Hybrid All Hands Meeting Next Thursday

The final All Hands Meeting of the 2020-21 year will be Thursday, May 6 at 9 a.m. The meeting will be held as a hybrid event, both in Hoversten Chapel and via Zoom. While we normally hold a longer, strategy-focused All-Hands Planning Summit at the end of the year, we have decided to move our summit conversation to the fall and use this opportunity to report on the significant accomplishments of the 2020-21 academic year.

Faculty and staff can email events@augsburg.edu to reserve an in-person spot. Space will be limited; the maximum capacity of the chapel under current structured event guidelines is 58. STEM Peer Mentoring is a student-led mentoring program that focuses on providing support to First-years and Sophomores as they navigate their academic and professional careers in STEM.

Mentors in STEM Peer Mentoring can play a pivotal role in establishing the success of beginning STEM students. If you’re a rising Junior or Senior in a STEM major, enjoy being a leader and/or have lots of advice & resources to share — this is for you!! (Transfer students are also welcome!)
Augsburg’s STEM majors include:

Students are matched according to their major and information they provide on the STEM Peer Mentoring Application (see link below!).

Your experience could include teaching English, working on a Master’s degree, or performing research in any field, including performance studies and the creative arts. You may apply in the summer before/fall of your senior year or after you graduate. URGO offers advising, application support, and interviews for endorsement by Augsburg University for both current students and alumni.

Applications are Now Open For The 2021-22 AugSTEM Scholars Program

The AugSTEM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Funded by the National Science Foundation, AugSTEM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $10,000 per student per year. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Fall 2021 (graduating by December ‘23)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher (scholars will be expected to raise their GPA to 3.0 during program participation)
– U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)

Application deadline: Wednesday, May 19 at 11:59pm
Faculty reference deadline: Friday, May 28 (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application)

Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.

Baccalaureate and Interfaith Sending for Class of 2021

To honor the Augsburg Class of 2021 and mark the completion of their studies, Campus Ministry would like to offer two online services that would usually have been held on campus. The entire Augsburg community is invited to participate in these services.

The first is our Baccalaureate Service https://youtu.be/xAJYkbpYj3M, which is a festive service of music and word held for the graduating class, friends, and family members celebrating the completion of your studies at Augsburg and offering our blessings to you as you go out into the world. This is a Christian worship service, open to all. The online service this year is filled with joy and thanksgiving. Pastor Justin Lind-Ayres offers a blessing sermon for the class and the service features music performed by University Organist Mark Sedio, the Global Harmony choir, and student singers. Augsburg Mask Policy Remains the Same in Common Spaces and Outdoors

All students, staff, and faculty must wear face coverings in any common areas (anywhere outside of an individual office or residential unit) while on Augsburg property, even after being fully vaccinated. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz mandated, beginning on Saturday, July 25, 2020, that face coverings be worn in all public indoor spaces and indoor businesses as well as outdoors when physical distancing is not possible to maintain. “You will still need to follow guidance at your workplace,” according to the CDC guidelines for vaccinated people.

The Faculty Senate, Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) Committee, and the Classroom and Presentation Spaces Working Group have collaborated to bring you a short survey. The purpose is to identify faculty teaching experiences supported by technology, identify technology needs, and gather information about classroom needs as we continue to adapt to COVID-related changes.

The results will be used to inform future planning and will be shared with the survey sponsors, including Faculty Senate, and all faculty. The responses are confidential and all findings are reported in the aggregate. The survey will take about 10 minutes to complete and is due by Friday, May 1st.

Join Model UN in Chicago this Fall

Apply now to take the fall semester Model United Nations course, POL 368. Members of this class will participate in the American Model United Nations from November 20-23, 2021, held in Chicago, IL.

In this course, you will gain in-depth understanding of the United Nations and international diplomacy through the process of preparation for attending the conference in November. Students research a country and set of issues for the committee on which they will serve.

The fall 2021 Augsburg delegation will be representing the countries of Guatemala, Namibia and Sweden. In addition, a focus of the class will also be the study of indigenous peoples and their connection to the United Nations, with emphasis on Canadian First Nations.

