Apply for Mayo Innovation Scholars Program

Applications for Augsburg’s Mayo Innovations Scholar Program are now available on the URGO website! This program is highly competitive and is primarily designed for juniors and seniors.

What is MISP?
In the process of conducting research, Mayo Clinic scientists have developed new products that may be marketable. These products are submitted to the Mayo Clinic Office of Intellectual Property (OIP) for a thorough investigation of marketability. The OIP has a significant backlog of products to be investigated. One of the backlogged products or inventions is assigned to each MISP team for investigative research and formal presentation at Mayo Clinic.

Augsburg’s team will consist of an MBA student, 3 undergraduate science students, 1 undergraduate business/economics student, 2 Augsburg faculty, and a Licensing Manager from the Mayo Clinic OIP. The team will work together to understand the science and applications of the project or innovation and analyze the market potential. Each undergraduate student on the team will receive $1,000. Teams will begin work during October and the final presentations will be in March.

As companies like Amazon and Target have switched to using flex drivers to deliver their packages we seeing packages delivered all over campus instead of to the Shipping/Receiving Department. We have been trying to fix the issue of packages being left in random places around campus. If you see a package delivered to someplace other then Shipping/Receiving please let us know or bring it in so we can get it to the correct person.

To help the flex drivers find the correct building please use the Christensen Center’s building address when ordering instead of the general campus address. Please make sure you have your full name on the order.

We’re excited to announce a new on campus meeting for anyone in recovery (of any form), curious about recovery, or have loved ones who struggle with any form of addiction. Its hosted by StepUp students, but is in no way limited to only StepUp students or people with specifically substance abuse issues. This isn’t tied to AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) or NA (Narcotics Anonymous), its our own format and is completely fluid, we’re open to suggestions of any ways to better the meeting. Our focus is on providing a place to constructively process issues and work on spiritual development, whatever that may look like. URGO Department is Hiring Health Professions Specialist

The office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity (URGO) is hiring a full-time Health Professions Specialist to coordinate the prehealth program at Augsburg University.

The Health Professions Specialist will be charged with developing, supporting, and maintaining a high-quality prehealth program as well as advising prehealth students directly. This includes providing support and advice to current students, as well as alumni, who are considering a wide range of health professions and assisting them with finding vocational fit; assisting students with the health professional school application processes, providing information on entrance exams, fee waiver applications, accommodation requests, and interviews; collecting and disseminating information regarding health professions to students, faculty, and staff; collecting and maintaining data regarding students’ acceptances to health-related professional schools; coordinating campus health professions events; and developing relationships with health professions schools and programs to benefit applicants as well as alumni working in health professions to increase shadowing, mentoring and research opportunities for prehealth students.

Minimum Qualifications
– A Master’s degree in the liberal arts or sciences is required.
3 to 5 years of experience in healthcare, higher education, or career development coaching is required.
– Knowledge and interest in the writing process; ability to evaluate and coach students’ writing from diverse educational backgrounds and with varied skill sets.
– Knowledge of the health professions.

Learn About the Louis Stokes North Star STEM Alliance

What is the Louis Stokes North Star STEM Alliance (LS-NSSA)?

Called LS-NSSA for short, this program is an initiative funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) which is intended to increase the number of Black/African-American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American, Alaska Native and Pacific Islander students receiving baccalaureate degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

The Augsburg LS-NSSA program provides stipends, research opportunities, and more to students who meet the eligibility criteria and complete a brief program application. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and you will hear back soon after applying. All students are welcome to participate in LS-NSSA events and programming but to receive program funding, a completed application is required.

How can I learn more about LS-NSSA?

To learn more, attend the following application session, or email stem@augsburg.edu with any questions. Interested students are invited to fill out the application at https://northstarstem.org/augsburg-university-applications-and-forms.

Augsburg TRIO McNair Scholars Awarded 1.3 Million From U.S. Department of Education Grant Competition

The U.S. Department of Education recently announced that Augsburg University has been awarded a 1.3 million federal Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement grant. The McNair Scholars grant is $261,885 annually for a five-year cycle (2022 through 2027). McNair participants are first-generation college students with financial need, and/or members of a group underrepresented in graduate education who have demonstrated strong academic potential and will prepare for graduate study through involvement in research and other scholarly activities.

