The Mayo Clinic seeks applicants for its 2019 summer undergraduate research program in biomedical ethics. This program is highly competitive and 3-6 students will be selected. Each student will be placed with a faculty mentor for approximately 10 weeks. Students will participate in educational session on bioethics research and lunch meetings with faculty.

The Mayo Clinic seeks applicants for a one-year, 2019-2020 academic year, post-baccalaureate research experience in empirical biomedical ethics as part of the Mayo Clinic Graduate Research Employment Program (GREP). GREP is designed for individuals who plan to attend graduate or medical school and must receive their bachelor’s degree before the position starts.

Each year URGO offers $1,000 research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. These grants require 100 hours of research over the course of the academic year and are a great way to ease into research or to continue work on an existing project.

The application is available at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) at the “on-campus research” page. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals in the fall. The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly and will begin reviewing proposals September 10th.

URGO offers up to $850 in travel funding for Augsburg undergraduates who have been accepted to present research at a professional conference. These funds can mitigate the high costs of travel such as airfare and lodging, and can contribute to students’ professionalization.

The application is available at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) at the “conference travel” page. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so students are encouraged to work with their research mentor to submit a travel application as soon as possible after receiving acceptance to a conference. The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly throughout the school year and will begin reviewing applications September 10th.

PASTOR SONJA HAGANDER brings a deep passion for helping young adults explore Christian vocation and creating lives of faith and service. She has also led several interfaith initiatives at Augsburg, the ELCA’s most diverse college. In that context, she plans and leads worship each week in a challenging but very energizing urban multi-faith community. She has served as Pastor-Theologian at the Center of Theological Inquiry, Princeton University, and as Chaplain and emcee to the ELCA Youth Ministry Extravaganza Conference which hosts more than 1,000 pastors and youth leaders. She has been a contributor to “Word and World” and the ELCA e-zine for women, “BoldCafe.org.” She lives in the Twin Cities with her family. They love all things water: paddleboarding, skiing, canoeing, swimming, sailing, and kayaking. She most recently co-authored a book entitled, “Faith in Action: A Handbook for Activists, Advocates and Allies”, for Fortress Press.

URGO Academic-Year Research Application Available

Each year URGO offers $1,000 research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. These grants require 100 hours of research over the course of the academic year and are a great way to ease into research or to continue work on an existing project.

The application is available at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) at the “on-campus research” page. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals in the fall. The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly and will begin reviewing proposals September 10th.

URGO Conference Travel Grants Available for Student Researchers

URGO offers up to $850 in travel funding for Augsburg undergraduates who have been accepted to present research at a professional conference. These funds can mitigate the high costs of travel such as airfare and lodging, and can contribute to students’ professionalization.

The application is available at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) at the “conference travel” page. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so students are encouraged to work with their research mentor to submit a travel application as soon as possible after receiving acceptance to a conference. The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly throughout the school year and will begin reviewing applications September 10th.

About the speaker

Rahuldeep Gill, Ph.D., is a sought-after Speaker, Author, and Igniter for social change, whose life goal is to develop effective and heartful leaders with broad perspectives to drive innovations. Through his lectures and workshops he works to build pluralism and cross-cultural relations to inspire connected communities on campus, in the workplace, and in the marketplace.

He recently published his first book, Drinking from Love’s Cup, with Oxford University Press, and he is currently writing two more books about leadership and pluralism. He is a tenured professor and Campus Interfaith Strategist at California Lutheran University, and is the visiting professor of Sikh Studies at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California. He has twice been voted Cal Lutheran’s Diversity Professor of the Year and lives in Los Angeles with his family.

Decolonizing the Classroom

At this moment when racism and violence against communities of color is unapologetically visible, it is necessary to look at how academic institutions and our own practice may be perpetuating colonizing structures. This workshop on decolonizing pedagogies will feature shared vocabulary building, embodied practice, and small group discussions. Participants will leave with deepened understanding of colonial structures and how they manifest in our work in addition to strategies for decolonizing different aspects of our teaching.
Please join us on Tuesday, Oct 9th from 2:00-3:20 p.m. in the Studio Theatre in the Foss Building for what is sure to be a provocative discussion and workshop.

