Let’s End Pink Tax

A collective of students has come together to create a proposal with the intent to install free menstrual product dispensers on campus. We feel it is essential to have access to free menstrual products on campus, as over half of the Augsburg community experiences a menstrual cycle, and not everyone has the necessary products on hand when they need them.

We are proposing to remove the current coin-operated dispensers in all restrooms and replace them with free product dispensers. Since most people don’t carry change on them, this provides an immediate barrier to accessing ‘essential’ bodily product needs. Given that many offices supply condoms and other birth control/STI preventatives – this inadvertently upholds patriarchal means of the “pink tax.”

The dispensers and products currently in use/disuse in Augsburg restrooms raise questions of sustainability as well as safety. The companies we have researched produce biodegradable products that are made of 100% organic cotton, no synthetics, rayon, or dyes.

Because we are committed to promoting trans inclusion on campus, we will be proposing the installment of dispensers in gender-neutral restrooms as well as women’s restrooms – knowing that menstruating isn’t just a ‘woman’s issue.’

Sophomores: Phillips Scholarship Pre-Application Now Open

The Phillips Scholars Program recognizes and rewards private college students who strive to make life better for those with unmet needs. Applicants are challenged to think creatively and become community-service leaders.

A preliminary application (linked below) is used to select two finalists from Augsburg University who will then develop a full proposal to be submitted to the Minnesota Private College Council for the scholarship. This will include a 5-7 page project proposal, official transcript, and 3 letters of recommendation. Staff members of the Sabo Center will help finalists complete their applications.

Applicants must be a sophomore during the 2019-2020 school year.

Each year, projects must fit within a theme. This year’s application theme is “Addressing the Achievement/Opportunity Gap in Minnesota.”

Scholarship recipients receive $6,000 during their junior year, a $4,000 stipend while completing a summer project, and $6,000 their senior year upon successful completion of their summer project.

Last year, 3 of the 5 Phillips Scholar recipients were Augsburg students, and many Augsburg students have received the scholarship in the past. “What Would You Do With $14,000?” – ADSG Long-term Project fund available

The Finance Committee have allocated $14,000 to be used for programs, projects, or any proposals/ideas that will impact students the most on campus.

These funds can be used by students and departments that directly work with students to benefit our Augsburg community.

Examples can range anywhere in the range of remodeling a section of a building space for ease of access for students and faculty, to wanting to add massage chairs to your favorite student space on campus. If you have a idea, a plan can be set in motion!

Thanksgiving A’viands Service Hours

With the Thanksgiving holiday approaching, We’d like to remind you of the days A’viands will be serving on campus.

ALL locations will close on Wednesday November 27 at 1:30. We will be closed on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The Commons will be open for dinner on Sunday at 4:30pm. All other locations will be closed on Sunday.

Monday, we resume service at the usual hours for all locations.

Confused about composting?

compostingEven though we’ve had these trash, recycling, and organics bins for a while, it’s still confusing, right? Here are some tips and tricks the Environmental Stewardship crew has learned that we’ve found useful in helping make decisions when we’re tossing waste:

1. Does it say the word “compostable” anywhere on it? It’s compostable! Hooray! Look on the bottom of cups and silverware. Plates will not say “compostable,” but as long as it doesn’t feel waxy, it’s compostable. [All catering supplies from A’Viands are compostable!] “Biodegradable” is NOT “Compostable.”

2. Was it recently a living thing? It’s probably compostable.

3. Is it filmy or flashy? Does it have two different textures on different sides? It’s probably trash. Things coated in plastic (shiny) cannot be separated into their individual materials to be recycled.

4. If in doubt – TRASH IT! Contaminated dumpsters actually cost us extra money and cause problems at the sorting facilities.

If you’re still confused – don’t worry. Most of us are! Consumer products change often and are not always designed with an easy end-of-life in mind. Reducing consumption can sometimes be easier than learning how to sort waste, but when we do have waste to sort, let’s help each other out! NOTE: The City of Minneapolis has detailed guides on what can go in each bin. If you’re googling to find out what to do with something, make sure you’re looking specifically at what Minneapolis or Hennepin County tells you to do with it. Not all municipalities have the same capacity to recycle.

