assistant abroad for a year (no teaching experience required!). Twenty-three new TRIO/SSS Summer Bridgers moved into the residential halls yesterday and to begin their degree at Augsburg! These first-year students were selected from a large pool of applicants to participate in the 17th year of TRIO Summer Bridge which will run from Sunday, July 8th – Thursday, August 9th, 2018.

Summer Bridge students will be taking REL 100: Christian Vocation and the Search for Meaning with Dr. Mark Tranvik, and COM 111: Introduction to Public Speaking with Dr. Robert Groven. Students will also participate in Supplemental Instruction sessions, attend workshops to learn more about Augsburg University and college life, and take part in social and cultural enrichment activities.

The Summer Bridge program and TRIO/SSS are jointly funded by the U.S. Department of Education and Augsburg University. Additional funding is provided by the Minnesota Department of Education and the USDA Summer Food Service Program. Augsburg University generally provide Summer Bridge Promise Grants to students upon successful completion of the TRIO/SSS Summer Bridge program! Students will be required to fulfill additional requirements throughout the school year as part of the Summer Bridge Promise Grant. A great deal of appreciation goes to everyone who continues to help us make this program a huge success every year!

Eligible students for TRIO/SSS and Summer Bridge must be either first generation, low income, and/or have a documented disability, and meet academic need requirements. China’s recent shift in policy regarding recyclable material has many state and local governments reexamining how they manage a growing influx of plastics, glass, and other recyclables. But Minnesota’s public and private sectors have made strategic investments in recycling over the past 30-plus years. The state has an opportunity to be a leader, as we are seeking to increase the number of businesses that use recycled materials. Minnesotans wondering about shifting world markets need to stay the course — keep recycling, but recycle right. Learn more by visiting the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency’s web site and searching for “recycle more.” (https://www.pca.state.mn.us/waste/recycle-more)

While Minnesotans do better than most parts of the country at proper recycling, unrecyclable materials in recycling containers is still a huge problem. Recycled materials that are “contaminated’ with trash and the like create inefficiencies and reduce profitability for recycling facilities.

How can you help?

Avoid “wish-cycling” — Only include materials your hauler will accept in your bin. Don’t just throw it in and assume a processing facility will sort it out!

Don’t put plastic bags, garden hoses, toys, syringes, or diapers in your recycling container.

Do not use your recycling bin as a garbage overflow.

Participants needed for a psychology experiment on eye movements during reading.

Participants will view a series of paragraphs on a computer screen and locate grammatical errors in the passage using a computer mouse. A camera will track and record eye activity during the proofreading task.

Compensation: $5

Time commitment: 15 – 20 minutes

Participants will have their eye movements monitored by a specialized camera while making judgments about images of human faces. The study is expected to take 30 minutes, and eligible participants will receive $10 USD as compensation. I am pleased to announce several changes designed to better align and integrate international education operations at Augsburg. All are effective immediately.

International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS)
ISSS reporting lines will shift from Student Affairs to Academic Affairs, permitting closer collaboration in global exchange programs between ISSS and the Center for Global Education & Experience (CGEE). Jim Trelstad-Porter, the Director of ISSS, will report to the Assistant Provost of Global Education & Experience. Angela Bonfiglio, the ISSS International Student Advisor, will move to a year-round position and continue reporting to the Director of ISSS. Her responsibilities will be split between her role as international student advisor and a new role recruiting non-Augsburg students for CGEE’s semester programs.

Center for Global Education & Experience (CGEE)
In addition to existing responsibilities for advising Augsburg students who wish to study abroad, Maren Stoddard Mack will take over coordination of off-campus undergraduate programs led by Augsburg faculty (a.k.a. faculty-led programs). Peggy Johnson will continue to coordinate graduate and nursing faculty-led programs.

As mentioned above, Angela Bonfiglio will begin dedicating half her time to recruiting semester-long CGEE students from other colleges and universities. Non-Augsburg students bring additional diversity and dynamism to CGEE programs, and they produce additional revenue.

Norway Hub
The Norway Hub will now be more intentionally linked to Augsburg’s broader international education efforts, with the reporting line for Bettine Hermanson, the hub’s Managing Director, shifting to the Assistant Provost of Global Education & Experience.

Each year, five faculty members from each of the ELCA Colleges come together to explore the distinct roles that they play in higher education. One of the benefits being the host site is that we have the option of inviting more than five people to attend. This year’s theme is “Civil Discourse in a Fragmented and Multi-Religious Society.”
The conference will begin with an opening session at 5 pm followed by a dinner at 7:00 pm on July 16 and conclude by 1:00 pm on July 18.

Mohamed Sallam, Director of the Pan-Afrikan Center, Advisor for the Pan-Afrikan Student Union (PASU), and Co-Director for the Scholastic Connections program, has accepted the position of Director of International Programs with the Higher Education Consortium for Urban Affairs (HECUA) in St. Paul. Mohamed will begin at HECUA on July 9, 2018. His work will include overseeing HECUA’s five international sites (Ecuador, Italy, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, and Norway), leading faculty and curriculum development, and assessment and research.

Mohamed’s last day at Augsburg will be Friday July 6, 2018, and we will celebrate his contributions from 11:30-1 pm, Oyate Commons, Christensen Center. Lunch will be provided. As well, we will host Mohamed in the fall after classes have resumed, so more can wish him well personally.

Approve and code invoices in Agresso through the AP Paperless process for May 2018. You will receive a system email if you have an invoice task.