The conference provides experiential learning that enables you to develop a better understanding of the inner workings of the UN, and a forum to hone skills in diplomacy, negotiation, critical thinking, compromise, public speaking, writing, and research. This opportunity is a great chance to put your learning into practice!

Priority Application deadline is May 1, 2021 to apply on the Study Abroad/Away site.

Prerequisite: students must complete the POL 160 course before Fall 2021, or have relevant equivalent academic experience.

Dianne Detloff’s retirement celebration is on Thursday, May 6th from 2:30 – 3:30 PM.
Come with your memories, stories, appreciation and good wishes for Dianne.

With more than twenty years of dedicated service, Dianne has worked as an Administrative Program Coordinator in the Center for Wellness and Counseling (CWC). She has welcomed thousands of students to CWC services. She provided leadership for annual CWC Health Fairs, provided leadership for the Augsburg student EPIC program, brought Paws for Learning to campus, organized blood donations with the Memorial Blood Center, arranged flu clinics, and has created a multitude of student programs and events.

The MN 5th Congressional District Office can advance a limited number of projects for the Community Project Funding appropriations bill. We’ve submitted a proposal for $175,000 to bring even more debate programming to Twin Cities students! This could be a game changer- but we can’t do it alone.

The LEAD (Leaders for Equity, Action & Democracy) Fellows Program focuses on student leadership development through off-campus, community-strengthening work in which they are working to address social issues such as education inequity, food insecurity, housing instability, etc. Students attend regular cohort meetings to reflect together on their work, cultivate critical analysis of the issues they’re working to address, and develop leadership skills.

In addition to being an active member of the leadership cohort, students will have access to paid internships both on and off campus in position that focus on social change work.

Counselors Needed for Scrubs Camp

Counselors are needed to work at Scrubs Camp at Augsburg from July 7 – July 9, 2021; 9:00AM – 4:00 PM daily. Counselors will earn $375 for the three day camp. Scrubs Camp is coordinated by HealthForce Minnesota and provides opportunities for high school students to explore health careers by engaging in interactive sessions led by health care professionals. Student Campus Box Closure/Survey

As we near the end of another year please don’t forget to take care of your campus mailbox. This includes checking it for any mail, returning your lock and filing out the digital survey for what you would like us to do with your mail after this semester.

Two weeks after the spring semester ends (May 16 2021) we will be closing all student campus boxes unless otherwise notified. Before the fall semester starts we will reassign campus boxes to all residential students. Commuter students can then request to have a campus box if they would like one.

If you would like your mail forwarded or would like to keep your mailbox open for the summer, please either fill out this survey ( https://forms.gle/7VW5CUfDmkzoHVTL6 ) or send us an email (mailship@augsburg.edu) with any relevant information. There is also an option to be keep your current campus box number for the next semester if you will be returning in the fall. If you do not fill out the survey, we will close your campus box and return to sender any mail in the box.

We are only able to forward 1st Class USPS mail and packages. Other packages (UPS, FedEx, Amazon, etc.), magazines, non-profit mail and standard mail will be returned to sender or recycled. We can also only forward to US addresses. The forwarding period for the Augsburg Mailroom is two months from when the request is submitted (July 16 2021). Afterward any additional mail we receive will be returned to sender.

We request that you contact the people/business sending you mail and update your address with them. Enrolling in online/electronic bills or statements can also be a smart option, it is environmentally friendly, secure and will often save you time (and sometimes money). Asking us to forward your mail does not change your mailing address with the USPS or the University, just the Mailroom.

The following proposals were approved by the AAC on Monday, April 26:

-A new Music Creativity Minor
-MUS 476: Instrumentation and Arranging was approved after not having been taught in a long time.
-MUS 413: Advanced Analysis was approved as a new course.
-COM 352: Persuasion was approved for the option of Hybrid/Online modalities and made prerequisite revisions.
-HMO 111/112: New Hmong language course sequence
-TEL had revised the policy for the approval process for courses seeking Hybrid/Online modality. The previous policy had been approved previously, but changes were made after further input.

The TEL subcommittee also presented it’s proposal to become a standing committee. This proposal had no opposition from AAC and will move forward to PPC.

