CACE Course: Disembodying White Supremacy Through Bodywork

Registration is now available for Augsburg’s inaugural offerings of Disembodying White Supremacy Through Bodywork course. Join us to learn to understand your body’s reaction to racial discomfort, identify where racial stress is stored, and metabolize that discomfort to avoid getting stuck in your anti-racism efforts. Class discussion will focus on healing and ways to root our anti-racism in healing justice. Indigenous, Black and Brown bodies will be offered an affinity space for deeper healing.

In-person: Mondays, 6-9pm, March 20, 27, and April 3

We are in need of editors to help us decide what pieces to include in this year’s edition of Thó Wiŋ Magazine! Please join us for Decision Day on Tuesday, February 28th at 5 pm in the Auggie Room (we will provide snacks and refreshments)!

We have just over 40 submissions across multiple categories such as poetry, screenplay excerpts, short stories, visual arts, and more. We would love to have as many opinions as possible from the Augsburg community to help us decide what we will be publishing this year. You can help us with all the categories or just a few– whatever works best for you!

Auggies Participate in Konhauser Problemfest

An Augsburg University team consisting of a Computer Science major Alinase Phiri, a Mathematics major Kebba Janneh, and a Mathematics and Computer Science double major Max Figura participated this past Saturday in a mathematical competition, Konhauser Problemfest, hosted this year by St. Olaf College. While the famous Pizza Theorem Traveling Trophy remained in Carleton hands (as it has for 10 of the past 13 contests), the Augsburg team had a formidable showing of fully solving 3 out of 10 problems and partially 2 more. Congrats, the team, and see you again, and hopefully others too, next year, this time at Macalester!

Participants Needed for Paid Psychology Skill-Building Study (Earn Up to $35)

This research study (IRB #: 2022-32-03) is designed to compare two different skill-building training programs that may help college students develop adjustment-related skills. You are eligible to participate if you are a current Augsburg undergraduate student.

If you decide to participate, you will be asked to come to our Augsburg Psychology research laboratory for 4 sessions over the course of one month. The sessions include an initial orientation meeting and three sessions focused on one of two skills-building programs (you will be randomly assigned to one of the two–like a flip of a coin). Both programs involve mini-informational videos as well as experiential activities for you to complete. We will also have you complete a few personality measures. You will be assigned a peer coach who will work with you as progress through the study and guide you through the study components. Each of the sessions will last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Finally, we will check in one last time 3-months after the study is over for a brief online survey.

Participants will receive up to $35 for their participation. $5 for each of the first three sessions, and $10 for both the fourth session and the 3 month follow-up. Alternatively, Augsburg University Psychology students will receive up to $25 and 4 research credits.

CTL is pleased to again offer our two annual, pedagogy-focused workshops this May! Both of these workshops require a short application and are limited to 8 participants each. Participation in each workshop also comes with a small stipend to support summer work focused on incorporating an aspect of the concepts into one of their courses.

The Integrated Course Design (ICD) Workshop is a 4-day (9am-noon each day) workshop offered to encourage faculty to develop their knowledge and skills in evidence-based engaging course design to create significant learning experiences for their students. It will take place May 17-18 and May 24-25, 2023 on campus.

The Anti-Racist Pedagogy (ARP) Workshop is a 2-day (9am-noon each day) workshop designed to build on Augsburg faculty’s critical self-reflection of their own social position (e.g via the Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program and anti-racist training) by providing evidence-based, anti-racist methods for designing and teaching courses in any discipline. It will take place May 4-5, 2023 on campus.

Full-time faculty: Do you wish you had uninterrupted time to write/work on scholarship? If so, you will want to take advantage of the annual Jessica Nathanson Scholarly Writing Retreat at the Dunrovin Retreat Center. Jess established a tradition of allowing faculty time away from campus to focus entirely on scholarship. There is no schedule for this retreat – it is simply time and space to work on scholarship. There is no cost to you for this retreat — The Center for Teaching and Learning will cover room and board (and WiFi). We ask that you commit to being present on all three days of the event. Our time begins at 5:00 pm on Sunday May 14th and ends at 3:00 pm on Tuesday May 16th. Space is limited to 18 full-time faculty members; if we receive more than 18 registrations, the additional registrants will automatically be placed on a waiting list in order of registration.