Augsburg TRIO McNair Scholars serves an annual complement of 26 undergraduate students from program admission through graduation and tracks their progress for 10 years after graduation. Since 2007, the McNair Scholars program has provided intensive research experience and graduate school preparation to 142 students. Of those who completed the McNair program: 8 have completed a PhD and 12 are currently enrolled, 42 have completed a masters degree and 14 are currently enrolled; and 12 have completed other programs including MD, MBA, PharmD, PsyD or are currently enrolled.

The McNair Scholars Program was created by the U.S. Congress in honor of Dr. Ronald E. McNair, the astronaut and physicist who was among the first African Americans in the U.S. space program.

The Louis Stokes North Star STEM Alliance (LS-NSSA) Kickoff is an annual event for undergraduate students in the sciences to share their research projects, explore career and internship opportunities, and network with other STEM students, faculty and professionals. Many organizations do their recruiting for summer 2023 internships and entry-level positions (for spring graduates) in September and October. It might seem early but it’s a typical recruiting schedule for many organizations. In fact, employers like 3M, US Bank and Ameriprise Financial have application deadline dates in late September.

Love to Sing? Vocal Ensemble Opportunities for Students, Faculty, and Staff

Augsburg University Music announces two unique vocal ensemble opportunities open to the Augsburg community.

For students, faculty, and staff:

The Augsburg/Twin Cities Global Harmony Project is open to students, staff, faculty, and community members. Available to students for course credit, this choir assumes no music-reading ability. The core of the curriculum is shared with our community cohort, open to anyone in the greater Metro area within driving distance of a weekly, joint rehearsal. This choir receives direct instruction from culture-bearers sharing their vocal harmony traditions from many continents. Our artist-instructors, teaching via the oral method, have taught us in regional styles from Appalachia, Bosnia, Corsica, Cuba, the Republic of Georgia, Iran, Madagascar, Nigeria, Quebec, Siberia, South Africa, Sweden, Ukraine, and the traditional Black gospel churches of the United States.

For students:

For singers with a firm base in music-literacy skills, the Augsburg/Mirandola Chamber Collective course brings students into weekly side-by-side study, rehearsal, and performance collaboration with the professional chamber artists of The Mirandola Ensemble. Students enrolled in this ensemble will also perform the international repertoire at the core of the Augsburg/Twin Cities Global Harmony Project.

GEER Grant Technology Still Available for Checkout at the Library for Students and Faculty

In the fall of 2020 Augsburg received a grant from the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief Fund (GEER) to provide technology resources to students and faculty in need with a particular focus on “students and faculty who are indigenous or people of color; low-income; or disabled. Grant Funding Available for Faculty Video Captioning

Augsburg received a Governor’s Emergency Education Relief (GEER) Fund grant in 2020 and has set aside a portion of those funds to provide funding for the captioning of faculty course videos by CaptionSync. This is a temporary funding source and will be available until all funds are used. The grant ends in June of 2023.

You may caption videos you have recorded or YouTube videos you are using in your course that lack captions. The videos can be in English, Spanish, mixed Spanish/English, French or German. Share Your Skills Doing Meaningful Work: Become a Debate Coach With the MNUDL

The Minnesota Urban Debate League (MNUDL) is a program of Augsburg University. We provide academic competitive debate programming to middle and high school students.

Looking for a way to build leadership skills, mentor aspiring debaters, and earn extra money in a meaningful way? Become a debate coach with the MNUDL! We are currently seeking community coaches for 2022 Fall Semester (Sept.-December) debate programming.

Community coaches are experienced debaters who want to share their expertise with students and collaborate with teacher coaches at our area schools. Applicants who competed in Policy/Cross-Examination, Classic, Parliamentary, Lincoln Douglas, or Public Forum debate as high schoolers/college students would be highly preferred. Although we primarily practice policy debate, folks with other forms of debate experience are welcome to apply.

Applicants must be able to travel within the Twin Cities Metro for weekday practices and weekend tournaments. The MNUDL is an equal opportunity employer and we encourage candidates of all backgrounds and experiences to apply, including BIPOC candidates, LGBTQIA+ applicants, and people with disabilities. We believe debate is for everyone, and that includes our coaches! Applicants must be able to pass a background check.

