The Augsburg Writing Center is offering online instruction for students taking summer courses. The Online Writing Center allows you to video conference with a tutor and receive one-on-one feedback on your writing from a peer tutor. We use a combination of Zoom (for the video conference) and Google Docs (for you to share your draft with the tutor). As is true during an in-person session, you and the tutor will have a collaborative conversation about your draft during the online meeting.
Appointments are available Tuesdays 6:00-7:30pm Wednesdays from 4:00-5:30pm. Augsburg University to home to many camps and conferences throughout the summer months. In an effort to keep our community up to date about our campus visitors, University Events will be posting weekly updates here!
This week, Minnesota Urban Debate league is continuing their residency here on campus. We are also welcoming Minnesota USA Wrestling Camp this Saturday. They will be on campus through Wednesday, July 10th.
Looking ahead to next week, Scrubs Camp will be starting their time on campus Monday, July 8th. We will also host the Place Based Justice Network Conference July 10th-12th.

Members of the Environmental Stewardship Committee and Campus Cupboard are coming together to create a Campus Share Shop for the students of Augsburg! Our purpose is to create a space where students can check out goods they need, rather than purchasing new items. By doing this, we hope to:
-Reduce the consumption of material goods
-Reduce students’ costs
-Create a community space where students can take part in informal learning around sustainable practices and skill-sharing.
This is a project created by students for students, so we are reaching out to you to find out what you would want to see in the share shop. Please take a few minutes to take a short survey that will aid in creating a share shop that will properly serve the students of Augsburg.

You are invited to participate in a research study on Predicting Maximal Oxygen Consumption with a Single Stage Auggie Skate Test. Research subjects are asked to be within 25-55 years old, healthy, active, moderately-fit male or female, and is a competent skater. You will be asked to complete a bruce protocol treadmill test to volitional fatigue and to return 48 hours later to complete a leisurely ice skating assessment. You will be compensated upon completion of each test with a $5 cash for a total of $10.

Lauren will oversee the implementation of accommodated testing, alternative text formats, and other classroom accommodations. She will also oversee our assistive technology accommodations and programs. Most recently, Lauren served as a senior IT operations analyst at the college of st. Catherine. She is also a licensed occupational therapist. We’re excited to have her on our team!

I am writing to share that Naomi Farabee, McNair Scholars Assistant Director, will be leaving Augsburg on June 7 as she has accepted a position as an Education Specialist, Curriculum & Assessment, Office of the Associate Deputy Director for Tribally Controlled Schools, Bureau of Indian Education. We are really excited for her in the new role of providing expert guidance on improving instruction by designing and modifying curriculum change and making recommendations for needed services.
The impact Naomi has made during her time at Augsburg has been significant as part of her responsibilities included being co-instructor of the McN301: Research in the Disciplines course. She has contributed to improving McNair curriculum and programming.
There will be no send-off for Naomi but please feel free to stop by the McNair office at Hagfors Center 101 or contact her before she leaves to wish her well on her new endeavor. Farabeen@augsburg.edu.

2003 Honda Accord EX-L for sale AS IS.
This 4-door sedan runs GREAT and has all-new brakes (October 2018) and a brand new steering column pump (March 2019). The interior is all leather, heated driver and passenger seats.
203,000 miles and going strong!
I am selling the car AS IS. The car has some body damage due to a recent run-in with a deer: the left headlight needs to be replaced, and the front hood is indented and needs to be fixed before a next oil change. The front bumper has some significant cracks from the cold winter, but could simply be more firmly re-attached where it was jostled by the deer. However, the car is running perfectly otherwise and I have been able to drive it without any problems.
Even with the recent front-end damage, this car is worth $3,500. I’m selling it for $2,000.

Communication Studies professor David Lapakko has once again been selected as a finalist for the Great American Think-Off, a philosophy competition held each June in New York Mills, MN. The Think-Off receives hundreds of essays every year from around the nation, and the top four writers are invited to an audience debate to determine who will win the title of “America’s Greatest Thinker.” In addition, finalists receive a cash award of $500. Lapakko was a finalist in 2013 and won the Think-Off championship in 2015; he hopes to be the first person in its 27-year history to win the event twice. This year’s question is, “To vote or not to vote: does it matter?” The Think-Off debates are in the New York Mills high school auditorium on Saturday evening, June 8.

