GEER Grant Technology Still Available for Checkout at the Library for Students and Faculty

In the fall of 2020 Augsburg received a grant from the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief Fund (GEER) to provide technology resources to students and faculty in need with a particular focus on “students and faculty who are indigenous or people of color; low-income; or disabled. A broader target population is all students and faculty at Augsburg University.”

Students can just come to the library and check out the items as priority has already been given to the grant focus population.

Faculty we ask to fill out this request form to aid the grant reporting though it is not required. The items are available for walk-up check out. (only aggregate data will be included in grant reporting) https://forms.gle/N5m8gkGVSRiYenrf6

Free Trip to Holocaust Museum Through the MINNE Fellowship

The MINNE Holocaust Fellows program selects college students to participate in a fully-paid, one-day trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. to acquire a more in-depth knowledge of the Holocaust. Fellows tour the permanent exhibits and featured exhibits, as well as meet with a museum representative. Awards come through the MINNE Fund of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, who has chosen Augsburg to be one of the select universities to participate in the program.

The 2022 trip will take place on April 5, 2022. Applications are due on February 21, 2022 and can be found at https://jewishminneapolis.org/minne/. If you would like to learn more about the program or would like advising on the application, please contact the URGO office at urgo@augsburg.edu.

From the instructor, “In this course, the writer will develop a technique that is individual, yet grounded in fundamental dramatic writing skills. Students will read select plays by contemporary playwrights of color as inspiration and as a catalyst for their work. The class will analyze these plays to identify a variety of skills, themes, and concepts within four categories: Language as Identity, Intersection of Arts and Activism: The Playwright as Activist, Form, and Aesthetics, and Gender Narratives.”

We will present data from a recent survey of over 100 Augsburg faculty on the kinds of writing they assign and how they assess it. We will also discuss best practices for writing instruction based on recommendations by the International Network of Writing Across the Curriculum Programs and the Council of Writing Program Administrators, among others. We will then evaluate new ways of building upon our students’ developing writing skills in our own disciplines and programs.

To kick off Multicultural Life’s Monthly Dialogue Series, our Program Assistant, Jada Lewis, will be hosting our first workshop, “Colorism: The Daughter of Racism”! Through this workshop, we hope you will get the chance to dive into a topic that may be all too relatable in communities amongst BIPOC individuals. We will be exploring the meaning behind colorism and will learn from one another’s experiences as we work towards breaking down the root to this pressuring issue in our communities.

Developing Student Writing Skills in the Disciplines, Dec. 2 at 9 a.m.

Are you interested in helping students to achieve better writing skills in your courses or across your curriculum? Join Jennifer Forsthoefel (English) and Ben Denkinger (Psychology, Assessment) on Thursday, December 2nd at 9am for a live Zoom presentation and discussion on best practices in writing instruction across disciplines. We will present data from a recent survey of over 100 Augsburg faculty on the kinds of writing they assign and how they assess it. We will also discuss best practices for writing instruction based on recommendations by the International Network of Writing Across the Curriculum Programs and the Council of Writing Program Administrators, among others. We will then evaluate new ways of building upon our students’ developing writing skills in our own disciplines and programs.

The Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Summer Enrichment Program is a six-week summer program, held in Washington, DC, designed to provide undergraduate students with a deeper appreciation of current issues and trends in international affairs, a greater understanding of career opportunities in international affairs, and the enhanced knowledge and skills to pursue such careers. This program encourages the application of members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service, women, and those with financial need.

The Program has two major components: First, in order to enhance participants’ academic preparation to work in international affairs, the Program provides two courses and a seminar that focuses on enhancing knowledge and skills related to U.S. foreign policy, economics, and writing. In addition, in order to provide greater insight into the foreign policy-making process and international affairs careers, the Rangel Program introduces the participants to a wide range of government and non-government professionals who work on global issues and also arranges visits to various institutions involved in international affairs. The Program also helps students explore graduate school, scholarship, fellowship, internship, and professional options in international affairs.

Program Benefits:

The Program covers the costs for tuition, travel, housing, and two meals per day.

The Program provides a stipend for $3,300.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must be full-time undergraduate students, with at least sophomore status on the date of the application deadline.

Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale at the time of application.

Applicants must be a U.S. citizen.

Application deadline is February 15th, 2022
