Critical Language Scholarship Spark participants will spend approximately 8 weeks during the summer learning either Arabic, Russian, or Chinese through online classes and activities facilitated by native speakers. Must be a beginning level learner with no classroom experience. This is a virtual initiative for undergraduate students to learn essential languages for America’s engagement with the world.

– 10 hours of intense live group instruction a week
– Cultural activities and individual consultations
– Monthly professional development workshops and inclusive support

Participants of CLS Spark will receive:
– Language instruction and cultural programming
– Textbooks and language learning materials
– Language gains certified using the widely-recognized ACTFL OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview) assessment
– Non-competitive eligibility for U.S. government employment for up to three -years after the program completion;
– Academic credit issued through Bryn Mawr College; and
– A stipend towards equipment and connectivity costs (for example, a web camera or microphone)

The Critical Language Scholarship Program seeks participants from a variety of fields, backgrounds, and career paths essential to America’s engagement with the world. Most programs do not require experience studying the selected language and are designed to promote rapid language gains and intercultural fluency.

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is
– A fully-funded 8-10 week language and cultural immersion program
– Students receive academic credit issued through Bryn Mawr College
– Part of a US State Department initiative to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering foreign languages critical to national security and economic prosperity
– There are 14 languages that applicants can select from. Alumni of the program also receive up to three years of non-competitive eligibility (NCE) status when applying for federal government jobs

Competitive applicants will need
– To illustrate a commitment to language learning,
– A strong academic record and potential to succeed in a rigorous academic setting
– Ability to adapt to an intensive program and challenging cultural environment.
– Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

URGO Academic Year Research Funds

URGO has limited funding for academic-year research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. Students are paid $1,200 for 80 hours of research. Research must be completed by May 20th. Student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals as soon as possible as the funds will be awarded on a rolling basis.

The URGO Advisory Committee will review proposals every other Thursday. Their next meeting is Thursday, October 5th. Proposals need to be submitted by noon on Wednesday the 4th in order to be considered.

URGO Academic Year Research Application 2023-2024

URGO Offering Travel Grants for Student Researchers

URGO has a limited amount if travel funding to award this academic year. URGO offers up to $850 in travel funding for Augsburg undergraduates who have been accepted to present research at a professional conference. These funds can mitigate the high costs of travel such as airfare and lodging, and can contribute to students’ professionalization.
The application is available at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) at the “conference travel” page. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so students are encouraged to work with their research mentor to submit a travel application as soon as possible. The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly throughout the school year to make travel decisions.

Paid Summer Program to Study Public Policy and International Affairs

The purpose of the Junior Summer Institute (JSI) Fellowship is to prepare students to obtain a Master’s or joint degree, in public policy, public administration, international affairs, or a related field. Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Junior Summer Institute is an intensive seven-week summer program that focuses on preparing students for careers as policy professionals, public administrators and other leadership roles in public service. The program was started to address the lack of diversity across the spectrum of professional public service, including government, nonprofits, public policy institutions, and international organizations.

Selected participants spend the summer at one of seven participating universities (University of Minnesota, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, Princeton, Harvard, University of Washington, or University of Michigan) where they take courses, learn from top leaders in the field and build their professional skills. Students must have junior or senior status and be planning to graduate between December 2024 and August 2025. There is no cost to attend and participants receive a stipend.

The Scaffolding Writing for Student Success Workshop originally scheduled for today will be rescheduled for Tuesday, November 14 , 2023, 3:40 -5:00 pm.

Session Description: Do you include writing assignments in your course? Do you have questions and/or need support? During this session, we will share information about how best to build your instruction for students to succeed in creating written assignments for your course. We will discuss creating an assignment sheet, planning brainstorming and drafting activities, and organizing a peer review session. We will also have time to discuss general needs and concerns instructors may have when teaching writing in their courses.

The program was started to address the lack of diversity across the spectrum of professional public service, including government, nonprofits, public policy institutions, and international organizations.

Research must be completed by May 20th. Student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals as soon as possible as the funds will be awarded on a rolling basis.

The URGO Advisory Committee will review proposals every other Thursday. Their next meeting is Thursday, October 5th. Proposals need to be submitted by noon on Wednesday the 4th in order to be considered.

Creating a multimedia discussion forum
To increase engagement and variety in your Moodle discussion forums, consider directing students to use the audio and video recording tools built into Moodle’s text editor. There are no settings that need to be changed, as this audio/video recording option is automatically available to you and your students in any forum. Giving audio/video feedback to students
In Moodle activities, such as forums and assignments, you may choose to provide audio/video feedback to your students, instead of text feedback. Students have reported more positive reactions to audio/video feedback, compared to text feedback, because your voice as the teacher helps them feel your presence, and your care for them and their success in your course. In any activity in Moodle, in the text editor window, you may use the audio/video recording tools, mentioned above, to give feedback to your students. This can both increase your connections to students and save you time!

Due Tomorrow! Applications for Augsburg’s Mayo Innovations Scholar Program are now available on the URGO website! This program is highly competitive and is primarily designed for juniors and seniors.

What is MISP?
In the process of conducting research, Mayo Clinic scientists have developed new products that may be marketable. These products are submitted to the Mayo Clinic Office of Intellectual Property (OIP) for a thorough investigation of marketability. The OIP has a significant backlog of products to be investigated. One of the backlogged products or inventions is assigned to each MISP team for investigative research and formal presentation at Mayo Clinic.

