Attendees will also be able to offer academic and social support for our students who speak other languages.

The Writing Center is open!

The Augsburg Writing Center offers both online and in-person tutoring. Skilled students will work with you one-on-one at whatever stage of writing you are in – the idea-development stage, the drafting stage, and the revision stage – and can show you how to choose an appropriate essay topic, how to develop a thesis statement and paragraphs, how to revise your essay, or assist with any other writing needs you may have. Post-Sabbatical Presentation: Towards Developing a Slovenian Nationalism Scale
Presenter: Dr. Joseph Erickson, Professor, Education Department

Description: Europe has faced increased migration in recent decades due to wars (Syria,
Ukraine), climate change, and other reasons, as well as terrorist
attacks (e.g. Paris 2015), which have had a profound impact on attitudes
towards migrants, especially those coming from Muslim countries.

Research has shown that different aspects of national identity are associated
with attitudes and behaviours towards migrants and refugees. This
project focused on developing a questionnaire that would measure
different aspects of national identity and attitudes towards migrants in
the Slovene language. A follow up investigation is planned that will
translate the instrument into English and attempt to replicate the study
with an American sample.

Education Department professor Joseph Erickson will report on this project and
also share insights regarding the Fulbright Scholar application process
and potential collaborations available in Slovenia for Augsburg
University faculty through our partnership arrangement with the
University of Ljubljana.

The Boren Scholarship is an initiative by the US Federal Government to increase the study of languages critical to U.S. interests by individuals committed to public service careers. The Boren Scholarship can be used to cover a variety of study abroad experiences where language learning is the focus. URGO and Study Abroad provide joint advising on this program and can assist any applicant in selecting a program and writing/editing application essays.

Scholarship amounts:
Up to $25,000 for 25-52 weeks (preferred)
Up to $12,500 for 12-24 weeks
Up to $8,000 for 8-11 weeks (STEM majors only)

Hello Auggies! I am a graduate student seeking participants for a research study. I am exploring how one’s ability to recognize and regulate their own and others’ emotions may relate to feelings of depression and social disconnect. Participation in this study will involve completing a series of behavioral health inventories and a demographic screener that will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. These inventories will ask if you have experienced symptoms of depression or loneliness and ask how intensely you experience your everyday emotions. Following completion of these inventories, participants will complete a test online that will walk participants through a variety of different tasks, such as recognition of facial expressions and implied social meanings. This test will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. All participation in this study is done online from the comfort of your own home. Students are invited to participate in this study if you: (1) are between the ages of 18 and 31; (2) have not been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, or a personality disorder; (3) have not experienced an interpersonally traumatic life event (i.e., assault by another human being); and (4) are not currently experiencing a major health concern (i.e., life threatening illness/injury or significant transplant/removal surgery).

For your time, participants will be entered into a random lottery drawing for one of three $100 Amazon gift cards!

Is it time to move your intermediate Spanish-speaking skills to a higher level? Are you looking for another course to add into your schedule? The Languages and Cross-Cultural Studies department invites you to consider taking Spa 212 for the Spring semester. Continuing your Spanish study is a powerful way to enhance your resume and make you a more viable job candidate in a market that is looking for global competence and multilingual skills.

SPA 212 is Intermediate Spanish, a 2nd yr. language course designed to continue building language skills while exploring cultures of the Spanish-speaking world and is intended for students who’ve completed Spanish 211 or the equivalent. Spa 212 meets on campus this spring: MWF 12:30-1:40. Students, faculty and staff are invited to register. Please spread the word to your Augsburg friends!

The Boren Scholarship can be used to cover a variety of study abroad experiences where language learning is the focus. URGO and Study Abroad provide joint advising on this program and can assist any applicant in selecting a program and writing/editing application essays.

The Call for Proposals is currently open for the National Higher Education Teaching Conference (NHETC), set to take place in Minneapolis, MN, on June 13-14, 2024.

The 2024 NHETC will focus on three interconnected themes aimed at accelerating the student success movement in higher education:

1. Growing the Great Teaching Movement in the Classroom
2. Growing the Great Teaching Movement Campus-Wide
3. Growing the Great Teaching Movement across Higher Education

You can reference a list of suggested topics from the NHETC Programming Committee, though out-of-the-box thinking and innovative ideas that align with the overarching themes are also welcome and encouraged. Diverse perspectives and creative approaches are essential to driving meaningful change in higher education.