Annual Distinguished Contribution Faculty Award Nominations Open Through March 17

Each year, Augsburg University recognizes up to four faculty members for excellence in one of three categories: teaching, scholarship, and service. Candidates for these Distinguished Contribution awards must be nominated by a member of the Augsburg community – faculty, students, staff, or leadership. Thus, we are counting on all of you to ensure we know of the faculty who deserve this recognition!

New this year: the nomination process has been changed to require less up-front time for the nominator with the goal of substantially increasing the numbers of initial nominations.

All full-time faculty who have taught at Augsburg for the last 3 years are eligible to be nominated for all three categories (Teaching, Service, and Scholarship). Adjunct faculty who have taught at Augsburg for the last 3 years are eligible to be nominated for the Teaching category.

Looking for Auggies who are interested in community and leadership building with Latinx youth who attend high schools around the Twin Cities. Youth in Action (YA!) is a college access and mentoring program who serve Latinx students with our Minneapolis and St. Paul cohort as a part of youth programming at Comunidades Latinas Unidas en Servicio CLUES. YA! Minneapolis meets at Augsburg University (East Commons in the Christensen Center) every first Saturday of the month from 1-4:30pm throughout the school year (September-June).

No specific backgrounds or prerequisites are needed, only a passion to build community with Latinx high school students and their mentors. As a support mentor, you will have access to support students who are exploring their interests, as well as have the opportunity to network with their mentors who are professionals in a variety of careers. This is an excellent opportunity who Auggies who are interested in education, social services, etc. or just want to support their community!

Interested in Research and Graduate School? Apply to the TRIO McNair Scholars Program

Augsburg’s TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting students for Fall 2023 admission. Eligible applicants will be at Junior status by the end of Spring 2024 and available to conduct full-time research Summer 2024. Students from all majors are welcome to apply, though preference is given to applicants that are interested in pursuing a doctoral (Ph.D.) degree. The priority deadline to apply is March 31; however, applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until all participant slots are filled.

The TRIO McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through coursework, academic advising, workshops, and involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. The program also assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($6000) with an Augsburg faculty member during Summer of 2024.

The McNair Scholars Program is federally-funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, applicants must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college or university) AND low-income AND/OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents and maintain at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA (3.0+ preferred).

Support East Phillips and Little Earth in Their Fight to Defend the Depot

In The South Minneapolis neighborhood of East Phillips, on Dakota territory, there is a building known as the “Roof Depot.” Community members, and especially those living at the Little Earth housing complex, want to turn it into a community center and indoor farm, with rooftop solar. The city of Minneapolis wants to demolish it, to build a highly polluting truck yard and diesel fueling station.

The Depot suppresses an arsenic plume deposited by a pesticide factory that operated next door from 1938-1963. If it gets demolished, residents would be at risk of toxic arsenic exposure. The city has no stated plan for remediating this arsenic or ensuring that it won’t poison community members.

AU Wellness Hike Tomorrow – Meet Fellow AU Students and Enjoy Time in the Fresh Snow

All Adult Undergraduate program students, their families, and leashed pets are invited to join us for an off-campus hike/meet & greet at Moir Park in Bloomington, MN.

We will meet by picnic shelter #1, which is located in between both playgrounds. Free parking is available and the trail is wheelchair accessible,although winter conditions may impact accessibility. Please get in touch with the City of Bloomington about the conditions of the trail.

The weather will be chilly, so dress accordingly. We plan to hike for about 30-40 minutes, but of course, you are welcome to stay as long as you want!

Full-time faculty: Do you wish you had uninterrupted time to write/work on scholarship? If so, you will want to take advantage of the annual Jessica Nathanson Scholarly Writing Retreat at the Dunrovin Retreat Center. Jess established a tradition of allowing faculty time away from campus to focus entirely on scholarship. There is no schedule for this retreat – it is simply time and space to work on scholarship. There is no cost to you for this retreat — The Center for Teaching and Learning will cover room and board (and WiFi). We ask that you commit to being present on all three days of the event. Our time begins at 5:00 pm on Sunday May 14th and ends at 3:00 pm on Tuesday May 16th. Space is limited to 18 full-time faculty members; if we receive more than 18 registrations, the additional registrants will automatically be placed on a waiting list in order of registration.

