Audition for the 2017-2018 Augsburg Choir

Auditions for the 2017-2018 Augsburg Choir will be held in the Music Building (Choir Room – M3) on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, April 24, 25 and 26.

HISTORY: The choir, now in its 84th year, is one of Augsburg’s oldest ongoing organizations. For the past 37 years it has been the anchor ensemble of the college’s Advent Vespers which is attended by some 8000 people each year.

THIS NEXT YEAR: Mark Sedio (’76) will continue as conductor for this forthcoming academic year. In addition to his role at Augsburg, Sedio is Cantor (Director of Music) at Central Lutheran Church in downtown Minneapolis. He is a widely published composer, choral and organ clinician, stand-up comedian, teacher and a specialist in multi-cultural/world music. This forthcoming year the choir will not only focus on choral repertoire from Europe (i.e. Iceland, Slovakia, Germany, Estonia), the United States and Latin America – but will partner with the National Lutheran Choir and Palestinian ethnomusicologist Zafer Tawil for a program highlighting music of the Middle East and North Africa.

SCHEDULE: The Augsburg Choir meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 4:30 to 6:00 (usually 5:40 to accommodate evening classes).

WHO? YOU! Membership in the choir (by audition) is open to ANY and ALL Augsburg undergraduate students – regardless of discipline/major. Over the years we’ve worked out schedules to include those involved in athletics (football, soccer, lacrosse) and theater.

HOW? Sign-up sheets for auditions will be available at the CHOIR DESK in Christensen Hall (10:30 to 11:30) and will then be posted outside the choir room in the music building. No preparation necessary.

Augsburg CSA Drop Site

This summer the Augsburg community will have the wonderful opportunity to purchase fresh produce that will be delivered to Augsburg College in the form of a CSA share beginning mid-June. The share will contain a variety of seasonally appropriate produce. One can expect to find treats such as basil, carrots, cilantro, sweet corn, potatoes, peppers and tomatoes at some point over the summer. Delivery begins mid-June and lasts for 18 weeks or through mid-October. The food is grown on a 140 acre farm near Plato, MN. Purchasing local produce helps to support the local economy. The farmers who grow this produce are devoted to using only natural botanical and biological methods to control pests. They use other sustainable farming practices such as biodiversity, crop rotation, cover cropping and natural fertilizers to deliver healthy and nutritious produce to the table. Annually we rely on staff, current students and alumni to assist with rehearsal as well as ushering and ticket taking at the ceremony for they strongly contribute to the success and smooth flow of the event. There is also the chance to see some of the ceremony with most ushering responsibilities.

Help is most needed at the AU/Grad Ceremony, but also:

Summer student rates will be as follows:

Steps to follow when hiring a student worker for summer 2017

1. Students returning into a position they held previously will only need a Student Employment Hire Form submitted through Hirezon/Interview Exchange.

2. Looking for a student worker to hire? Any new position will need to be posted through Human Resources to the internal student jobs board. Student Requisitions can be submitted though Hirezon/Interview Exchange. Once it’s submitted, we will post the position online. Hiring managers will be able to view applications in real time through the system.

3. When you’ve selected a student to hire, complete the Student Employment Hire Form through Hirezon/Interview Exchange. Students who have never worked on campus before will need to fill out additional HR forms, including a background check, before they will be authorized to work.

Academy of American Poets John R. Mitchell Award Announced

Senior English major Anne Dierberger has won the 2017 Academy of American Poets John R. Milton Award for her poem, “Them, again.” Marimar Bustos received Honorable Mention for her poem, “Recounting El Mozote.” The judge was Matt Rasmussen, National Book Award finalist and winner of the Walt Whitman Award and visiting poet at Gustavus Adolphus College.

Calling all study abroad returnees and international students. The Center for Global Education & Experience is hiring a new Peer Advisor to start this summer.

This is a key office support position supporting students who want to study abroad or study away in the US. Responsibilities in this position include: Peer Advising, library upkeep, office management, Event Promotion, Maintenance of online application system, and study abroad/away promotion through peer-to-peer outreach, class visits, tabling, and social media.

We can offer 15-35 hours per week this summer (depending on your schedule/needs) and/or starting in August. During the semesters, we offer 10 hours per week.

Study Abroad/Away Is Hiring Student Workers

Study Abroad/Away is hiring.

Calling all study abroad returnees and international students. The Center for Global Education & Experience is hiring a new Peer Advisor to start this summer.

This is a key office support position supporting students who want to study abroad or study away in the US. Responsibilities in this position include: Peer Advising, library upkeep, office management, Event Promotion, Maintenance of online application system, and study abroad/away promotion through peer-to-peer outreach, class visits, tabling, and social media.

We can offer 15-35 hours per week this summer (depending on your schedule/needs) and/or starting in August. During the semesters, we offer 10 hours per week.

Jila Nikpay’s Upcoming Film Screenings

The Nobel Peace Prize Forum is seeking students who can act as hosts for visiting students in the Fall of 2017 during the important event days. Students are asked to step forward as hosts to other college and university students who will be visiting the Twin Cities for the Forum from the 14th-16th of September. Students will be coming from all over the country (as far as Hawaii) and we may also have a few international students on campus.
If you know you are living on campus next Fall, then you would make a perfect host! Anderson, Luther, and Mortensen would make great spaces for visiting students to stay, but any on campus living area would be fantastic. We are looking for students who would be willing to help out and provide space for 2-3 nights.
As a host you will have the opportunity to get to know a student outside of Augsburg. It is a great experience that allows you to meet some new faces and contribute to the college’s rich academic community. You will serve as another student’s introduction to the Twin Cities, and have the opportunity to connect with non-Augsburg students.

