The annual Nobel Peace Prize Forum is scheduled for mid September 2017. On Friday, 15 September all classes will be cancelled so that you and your students can attend the forum. Please know that you must officially register, although your tickets will be free. Over the summer consult the NPPF website for information to use in planning your curriculum to best integrate with the many exciting opportunities that will unfold over the 4 days of the forum.

Pre-Health Application Bootcamp

Pre-Health Application Bootcamp is a series of guided workshops where participants work on centralized applications to health professional programs, personal statements, and secondary applications. Bootcamp begins with a personal statement workshop on Wednesday, May 3, from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. in Sverdrup 205. The May 2017 Faculty Diversity and Inclusion Institute will concentrate on select foundational principles of creating more inclusive classrooms and interactions by focusing on improving communication and conflict resolution across cultures and by improving the success of all students through culturally responsive teaching across majors.

Notes
● The Institute will be divided into a morning session and an afternoon session.
● Breakfast and lunch will be provided.
● Institute will be led by a faculty/staff collaboration.
● There are only 36 spaces available for the institute, and participants must register by using the link below. (A waiting list will be instituted if registration surpasses 36 participants.)
● Participation in the Institute counts towards a Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program requirement.
● If you have attended the Intercultural Conflict Styles Workshop, some information during the Institute may be repeated.

All faculty and staff are invited to attend this year’s Creating an Inclusive Campus (CIC) workshop, entitled “Supporting Out Students in Turbulent Times: Civic Engagement and Nonviolent Philosophy in Higher Education.”

This half day workshop will engage participants in exploring the history, philosophy and skills needed to promote a deep commitment to civic engagement, democratic principles and pedagogy in the classroom and broader community.

Augsburg Summer GRE Prep Course

Augsburg College offers a four and a half week general GRE prep course each summer for Augsburg students, alumni, and staff at a cost well below those found at private test centers (due to limited capacity, this course is not available for those outside of the Augsburg network). Throughout the course students will have a chance to take two full-length practice tests, complete practice problems for each area of the test, and receive in-depth feedback and instruction.

Course Dates: May 17 to June 19
Course Time: Monday and Wednesdays from 5-7:30 p.m.
Course Cost: $100 (The registration fee includes instruction, a six-month subscription to the online GRE study tool, Magoosh, as well as the official ETS GRE test prep book

Study Abroad/Away is hiring.

Calling all study abroad returnees and international students. The Center for Global Education & Experience is hiring a new Peer Advisor to start this summer.

This is a key office support position supporting students who want to study abroad or study away in the US. Responsibilities in this position include: Peer Advising, library upkeep, office management, Event Promotion, Maintenance of online application system, and study abroad/away promotion through peer-to-peer outreach, class visits, tabling, and social media.

We can offer 15-35 hours per week this summer (depending on your schedule/needs) and/or starting in August. During the semesters, we offer 10 hours per week.

Paideia Courses Summer 2017

Looking for a summer class to take? Interested in improving your skills as a discussion participant and leader? The 28th annual Paideia Institute, July 24 – 28, 2017, will explore the question What makes a Citizen? This timely and timeless concept will be interrogated through seminar discussions on a variety of genres. Coaching activities will develop participants’ skill in facilitating democratic discussions in educational or professional settings.

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS: INS 255-A: Paideia Approach: Thinking, Talking, and Reading is a 4 credit course that includes the Paideia Institute, or EDC 498 Independent Study for 2 Credits. Register online through Records and Registration.

GRADUATE STUDENTS: ECS 543 can be taken for either 2 or 4 graduate semester credits and can be counted as an elective course in the MAE program. This course is not offered through the college Records and Registration site. Contact Rachel Lloyd at lloydr@augsburg.edu to register.

Augsburg College offers a four and a half week general GRE prep course each summer for Augsburg students, alumni, and staff at a cost well below those found at private test centers (due to limited capacity, this course is not available for those outside of the Augsburg network). Throughout the course students will have a chance to take two full-length practice tests, complete practice problems for each area of the test, and receive in-depth feedback and instruction.

Additional “All About Bias” Workshop Offered

An additional “All About Bias” workshop has been added in May!

“All About Bias” is a hybrid, group-format e-learning workshop that is a part of the Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program and provides an introduction to understanding and responding to unconscious bias in any workplace setting or interaction. Relevant to employees of all levels, participation in this workshop can positively impact all aspects of an organization. This workshop explores the hidden and pervasive nature of unconscious bias – how it works in the human brain, how it can impact workplace interactions and decisions, and how individuals can respond when they encounter it in themselves.