Faculty/Staff Parking Permits

For faculty or staff who have not yet purchased a parking permit for the year:

At the moment, Public Safety has no supply of hanging Faculty/Staff parking tags. This does not mean we are out of available parking spaces, but it does mean we cannot process parking permit transactions until we receive a resupply of the tags because each transaction is associated with the unique code on each tag.

As a result, if you go to the Parking Services site (in the left menu on Inside Augsburg after you log in), it will report that all lots are sold out. It is not easy to reprogram that page, so please disregard that status for now and continue to park in the faculty/staff lots as needed. DPS has affirmed we will not ticket vehicles in the faculty/staff lots until we have a sufficient supply of permit tags and faculty and staff members have time to purchase their new permits. A new batch of 100 Faculty/Staff year permits will be shipped to Augsburg on September 9. Typically, it takes no more than a week for that shipment to arrive.

As soon as additional parking tags are available, we will load them into the Parking Services site and send a communication so staff and faculty can finalize their permit purchase. In the meantime, staff and faculty may email parking@augsburg.edu for a temporary, paper permit to use until the additional permit tags are available.

Augsburg University Music announces two unique vocal ensemble opportunities open to the Augsburg community.

For students, faculty, and staff:

The Augsburg/Twin Cities Global Harmony Project is open to students, staff, faculty, and community members. Available to students for course credit, this choir assumes no music-reading ability. The core of the curriculum is shared with our community cohort, open to anyone in the greater Metro area within driving distance of a weekly, joint rehearsal. This choir receives direct instruction from culture-bearers sharing their vocal harmony traditions from many continents. Our artist-instructors, teaching via the oral method, have taught us in regional styles from Appalachia, Bosnia, Corsica, Cuba, the Republic of Georgia, Iran, Madagascar, Nigeria, Quebec, Siberia, South Africa, Sweden, Ukraine, and the traditional Black gospel churches of the United States.

For students:

For singers with a firm base in music-literacy skills, the Augsburg/Mirandola Chamber Collective course brings students into weekly side-by-side study, rehearsal, and performance collaboration with the professional chamber artists of The Mirandola Ensemble. Students enrolled in this ensemble will also perform the international repertoire at the core of the Augsburg/Twin Cities Global Harmony Project.

The office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity (URGO) is hiring a full-time Health Professions Specialist to coordinate the prehealth program at Augsburg University.

The Health Professions Specialist will be charged with developing, supporting, and maintaining a high-quality prehealth program as well as advising prehealth students directly. This includes providing support and advice to current students, as well as alumni, who are considering a wide range of health professions and assisting them with finding vocational fit; assisting students with the health professional school application processes, providing information on entrance exams, fee waiver applications, accommodation requests, and interviews; collecting and disseminating information regarding health professions to students, faculty, and staff; collecting and maintaining data regarding students’ acceptances to health-related professional schools; coordinating campus health professions events; and developing relationships with health professions schools and programs to benefit applicants as well as alumni working in health professions to increase shadowing, mentoring and research opportunities for prehealth students.

Minimum Qualifications
– A Master’s degree in the liberal arts or sciences is required.
3 to 5 years of experience in healthcare, higher education, or career development coaching is required.
– Knowledge and interest in the writing process; ability to evaluate and coach students’ writing from diverse educational backgrounds and with varied skill sets.
– Knowledge of the health professions.

We are looking for editors and a graphic designer to help us with our student organization that has been around since the mid 70s. These are stipended positions $$$ and a great way to dip your toe into the wonderful world of publishing.

There are a few open positions for anyone and everyone of any skill level or experience. We do especially encourage Black, Indigenous people, and/or other people of color to apply as well as queer, trans, and/or non-binary people to also apply.

