MNUDL Volunteer Opportunity: Seeking Finance Professionals to Judge Financial Literacy Debates

submitted by froehlic@augsburg.edu

You’re Invited! Judge Debates & Network with Students on May 21st!

The MN Urban Debate League is looking for financial professionals that identify as female or gender non-conforming to judge at our annual Financial Literacy Debate tournament this year!

You do not need debate experience to be a judge. We will provide training and opportunities to ask questions prior to the tournament, and will also be available to support you during the tournament.

Financial Literacy Debate is an innovative program that supports students’ public speaking, critical thinking, and financial literacy skills and knowledge. Our program works to close the gender gap in the financial sector by building the leadership and financial knowledge of high school participants that identify as female or gender non-conforming, through debate. Over the course of the initiative, students meet with their coach after school, learn about the topic area and fundamental economic concepts through an engaging curriculum, hold practice debates, and participate in a competition with other schools.

Our tournament this year is tentatively scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 21 from 9:30 am – 2:30 pm at Augsburg University. The tournament schedule will be as follows:

· 9:30 am: Judge training

· 10:00 am: Judge three debate rounds about the benefits/harms of cryptocurrency

· 1:00: Lunch and networking between students and financial professionals

· 2:00: Awards Ceremony

· 2:30: End

Sign up at our website to be a part of our event at Augsburg University on May 21st from 9:30 AM – 2:30 PM. https://mnudl.augsburg.edu/volunteer-opportunities/

Thank you for supporting our students as they build their financial literacy skills and explore career pathways in finance!

Announcing the Winners of the Inaugural Nilsson Transcultural Nurse of the Year Award

submitted by farrisr@augsburg.edu

Jenna Nelson and Valerie DeCora Guimaraes, two nurses pursuing advanced degrees at Augsburg, have received the inaugural Nilsson Transcultural Nurse of the Year Award. Transcultural nursing emphasizes care in culturally diverse settings, including outreach to people who are underserved by traditional care systems and who exist outside of the social mainstream. The award is named for professor emerita Beverly Nilsson, who chaired the Department of Nursing and championed care for people living in poverty.

Nelson has spent the majority of her career working with marginalized communities as an emergency department nurse. While working to become a family nurse practitioner, she has engaged extensively as an intern and volunteer at the Health Commons. These nurse-led drop-in sites provide hospitality and care to guests from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, many of whom are unhoused or living with mental illness. When the pandemic closed the drop-in locations, Nelson joined a team making weekly food deliveries to local encampments.

Guimaraes is the Mayo Clinic’s first Patient Experience Ambassador to work solely with Native American patients. In this role she works to dispel myths about Native American patients and educates colleagues across the Mayo enterprise about health disparities and spiritual care practices. She established a medication initiative to coordinate care with the Indian Health Service upon patient discharge from Mayo, developed a Native American family fund to address food and transportation needs, and successfully advocated to hire additional Native American Patient Navigators in MN and AZ.

Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition, Jenna and Valerie!

Hennepin County Moves to Medium COVID-19 Community Level

submitted by rjohn@augsburg.edu

The following information, as well as links to more detail and information about health risk factors, are published on Augsburg’s April 30 COVID-19 Dashboard: https://sites.augsburg.edu/outbreak-planning/covid-19-alert-levels-dashboard/

In the most recent CDC report of COVID-19 community levels by county, published Thursday, April 28, both Hennepin and Ramsey counties remained in the low range. However, Hennepin’s 7-day case rate per 100,000 was just below the threshold for the medium community level.

The day after the CDC report was published, the 7-day case rate in Hennepin County moved above 200 cases per 100,000 population. This represents a medium community level, although the status will not be updated on the CDC web site until this coming Thursday.

At a medium community level, the CDC recommends that people who are immunocompromised or have high risk for severe disease talk with a physician and consider precautions, such as masking indoors and regular testing. The CDC also provides an extensive list of health risk factors, which people are encouraged to review, as there are a number of conditions that can make COVID-19 more severe.

Additionally, the City of Minneapolis on Thursday issued a recommendation that everyone, regardless of vaccination status, wear masks indoors. This is not a mask mandate, but a strong recommendation from public health officials given the growing case rates in the city.

At this time, case numbers on campus remain low, and Augsburg is not implementing any new or additional COVID-19 requirements. We will continue to monitor the regional COVID-19 community levels and provide updates, as needed.

MN Urban Debate League Seeks Paid Judges in May and June

submitted by froehlic@augsburg.edu

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, is seeking debate judges for our Spanish Debate League and East African Debate programs. These programs serve middle and high school students at Minneapolis Public Schools, Saint Paul Public Schools, and select suburban partners and charter schools. Both programs are led by community members, who have taken the policy debate format, and tweaked it to support their students’ growth and engagement.

Judges will earn $55 per virtual tournament. No speech & debate experience is needed to be a judge, though it can be helpful – we will fully train you. More things to know:

* Judges listen to debates, provide constructive feedback, and pick a winner. In the process, they help students build confidence and academic skills like critical thinking, deep listening, and argumentation.

* Judges for our Spanish Debate League must be fluent in Spanish.
East African Debate League tournaments are held in English. (You do not have to be East African to judge, but the topic of the debate pertains directly to the community- what are the pros and cons of attending an integrated public school vs. a culturally-specific charter school?).

* Both types of judges must pass a background check and have a supportive, educational mindset.

Tournaments on these dates will be all virtual! Tournaments are generally held from 4:00-7:00 PM on weeknights. We plan to announce any in-person tournaments at a later date, which will be held in the Twin Cities area.

