I hope you’ll join me in welcoming Rachel Farris to the university and seminary communities. Rachel joins us from the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota and will be the new director of public relations and internal communication on the shared services marketing and communication team. She has extensive experience in communication within higher education and in other nonprofit settings, along with a deep commitment to the diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging work that is so important at both institutions. I am confident that she will become a trusted partner to our colleagues on both campuses.

Students – don’t forget about TutorMe! It is available to Augsburg students 24/7 and offers tutoring in over 300 subjects from qualified tutors. Students are able to use 3 hours a week; 3 one hour sessions or 6 thirty-minute sessions. You can access TutorMe through any of your Moodle classes. Spring semester credit refunds will be processed the first week of February, with checks being sent out on Friday the 4th! You can sign up for eRefund through Records and Registration to receive your credit refund via direct deposit.

Please verify that your mailing address is up to date. We cannot send a check to your campus box!

If your credit refund is the result of federal student loans, and you would like to reduce the amount of loans you are borrowing, please email studentfinances@augsburg.edu no later than February 1st. If you return loan funds after a credit refund has been issued, you will be responsible for paying the resulting balance on your student account.

The NASA Space Grant scholarship program supports the advancement of academically focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially space physics & engineering, mathematics, and science/mathematics education.

This competitive program awards up to 6 scholarships for Spring 2022 (totaling $8000), in the following areas:
Emerging Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior): Scholarships of $1000 to encourage students whose course of study shows progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.
Enhanced Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior): Scholarships of $2000 to support students who have shown considerable progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.

2022-2023 Multicultural Life Scholarship Application is open! This is a great opportunity for underrepresented undergraduate students in the Augsburg Day Program. Those who are eligible can be awarded between 2,500-5,000 annual, renewable awards.

If you are a current scholarship recipient and want to renew your award make sure to fill the application!

These scholarships include: ASIA Scholarship, Bonnie Wallace American Indian Scholarship, HOLA Scholarship, LQBTQIA+ Student Services Scholarship, M. Anita Gay Hawthorne Scholarship, and Scholastic Connection Scholarship.

We have multiple summer opportunities available for students.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM
The URGO Summer Research Program is an 11-week, on-campus program (May 12th – July 27th) where students are funded to conduct research with a faculty mentor. Students receive support throughout the research process from their faculty mentor, a Speaker Series, and weekly seminars with fellow researchers. URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $6,000 stipend and housing discount while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $3,000 stipend and a housing discount.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIPS
URGO also provides funding for students to work for a professor as a research assistant on an ongoing research project. This is a 100-hour commitment over the course of the summer and comes with a $1,500 stipend. This is an excellent opportunity to try out research for the first time or focus on a specific aspect of a research project.

Phase 1 of the applications are due February 16th at 11:59 PM, so start talking with your faculty members to learn about what research is going on in your department!

Apply to be in one of Augsburg’s three Public Leadership Scholar Programs: Christensen Scholars, Interfaith Scholars, or Sabo Scholars.
In these programs, you will have the opportunity to participate in a yearlong academic seminar with a cohort of your peers. You will contribute to public leadership on campus and in the wider community in faith-based non-profits, through interfaith engagement, or civic life. You will also be able to earn 4 upper division semester credits in the Religion or Political Science and receive at least a $2,000 scholarship.

Christensen and Interfaith Scholars – Current sophomores and juniors who plan to study on campus all of the 2022-23 academic year.

Augsburg Campus Ministries invites you to participate in its alternative spring break to Albuquerque, New Mexico, one of the oldest cities in the United States. Albuquerque has a unique multicultural history and heritage with Native American and Hispanic and Latino cultural influences. The city is located in north central New Mexico near the Sandia Mountains.
While in Albuquerque, we will be partnering with Service Learning Camps, and our days will be structured with community service projects, time for reflection, learning opportunities, and visiting local attractions.
Trip Details
Dates of Trip: March 12-19, 2022
Destination: Albuquerque, New Mexico
Transportation: Bus
Total Cost: $275, includes most lodging, transportation, and most meals. Please register by February 10, 2022 (see below). Please let us know if the cost presents a barrier to participation for you.

When is the training due?
-60 days after it is assigned (March 18 for employees that were invited this week)

I’m an adjunct/seasonal coach and haven’t received a training invitation yet. When will I be invited?
-Currently, training is only assigned to employees with an active position. Adjunct faculty and seasonal employees will receive training invitations within a week of the start of their appointments and have 60 days to complete the trainings.