We’re excited to announce a new on campus meeting for anyone in recovery (of any form), curious about recovery, or have loved ones who struggle with any form of addiction. Its hosted by StepUp students, but is in no way limited to only StepUp students or people with specifically substance abuse issues. This isn’t tied to AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) or NA (Narcotics Anonymous), its our own format and is completely fluid, we’re open to suggestions of any ways to better the meeting. Our focus is on providing a place to constructively process issues and work on spiritual development, whatever that may look like. Kick off the new school year by attending a show this week at The Cedar, an amazing music venue located just a few blocks from campus. Any university/college student with a current student ID can get $5 tickets at the door, day of show! Note – this offer will only apply to showing up at the door time (7:00 PM) or after, not earlier than that. The two shows for which this discount applies are:

Tuesday, August 30, SIDI WACHO with DJ Miguel Vargas, Doors Open: 7:00 PM / Show: 7:30 PM. They come from Chile, France and Algeria, but they proudly claim to be home everywhere in the world. Comprised of two MCs, one trumpet, one accordionist and one percussionist, the group creates a “Cumbia-Hip Hop-Balkan” atmosphere when they play!

Thursday, September 1, MAKING MOVIES with Spaceglow, Doors Opn: 7:00 PM / Show 7:30 PM. Mixing classic rock and blues with rumba, merengue, cumbia, and mambo, Kansas City band Making Movies honors their members’ Mexican and Panamanian heritage and broadly encompasses the many sounds of the Americas. With this innovative approach, Rolling Stone said the quartet is “breaking down walls in the U.S.”

Have a quick question or comment or just want to talk to the Provost? The Provost will hold office hours three times a week for Fall Term. The times and places are as follows:
Tuesdays, 12-1 Memorial 118 (Paula’s office)
Thursdays, 11-12 Christensen Lobby
Fridays 11-12 Hagfors Lobby
These blocks of time are first-come, first served and open to all members of the community. They are intended for conversations of ten-fifteen minutes max. If you want more time or need an appointment, feel free to email provost@augsburg.edu. If you want to talk about something confidential, the Tuesday Office Hours are the best option as they will be in her office. If there is a need to cancel the Office Hours due to conflicts etc, it will be in A-mail.

Love to Sing? Vocal Ensemble Opportunities for Students, Faculty, and Staff

Augsburg University Music announces two unique vocal ensemble opportunities open to the Augsburg community.

For students, faculty, and staff:

The Augsburg/Twin Cities Global Harmony Project is open to students, staff, faculty, and community members. Available to students for course credit, this choir assumes no music-reading ability. The core of the curriculum is shared with our community cohort, open to anyone in the greater Metro area within driving distance of a weekly, joint rehearsal. This choir receives direct instruction from culture-bearers sharing their vocal harmony traditions from many continents. Our artist-instructors, teaching via the oral method, have taught us in regional styles from Appalachia, Bosnia, Corsica, Cuba, the Republic of Georgia, Iran, Madagascar, Nigeria, Quebec, Siberia, South Africa, Sweden, Ukraine, and the traditional Black gospel churches of the United States.

For students:

For singers with a firm base in music-literacy skills, the Augsburg/Mirandola Chamber Collective course brings students into weekly side-by-side study, rehearsal, and performance collaboration with the professional chamber artists of The Mirandola Ensemble. Students enrolled in this ensemble will also perform the international repertoire at the core of the Augsburg/Twin Cities Global Harmony Project.

CTL Back to School Days are Here

To kick off the new academic year IN PERSON, CTL is hosting several Back-to-School Days for Wednesday, August 24th and Thursday, August 25th (see “live” program below). The goal of the Back-to-School Days sessions is to primarily focus on “just-in-time” topics that can be immediately put to use in your upcoming Fall courses. All sessions are held in Hagfors (HC250 and HC263) and coffee and snacks will be provided!. Unless otherwise indicated, all sessions and workshops are open to and welcome all Augsburg faculty, staff, and administration.

The MNUDL is proud to present the 10th anniversary celebration of its annual fundraiser, Mayors Challenge 2022: the Great NATO Debate. We are excited to be back in person, with the beautiful American Swedish Institute as our venue.

For the past 10 years, our Mayors Challenge event has brought together education advocates from across the Twin Cities to watch our showcase debate. In this year’s debate, four debaters, who represent our partner schools across the Twin Cities, will split into two teams and debate issues related to NATO. We have also invited the ambassadors to the United States (or their official designee) from Sweden, Finland, Norway, and Iceland.