Jess established a tradition of allowing faculty and academic staff time away from campus to focus entirely on scholarship. There is no schedule for this retreat – it is simply time and space to work on scholarship. The Provost and the Center for Teaching and Learning will cover the cost of the retreat.

NEW Theology and Public Leadership Degree

The Religion department will be launching a new degree in Theology and Public Leadership in the fall of 2017. This degree program will be replacing the Youth and Family Ministry Degree. This new major will include concentrations in Youth Studies, Leadership and Management, Community Engagement, Worship and Music, Environmental Stewardship, Advocacy and Public Policy, Human Service, and Cross-Cultural Relations.

Adriane Brown receives grant for intercultural learning workshop in Spain

Congrats to Adriane Brown who received a $2000 grant to participate this June in “Learning while Leading: Supporting Intercultural Development through Study Away” workshop in Madrid, Spain through Augsburg CGEE Affilliate, CIEE.

This seminar is designed to help university faculty effectively integrate intercultural learning into teaching and advising. Participants learn how to help students learn and grow through intercultural experiences, whether they take place at home or abroad.

Adriane will incorporate learnings from this workshop into her upcoming Spring Semester/Winter-Break 2018 course and short-term study abroad program, WST/YST 220: From Harry Potter to #Brexit: Youth Culture and Social Change in the UK.

Speaking of Sabbaticals with Lars Christiansen – Monday, April 3

Sociology professor Lars Christiansen will present findings from his resent sabbatical research (and beyond), focusing on the relationship between theories of embodiment and urban design and planning. His talk will include comparisons of several U.S. cities and focus on transportation policy and practices. The title of the presentation is “Bodies in Motion: What the Embodiment Revolution Means for How We Get Around.”

Paideia Courses Summer 2017

Looking for a summer class to take? Interested in improving your skills as a discussion participant and leader? The 28th annual Paideia Institute, July 24 – 28, 2017, will explore the question What makes a Citizen? This timely and timeless concept will be interrogated through seminar discussions on a variety of genres. Coaching activities will develop participants’ skill in facilitating democratic discussions in educational or professional settings.

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS: INS 255-A: Paideia Approach: Thinking, Talking, and Reading is a 4 credit course that includes the Paideia Institute, or EDC 498 Independent Study for 2 Credits. Register online through Records and Registration.

GRADUATE STUDENTS: ECS 543 can be taken for either 2 or 4 graduate semester credits and can be counted as an elective course in the MAE program. This course is not offered through the college Records and Registration site. Contact Rachel Lloyd at lloydr@augsburg.edu to register.

In today’s challenging political climate, the skills of civil, civic- minded, and evidence-based democratic deliberation are a necessity. Paideia (pie-day-a) is a pedagogy that encourages inquiry-based, democratic discussions around a common text. It can be used with all ages and in all subject areas. The Augsburg College Paideia Program has offered training to the Augsburg community and teachers across the United States for the past twenty-eight years. We invite you to join us this summer.

Faculty are also encouraged to apply to the Center for Teaching and Learning Professional Travel Fund. Staff should speak with their supervisors about equivalent financial support from the College.

PAIDEIA INVITATIONAL: Don’t have five days available for the full Paideia Institute? Attend our one-day Paideia Invitational for a sampling of how teachers are engaging students in civil discourse. The invitational is Friday, July 28 from approximately 10 am to 2 pm. The agenda involves a morning seminar, lunch, and an afternoon breakout session.

Faculty, do you wish you had uninterrupted time to write / work on scholarship? If so, you will want to take advantage of the annual Jessica Nathanson Scholarly Writing Retreat. Jess established a tradition of allowing faculty and academic staff time away from campus to focus entirely on scholarship. There is no schedule for this retreat – it is simply time and space to work on scholarship. The Provost and the Center for Teaching and Learning will cover the cost of the retreat.

The retreat will take place Sunday, May 21 at 3 p.m. through Tuesday, May 23 at 1 p.m. (after lunch). Please e-mail ctl@augsburg.edu to reserve your space.

Considering Grad School? Register Now for On-Campus GRE Prep

Going to graduate school by the Fall of 2017 or 2018? Most masters and doctoral programs require the Graduate Records Examination (GRE) for admission. GRE Prep is offered this summer on campus through the Office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity. You’ll learn the most effective ways tackle the Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical Writing sections on the GRE.

The course meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 5-7:30 PM for four and a half weeks (May 17th – June 19th). The cost is only $100, which includes test prep materials; this is a fraction of the cost when compared to similar classroom GRE prep courses offered by Kaplan or the Princeton Review who charge over $1,000.

Alums and staff are also welcome to register.