Bottled Water Policy – Reminders

Since May 2017, Augsburg has been slowly implementing its Bottled Water Policy, beginning with eliminating bottled water from on-campus catering, no longer reimbursing purchases of bottled water, and removing bottled water from vending machines. At the same time, we’re working to increase access to water through filling stations and free water bottles in the Campus Cupboard.

As you’re planning for events, please remember that bottled water purchases are not allowed through expense reports, P-Cards, Staples, petty cash, and invoices.

New American Indian Student Services Director-Jamie Randall

Jamie Randall ’14, ’19 Master of Fine Arts, is the new Director of American Indian Student Services. Jamie is an Auggie having been an undergraduate and graduate student. Her master’s degree focused on Indigenous writers and representation in creative writing. Jamie comes to Augsburg from North Hennepin Community College where she was the Diversity and Equity Success Specialist. At NHCC, Jamie developed, implemented, and coordinated programs that engaged and empowered American Indian Students. Also, she served as the advisor to the Indigenous Student & Student of Color Advisory Board. Jamie is already making an impact in her first three weeks in her role. Today – EXPLO tabling – Summer Paid Opportunities

EXPLO — a world-wide leader in summer academic enrichment — is hiring staff members for our programs on the campuses of Wheaton College (Norton, MA), Sarah Lawrence College (Bronxville, NY), and a third campus to be announced soon. We are seeking highly motivated and creative individuals to teach and advise students entering grades 2 -12 for the summer of 2020 (June 22, 2020 – August 8, 2020). Our teaching staff works to inspire a younger generation of students through a curriculum of hands-on, project-based courses and electives in fields ranging from studio and performance arts to natural sciences, social sciences, math, and international development. In addition to teaching, EXPLO staff members live on campus and serve as mentors, activity leaders, and trip leaders.

Kelsey (Jim Trelstad-Porter’s daughter) will be on campus on Friday, November 22nd. Tabling in the Christensen Center lobby from 10:00-1:30 on Friday, November 22nd to chat with Kelsey Porter, EXPLO Faculty Recruitment Coordinator. Course Description:
Many U.S. citizens know little of Guatemala and the struggles its people face although it is a nation that continuously finds its fortunes bound to the interests and intent of the United States.

This course invites you to hear Guatemalan people’s views of their country, to explore past and present US involvement, and learn from those who lived through and survived the civil war spanning four decades (1960-1996), as well as a new generation of writers and artists–all who creatively and peacefully counteract the culture of fear through art and literature.
This 4-credit course is part of the spring 2020 enrollment. It can be taken as part of, or in addition to, your usual course load, and overload fees incurred by this study abroad program will be waived.

Program cost $3,825
includes: international airfare, all meals, all lodging, all program activities and in-country transportation. There is no additional tuition fee for full-time undergrad students.

We’re still looking for donations from student, staff and faculty. Due to several unusable/inappropriate donations, all donations must be dropped off at the Shop during open hours, and approved by a staff member. The items we are in need of are:

Campus Kitchen is proud to announce our partnership with Brightside Produce and aid in their mission to make healthy produce more accessible to food insecure neighborhoods. Starting next Tuesday, October 29, we will be launching our own Buyers Club branch here at Augsburg. This is a weekly produce subscription ranging from $3, $5, $10, & $20. Your subscription will help bring fresh produce to corner stores in the Cedar Riverside area. If you are interested in joining the buyers club please follow these step by step instructions to set up your subscription.

2.) Click the menu button in the top left corner of the screen and select “join the Buyers Club”.
3.) Follow the instructions on the buyers club page (subscription size, Augsburg pick up, items you prefer to be left out of your bags, and whether or not you would like to start a weekly subscription or make a one time purchase.)

Sophomores: Phillips Scholarship Pre-Application Now Open

The Phillips Scholars Program recognizes and rewards private college students who strive to make life better for those with unmet needs. Applicants are challenged to think creatively and become community-service leaders.

