Campus Ministry Welcomes Hannah Sackett

Campus Ministry welcomes Hannah Sackett (she/her) as the new pastoral intern for the 2022-23 academic year. Hannah is originally from Becker, Minnesota and received an undergraduate degree in Vocal Music Education & Religion from Luther College in 2016. She is nearing the end of her MDiv studies at Luther Seminary, and now lives in Northeast Minneapolis. Since undergrad, Hannah has guided canoe trips at a camp in the BWCA, worked at Urban Ventures in south Minneapolis, been involved in local urban farms & food co-ops, and currently works as a birth doula. She also served as a Young Adult in Global Mission (YAGM) in Rwanda from 2017-2018. Hannah has grown up in the ELCA and is grateful for all of the incredible folks who have journeyed with her throughout discernment; because of their impact and support, she is particularly excited to similarly accompany and hold space for others on their own paths. Outside of internship, you might find her biking, backpacking, playing word games with her fiance, Brandon, or taking too many pictures of her cat, Judith. Hannah is thrilled to join the Augsburg Campus Ministry team!

URGO Department is Hiring Health Professions Specialist

The office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity (URGO) is hiring a full-time Health Professions Specialist to coordinate the prehealth program at Augsburg University.

The Health Professions Specialist will be charged with developing, supporting, and maintaining a high-quality prehealth program as well as advising prehealth students directly. This includes providing support and advice to current students, as well as alumni, who are considering a wide range of health professions and assisting them with finding vocational fit; assisting students with the health professional school application processes, providing information on entrance exams, fee waiver applications, accommodation requests, and interviews; collecting and disseminating information regarding health professions to students, faculty, and staff; collecting and maintaining data regarding students’ acceptances to health-related professional schools; coordinating campus health professions events; and developing relationships with health professions schools and programs to benefit applicants as well as alumni working in health professions to increase shadowing, mentoring and research opportunities for prehealth students.

Minimum Qualifications
– A Master’s degree in the liberal arts or sciences is required.
3 to 5 years of experience in healthcare, higher education, or career development coaching is required.
– Knowledge and interest in the writing process; ability to evaluate and coach students’ writing from diverse educational backgrounds and with varied skill sets.
– Knowledge of the health professions.

Love to Sing? Vocal Ensemble Opportunities for Students, Faculty, and Staff

Augsburg University Music announces two unique vocal ensemble opportunities open to the Augsburg community.

For students, faculty, and staff:

The Augsburg/Twin Cities Global Harmony Project is open to students, staff, faculty, and community members. Available to students for course credit, this choir assumes no music-reading ability. The core of the curriculum is shared with our community cohort, open to anyone in the greater Metro area within driving distance of a weekly, joint rehearsal. This choir receives direct instruction from culture-bearers sharing their vocal harmony traditions from many continents. Our artist-instructors, teaching via the oral method, have taught us in regional styles from Appalachia, Bosnia, Corsica, Cuba, the Republic of Georgia, Iran, Madagascar, Nigeria, Quebec, Siberia, South Africa, Sweden, Ukraine, and the traditional Black gospel churches of the United States.

For students:

For singers with a firm base in music-literacy skills, the Augsburg/Mirandola Chamber Collective course brings students into weekly side-by-side study, rehearsal, and performance collaboration with the professional chamber artists of The Mirandola Ensemble. Students enrolled in this ensemble will also perform the international repertoire at the core of the Augsburg/Twin Cities Global Harmony Project.

STEM Peer Mentoring is a student-led mentoring program that focuses on providing support to First-years and Sophomores as they navigate their academic and professional careers in STEM.

Mentors in STEM Peer Mentoring can play a pivotal role in establishing the success of beginning STEM students. If you’re a rising Junior or Senior in a STEM major, enjoy being a leader and/or have lots of advice & resources to share — this is for you!! (Transfer students are also welcome!)

Students are matched according to their major and information they provide on the STEM Peer Mentoring Application (see link below!).