SPANISH DEBATE LEAGUE:

May 5
May 12
May 19

EAST AFRICAN DEBATE:

May 31st
June 14th

Don’t Forget Your Mail

submitted by longj@augsburg.edu

As we near the end of another year please don’t forget to take care of your campus mailbox. This includes checking it for any mail, returning your lock and filing out the survey for what you would like us to do with your mail after this semester.
Two weeks after the spring semester ends (May 16, 2022) we will be closing all student campus boxes. Then before the fall semester starts we will reassign them (possible new numbers) to all students living on campus. Commuter students can then request to have a campus box if they would like one.
If you would like your mail forwarded or would like to keep your mailbox open for the summer, please either fill out this survey (https://forms.gle/872EQGhwK1tCWiPB6) or send us an email (mailship@augsburg.edu) with any relevant information. There is also an option to be reassigned your current campus box number for the next semester if you will be returning in the fall.
We are only able to forward 1st Class USPS mail and packages. Other packages (UPS, FedEx, Amazon, etc.), magazines, non-profit mail and standard mail will not be forwarded. We can also only forward to USA addresses. The forwarding period for the Augsburg Mailroom is two months from when the request is submitted. Afterward any additional mail we receive will be returned to sender.
We request that you contact the people/business sending you mail and update your address with them. Enrolling in online/electronic bills or statements can also be a smart option. It is environmentally friendly, secure and will often save you time (and sometimes money). Asking us to forward your mail does not change your mailing address with the post office or the University, just the Mailroom.

Department or Organization Facebook Pages: Important Security Update

submitted by alamilla@augsburg.edu

Facebook has begun disabling certain types of accounts that were used in the past to create and manage pages for Augsburg academic departments and other groups on campus. These so-called “gray accounts” do not have access to the same security features as standard accounts, and are being phased out by Facebook to increase security. Pages that only list a gray account as the Admin could be disabled by this change during the month of April.

If your department has an active Facebook page that was created by your area LFC, or if you do not know who created the page, please check to ensure that at least one person with a standard Facebook profile is listed as an Admin.

1. From your page, select Settings and then Page Roles.

2. Under Existing Page Roles, if the only Admin listed is an email alias using the format “department_social@augsburg.edu” (e.g., marketing_social@augsburg.edu), this is a gray account and your page is at risk of being disabled.

3. Under Assign a New Page Role, add at least one person with a standard Facebook account tied to either an Augsburg or personal email address as an Admin.
Marketing and Communication and IT are developing a new set of procedures and best practices to ensure that the university retains access to Augsburg-related Facebook pages as individual employees change over time. We will share these with the community in the coming weeks.

In the short term, please contact your LFC with any questions or requests for support.

Free At-Home COVID-19 Test Kits Available

submitted by norland@augsburg.edu

Minnesotans are able to order two test kits (for a total of four tests) per home through an online ordering system. Minnesota has secured 500,000 test kits (for a total of 1 million at-home tests) and the program will be available until all the test kits are ordered. Minnesota will use this program as a model for providing more access to COVID-19 rapid testing in the months ahead.

Minnesotans will be able to visit mn.gov/covid19 to request two test kits, or four total tests, per household. Tests will be available until supply has been exhausted. If this program proves successful and valuable for Minnesotans, the state will count on it as a key part of the response to future case surges.

The State of Minnesota’s at-home PCR testing program through Vault Health ended on March 31. Minnesotans who have Vault PCR tests at home will be able to use them until they expire, or until December 31, 2022, whichever is first.

Instructional Cost Budget Work Continues

submitted by pike@augsburg.edu

We invite faculty to review the weekly updates regarding cuts in courses and assignments. Please submit questions to the BWG as the work continues to make additional adjustments this month. Each week Senate President Andy Aoki includes responses to these questions in the report sent directly to all faculty members. We welcome other contact as well. Extended CWC Walk-In Hours and After-Hours Phone Counseling

submitted by phalp1@augsburg.edu

Many in our community are holding grief and trauma as we learn of the tragic and violent loss of Dion Ford, a recent transfer to Augsburg and a graduate of St. Paul Central. For many in our community, the compounding losses of this semester, and of the recent years, can feel overwhelmingly heavy to process and feel. Knowing this, the Center for Wellness & Counseling wants to remind the campus community of two important support resources: our walk-in hours and our after-hours phone counseling service. Walk-in hours will be extended this week, with support being offered Monday and Tuesday from 9:00-3:00. Regular walk-in hours will be offered on Wednesday and Thursday from 1:00-3:00. The after-hours phone counseling and crisis support service is available anytime CWC is closed (evenings, nights, weekends, and 24/7 over break). Just call CWC’s main number (612-330-1707) and press 1. As always, regular counseling appointments are available by calling CWC or emailing cwc@augsburg.edu. Know that CWC is here for you, we see you, we are here to sit with whatever you need to bring to the table, and we encourage you to reach out for support.

Department or Organization Facebook Pages: Important Security Update

The Sverdrup Visiting Scientist Program – April 12

submitted by reederm@augsburg.edu

The Sverdrup Visiting Scientist Program welcomes Dr. Jennifer L. Ross, Professor and Physics Department Chair at Syracuse University, who will present The Future is Alive! Physics Lessons from Biology as part of the ongoing Sverdrup lecture series.

Tuesday, April 12, 11:00 – 12:00pm
Hoversten Chapel, Foss Center

Imagine a world where potholes in roads seal themselves like cuts in your skin, your body reports directly to your doctor on pain and medication, and we can explore and inhabit other planets using pre-fabricated houses that build themselves. To reach these dreams, we must understand the physics behind biology that can already perform such exciting activities. In this talk, we will explore how the skeleton of the cell is able to arrange itself and how enzymes could move faster than expected when they perform their chemical reaction.