SAVE THE DATES — Tuesday May 11, Wednesday May 12, and Thursday May 13 – for CTL’s 3 Days in May!

This year’s sessions will all be virtual (over Zoom) and many will focus on topics that were brought up as a result of the Student Assessment Survey sent out this past year. Each day will have sessions from 9-11am, Noon-1pm, and 2-4pm. Participants are encouraged to use breaks in the schedule for dept/division/group meetings (and as a Zoom break!). STEM Peer Mentoring is a student-led mentoring program that focuses on providing support to First-years and Sophomores as they navigate their academic and professional careers in STEM.

Mentors in STEM Peer Mentoring can play a pivotal role in establishing the success of beginning STEM students. If you’re a rising Junior or Senior in a STEM major, enjoy being a leader and/or have lots of advice & resources to share — this is for you!! (Transfer students are also welcome!)

Applications are Now Open for the 2021-22 AugSTEM Scholars Program

The AugSTEM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Funded by the National Science Foundation, AugSTEM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $10,000 per student per year. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Fall 2021 (graduating by December ‘23)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher (scholars will be expected to raise their GPA to 3.0 during program participation)
– U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)

Application deadline: Wednesday, May 19 at 11:59pm
Faculty reference deadline: Friday, May 28 (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application)

Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.

Updates from the Academic Affairs Committee

The following proposals were approved by the AAC on Monday, April 26:

-A new Music Creativity Minor
-MUS 476: Instrumentation and Arranging was approved after not having been taught in a long time.
-MUS 413: Advanced Analysis was approved as a new course.
-COM 352: Persuasion was approved for the option of Hybrid/Online modalities and made prerequisite revisions.
-HMO 111/112: New Hmong language course sequence
-TEL had revised the policy for the approval process for courses seeking Hybrid/Online modality. The previous policy had been approved previously, but changes were made after further input.

The TEL subcommittee also presented it’s proposal to become a standing committee. This proposal had no opposition from AAC and will move forward to PPC.

With the trend toward a more diverse workforce continuing, so are the ways we conduct business. In the past, most U.S. businesses functioned primarily within our borders. Today, globalization is proving to be a huge game changer for many companies, big and small. With globalization and increased immigration, the potential for misunderstandings in the workplace is really high. First, language differences may lead to miscommunication and misinterpretation. Second you fail to take into account significant cultural differences. For example, during a performance review, you provide constructive criticism to an employee with the intent of helping him improve his performance. Later on you learn that he quit his job because of the shame and loss of face your feedback caused. In this interactive Webinar, you will understand the impact of cultural differences in the workplace and learn strategies to bridge those differences effectively.

Counselors Needed for Scrubs Camp

Counselors are needed to work at Scrubs Camp at Augsburg from July 7 – July 9, 2021; 9:00AM – 4:00 PM daily. Counselors will earn $375 for the three day camp. Scrubs Camp is coordinated by HealthForce Minnesota and provides opportunities for high school students to explore health careers by engaging in interactive sessions led by health care professionals. The LEAD (Leaders for Equity, Action & Democracy) Fellows Program focuses on student leadership development through off-campus, community-strengthening work in which they are working to address social issues such as education inequity, food insecurity, housing instability, etc. Students attend regular cohort meetings to reflect together on their work, cultivate critical analysis of the issues they’re working to address, and develop leadership skills.

In addition to being an active member of the leadership cohort, students will have access to paid internships both on and off campus in position that focus on social change work.

“Creativity and Agency during COVID: Lessons from the River” Premiering Wednesday, April 28 at 3:10 pm

This EDTalk will feature a discussion of ways to use our time during the pandemic to develop new ways of “teaching by doing and by example.” Joe Underhill will talk about the evolving nature of the River Semester and the plans for new river boats as a way to engage students in a project that can be an example for them of how to get creative and maintain a sense of agency when we face so many daunting challenges.

This year, EDTalks will be pre-recorded and have a community “premiere” on Zoom hosted by CTL at 3:10 pm on days when there is a faculty meeting. These premieres will end no later than 3:30pm to allow plenty of time to log into the Faculty Zoom meeting early. After the premier, the recording will be posted on the CTL website, along with any resources (if applicable).