Based on over a year of analysis of research, pilot testing, and input from students and colleagues, this form is designed to measure student satisfaction with course experiences. It is not a form designed to measure teaching effectiveness or student learning; those purposes will be served through customized department and individual faculty data collection.
We are hoping to minimize any last minute changes from the floor to the form itself so please contact us with any questions or comments. We are happy to hear from you! There is one remaining group (of 3) listening sessions: October 4 from 10-11 in Cedar Room. We welcome questions and feedback prior to the faculty meeting. ¡ALMA! stands for “Augsburg Music in Latin America,” or more properly, “América Latina Música Augsburg.” We will be presenting a summary of last year’s international activities and a preview of what is being planned for the future including opportunities for student travel to Costa Rica, Peru, Colombia, and Bolivia, as well as for faculty exchanges and professional networking. Scaffolding Strategies for Integrative Learning Experiences – TODAY, 3:30 – 4:30 PM, OGC 100

How does one create a set of assignments that build upon one another and combine into a more in-depth and meaningful learning experience? In this session, James Vela-McConnell (Sociology) will share examples of integrated assignments in both lower and upper division courses TODAY from 3:30 to 4:30 PM in OGC 100. Participants will brainstorm ideas for scaffolding learning experiences within their own courses. Adjunct instructors on contract this semester who attend this event are eligible for a $50 stipend. We’ll also have this session available remotely via Zoom.

Interested in teaching an off-campus course abroad or domestically? Proposals are now being accepted for academic year 2019-2020. The deadline for Program Proposals is November 1st.

Faculty: Request a Study Abroad/Away Class Visit Today

As part of the University’s increased internationalization efforts, the Center for Global Education & Experience staff are visiting classes across campus to spread the word to your students about the many study, internship and research options available to them both abroad and off-campus around the US.

Can you spare 5-10 minutes in your class(es) in Fall semester for a message about study abroad/away programs? If so, please request a visit to your class online!

We can customize our message based on your course content, and on your majors’ needs and interests. We can address questions about scholarships, various length programs (some are better for WEC/AU students, STEM, Honors, athletes, etc) and other issues you might identify. And as always, we are happy to provide content to AugSem’s with a full class period on the topic of study abroad/away.

Where we Stand: Class Matters by bell hooks – CTL Diversity and Inclusion Book Group

The CTL fellows for Diversity and Inclusion would like to invite you to join our fall book group where we will read and discuss Where we Stand: Class matters by bell hooks. This text and our discussion of it will allow us to explore how issues of race, class, and gender are intertwined. This will be an opportunity for faculty and staff to understand how everyday interactions and social structures both reproduce and deny the class hierarchy.
There are 2 choices for discussion groups:
-Friday, November 2 from 12:30-1:30 or
-Thursday, November 8 from 3:40-4:40
Please email Mike Fetting (fettingm@augsburg.edu) to reserve your copy of the book by Friday, September 28 and arrange pick up. If you reserve a book, please be sure to attend at least one of the discussion sessions.

Decolonizing the Classroom

At this moment when racism and violence against communities of color is unapologetically visible, it is necessary to look at how academic institutions and our own practice may be perpetuating colonizing structures. This workshop on decolonizing pedagogies will feature shared vocabulary building, embodied practice, and small group discussions. Participants will leave with deepened understanding of colonial structures and how they manifest in our work in addition to strategies for decolonizing different aspects of our teaching.

Join us on Tuesday, Oct 9th 2:00-3:20 p.m. in the Studio Theatre in the Foss Building for what is sure to be a provocative discussion and workshop.

Gen Ed Redesign Listening Sessions

On Sept. 5 the General Education Design Team released its proposal, which sets forth a new vision for general education at Augsburg University. If approved by the faculty, it would begin to take effect in Fall 2020. A link to the proposal can be found below.

Listening sessions are scheduled for:

Tuesday, Sept. 25 — 3:40 to 4:40 pm in Lindell 301
Monday, Oct 8 — 12:30 to 1:40 pm in Hagfors 150A
Tuesday, Oct 16 — 10-11 am in the Marshall Room

All are welcome (students, staff, faculty.) We will listen to your concerns and and answer questions.

The Gen Ed Proposal