Annual Distinguished Contribution Faculty Award Nominations Open Through March 17

Each year, Augsburg University recognizes up to four faculty members for excellence in one of three categories: teaching, scholarship, and service. Candidates for these Distinguished Contribution awards must be nominated by a member of the Augsburg community – faculty, students, staff, or leadership. Thus, we are counting on all of you to ensure we know of the faculty who deserve this recognition!

New this year: the nomination process has been changed to require less up-front time for the nominator with the goal of substantially increasing the numbers of initial nominations.

All full-time faculty who have taught at Augsburg for the last 3 years are eligible to be nominated for all three categories (Teaching, Service, and Scholarship). Adjunct faculty who have taught at Augsburg for the last 3 years are eligible to be nominated for the Teaching category.

WHAT IS THE EAST AFRICAN DEBATE LEAGUE?

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, serves 9 districts across the Twin Cities Metro by providing the resources schools need to have successful debate teams. In 2015, with the help of community and on-campus partners, we hosted the Somali Debate Initiative Tournament – the first program of its kind in the nation. This tournament has grown into regular spring programming serving more than 100 students per year. In 2019, we rebranded the program to the East African Debate League, expanding our focus to include more students in these discussions about essential issues affecting the East African community.

From May-June, East African students debate a critical topic chosen by the community. Students have the opportunity to debate at three tournaments, leading to our special championship/community celebration event.

GET INVOLVED WITH EAST AFRICAN DEBATE

As we return to in-person programming after several years of virtual tournaments, we need in-person judges who can work with us in the Twin Cities!

No experience with debate is needed. Judges watch debate rounds and then evaluate teams on argumentation, logic, and public speaking skills.

Volunteers receive a short training and all necessary materials prior to the start of tournaments. Please attend our event to learn more, including how to become a paid judge!

In 2014, Spanish-speaking students and coaches took our policy debate format and transformed it into the Spanish Debate League.

In this program, all rounds and judging are held entirely in Spanish. Tournaments are held on weeknights April-May. Both middle and high school students compete in our tournaments, with a divisions to suit every level of Spanish mastery.

JUDGES EARN $55 PER TOURNAMENT!

Judges must be fluent in Spanish, but no prior judging experience is necessary to volunteer! Volunteers receive a short training and all necessary materials prior to the start of tournaments. Please attend our event to learn more!

Thank you so much for your warm-weather donations to people experiencing houselessness in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood! We were able to share the donated items with the Afghan Cultural Society ahead of the storm. Nasreen Sajady, cofounder and advocacy director of the Afghan Cultural Society, and a two-time Auggie alum, shared with us how they are seeing an influx of guests looking to find shelter from the cold, secure warm weather gear and water, and use the bathroom since the closure of the local encampment. We cannot thank you enough for your generosity and support. Auggie proud 🙂

Full-Time Faculty: Get Your Pedagogy on in May

CTL is pleased to again offer our two annual, pedagogy-focused workshops this May! Both of these workshops require a short application and are limited to 8 participants each. Participation in each workshop also comes with a small stipend to support summer work focused on incorporating an aspect of the concepts into one of their courses.

The Integrated Course Design (ICD) Workshop is a 4-day (9am-noon each day) workshop offered to encourage faculty to develop their knowledge and skills in evidence-based engaging course design to create significant learning experiences for their students. It will take place May 17-18 and May 24-25, 2023 on campus.

The Anti-Racist Pedagogy (ARP) Workshop is a 2-day (9am-noon each day) workshop designed to build on Augsburg faculty’s critical self-reflection of their own social position (e.g via the Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program and anti-racist training) by providing evidence-based, anti-racist methods for designing and teaching courses in any discipline. It will take place May 4-5, 2023 on campus.

This is a pedagogy that encourages student-centered, democratic discussions around a common text to improve K-12 students’ critical thinking, reading, writing, and speaking skills.