Each year, delegations from each of the ELCA Colleges come together to explore the distinct roles that they play in higher education. One of the benefits being the host site is that we have the option of inviting more than five people to attend. This year’s theme is “Beyond Privilege: Engaging Diversity, Inclusion and Equity.”
The conference will begin with an opening session at 5 pm followed by a dinner at 7:00 pm on July 15 and conclude by 1:00 pm on July 17.

Dear Augsburg Community,
I am writing to share the sad news that our dear friend Gladys Boxrud Strommen ’46 passed away peacefully Monday night with family by her side.
Gladys and her husband, Clair ‘46, who passed away in 2001, served and supported Augsburg in significant ways throughout the years.
Through a generous gift, the family established the Clair and Gladys Strommen Center for Meaningful Work in recognition of their personal commitment to creating meaning and purpose in work and life.
They commissioned the Burning Bush sculpture in front of the Christensen Center and have two endowed funds: a scholarship fund and a program fund for the Strommen Center. Both Gladys and Clair served on the Augsburg Board of Regents and hosted many alumni gatherings at their homes in Minnesota and Florida. We will post the obituary and information about the memorial service, when it’s available.
Her loss is a big one, but her legacy will continue to be felt by generations of Auggies to come.

We have launched a website, inside.augsburg.edu/classof2023 to help inform the campus about the work of the action team Provost Karen Kaivola has convened to coordinate preparations to support the very large expected incoming first-year class.
The site includes a roster of the action team members, a page that provides an overview of the various initiatives in progress, and a page that lists the departments and programs that the action team has engaged in this work.
The site also has a tab where you can submit questions or suggestions. If there’s an area you believe the action team should be addressing, let us know. If you need additional clarification on the work of the action team, let us know that. We will update the site regularly. (The action team will meet weekly this summer.)

Additionally, if you wish, you will be instructed to perform flexibility training for 6 weeks under the supervision exercise science students at Augsburg. Each year, delegations from each of the ELCA Colleges come together to explore the distinct roles that they play in higher education. One of the benefits being the host site is that we have the option of inviting more than five people to attend. This year’s theme is “Beyond Privilege: Engaging Diversity, Inclusion and Equity.”
The conference will begin with an opening session at 5 pm followed by a dinner at 7:00 pm on July 15 and conclude by 1:00 pm on July 17.

You are invited to participate in a research study on Lower back pain, Physical Education participation, and Physical Activity Levels in Urban Midwest University students, faculty and staff. You will be asked to fill out a one-time survey and participate in a fitness assessment (sit and reach test and YMCA 3 minute step test). You will be compensated upon completion of the survey and testing with a $10 Target gift card.
Additionally, if you wish, you will be instructed to perform flexibility training for 6 weeks under the supervision exercise science students at Augsburg. There will be compensation for follow up visits ($5 Target gift card each time).

Last year 220 employers provided 279 registered internship opportunities to Augsburg students. This past Friday the Strommen Center hosted its annual Employer Recognition breakfast to thank intern supervisors and award the 2019 Exceptional Intern Awards.
Intern supervisors coach, mentor, teach, and guide Augsburg students to become work ready and learn valuable lessons during their internships.
Along with intern supervisors, faculty advisers do a tremendous amount of work with students throughout the semester and their academic career to ensure they are career ready when they graduate. We were happy to thank some of you on Friday at the breakfast. To the rest you, thank your for you partnership and tireless effort supporting Augsburg students.

I am writing to share that Jodi Collen, senior director of University Events, has accepted an event planning leadership position with another organization and will be leaving Augsburg on June 4. (I’m not sure whether her new organization has yet announced her hire, so I won’t name them in this post, but you can certainly ask Jodi about her new role — it sounds very exciting.)
The impact Jodi has made during her time at Augsburg has been nothing short of phenomenal. She was recruited back to Augsburg from a corporate event planner position in 2007 to lead the events department, transforming it from a meeting and event support function into a world-class event planning operation. She set a high bar for what an Augsburg experience should be, and we will greatly miss her vision, her leadership, and her commitment to this place.
We are planning an on-campus send-off for Jodi on Thursday, May 30, at 3 p.m. in the Marshall Room. (Click the link below to add this to your calendar.) Please join us in wishing Jodi well on her new endeavor and celebrating her all amazing accomplishments at Augsburg. It’s quite a legacy!