New Theology and Public Leadership Degree

The Religion department will be launching a new degree in Theology and Public Leadership in the fall of 2017. This degree program will be replacing the Youth and Family Ministry Degree. New Director of Latinx Student Services Starts Today

We are pleased to announce Ruby Murillo as the new director of Latinx Student Services! Ruby comes to Augsburg from Inver Hills Community College, where she served as an academic advisor for TRiO/SSS, Traveler’s EDGE, undocumented, and DACA students. Ruby has a bachelor of science degree in psychology from Iowa State University and a master of science degree in student affairs in higher education from Miami University in Ohio. Her first day at Augsburg will be Monday, April 10. Please join us in welcoming Ruby!

Help Inspire Hagfors Center Artists!

We are looking for contributions to artwork to be installed in the new Hagfors Center. Two artists are looking for text passages to accompany three pieces designed for the new building, and we are looking for student input. Selections of text may come from any literary work or religious text of any faith tradition, as long as they are inspiring and fitting with the spirit of the artwork. Display boards depicting the artwork designs will be posted around campus, where anyone may fill out a slip and drop it in the submission box. Augsburg Professor to Screen Documentary at MSPIFF

Jila Nikpay, instructor in film, will be screening her original documentary “Dreaming with Lola” at the Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival on April 23.

“Dreaming With Lola” is a documentary short. Following her dream of owning a small farm, Khaiti Hallstein struggles with the uncertainty of her work yet keeps a sense of humor when faced with unexpected life lessons from her ducks.

Rochester Grad Fair on April 10

There will be a Grad Fair for our Rochester students. This Grad Fair will be from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. on Monday, April 10, at Bethel Lutheran Church, 810 3rd Avenue SE, Rochester, MN 55904.

There will also be treats to celebrate this exciting time for our Graduates.

Want to know what your Graduation Garb will cost Monday at the Fair?
Bachelor’s cap, gown, tassel is regularly $64.98, but on Monday you will receive a $10 discount for a Grad Fair Price of $54.98.

Master’s cap, gown, tassel, hood is regularly $100.98, but on Monday you will receive a $10 discount for a Grad Fair Price of $90.98.

Help Inspire Hagfors Center Artists

We are looking for contributions to artwork to be installed in the new Hagfors Center. Two artists are looking for text passages to accompany three pieces designed for the new building, and we are looking for student input. Selections of text may come from any literary work or religious text of any faith tradition, as long as they are inspiring and fitting with the spirit of the artwork. Display boards depicting the artwork designs will be posted around campus, where anyone may fill out a slip and drop it in the submission box. We will be having our Grad Fair today in the Augsburg College Bookstore from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.- 6 p.m. We will have representatives from Herff Jones on-site, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., to assist with any questions you may have about regalia, class ring purchase and any other graduation needs you may have.

There will also be treats to celebrate this exciting time for our Graduates.

Can’t make it into the bookstore? No problem. Call and charge your graduation garb over the phone, and have it shipped to you for a flat $7.50 fee. (No expedited orders please as expedited shipping is not available. Shipping out UPS/UPS pick-up only happens once a day.)

Additional “All About Bias” Workshop Offered

An additional “All About Bias” workshop has been added in May.

“All About Bias” is a hybrid, group-format e-learning workshop that is a part of the Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program and provides an introduction to understanding and responding to unconscious bias in any workplace setting or interaction. Relevant to employees of all levels, participation in this workshop can positively impact all aspects of an organization. This workshop explores the hidden and pervasive nature of unconscious bias – how it works in the human brain, how it can impact workplace interactions and decisions, and how individuals can respond when they encounter it in themselves.

The HPE Department is collecting gently used athletic shoes and equipment for the Cedar Riverside School and the Check it out program. Please drop off items at the collection boxes located in the 3rd floor of Kennedy Center and Sabo Center. We will collect items until April 21. Yard games would be greatly appreciated, but any donations would be great.

Augsburg Film wins Crystal Pillar Award from the Upper Midwest Emmy® Chapter/Foundation

Congratulations to Jake Moore, senior film student, recipient of a Student Production Crystal Pillar Award from the Upper Midwest Emmy® Chapter/Foundation for his animated short film “Interface.” “Interface” is short animation that asks: What is time? Is it real? Why do we follow its seemingly strict structure? An intruder brings these questions to light.

Moore accepted the award at the annual National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences-Upper Midwest Student Production Awards ceremony held Friday, March 31.

Augsburg films were nominated in fiction, documentary, animation, and public affairs/community service.

Thank you Auggie Blood Donors

At last week’s Memorial Blood Center spring blood drive Augsburg achieved its highest ever percentage of donations at 105% That means from just last week’s drive alone Auggies helped save potentially 103 lives!! Twenty-two donors were first timers — thank you. Eight donors were double red call donors — thank you, too.

CWC also wants to thank Taylor Mattice and the Student Athlete Advisory Council for their partnership in tabling and promoting the event as well as having student athletes assist the day of the donation at the snack bar area.

Thank you again and we will be back in October for our fall blood drive.

Commencement Help Needed 2017

Are you wanting to take part in Commencement as we send off our graduating seniors? Help with staffing Commencement! Annually we rely on our volunteers to help assist with ushering and ticket taking at the ceremony. Our volunteers strongly contribute to the success and smooth flow of the event.

-Undergraduate Graduation: Saturday, April 29 from 8:00-11:30 a.m.
-Adult Day/Graduate Studies Graduation: Saturday, April 29 from 2:00-5:30 p.m.

Dental Hygiene Item Drive

Do you have extra unused dental hygiene items around??

Bring these items (toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss) back to school and donate them to the Pre-Dental Student Club Hygiene Item Drive! We will be collecting donations through the end of the semester, keep an eye out for boxes around campus!