This is a unique opportunity to share your expertise, research, and experiences with a community of educators and thought leaders committed to enhancing teaching and learning in higher education. Your contribution can make a significant impact and help shape the future of student success within higher education.

Skilled students will work with you one-on-one at whatever stage of writing you are in – the idea-development stage, the drafting stage, and the revision stage – and can show you how to choose an appropriate essay topic, how to develop a thesis statement and paragraphs, how to revise your essay, or assist with any other writing needs you may have. URGO has a very limited amount if travel funding to award this academic year. URGO offers up to $850 in travel funding for Augsburg undergraduates who have been accepted to present research at a professional conference. These funds can mitigate the high costs of travel such as airfare and lodging, and can contribute to students’ professionalization.
The application is available at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) at the “conference travel” page. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so students are encouraged to work with their research mentor to submit a travel application as soon as possible. The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly throughout the school year to make travel decisions.

URGO has very limited funding for academic-year research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. Students are paid $1,200 for 80 hours of research. Research must be completed by May 20th. Student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals as soon as possible as the funds will be awarded on a rolling basis.

The URGO Advisory Committee will review proposals every other Thursday. Their next meeting is Thursday, November 2nd. Proposals need to be submitted by noon on Wednesday the 1st in order to be considered.

MCAT Test Prep Scholarship Application

Spend 8-10 weeks next summer learning one of thirteen languages at an intensive study abroad! The Critical Language Scholarship Program seeks participants from a variety of fields, backgrounds, and career paths essential to America’s engagement with the world. Most programs do not require experience studying the selected language and are designed to promote rapid language gains and intercultural fluency.

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is
– A fully-funded 8-10 week language and cultural immersion program
– Students receive academic credit issued through Bryn Mawr College
– Part of a US State Department initiative to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering foreign languages critical to national security and economic prosperity
– There are 13 languages that applicants can select from. Alumni of the program also receive up to three years of non-competitive eligibility (NCE) status when applying for federal government jobs

Competitive applicants will need
– To illustrate a commitment to language learning,
– A strong academic record and potential to succeed in a rigorous academic setting
– Ability to adapt to an intensive program and challenging cultural environment.
– Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

Critical Language Scholarship Program Website

Critical Language Scholarship Spark participants will spend approximately 8 weeks during the summer learning either Arabic, Russian, or Chinese through online classes and activities facilitated by native speakers. Must be a beginning level learner with no classroom experience. This is a virtual initiative for undergraduate students to learn essential languages for America’s engagement with the world.

– 10 hours of intense live group instruction a week
– Cultural activities and individual consultations
– Monthly professional development workshops and inclusive support

Participants of CLS Spark will receive:
– Language instruction and cultural programming
– Textbooks and language learning materials
– Language gains certified using the widely-recognized ACTFL OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview) assessment
– Non-competitive eligibility for U.S. government employment for up to three -years after the program completion;
– Academic credit issued through Bryn Mawr College; and
– A stipend towards equipment and connectivity costs (for example, a web camera or microphone)

MCAT Test Prep Scholarship Application

Critical Language Scholarship Spark participants will spend approximately 8 weeks during the summer learning either Arabic, Russian, or Chinese through online classes and activities facilitated by native speakers. Must be a beginning level learner with no classroom experience. This is a virtual initiative for undergraduate students to learn essential languages for America’s engagement with the world.

– 10 hours of intense live group instruction a week
– Cultural activities and individual consultations
– Monthly professional development workshops and inclusive support

Participants of CLS Spark will receive:
– Language instruction and cultural programming
– Textbooks and language learning materials
– Language gains certified using the widely-recognized ACTFL OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview) assessment
– Non-competitive eligibility for U.S. government employment for up to three -years after the program completion;
– Academic credit issued through Bryn Mawr College; and
– A stipend towards equipment and connectivity costs (for example, a web camera or microphone)

URGO has limited funding for academic-year research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. Students are paid $1,200 for 80 hours of research. Research must be completed by May 20th. Student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals as soon as possible as the funds will be awarded on a rolling basis.

The URGO Advisory Committee will review proposals every other Thursday. Their next meeting is Thursday, October 19th. Proposals need to be submitted by noon on Wednesday the 18th in order to be considered.