Student Financial Services is excited to announce our newest Financial Aid Counselor! Jenna Kallestad has collaborated with Saint Olaf’s Business Office and Financial Aid Office to create learning opportunities and awareness to financial literacy. Jenna has built strong partnerships with faculty, staff, and benefactors to address financial aid needs and manage donor-funded/endowed scholarships at Wallin Education Parents and currently with at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota. Jenna will begin on Monday, January 24, and will oversee verifications and financial aid outreach.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM
The URGO Summer Research Program is an 11-week, on-campus program (May 12th – July 27th) where students are funded to conduct research with a faculty mentor. Students receive support throughout the research process from their faculty mentor, a Speaker Series, and weekly seminars with fellow researchers. URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $6,000 stipend and housing discount while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $3,000 stipend and a housing discount.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIPS
URGO also provides funding for students to work for a professor as a research assistant on an ongoing research project. This is a 100-hour commitment over the course of the summer and comes with a $1,500 stipend. This is an excellent opportunity to try out research for the first time or focus on a specific aspect of a research project.

Phase 1 of the applications are due February 16th at 11:59 PM, so start talking with your faculty members to learn about what research is going on in your department!

The NASA Space Grant scholarship program supports the advancement of academically focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially space physics & engineering, mathematics, and science/mathematics education.

This competitive program awards up to 6 scholarships for Spring 2022 (totaling $8000), in the following areas:
Emerging Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior): Scholarships of $1000 to encourage students whose course of study shows progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.
Enhanced Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior): Scholarships of $2000 to support students who have shown considerable progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.

Strong candidates for the grant will be students who…
are a sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, computer science, pre-engineering, or mathematics/science education;
can demonstrate strong academic performance and leadership within their major area; and
show an interest in contributing to NASA’s mission.

We have hosted the Minnesota Debate & Advocacy Workshop (MDAW) at Augsburg University for more than a decade. Last year, camps were held virtually. We’re back for 2022!

We are excited to invite your child to speech & debate camp at MDAW this summer- now with in-person and virtual options!

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions is happy to announce we have hired a new first year admission counselor to join our team! We ask the campus community to help welcome Mai Chaw Lee as our newest Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions (she joins the first year team along with Shonna Fulford, Josh Owens, and Summaiah Junaid).

Mai Chaw comes to us from TRIO/Upward Bound Program (where she served as an academic advisor working specifically with the Osseo and Robbinsdale schools). She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Asian Studies at the College of St. Benedict and her Masters in International Studies at Concordia University, Irvine (California). Her experience in secondary education, her energy, and her passion for working with first generation students will make her an asset to our team and to the larger Augsburg community. Mai Chaw’s first day will be Monday, January 24th!

In these programs, you will have the opportunity to participate in a yearlong academic seminar with a cohort of your peers. You will contribute to public leadership on campus and in the wider community in faith-based non-profits, through interfaith engagement, or civic life. 2022-2023 Multicultural Life Scholarship Application is open! This is a great opportunity for underrepresented undergraduate students in the Augsburg Day Program. Those who are eligible can be awarded between 2,500-5,000 annual, renewable awards.

If you are a current scholarship recipient and want to renew your award make sure to fill the application!

These scholarships include: ASIA Scholarship, Bonnie Wallace American Indian Scholarship, HOLA Scholarship, LQBTQIA+ Student Services Scholarship, M. Anita Gay Hawthorne Scholarship, and Scholastic Connection Scholarship.

The Minnesota Debate Teachers Association created the Tamar Kaplan Student of the Year Award to celebrate the life and personal qualities of Tamar Kaplan, including academic achievement, leadership, and involvement in debate.

Congratulations to Minneapolis South High School’s Clara Conry for earning the 2022 Tamar Kaplan Student of the Year Award!

Clara will earn a $1,500 scholarship and a plaque to recognize earning the award.

Clara was also a finalist at the MSHSL State Debate Tournament on the day the award was given.

Minneapolis South High School debaters, Clara Conry & Annabelle Niblett, finished their run at the MSHSL State Debate Tournament in the finals. On a 4-1 decision, Archan Sen & Eric Li from Eagan High School were declared the State Champions.

Clara & Annabelle won 7 previous rounds of competition to advance to finals.

The partnership of Ezra Gearhart & Molly Reehl, also from Minneapolis South, were Quarterfinalists.

Two Saint Paul teams also advanced to Quarterfinals: Chikamso Chijioke & Samuel Skinner from Como Park Senior High School, and Cayden Mayer & Maren Lien from Central High School.

We also want to acknowledge the debaters who qualified to compete at State at Sections, some of whom were unable to compete due to COVID-19 related reasons from Roseville, Roosevelt, St Paul, Como Park, Washburn, Central HS, and South.

It hasn’t been an easy season, but our students handled the challenges with flexibility and determination. This year’s topic was water resources, and we know they learned a lot. Please send your congratulations to these schools for their accomplishments at State!

We have multiple summer opportunities available for students.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM
The URGO Summer Research Program is an 11-week, on-campus program (May 12th – July 27th) where students are funded to conduct research with a faculty mentor. Students receive support throughout the research process from their faculty mentor, a Speaker Series, and weekly seminars with fellow researchers. URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $6,000 stipend and housing discount while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $3,000 stipend and a housing discount.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIPS
URGO also provides funding for students to work for a professor as a research assistant on an ongoing research project. This is a 100-hour commitment over the course of the summer and comes with a $1,500 stipend. This is an excellent opportunity to try out research for the first time or focus on a specific aspect of a research project.