A preliminary application (linked below) is used to select two finalists from Augsburg University who will then develop a full proposal to be submitted to the Minnesota Private College Council for the scholarship. This will include a 5-7 page project proposal, official transcript, and 3 letters of recommendation. Staff members of the Sabo Center will help finalists complete their applications.

Applicants must be a sophomore during the 2019-2020 school year.

Each year, projects must fit within a theme. This year’s application theme is “Addressing the Achievement/Opportunity Gap in Minnesota.”

Scholarship recipients receive $6,000 during their junior year, a $4,000 stipend while completing a summer project, and $6,000 their senior year upon successful completion of their summer project.

Last year, 3 of the 5 Phillips Scholar recipients were Augsburg students, and many Augsburg students have received the scholarship in the past. “What Would You Do With $14,000?” – ADSG Long-term Project and Christensen Center funds available

The Finance Committee have allocated $14,000 to be used for programs, projects, or any proposals/ideas that will impact students the most on campus. There is also $10,000 allocated to develop the area of Christensen Center.

These funds can be used by students and departments that directly work with students to benefit our Augsburg community.

Examples can range anywhere in the range of remodeling a section of a building space for ease of access for students and faculty, to wanting to add massage chairs to your favorite student space on campus. If you have a idea, a plan can be set in motion!

If you are interested the committee will require you to set up a meeting to talk more about your suggestions or send ideas by email.

EXPLO — a world-wide leader in summer academic enrichment — is hiring staff members for our programs on the campuses of Wheaton College (Norton, MA), Sarah Lawrence College (Bronxville, NY), and a third campus to be announced soon. We are seeking highly motivated and creative individuals to teach and advise students entering grades 2 -12 for the summer of 2020 (June 22, 2020 – August 8, 2020). Our teaching staff works to inspire a younger generation of students through a curriculum of hands-on, project-based courses and electives in fields ranging from studio and performance arts to natural sciences, social sciences, math, and international development. In addition to teaching, EXPLO staff members live on campus and serve as mentors, activity leaders, and trip leaders.

Kelsey (Jim Trelstad-Porter’s daughter) will be on campus on Friday, November 22nd. Tabling in the Christensen Center lobby from 10:00-1:30 on Friday, November 22nd to chat with Kelsey Porter, EXPLO Faculty Recruitment Coordinator. Starting next Tuesday, October 29, we will be launching our own Buyers Club branch here at Augsburg. This is a weekly produce subscription ranging from $3, $5, $10, & $20. Your subscription will help bring fresh produce to corner stores in the Cedar Riverside area. If you are interested in joining the buyers club please follow these step by step instructions to set up your subscription.

1.) Go to https://brightsidempls.org
2.) Click the menu button in the top left corner of the screen and select “join the Buyers Club”.
3.) Follow the instructions on the buyers club page (subscription size, Augsburg pick up, items you prefer to be left out of your bags, and whether or not you would like to start a weekly subscription or make a one time purchase.)
4.) You will also have the option of purchasing a reusable tote bag from Brightside for your subscriptions, if you feel inclined to do so.
5.) Pick up will be from 11:00am to 5:00pm on Tuesdays, outside of the Sabo center, located in the basement of Anderson Hall.

EXPLO — a world-wide leader in summer academic enrichment — is hiring staff members for our programs on the campuses of Wheaton College (Norton, MA), Sarah Lawrence College (Bronxville, NY), and a third campus to be announced soon. We are seeking highly motivated and creative individuals to teach and advise students entering grades 2 -12 for the summer of 2020 (June 22, 2020 – August 8, 2020). Our teaching staff works to inspire a younger generation of students through a curriculum of hands-on, project-based courses and electives in fields ranging from studio and performance arts to natural sciences, social sciences, math, and international development. In addition to teaching, EXPLO staff members live on campus and serve as mentors, activity leaders, and trip leaders.

