Welcome Janet Morales to the STEM Programs Team

submitted by dupont@augsburg.edu

Please join us in welcoming Janet Morales as the STEM Programs Grants Coordinator. She will divide her time in this part-time position between the NSF PRISM Scholarship Grant and the NSF PROSPECT grant which was awarded in April of 2022. The NSF PRISM grant supports STEM scholarship cohorts at Augsburg along with three community colleges. The NSF PROSPECT grant is a NSF scholarship research hub which will explore how equitable partnerships between two-year colleges and four-year institutions can empower low-income STEM transfer students. Researchers at Clemson University, East Carolina University, Southeast Community College, the University of Missouri-Kansas City, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Augsburg University, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, the University of Texas at Arlington, and YNOTI Solutions along with 14 two-year college partners are united by their goal to support domestic, low-income undergraduates as they navigate the transfer process.

Janet brings a strong record of working to increase access to higher education. She worked at Augsburg for over a decade in both admissions and managing the Traveler’s EDGE Scholarship program and has spent the last three years working for the Minnesota Department of Corrections working to increase access to higher education for incarcerated individuals. We are very fortunate to have her join the STEM Programs team!

Janet will be on campus in the McNair/URGO/STEM Suite, Hagfors 101 on most Tuesdays and Wednesdays until 1:30 PM. She can be reached at moralesj@augsburg.edu.

Auggie Pride Recipient for September: Olee Amata and Tyler LeClear Vachta

submitted by assal@augsburg.edu

Congratulations to our Auggie Pride Award winners for the month of September, Olee Amata, Financial Analyst FP&A, and Tyler LeClear Vachta, HR Data and Reporting Analyst.

Regarding Olee, “In the last month or so, Olee has provided detailed information and support for some programs in the Professional Studies division. Her thoughtfulness and attention to our requests is deeply appreciated.”

In regards to Tyler, “Tyler has been so responsive to CGEE’s unique HR and Technology needs. He understands our business, and when he doesn’t he asks great questions to help solve the problem. He approaches his work from an acceptance/adaptation mindset — he doesn’t expect everyone (or department) to do things the same way. He finds approaches that follow University systems and policies, while also adapting to others’ unique set of needs.”

The Augsburg staff senate is happy to recognize their amazing work. Congratulations Olee and Tyler!!

15 of ??? Readers — Are You Another?

submitted by laipa@augsburg.edu

So far, 15 people have stamped our display to indicate they’ve read one of 25 most frequently challenged books of the last 3 years. Are you another?

Stop by Lindell Library’s display for Banned Books Week, September 18-24, 2022, on the street level by the Augsburg yearbooks and put your stamp on our easel to let us know if you are one of our freedom readers!

Books on the frequently challenged books list were banned, challenged, and restricted for LGBTQIA+ content; because they were considered to have sexually explicit images; for profanity and violence; and because they were thought to promote an anti-police message and indoctrination of a social agenda.

Updated Lead Time for the Copy Center

submitted by longj@augsburg.edu

With the 2022-23 school year we have some changes to the Central Services. We are going down to a three-person staff:

Billy Callen – Copy Center
Jeni Long – Mail Room/Site Lead
Cody Hua – Shipping/Receiving

With the change in staffing levels we need to change the print project lead time to 24-hours. Please be sure to call the Copy Center (612-330-1054) before submitting anything needed sooner. The smoothest process to having your print job completed in time is to submit it using the Augsburg Copy Request system, https://sites.augsburg.edu/centralservices/copy-center-costs/.

Printer support calls/paper request may now take up to 3 hours for Central Services to have someone free to come and look at it. Please call us when your put in your second to last ream of paper to avoid being completely out of paper. If you do not have a back up printer option please ask IT how to add the printer driver to your computer so if the main printer you use is waiting for service you have another option to send your documents to. The Copy Center is also an option at the link above.

Need a Package

submitted by longj@augsburg.edu

We have been trying to fix the issue of packages being left in random places around campus. If you see a package delivered to someplace other then Shipping/Receiving please let us know or bring it in so we can get it to the correct person.

To help the flex drivers find the correct building please use the Christensen Center’s building address when ordering instead of the general campus address. Please make sure you have your full name on the order.

High Holy Days Primer

submitted by dames@augsburg.edu

We are entering the Jewish High Holy Day season, which runs for the entire lunar month of Tishrei this year from Monday evening, September 6 – Wednesday, September 29. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are listed on secular calendars, but there is another 9-day holiday called Sukkot, right after Yom Kippur. It is a big harvest celebration but it is not listed on calendars.
The second set of holidays, Sukkot, is likely much less observed among our Jewish students and faculty, though some students will not go to class on the first two and last two days of Sukkot (dates below).
For college students, being away from home for these holidays can highlight the homesickness and the yearning to be in the nest, and for some, quite the opposite. If you celebrate Christmas, imagine staying on campus while most students return home for the holiday. If you celebrate Ramadan, this season is similar to that month of observance. The University of Minnesota Hillel will welcome students and can be reached through http://www.mnhillel.org.
The greeting for this season is, “Sha-NAH to-VAH”. meaning Happy New Year.
How to be an ally: We encourage you to have conversations with your Jewish students and colleagues about their observances. If you are aware that students or colleagues are Jewish, it would likely be welcomed to ask them how they observe the holidays and what they mean to them. Since Jewish students and colleagues may or may not self-identify, you may want to announce an invitation to ”any Jewish students/faculty” to talk with you about what this next month is for them, vis a vis classes or being far (or near) family. To further be an ally you could also move important meetings or events away from Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