Augsburg’s team will consist of an MBA student, 2-3 undergraduate science students, 1-2 undergraduate business/economics student, 2 Augsburg faculty, and a Licensing Manager from the Mayo Clinic OIP. The team will work together to understand the science and applications of the project or innovation and analyze the market potential. Each undergraduate student on the team will receive $1,500. Teams will begin work during October and the final presentations will be in March.

URGO Academic Year Research Funds

URGO has limited funding for academic-year research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. Students are paid $1,200 for 80 hours of research. Research must be completed by May 20th. Student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals as soon as possible as the funds will be awarded on a rolling basis.

The URGO Advisory Committee will review proposals every other Thursday. Their next meeting is Thursday, October 5th. Proposals need to be submitted by noon on Wednesday the 4th in order to be considered.

Paid Summer Program to Study Public Policy and International Affairs

The purpose of the Junior Summer Institute (JSI) Fellowship is to prepare students to obtain a Master’s or joint degree, in public policy, public administration, international affairs, or a related field. Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Junior Summer Institute is an intensive seven-week summer program that focuses on preparing students for careers as policy professionals, public administrators and other leadership roles in public service. The program was started to address the lack of diversity across the spectrum of professional public service, including government, nonprofits, public policy institutions, and international organizations.

Selected participants spend the summer at one of seven participating universities (University of Minnesota, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, Princeton, Harvard, University of Washington, or University of Michigan) where they take courses, learn from top leaders in the field and build their professional skills. Students must have junior or senior status and be planning to graduate between December 2024 and August 2025. There is no cost to attend and participants receive a stipend.

What is MISP?
In the process of conducting research, Mayo Clinic scientists have developed new products that may be marketable. These products are submitted to the Mayo Clinic Office of Intellectual Property (OIP) for a thorough investigation of marketability. The OIP has a significant backlog of products to be investigated. One of the backlogged products or inventions is assigned to each MISP team for investigative research and formal presentation at Mayo Clinic.

Augsburg’s team will consist of an MBA student, 2-3 undergraduate science students, 1-2 undergraduate business/economics student, 2 Augsburg faculty, and a Licensing Manager from the Mayo Clinic OIP. Free Speech at a Crossroads Symposium 9/18 to 9/20

Free Speech at a Crossroads: A Minnesota Dialogue, Monday-Wednesday, September 18-20, 2023. The Free Speech Project at Georgetown University and the Knight Foundation are hosting a Symposium on Academic Freedom and Freedom of Expression (flyer attached), titled Free Speech at a Crossroads: A Minnesota Dialogue, being held at Hamline University next week. The symposium is free and open to the public. Registration is encouraged but not required.

The impetus for holding the symposium here in the Twin Cities was the complex set of academic freedom issues raised at Hamline last year around a class that showed an image of the Prophet Mohamed; an Iranian artist’s exhibit at Macalester displaying images of Iranian women in sexually provocative clothing, and the events here Augsburg several years ago concerning the use of racist epithets in class discussions of American racial history several years ago.

Paid Summer Program to Study Public Policy and International Affairs

The purpose of the Junior Summer Institute (JSI) Fellowship is to prepare students to obtain a Master’s or joint degree, in public policy, public administration, international affairs, or a related field. Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Junior Summer Institute is an intensive seven-week summer program that focuses on preparing students for careers as policy professionals, public administrators and other leadership roles in public service. The program was started to address the lack of diversity across the spectrum of professional public service, including government, nonprofits, public policy institutions, and international organizations.

Selected participants spend the summer at one of seven participating universities (University of Minnesota, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, Princeton, Harvard, University of Washington, or University of Michigan) where they take courses, learn from top leaders in the field and build their professional skills. Students must have junior or senior status and be planning to graduate between December 2024 and August 2025. There is no cost to attend and participants receive a stipend.

It is important that your syllabus is reflected in your gradebook so that students have a clear understanding of expectations and grading. The following are some suggestions for syllabus/gradebook alignment.

– Use the Augsburg University Syllabus Template as a model. You will find this template located in “Faculty Moodle Resources” under the “Faculty/Staff Help” tab. This template includes important university policies and an example of how your syllabus shows the percentage of points assigned to each graded item.

– The default gradebook setup is “Natural” (points-defined assessment with or without weights). Here is the recommended gradebook set up and how to add an activity like a Moodle Assignment, Forum, Quiz, or Attendance activity.

Applications for Augsburg’s Mayo Innovations Scholar Program are now available on the URGO website! This program is highly competitive and is primarily designed for juniors and seniors.

What is MISP?
In the process of conducting research, Mayo Clinic scientists have developed new products that may be marketable. These products are submitted to the Mayo Clinic Office of Intellectual Property (OIP) for a thorough investigation of marketability. The OIP has a significant backlog of products to be investigated. One of the backlogged products or inventions is assigned to each MISP team for investigative research and formal presentation at Mayo Clinic.

Augsburg’s team will consist of an MBA student, 2-3 undergraduate science students, 1-2 undergraduate business/economics student, 2 Augsburg faculty, and a Licensing Manager from the Mayo Clinic OIP. The team will work together to understand the science and applications of the project or innovation and analyze the market potential. Each undergraduate student on the team will receive $1,500. Teams will begin work during October and the final presentations will be in March.
