Announcing Augsburg’s new registrar: Marah Jacobson-Schulte

submitted by kaivola@augsburg.edu

Dear faculty and staff colleagues:

I am excited to announce that Marah Jacobson-Schulte will join us as Augsburg University’s new Registrar. In this role, she will lead and oversee the work of the Registrar’s Office, cultivate strong collaborative partnerships across the University, and serve as a member of the Academic Affairs Leadership Team, key committees, and the UC-Leadership Forum. As the University Registrar, she will report directly to me as provost. Her official start date will be June 27, 2018.

Marah comes to Augsburg having served most recently as registrar for The Sage Colleges in New York. Prior to this position she served for several years as the Director of Experiential Learning and Community Engagement at the College of St. Benedict/St. John’s University. She brings to the position deep leadership experience and a broad understanding of higher education, informed by years of hands-on engagement with students, faculty, and administration. She also brings experience in developing infrastructure, implementing innovative strategies, and cultivating strong partnerships across divisions. She received the bachelor of science in community psychology, the master of science in higher education administration and is completing the doctorate in higher education administration from St. Cloud State University.

I extend my deep gratitude to Tom Kelsey and Christine Berkenpas for their able leadership of the Registrar’s Office during this interim period. I am also grateful for the dedication and commitment of the Registrar’s search committee, chaired by Chief Student Success Officer Katie Bishop, for its good work in identifying highly qualified candidates in the search process.

Please join me in welcoming Marah when she arrives on campus in late June.

Propose a Workshop for the Overcoming Racism Conference

submitted by youngs@augsburg.edu

This year’s conference theme is a Call for Resilience, Resistance, and Hope: Overcoming Racism In Spite Of…
November 2-3, 2018 at Metropolitan State University in St. Paul

Propose a Workshop for the Overcoming Racism Conference

Proposals are invited for workshops/breakout sessions that address the conference theme and objectives above. They will be offered the afternoons of the conference in breakout sessions lasting 90 minutes each. We expect our workshop presenters to create participatory and reflective opportunities for participants to be actively engaged and stimulated.

We need concrete ideas for how to continue this work in spite of all that has come before and all that lies ahead. We need hope and inspiration to continue to confront and disrupt racism in our communities, our institutions and within ourselves. We seek workshop proposals that remind us of our past successes and how those lessons apply today and that hold up bold new visions of our youth leaders.

We seek workshops that speak to “In spite of …” challenges and how you or your organization is responding. What have you learned from past movements that you are using today? What are you doing to lift up new leaders and stay hopeful? What are you doing to stay healthy and energized in this current moment?

Proposals must be received by 5:00 pm on July 30th, 2018

Community Garden Update

submitted by greena@augsburg.edu

If you’re in or near the garden this week, you may see a big soil vacuum truck pulling out all the soil (who knew such a thing existed?!). Don’t worry, we didn’t actually plant this weekend, so they’re not getting rid of any new seedlings…. just replacing the existing soil so we can have good quality soil in place when we do actually start planting.

The garden will be green and thriving soon!

Survey for 2018-2019 Senior Show

submitted by johnso31@augsburg.edu

In short, my senior show is a requirement for my graphic design degree. My show will take form in a series of twenty short books that will each center around one of you that will be exhibited in the student gallery in Christensen Center that is now known as Gallery 720. The goal of my show is to provide a space where Augsburg community members can connect with one another without a breach of privacy. Each story will be anonymous.

I would greatly appreciate it if you could take 30 minutes out of your busy day to fill out this survey (https://goo.gl/forms/AzYGCozUsfeu8Xp23). As a sign of my gratitude, I will be selecting three of the responses that I find the most compelling, raw, and in depth and giving those respondents a $25 Amazon.com gift card. Again, I will not be putting names on the books so you can be completely honest. The winners will be emailed September 5th, so have your responses in by September 1st.

National Bike To Work Week: Know the Law

submitted by peterlin@augsburg.edu

Auggies, it’s National Bike to Work Week from May 14-18th. I am calling all faculty and staff, who are able, to ride your bike to work during the week of May 14-18!

Before you begin bicycling, or as a refresher, be prepared to share the road and know the laws regarding safe bicycling in Minnesota. It’s important to know these rules as a motorist, as well!

1. Bicyclists may ride on all Minnesota Roads, except where restricted.
2. Bicyclists should ride on the road, and must ride in the same direction as traffic.
3. Motorists must at all times maintain a three-foot clearance when passing a bicyclist.
4. Bicyclists must obey all traffic control signs and signals.
5. Motorists and bicyclists must yield the right-of-way to each other.
6. Bicyclists must signal their turns and should ride in a predictable manner.
7. Bicyclists must use headlight and rear reflectors when it is dark. To increase visibility, add a rear flashing light.
8. Bicyclists should always wear helmets.

For more information, visit: https://www.dot.state.mn.us/bike/education/index.html

Join me and fellow colleagues in cycling to work; post a picture and use hashtag #TakeARide2018 on your choice of social media as proof and inspiration to others. I encourage you all to promote group bike rides, repair sessions, and coordinate meet-ups to help spread the word during this week, and beyond.