Participants Needed for Paid Psychology Skill-Building Study (Earn Up to $35)

This research study (IRB #: 2022-32-03) is designed to compare two different skill-building training programs that may help college students develop adjustment-related skills. You are eligible to participate if you are a current Augsburg undergraduate student.

If you decide to participate, you will be asked to come to our Augsburg Psychology research laboratory for 4 sessions over the course of one month. The sessions include an initial orientation meeting and three sessions focused on one of two skills-building programs (you will be randomly assigned to one of the two–like a flip of a coin). Both programs involve mini-informational videos as well as experiential activities for you to complete. We will also have you complete a few personality measures. You will be assigned a peer coach who will work with you as progress through the study and guide you through the study components. Each of the sessions will last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Finally, we will check in one last time 3-months after the study is over for a brief online survey.

Participants will receive up to $35 for their participation. $5 for each of the first three sessions, and $10 for both the fourth session and the 3 month follow-up. Alternatively, Augsburg University Psychology students will receive up to $25 and 4 research credits.

Nominations for the Outstanding Staff and Newcomer Awards are due no later than 5:00 p.m. on March 3, 2023. Nominations are welcomed from any current member of the campus community – staff, faculty, or students.

The Staff Appreciation Program is intended to recognize staff members who have made an important contribution to the campus community over the past year. Recipients of the Outstanding Staff Award provide exceptional service to others, work collaboratively across divisions or departments, demonstrate a clear commitment to equity and inclusion, and enhance the objectives of their department and the mission of Augsburg University through creativity, innovation, and hard work.

The Newcomer Award recognizes a staff person who has made a significant impact on campus life in a short amount of time. Staff who have been at Augsburg for two years or less (as of March 1, 2023) are eligible to receive this award.

Staff Senate will award five Outstanding Staff awards and one Newcomer award during the in-person event on March 22nd.

On Friday, March 10, 2023, Augsburg University, through the work of Norway Hub, will have the honor of hosting the Norwegian Speaker of the House (Stortinget), Mr. Masud Gharahkhani and his delegation of 2-3 people on campus.

The STUDENT SESSION will take place on March 10, 2023 from 1:50 – 3:00 pm in OGC 201.

Any students or classes are welcome to attend.

Mr. Gharahkhani was appointed this position in 2021, and has dedicated his life to politics in Norway. He came to Norway as a refugee from Iran at the age of 5, and started his political career in 2009. Mr. Gharahkhani is interested in and passionate about immigration, interfaith and inclusion, and of course politics.

His main goal for this trip is to meet with the larger Norwegian American community in the midwest, hear about the work of Augsburg University as well as meet with our students, staff and faculty.

Participants Needed for Paid Psychology Skill-Building Study (Earn Up to $35)

This research study (IRB #: 2022-32-03) is designed to compare two different skill-building training programs that may help college students develop adjustment-related skills. You are eligible to participate if you are a current Augsburg undergraduate student.

If you decide to participate, you will be asked to come to our Augsburg Psychology research laboratory for 4 sessions over the course of one month. The sessions include an initial orientation meeting and three sessions focused on one of two skills-building programs (you will be randomly assigned to one of the two–like a flip of a coin). Both programs involve mini-informational videos as well as experiential activities for you to complete. We will also have you complete a few personality measures. You will be assigned a peer coach who will work with you as progress through the study and guide you through the study components. Each of the sessions will last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Finally, we will check in one last time 3-months after the study is over for a brief online survey.

Participants will receive up to $35 for their participation. $5 for each of the first three sessions, and $10 for both the fourth session and the 3 month follow-up. Alternatively, Augsburg University Psychology students will receive up to $25 and 4 research credits.

Each year, Augsburg University recognizes up to four faculty members for excellence in one of three categories: teaching, scholarship, and service. Candidates for these Distinguished Contribution awards must be nominated by a member of the Augsburg community – faculty, students, staff, or leadership. Thus, we are counting on all of you to ensure we know of the faculty who deserve this recognition!

New this year: the nomination process has been changed to require less up-front time for the nominator with the goal of substantially increasing the numbers of initial nominations.