Faculty Survey: Response Deadline is May 1

The Faculty Senate, Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) Committee, and the Classroom and Presentation Spaces Working Group have collaborated to bring you a short survey. The purpose is to identify faculty teaching experiences supported by technology, identify technology needs, and gather information about classroom needs as we continue to adapt to COVID-related changes.

The results will be used to inform future planning and will be shared with the survey sponsors, including Faculty Senate, and all faculty. The responses are confidential and all findings are reported in the aggregate. The survey will take about 10 minutes to complete and is due by Friday, May 1st.

Dianne Detloff’s retirement celebration is on Thursday, May 6th from 2:30 – 3:30 PM.
Come with your memories, stories, appreciation and good wishes for Dianne.

With more than twenty years of dedicated service, Dianne has worked as the Administrative Program Coordinator in the Center for Wellness and Counseling (CWC). She has welcomed thousands of students seeking CWC services. In her position at CWC, she organized a multitude of wellbeing events, such as, the Annual CWC Health Fairs, blood drives with the Memorial Blood Center, and flu shot Clinics with Hennepin Health Care. Dianne provided the leadership for the Augsburg student EPIC program and was a mentor and supervisor for the students. Many students found meeting with the dogs from Paws for learning lowered their stress and would come to CWC or other locations on campus to be with the beloved dogs from Paws for Learning.

Minnesota Urban Debate League Hiring for AmeriCorps VISTA Role – Open Soon

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, is hiring an AmeriCorps VISTA member to build capacity for its Spanish Debate League and East African Debate programs. The role will begin in August 2021.

Our Community Debate Liaison will carry out these capacity-building activities:

– Serve as a liaison for our community-focused debate programs
– Establish and maintain relationships with Latinx-serving and East African-serving organizations, including with universities and corporate affinity groups
– Build volunteer pipelines for Spanish Debate League and East African Debate Initiative programs
– Conduct community surveys and interviews to be used for program improvement and fundraising
– Write powerful grant writing and fundraising appeals focused specifically on Spanish Debate & East African Debate opportunities
– Parent and family engagement of students within these programs

We are seeking organized individuals with strong communication skills and a passion for youth voice & education. Spanish, Somali, and/or Oromo language fluency a plus. Does this sound like you?

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, provides debate programming to middle and high school students in the Twin Cities. One of our programs is the Spanish Debate League, held entirely in Spanish. The debate topic for this all-virtual season is the impact of social media on society.

Are you fluent in Spanish? Join us for our first Spanish Debate League tournament this Thursday as a volunteer judge! No experience needed – we will train you.

Campus Box Closure/Survey

As we near the end of another year please don’t forget to take care of your campus mailbox. This includes checking it for any mail, returning your lock and filing out the digital survey for what you would like us to do with your mail after this semester.

Two weeks after the spring semester ends (May 16 2021) we will be closing all student campus boxes unless otherwise notified. Before the fall semester starts we will reassign campus boxes to all residential students. Commuter students can then request to have a campus box if they would like one.

If you would like your mail forwarded or would like to keep your mailbox open for the summer, please either fill out this survey ( https://forms.gle/7VW5CUfDmkzoHVTL6 ) or send us an email (mailship@augsburg.edu) with any relevant information. There is also an option to be keep your current campus box number for the next semester if you will be returning in the fall. If you do not fill out the survey, we will close your campus box and return to sender any mail in the box.

We are only able to forward 1st Class USPS mail and packages. Other packages (UPS, FedEx, Amazon, etc.), magazines, non-profit mail and standard mail will be returned to sender or recycled. We can also only forward to US addresses. The forwarding period for the Augsburg Mailroom is two months from when the request is submitted (July 16 2021). Afterward any additional mail we receive will be returned to sender.

We request that you contact the people/business sending you mail and update your address with them. Enrolling in online/electronic bills or statements can also be a smart option, it is environmentally friendly, secure and will often save you time (and sometimes money). Asking us to forward your mail does not change your mailing address with the USPS or the University, just the Mailroom.

Faculty Survey: Response Deadline is May 1

The Faculty Senate, Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) Committee, and the Classroom and Presentation Spaces Working Group have collaborated to bring you a short survey. The purpose is to identify faculty teaching experiences supported by technology, identify technology needs, and gather information about classroom needs as we continue to adapt to COVID-related changes.