Kelsey (Jim Trelstad-Porter’s daughter) will be on campus on Friday, November 22nd. Tabling in the Christensen Center lobby from 10:00-1:30 on Friday, November 22nd to chat with Kelsey Porter, EXPLO Faculty Recruitment Coordinator. What’s Happening in CCV? A brown bag lunch conversation

Augsburg’s Christensen Center for Vocation is entering a new chapter, with a new vision for how this center can serve our students, the mission of our institution, and a growing network of faith-based community partners. We will be hosting two brown bag information lunches in the Augsburg Room on Nov. 20 and Nov. 26 from 12:00-1:00pm to share more about the direction CCV is heading.

Our center is deeply engaged with congregational contexts doing the work of vocational discernment centered on their neighbors and neighborhoods. In our new vision for CCV, these rich learning contexts can be combined with Augsburg’s unique approach to educating leaders who are informed citizens, thoughtful stewards, critical thinkers and responsible leaders. This will happen through a variety of initiatives, some new and some existing ones that are being re-imagined towards this more intentional vision. Our aim is to create mutually beneficial learning partnerships between students, faculty, ministry leaders, and congregations who share a commitment to being neighbor in real places with real people working to solve real world problems.

Course Description:
Many U.S. citizens know little of Guatemala and the struggles its people face although it is a nation that continuously finds its fortunes bound to the interests and intent of the United States.

This course invites you to hear Guatemalan people’s views of their country, to explore past and present US involvement, and learn from those who lived through and survived the civil war spanning four decades (1960-1996), as well as a new generation of writers and artists–all who creatively and peacefully counteract the culture of fear through art and literature.
This 4-credit course is part of the spring 2020 enrollment. It can be taken as part of, or in addition to, your usual course load, and overload fees incurred by this study abroad program will be waived.

Course Description:
Art of Resistance will immerse you in contemporary Palestinian culture and invite you to learn directly from a wide range of artists in the region. You will have the unique opportunity to experience art and performance first-hand in diverse Palestinian contexts, from a day-long excursion to cultural sites in Ramallah to a conference call with artists in Gaza. A major component of the course will be ongoing cultural exchange with students from Dar al-Kalima University in Bethlehem. Augsburg students will also learn about the complex political, historical, social, and religious context for Palestinian art and theater through guided tours, performances, gallery talks, museum visits, readings, and discussions. Throughout these experiences, students will interrogate what it means to create art under occupation, explore various definitions of the “art of resistance,” and learn tools to make creative work that defies and reimagines the status quo.

“What Would You Do With $14,000?” – ADSG Long-term Project and Christensen Center funds available

The Finance Committee have allocated $14,000 to be used for programs, projects, or any proposals/ideas that will impact students the most on campus. There is also $10,000 allocated to develop the area of Christensen Center.

These funds can be used by students and departments that directly work with students to benefit our Augsburg community.

Examples can range anywhere in the range of remodeling a section of a building space for ease of access for students and faculty, to wanting to add massage chairs to your favorite student space on campus. If you have a idea, a plan can be set in motion!

If you are interested the committee will require you to set up a meeting to talk more about your suggestions or send ideas by email.

The Share Shop is now open for students to rent out items! Located in the sublevel of Science hall (Not Hagfors), room 8. Our hours as of now are:

We have items ranging from bedding, games, kitchenware and appliances, and other household goods.

Additionally, we also have Augsburg gear to give away, which have been thoughtfully donated by the Bookstore.

We’re still looking for donations from student, staff and faculty. Due to several unusable/inappropriate donations, all donations must be dropped off at the Shop during open hours, and approved by a staff member. The items we are in need of are:

We are in the process of putting together a full day of activities, opportunities and fun for the entire Augsburg community. Holiday Shipping with Central Services

As the holidays are approaching you may want to send friends & family gifts or receive packages. Augsburg Central Services – Shipping & Receiving is here to help!
We can ship via UPS, FedEx and USPS and have discounted rates through UPS and FedEx. There are cut off dates to have packages arrive by Dec 24th which are detailed below.

If you are planning on receiving personal packages through the University we would ask that you be prompt in picking up your package from shipping/receiving as we have limited storage space.

These dates are all recommended dates to ship not guaranteed! The sooner you get mail/packages out the better.