Phase 1 of the applications are due February 16th at 11:59 PM, so start talking with your faculty members to learn about what research is going on in your department!

LearningWorks is a chapter within Breakthrough Collaborative which comprises 25 sites across the country. Its overall mission is to launch high potential middle school students on the path to college, while also inspiring talented high school and college students to pursue careers in education.

At LearningWorks, we achieve this mission by using a “students-teaching-students” model. During our 9 weeks of summer programming, 35 talented high school and college students work as teachers, advisors, and mentors for 120 middle school students from Minneapolis Public Schools. LearningWorks teachers are creative, diverse, intelligent, and highly motivated. They represent many academic and personal backgrounds, but share a commitment to students and educational equity. LearningWorks is a Breakthrough site in the heart of downtown Minneapolis.

Every summer, it offers:

We ask the campus community to help welcome Mai Chaw Lee as our newest Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions (she joins the first year team along with Shonna Fulford, Josh Owens, and Summaiah Junaid).

Mai Chaw comes to us from TRIO/Upward Bound Program (where she served as an academic advisor working specifically with the Osseo and Robbinsdale schools). She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Asian Studies at the College of St. Benedict and her Masters in International Studies at Concordia University, Irvine (California). Her experience in secondary education, her energy, and her passion for working with first generation students will make her an asset to our team and to the larger Augsburg community. Mai Chaw’s first day will be Monday, January 24th!

The NASA Space Grant scholarship program supports the advancement of academically focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially space physics & engineering, mathematics, and science/mathematics education.

This competitive program awards up to 6 scholarships for Spring 2022 (totaling $8000), in the following areas:
Emerging Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior): Scholarships of $1000 to encourage students whose course of study shows progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.
Enhanced Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior): Scholarships of $2000 to support students who have shown considerable progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.

2022-2023 Multicultural Life Scholarship Application is open! This is a great opportunity for underrepresented undergraduate students in the Augsburg Day Program. Those who are eligible can be awarded between 2,500-5,000 annual, renewable awards.

If you are a current scholarship recipient and want to renew your award make sure to fill the application!

These scholarships include: ASIA Scholarship, Bonnie Wallace American Indian Scholarship, HOLA Scholarship, LQBTQIA+ Student Services Scholarship, M. Anita Gay Hawthorne Scholarship, and Scholastic Connection Scholarship.

DACA and undocumented students are eligible and highly encouraged to apply. Promise, Presidential and ActSix Scholarship recipients and International Students (F-1 and J-1) are not eligible for this award.

Apply for a Summer Teaching Fellowship with LearningWorks!

A representative will be on-campus in the lobby of the Christensen Center on Wednesday, January 19th from 10:30-12:30

LearningWorks is a chapter within Breakthrough Collaborative which comprises 25 sites across the country. Its overall mission is to launch high potential middle school students on the path to college, while also inspiring talented high school and college students to pursue careers in education.

At LearningWorks, we achieve this mission by using a “students-teaching-students” model. During our 9 weeks of summer programming, 35 talented high school and college students work as teachers, advisors, and mentors for 120 middle school students from Minneapolis Public Schools. LearningWorks teachers are creative, diverse, intelligent, and highly motivated. They represent many academic and personal backgrounds, but share a commitment to students and educational equity. LearningWorks is a Breakthrough site in the heart of downtown Minneapolis.

Every summer, it offers:

· 100+ hours of professional development
· 65 hours of lead classroom teaching
· Autonomy to develop your own curriculum and course content
· Leadership opportunities in committee-structures and program planning
· Your own classroom for 6 intensive weeks
· Coaching and mentorship from experienced and licensed teachers
· Small classes of 8-12 students
· $2,500 stipend & housing options

Tom Kelsey has accepted the position of Registrar, effective immediately. Tom has extensive experience (over 2 decades!) in the registrar’s office at Augsburg University. He has played a key role in several important initiatives, including: developing graduation pathways, revamping National Student Clearinghouse reporting, and adapting student services during the COVID19 pandemic. Tom has also served as our Certifying Official for Veterans Administration benefits, managed the records retention plan, created the course schedule, and maintained the academic catalogs. 

As registrar, Tom will partner with others across the institution to improve the experience for our students from admission to graduation and beyond, with a focus on student success. Tom will report directly to Kelsey Richardson Blackwell, Senior Director of Advising and Registration. Katie Bishop and Marah Jacobson-Schulte will continue to oversee these recent transitions for the remainder of the academic year.

The heavily used COVID-19 Testing site at the Minneapolis Convention Center is being moved temporarily to U.S. Bank Stadium. The move is effective January 17-21. The site takes people with appointments and walk-ins. No new appointment slots are available for this week, but if you already have an appointment or are planning to get walk-in testing this week, please go to U.S. Bank Stadium, not to the convention center.

Testing will resume at the convention center on January 24.