The results will be used to inform future planning and will be shared with the survey sponsors, including Faculty Senate, and all faculty. The responses are confidential and all findings are reported in the aggregate. The survey will take about 10 minutes to complete and is due by Friday, May 1st.

Counselors Needed For Scrubs Camp

Counselors are needed to work at Scrubs Camp at Augsburg from July 7 – July 9, 2021; 9:00AM – 4:00 PM daily. Counselors will earn $375 for the three day camp. Scrubs Camp is coordinated by HealthForce Minnesota and provides opportunities for high school students to explore health careers by engaging in interactive sessions led by health care professionals. Teaching Tip Tuesday: “A Violent History of Benevolence”

As we seek to embrace anti-racism in the classroom, it is important to be familiar with past traumas that have been inflicted on people of color by members of the education and helping professions. “A Violent History of Benevolence: Interlocking Oppression in the Moral Economies of Social Working” is a book written by two Canadian scholars that chronicles the systematic racism used in the education and social work professions and the oppression particularly of Indigenous people and African Americans. This is important information not only for social workers but for all of us in higher education.

Join Model UN in Chicago this Fall

Apply now to take the fall semester Model United Nations course, POL 368. Members of this class will participate in the American Model United Nations from November 20-23, 2021, held in Chicago, IL.

In this course, you will gain in-depth understanding of the United Nations and international diplomacy through the process of preparation for attending the conference in November. Students research a country and set of issues for the committee on which they will serve.

The fall 2021 Augsburg delegation will be representing the countries of Guatemala, Namibia and Sweden. In addition, a focus of the class will also be the study of indigenous peoples and their connection to the United Nations, with emphasis on Canadian First Nations.

The conference provides experiential learning that enables you to develop a better understanding of the inner workings of the UN, and a forum to hone skills in diplomacy, negotiation, critical thinking, compromise, public speaking, writing, and research. This opportunity is a great chance to put your learning into practice!

Priority Application deadline is May 1, 2021 to apply on the Study Abroad/Away site.

Prerequisite: students must complete the POL 160 course before Fall 2021, or have relevant equivalent academic experience.

Religious diversity is an incredibly important part of American public life. Controversies regarding religion and business are regularly in both the press and the courts and more Americans say that they encounter religious diversity at work than in any other sphere of their life (PRRI, 2019). However, religion is often left out of the corporate diversity conversation. Diverse identities and perspectives on a team can lead to greater outcomes or can lead to misunderstanding and conflict. It is only when diverse identities are engaged, and team members have opportunities to intentionally learn about one another, that the potential strength of workplace diversity is unlocked. Developing a company culture that proactively engages religious diversity can open doors to greater employee productivity, enhanced client satisfaction, and even new business prospects. Minnesota Urban Debate League Hiring for AmeriCorps Vista Role – Open Soon.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, is hiring an AmeriCorps VISTA member to build capacity for its Spanish Debate League and East African Debate programs.  The role will begin in August 2021.

Our Community Debate Liaison will carry out these capacity-building activities:

– Serve as a liaison for our community-focused debate programs
– Establish and maintain relationships with Latinx-serving and East African-serving organizations, including with universities and corporate affinity groups
– Build volunteer pipelines for Spanish Debate League and East African Debate Initiative programs
– Conduct community surveys and interviews to be used for program improvement and fundraising
– Write powerful grant writing and fundraising appeals focused specifically on Spanish Debate & East African Debate opportunities
– Parent and family engagement of students within these programs

We are seeking organized individuals with strong communication skills and a passion for youth voice & education. Spanish, Somali, and/or Oromo language fluency a plus. Does this sound like you?

This EDTalk will feature a discussion of ways to use our time during the pandemic to develop new ways of “teaching by doing and by example.” Joe Underhill will talk about the evolving nature of the River Semester and the plans for new river boats as a way to engage students in a project that can be an example for them of how to get creative and maintain a sense of agency when we face so many daunting challenges.

