I am pleased to announce several changes designed to better align and integrate international education operations at Augsburg. All are effective immediately. The full announcement of these changes can be viewed by linking here: http://go.augsburg.edu/intled.

International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS)
ISSS reporting lines will shift from Student Affairs to Academic Affairs, permitting closer collaboration in global exchange programs between ISSS and the Center for Global Education & Experience (CGEE). Jim Trelstad-Porter, the Director of ISSS, will report to the Assistant Provost of Global Education & Experience.

Angela Bonfiglio, the ISSS International Student Advisor, will move to a year-round position and go on reporting to the Director of ISSS. Her responsibilities will be split into two parts. She will continue overseeing international students’ campus orientation, providing academic advising and leading the International Student Organization (ISO). The other half of her job will be to recruit non-Augsburg students for CGEE’s semester programs.

Center for Global Education & Experience (CGEE)
In addition to existing responsibilities for advising Augsburg students who wish to study abroad, Maren Stoddard Mack will take over coordination of off-campus undergraduate programs led by Augsburg faculty (a.k.a. faculty-led programs). Peggy Johnson will continue to coordinate graduate and nursing faculty-led programs.

As mentioned above, Angela Bonfiglio will begin dedicating half her time to recruiting semester-long CGEE students from other colleges and universities. Non-Augsburg students bring additional diversity and dynamism to CGEE programs, and they produce additional revenue.

Norway Hub
The Norway Hub will now be more intentionally linked to Augsburg’s broader international education efforts, with the reporting line for Bettine Hermanson, the hub’s Managing Director, shifting to the Assistant Provost of Global Education & Experience.

It is my pleasure to announce that Bryan Massich has been promoted from Maintenance Manager to Facilities Operations Manager.

In this expanded role, Bryan oversees landscaping, maintenance, custodial and athletic facilities and will report directly to me. He is currently working on many projects throughout campus. Additionally, Bryan is serving on the Space Planning Committee, Housing Task Force and the Hagfors Transition Team to name a few.

Bryan joined Augsburg in 2013 and is pursuing a degree in Business Management here at Augsburg University with an anticipated 2020 graduation date.

Congratulations to Prof. David Lapakko (Communication Studies, Film, and New Media) who has once again been recognized by the Great American Think-Off, a philosophy competition sponsored by the New York Mills, MN Cultural Center. This year, Lapakko’s essay was chosen in the top 8 out of hundreds submitted from around the nation; he will receive an honorable mention award at the Think-Off debates being held this coming Saturday night in New York Mills. Lapakko is one of two honorees from Minnesota; the others hail from Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Illinois. In 2013, Prof. Lapakko was a bronze medal winner at this event and in 2015 he was the overall champion; he also received honorable mention awards in 2016 and 2017. This year’s question is, “Which plays a larger role in shaping one’s life: Success or Failure?”

Yes, we know the garden still doesn’t look much like a garden, but it’s on it’s way!

Last week we got “rock column” drains in the raised beds to prepare for more rain and approved a new soil mix for the top 10 inches of all the gardens that will help our plants flourish.

This week’s happenings:

-Student communal garden plots being creatively planned and planted on the south edge
-Prairie plantings and apple trees installed on the west edge
-New soil added to all beds
-Gardeners finally planting beginning Wednesday!!

Stay tuned for updates on special events, and feel free to come out and wander through the garden, thank all the landscaping crew for their overtime work these last couple weeks, and meet some gardeners!

If you have extra rhubarb, raspberries, strawberries, herbs, or vegetable starts that need a new home, you can drop them off on top of one of the benches in the garden and we will find a good spot for them.

Dear faculty and staff colleagues:

I am excited to announce that Marah Jacobson-Schulte will join us as Augsburg University’s new Registrar. In this role, she will lead and oversee the work of the Registrar’s Office, cultivate strong collaborative partnerships across the University, and serve as a member of the Academic Affairs Leadership Team, key committees, and the UC-Leadership Forum. As the University Registrar, she will report directly to me as provost. Her official start date will be June 27, 2018.

Marah comes to Augsburg having served most recently as registrar for The Sage Colleges in New York. Prior to this position she served for several years as the Director of Experiential Learning and Community Engagement at the College of St. Benedict/St. John’s University. She brings to the position deep leadership experience and a broad understanding of higher education, informed by years of hands-on engagement with students, faculty, and administration. She also brings experience in developing infrastructure, implementing innovative strategies, and cultivating strong partnerships across divisions. She received the bachelor of science in community psychology, the master of science in higher education administration and is completing the doctorate in higher education administration from St. Cloud State University.

I extend my deep gratitude to Tom Kelsey and Christine Berkenpas for their able leadership of the Registrar’s Office during this interim period. I am also grateful for the dedication and commitment of the Registrar’s search committee, chaired by Chief Student Success Officer Katie Bishop, for its good work in identifying highly qualified candidates in the search process.

If you’re in or near the garden this week, you may see a big soil vacuum truck pulling out all the soil (who knew such a thing existed?!). Don’t worry, we didn’t actually plant this weekend, so they’re not getting rid of any new seedlings…. just replacing the existing soil so we can have good quality soil in place when we do actually start planting.

The garden will be green and thriving soon!

Participants needed for a psychology experiment on eye movements during reading.

Participants will view a series of paragraphs on a computer screen and locate grammatical errors in the passage using a computer mouse. A camera will track and record eye activity during the proofreading task.

Compensation: $5

Time commitment: 15 – 20 minutes

Requirements: Participants must be aged 18+, and have normal (or corrected-to-normal) vision

Participants will have their eye movements monitored by a specialized camera while making judgments about images of human faces. The study is expected to take 30 minutes, and eligible participants will receive $10 USD as compensation. Calling all Somali American immigrants! Interested in participating in a new and exciting research opportunity? Read below to learn more about how you can participate. I am conducting research on the immigration and assimilation experiences of Somali immigrants and their descendants and I’m inviting you to participate because you identify as a Somali immigrant or are descended from those born in Somalia.

Assimilation: The process of adapting or adjusting to the culture of a group or nation.

Goal: To tell our stories! There is limited research on our immigration experiences, we deserve to be heard! Let’s show the world our resilience and showcase our amazing achievements.

Approximately 25 new students will be arriving to Minneapolis in late August for orientation. Towards the end of their week, we would love to have students have the opportunity to connect more with a faculty or staff on campus, make connections, and have the chance to be in someone’s home.

Here are the details:
You will meet your students at 5:30 p.m. in the Oyate Commons on Thursday, August 30. We are asking for you to host 3-4 students and drive them to your home for a meal. We ask that you bring them back by around 8:30 p.m. If you are interested, please email Angela Bonfiglio, International Student Advisor at bonfigli@augsburg.edu. We are looking for around 8 hosts.

In short, my senior show is a requirement for my graphic design degree. My show will take form in a series of twenty short books that will each center around one of you that will be exhibited in the student gallery in Christensen Center that is now known as Gallery 720. The goal of my show is to provide a space where Augsburg community members can connect with one another without a breach of privacy. Each story will be anonymous.