“What Would You Do With $14,000?” – ADSG Long-term Project and Christensen Center funds available

The Finance Committee have allocated $14,000 to be used for programs, projects, or any proposals/ideas that will impact students the most on campus. There is also $10,000 allocated to develop the area of Christensen Center.

These funds can be used by students and departments that directly work with students to benefit our Augsburg community.

Examples can range anywhere in the range of remodeling a section of a building space for ease of access for students and faculty, to wanting to add massage chairs to your favorite student space on campus. If you have a idea, a plan can be set in motion!

If you are interested the committee will require you to set up a meeting to talk more about your suggestions or send ideas by email.

Each year, during Lavender Celebration, we honor and recognize LGBTQIA+ students, faculty, staff, and accomplices for their work in creating a more visible and just community for queer and trans+ folx. This year and coming years – LGBTQIA+ Student Services is looking to uplift more students by providing financial support through scholarship during the Lavender Celebration. Please help us raise funds to uplift and recognize the original work our LGBTQIA+ students are doing.

Campus Kitchen is collecting paper and plastic bag donations for the cupboard and produce distribution. It you or someone you know happens to have a lot of plastic/paper bags that they’re not using we would gladly take them off your hands. Feel free to drop off any donations at the cupboard itself located in the old science building (not Hagfors) room 8A during open hours:
Mon – 10am-Noon & 2pm-4pm
Tues – 1pm-4pm
Wed – 10:30am-noon
Thurs – 10am-Noon & 2pm-4pm

Campus Kitchen: Produce Every Monday

Campus Kitchen will continue produce distribution every Monday from 2:00pm-4:00pm in Christiansen lobby. We will be implementing a new rule this semester to insure that everyone has an opportunity to get produce. The first hour (2-3pm) will be reserved for students and the following hour will be open for everyone. Please bring your own bag if you are able. Thank you for your continued support

Student Share Shop Now Open

The Share Shop is now open for students to rent out items! Located in the sublevel of Science hall (Not Hagfors), room 8. Our hours as of now are:
Mondays: 10am-Noon, 2-4pm
Tuesdays: 1-4pm
Wednesdays: 10:30am-Noon

We have items ranging from bedding, games, kitchenware and appliances, and other household goods.

Additionally, we also have Augsburg gear to give away, which have been thoughtfully donated by the Bookstore.

We’re still looking for donations from student, staff and faculty. Due to several unusable/inappropriate donations, all donations must be dropped off at the Shop during open hours, and approved by a staff member. The items we are in need of are:
– First aid Kits/ Sewing kits
– Kitchen Appliances
– Clothing items
– XL Twin Bedding
– Water Bottles
– Tool Kits
– Poster putty/other dorm items

The Campus Cupboard offers free food for all Augsburg students. Located in Science Hall sublevel (Not Hagfors), room 8, fall semester hours are:

Interested in a weekly fresh produce subscription?

Hello everyone!

Campus Kitchen is proud to announce our partnership with Brightside Produce and aid in their mission to make healthy produce more accessible to food insecure neighborhoods. Starting next Tuesday, October 29, we will be launching our own Buyers Club branch here at Augsburg. This is a weekly produce subscription ranging from $3, $5, $10, & $20. Your subscription will help bring fresh produce to corner stores in the Cedar Riverside area. If you are interested in joining the buyers club please follow these step by step instructions to set up your subscription.

1.) Go to https://brightsidempls.org
2.) Click the menu button in the top left corner of the screen and select “join the Buyers Club”.
3.) Follow the instructions on the buyers club page (subscription size, Augsburg pick up, items you prefer to be left out of your bags, and whether or not you would like to start a weekly subscription or make a one time purchase.)
4.) You will also have the option of purchasing a reusable tote bag from Brightside for your subscriptions, if you feel inclined to do so.
5.) Pick up will be from 11:00am to 5:00pm on Tuesdays, outside of the Sabo center, located in the basement of Anderson Hall.

We appreciate your support in our program and mission to make healthy food more accessible in our neighborhoods.