All full-time faculty who have taught at Augsburg for the last 3 years are eligible to be nominated for all three categories (Teaching, Service, and Scholarship). Adjunct faculty who have taught at Augsburg for the last 3 years are eligible to be nominated for the Teaching category.

Full-time faculty: Do you wish you had uninterrupted time to write/work on scholarship? If so, you will want to take advantage of the annual Jessica Nathanson Scholarly Writing Retreat at the Dunrovin Retreat Center. Jess established a tradition of allowing faculty time away from campus to focus entirely on scholarship. There is no schedule for this retreat – it is simply time and space to work on scholarship. There is no cost to you for this retreat — The Center for Teaching and Learning will cover room and board (and WiFi). We ask that you commit to being present on all three days of the event. Our time begins at 5:00 pm on Sunday May 14th and ends at 3:00 pm on Tuesday May 16th. Space is limited to 18 full-time faculty members; if we receive more than 18 registrations the additional registrants will automatically be placed on a waiting list in order of registration.

Interested in Research and Graduate School? Apply to the TRIO McNair Scholars Program

Augsburg’s TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting students for Fall 2023 admission. Eligible applicants will be at Junior status by the end of Spring 2024 and available to conduct full-time research Summer 2024. Students from all majors are welcome to apply, though preference is given to applicants that are interested in pursuing a doctoral (Ph.D.) degree. The priority deadline to apply is March 31; however, applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until all participant slots are filled.

The TRIO McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through coursework, academic advising, workshops, and involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. The program also assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($6000) with an Augsburg faculty member during Summer of 2024.

The McNair Scholars Program is federally-funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, applicants must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college or university) AND low-income AND/OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents and maintain at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA (3.0+ preferred).

Campus Cupboard Keeps Our Community Well-Fed and Thriving

On the ground floor of the Anderson residence hall, the Augsburg Campus Cupboard is buzzing with activity. A student worker reminds fellow Auggies to grab a box or a bag for their free groceries, and around 15 students are shopping in Augsburg’s free food cupboard.

Today, there is plenty of fresh produce – salad greens, apples and pears, onions and potatoes in addition to fresh herbs and berries. A refrigerator stands full of milk, yogurt, cheese, and dairy alternatives, and a freezer contains frozen chicken, ready-to-eat meals, and tortillas. The week before, the cupboard distributed a shipment of halal beef, goat meat, and salmon. Students browse canned goods, fresh bread, dried beans, pasta, and rice in addition to coconut milk, oil, vinegar, ketchup, fish sauce, Tabasco, and salad dressings.

Join us for Day at the Capitol 2023 where you can advocate for increased funding for education. Your legislators need to hear from you about the Minnesota State Grant program and other causes that are important to you.

What happens at Day at the Capitol?
You’ll attend a Minnesota State Grant advocacy and lobbying training with student advocates from Augsburg and other Minnesota private colleges. Then you’ll meet with legislators (we’ll make appointments for you in advance) and have lunch at the Capitol. The Minnesota Private College Council will host a Q&A session with public policy experts and policymakers and will provide everything you need to be a successful advocate.

The group from Augsburg will take the light rail to and from the Capitol together. There will also be an optional pizza night on Tuesday, February 28 to meet other advocates from Augsburg and get ready for your day of civic engagement.

Join CMAH for our first in person African Heritage Day on the Hill post pandemic. This event will feature remarks from lawmakers on their current 2023 legislative plans. This event will also have information for attendees on how to connect with lawmakers on policy issues they may have as well as specific information on how to find their representatives.

The theme for the 2023 African Heritage Day on the Hill is abundance. We want to ground our community partners, elected officials, and attendees in the richness of the history of the African Heritage community in Minnesota. We are celebrating increased numbers of African Heritage residents across the state, more African Heritage individuals in leadership positions across industries, more African Heritage individuals elected to public office, and the continued outpour of tangible and intangible resources towards community engagement, entrepreneurship, spiritual healing, and activism. We want to emphasize that Minnesotans of African Heritage are worthy of abundance in Minnesota across a variety of quality-of-life factors.