These agencies are able to better understand the qualifications that candidates possess to help match them with an organization/position that’s a good fit for them. Hybrid All Hands Meeting on May 6

The final All Hands Meeting of the 2020-21 year will be Thursday, May 6 at 9 a.m. The meeting will be held as a hybrid event, both in Hoversten Chapel and via Zoom. While we normally hold a longer, strategy-focused All-Hands Planning Summit at the end of the year, we have decided to move our summit conversation to the fall and use this opportunity to report on the significant accomplishments of the 2020-21 academic year.

Student Campus Box Closure/Survey

As we near the end of another year please don’t forget to take care of your campus mailbox. This includes checking it for any mail, returning your lock and filing out the digital survey for what you would like us to do with your mail after this semester.

Two weeks after the spring semester ends (May 16 2021) we will be closing all student campus boxes unless otherwise notified. Before the fall semester starts we will reassign campus boxes to all residential students. Commuter students can then request to have a campus box if they would like one.

If you would like your mail forwarded or would like to keep your mailbox open for the summer, please either fill out this survey ( https://forms.gle/7VW5CUfDmkzoHVTL6 ) or send us an email (mailship@augsburg.edu) with any relevant information. There is also an option to be keep your current campus box number for the next semester if you will be returning in the fall. If you do not fill out the survey, we will close your campus box and return to sender any mail in the box.

We are only able to forward 1st Class USPS mail and packages. Other packages (UPS, FedEx, Amazon, etc.), magazines, non-profit mail and standard mail will be returned to sender or recycled. We can also only forward to US addresses. The forwarding period for the Augsburg Mailroom is two months from when the request is submitted (July 16 2021). Afterward any additional mail we receive will be returned to sender.

We request that you contact the people/business sending you mail and update your address with them. Enrolling in online/electronic bills or statements can also be a smart option, it is environmentally friendly, secure and will often save you time (and sometimes money). Asking us to forward your mail does not change your mailing address with the USPS or the University, just the Mailroom.

Hi! My name is Bella and I am a first year student here at Augsburg studying graphic design. I am currently trying to find personal care assistants to help me in my day to day life here on campus. This would include getting me ready for the day, helping me get set up for class and assisting me around campus. I am currently looking for people who would want to work starting May and some hours during this summer! Dianne Detloff’s retirement celebration is on Thursday, May 6th from 2:30 – 3:30 PM.
Come with your memories, stories, appreciation and good wishes for Dianne.

With more than twenty years of dedicated service, Dianne has worked as the Administrative Program Coordinator in the Center for Wellness and Counseling (CWC). She has welcomed thousands of students seeking CWC services. In her position at CWC, she organized a multitude of wellbeing events, such as, the Annual CWC Health Fairs, blood drives with the Memorial Blood Center, and flu shot Clinics with Hennepin Health Care. Dianne provided the leadership for the Augsburg student EPIC program and was a mentor and supervisor for the students. Many students found meeting with the dogs from Paws for learning lowered their stress and would come to CWC or other locations on campus to be with the beloved dogs from Paws for Learning.

Google Maps in Augsburg.edu Returns

You may have recently received an error message when trying to access Google Maps while logged into your Augsburg account. It appears that while it may have been previously available, Augsburg did not have Google Maps turned “On” as a non-core app available for Augsburg.edu accounts. A likely change by Google seems to have corrected what they would see as unintentional access. During our investigation, we have kept the service “Off.”

Now we’ve turned it “On.” This is a good time to remind you that Google Maps does not fall under our Education terms of service so the privacy protections are the same as the commercial Google tools. Our Core Apps (Gmail, Calendar, Drive) fall under an education terms of service that includes FERPA protections. In other words, non-core apps like Google Maps will collect data like the commercial Google products so be aware of that. And we recommend not requiring students to use any non-core apps for coursework since there aren’t FERPA protections.

Applications are Now Open for the 2021-22 AugSTEM Scholars Program

The AugSTEM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Funded by the National Science Foundation, AugSTEM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $10,000 per student per year. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Fall 2021 (graduating by December ‘23)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher (scholars will be expected to raise their GPA to 3.0 during program participation)
– U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)

Application deadline: Wednesday, May 19 at 11:59pm
Faculty reference deadline: Friday, May 28 (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application)

Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.