Friends of Roberts Bird Sanctuary is partnering with the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board to add an observation deck to the Roberts visitor shelter. We are raising funds this summer with the goal to complete construction after fall migration.

This observation deck will help make Roberts Bird Sanctuary more accessible to people of all abilities.

Thomas Sadler Roberts Bird Sanctuary is an undeveloped natural area in Lyndale Park near Lake Harriet in Minneapolis, MN, part of the Chain of Lakes Important Bird Area and located on the homelands of the Dakota people, the original stewards and inhabitants of this area.

Friends of Roberts Bird Sanctuary, an all-volunteer non-profit public charity, is seeking local artists to donate their tiny wildlife art inspired by the bird sanctuary for an upcoming online art auction. Proceeds from the auction will be used to construct a wooden deck adjacent to the visitors shelter. The new Roberts terrace will improve accessibility and provide a great spot for people of all ages and abilities to observe wildlife in the sanctuary.

Call for Art Details:
• Seeking 2-dimensional art; flat 3D work OK (i.e. mosaic)
• Medium: paintings, drawings, printmaking, collages, beadwork, etc. are welcome. Photography is ok if printed on a mini canvas.
• Dimensions: Must fit within 6″ x 10″ bubble mailer.
• Subject: Birds, mammals, plants, fungi, natural life, & landscapes found in Roberts Bird Sanctuary!

Phishing Simulation in August

As part of our cyber insurance requirements, we will be doing a phishing simulation for employees (faculty and staff) during the month of August. Since this is the first time we’ve done such a simulation in 10 years we wanted to let folks know it is coming.

Along with this phishing simulation (to be done twice a year) we will be doing cybersecurity education twice a year as well – both part of cyber insurance requirements. We have a new provider for cybersecurity education which has current and relevant content for higher education. These topics are useful in our personal lives as well as we need to protect our personal information too.

Funeral Service Information for Rev. Marlene Whiterabbit Helgemo

Dear faculty and staff,

It is with a heavy heart I write to share news of the passing of the Rev. Marlene Whiterabbit Helgemo, a member of the Augsburg University Board of Regents since 2016 and a longtime supporter of the university and our students. We will deeply miss her and the gifts of leadership and advocacy she brought to our community.

Marlene was a transformational leader in each of the communities blessed to count her as a member. I will forever be grateful for Marlene’s witness and for the joy she brought to the work of leadership and service.

She is survived by her spouse, Harvey; two daughters; and two grandchildren. Her funeral service will be at noon on Tuesday at Central Lutheran Church, 333 South 12th Street in Minneapolis, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations (checks) may be made in her honor to All Nations Indian Church, 1515 23rd Street East, Minneapolis, MN 55404 (Memo: Marlene). Marlene was truly an exemplar of service and stewardship, the kind we believe Auggies are called to emulate. I pray for her friends and family, for her congregation, and all those blessed to have been touched by her life.

My name is Ranen (he/him), a senior at Washington University. I am currently working my senior thesis about the intimate experiences of cis queer men of color. My research will contribute to a paper on the subject, which I’d be happy to share afterwards. Going forward, students who meet a certain GPA threshold will be immediately offered admission to Augsburg—in some cases, before they even apply. With less time spent reviewing applications, counselors will have more capacity to build relationships, learn about students’ experiences and goals, and personalize the admissions process. Students will face fewer barriers, allowing them to focus on finding the school where they authentically belong.

We want to emphasize that this change will not make Augsburg less selective. Students who receive direct admission would also have been admitted under our previous application process. What’s changing is our ability to reach students who might have thought college was out of reach. Instead of presenting the application process as a hurdle, we’ll start from a place of welcome.

Augsburg Applies 2U is the next step in a transformative process that has been underway for several years. Research shows that complex admissions processes are less equitable. Recent changes to simplify our application—including test-free admissions, short answer essays, and optional letter of recommendation—have accompanied Augsburg’s largest and most diverse first-year classes in history.

We are grateful for discussions and collaborations with so many campus partners and stakeholders as we worked to develop this new equity-minded model in earnest over the past year.
