Campus-wide Bulletin

submitted by erchula@augsburg.edu

October 11, 2021

Yesterday evening Public Safety staff were made aware of stickers placed at various locations across campus promoting a white supremacist group. This particular group is known to place propaganda on college and university campuses, but is typically non-violent.

The stickers were placed in the various locations between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. by two individuals. One suspect was a white male, approximately 6’0”, clean shaven, thin, wearing a tan baseball hat, dark jacket and blue jeans. The other suspect was a white male, approximately 5’8”, stocky, wearing a tan hat, grey hoodie under a flannel shirt, and blue jeans.

Public Safety staff, along with the Facilities staff worked quickly to remove all known stickers from campus property. Furthermore, leaders from Public Safety, Equity and Inclusion Initiatives, and Student Affairs will continue to monitor the situation and take immediate action on any reports of continued activity from this, or other racist organizations, on campus. For support regarding this incident, please contact the Center for Wellness and Counseling at 612-330-1707, Equity and Inclusion Initiatives at 612-330-1126, or Multicultural Life at 612-330-1087.

If you have any helpful information regarding this incident to report, please contact the Department of Public Safety at 612-330-1717.

Please report any and all concerns that may impact our campus community. If You See Something – Say Something (x1717). We also encourage you to utilize the resources available on our website: http://www.augsburg.edu/dps and in the CampusShield safety app (available for free download on Google Play and iTunes app stores).

Indoor Mask Mandate in Effect at Augsburg

submitted by alamilla@augsburg.edu

All students, staff, and faculty are required to wear face coverings in indoor campus spaces, except when eating in dining areas or when in one’s own residential unit or individual office with the door closed. This applies to all U.S. Augsburg locations. (International Augsburg locations are following local protocols.) Masks or face coverings are not required outdoors.

Over the weekend of July 31-August 1, the regional case rates in both Hennepin and Ramsey counties moved to a “substantial” transmission rate (between 50 and 99.99 cases per 100,000 population over 7 days, as defined by the CDC). As a result, Augsburg reinstated the indoor face covering requirement, effective Tuesday, August 3.

Next Week: Forum Webinar, Using Innovative Simulation Strategies to Dismantle Systemic Racism

submitted by gocmen@augsburg.edu

When: August 19, 2021 11:00 am – 12:00 pm CST
Presenters: Samreen Vora, Children’s Minnesota  |  Brittany Dahlen, Children’s Minnesota
Cost: Free

Register at: https://forumworkplaceinclusion.org/webinars/using-innovative-simulation-strategies-to-dismantle-systemic-racism/

Many organizations are flocking to implement implicit bias training and other activities to bring to light the structural racism present in our organizations. Although implicit bias training is the first step in creating awareness, it is important to get to the next step of behavior change. Implementation of bias mitigation strategies can be challenging to achieve. Simulation-Based Training (SBT) can be the bridge between creating awareness and moving to action.
This session will delve into SBT and opportunities for partnering with equity and inclusion training to promote health equity. The webinar will discuss how deliberate practice of both recognition of bias and implementation of strategies to mitigate bias can be integrated into implicit bias training. Real examples of the partnership between SBT and equity and inclusion training will be provided and participants will have an opportunity to begin developing facilitation skills for leading SBT deliberate practice conversations

Learning Outcomes
Describe the simulation strategies applicable to promoting health equity
Integrate implicit bias mitigation strategies into simulations
Apply equity and inclusion facilitation skills to simulation facilitation

Seeking Scientist Interested in Waterfowl/Birds for Collaboration

submitted by froehlic@augsburg.edu

My name is Rebecca Froehlich and I am an Augsburg University staff member.

I’d like to an extend an invitation for collaboration for Art to Change the World’s Coaching Project for a Better World.

I am planning to submit as an Artist with an idea for doing Junior Duck Stamp coaching for students in the Twin Cities metro who don’t have the program at their own schools. (I was the Junior Duck Stamp South Dakota Best of Show Winner in 2012 and have a BFA in Painting- this program helped sparked my interest in conservation so I want to share it widely!)

For part of the application, I would like to have a Scientist coach co-sign who would be interested in helping teach the students directly about waterfowl in conjunction with the art instruction. If you’re interested, please contact me at froehlic@augsburg.edu.

All who are accepted with the grant will be paid ($1,200 stipend per coach, plus $3,000 for supplies).

The due date is August 15th.

Art to Change the World also welcomes your own ideas! I’ve been told that they are low on applications from Scientists, so anyone who works in the field would be welcome to apply! All involved will be paid (see more details below).

High Holy Day Primer

submitted by dames@augsburg.edu

Created by Interfaith Fellow ’17-’19 Wendy Goldberg, to help Augsburg know about this big season for Jews in our community.
We are entering the Jewish High Holy Day season, which runs for the month of Tishrei this year from Monday evening, Sept. 6 – Sept. 29, including Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Sukkot.
For college students, being away from home for these holidays can highlight the homesickness and the yearning to be in the nest, and for some, quite the opposite. If you celebrate Christmas, imagine staying on campus while most students return home. If you celebrate Ramadan, this season is similar to that month of observance.
How to be an ally: We encourage you to have conversations with your Jewish students and colleagues about their observances. If you are aware that students or colleagues are Jewish, it would likely be welcomed to ask them how they observe the holidays and what they mean to them. You could also move important meetings or events away from Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
2021 dates for these holidays:
Rosh Hashanah begins at sundown on Sept. 6 and ends at nightfall on Sept. 8. Some American Jews celebrate for one day, others for two.
Yom Kippur begins an hour before sundown on Sept. 15 and ends at nightfall on Sept. 16. After a 25-hour fast and being in synagogue services, the feast goes into the evening, like an Eid meal. This is the holiest of holy days and for those observing, they would not do work for these 25 hours.
Sukkot begins at sundown on Mon, Sept. 20, and the first two days are considered holy days where some Jews don’t work, use electricity, etc. Sukkot ends at sundown on Sept. 28 for some, and Sept. 29 for others.
If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to Wendy Goldberg: wengold66@gmail.com or 612-386-1191. To connect students with Jewish events or community contact Rivka Buchbinder buchbinr@augsburg.edu of Minnesota Hillel-Augsburg or University of Minnesota Hillel, 612-379-4026 hillel@umn.edu.
