This research study (IRB #: 2022-32-03) is designed to compare two different skill-building training programs that may help college students develop adjustment-related skills. You are eligible to participate if you are a current Augsburg undergraduate student.

If you decide to participate, you will be asked to come to our Augsburg Psychology
research laboratory for 4 sessions over the course of one month. The sessions include an initial orientation meeting and three sessions focused on one of two skills-building programs (you will be randomly assigned to one of the two–like a flip of a coin). Both programs involve mini-informational videos as well as experiential activities for you to
complete. We will also have you complete a few personality measures. You will be assigned a peer coach who will work with you as progress through the study and guide you through the study components. Each of the sessions will last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Finally, we will check in one last time 3-months after the study is over for a brief online survey.

Participants will receive up to $35 for their participation. $5 for each of the first three sessions, and $10 for both the fourth session and the 3 month follow-up. Alternatively, Augsburg University Psychology students will receive up to $25 and 4 research credits.

First, this is a great opportunity to learn about summer 2023 internships and full-time job opportunities. Additionally, this is a fantastic setting to practice networking with employers – you’ll get to practice skills such as introducing yourself, giving a firm handshake (still expected in some industries), marketing your skills, answering basic interview questions, and asking questions of the company. Each of these skills are critical for finding a job. Finally, attending the Fair would also be an opportunity for you to learn about alternative career paths that you may not have thought about previously.

The office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity (URGO) is hiring a full-time Health Professions Specialist to coordinate the prehealth program at Augsburg University.

The Health Professions Specialist will be charged with developing, supporting, and maintaining a high-quality prehealth program as well as advising prehealth students directly. This includes providing support and advice to current students, as well as alumni, who are considering a wide range of health professions and assisting them with finding vocational fit; assisting students with the health professional school application processes, providing information on entrance exams, fee waiver applications, accommodation requests, and interviews; collecting and disseminating information regarding health professions to students, faculty, and staff; collecting and maintaining data regarding students’ acceptances to health-related professional schools; coordinating campus health professions events; and developing relationships with health professions schools and programs to benefit applicants as well as alumni working in health professions to increase shadowing, mentoring and research opportunities for prehealth students.

Minimum Qualifications
– A Master’s degree in the liberal arts or sciences is required.
3 to 5 years of experience in healthcare, higher education, or career development coaching is required.
– Knowledge and interest in the writing process; ability to evaluate and coach students’ writing from diverse educational backgrounds and with varied skill sets.
– Knowledge of the health professions.

We are pleased to announce that Jenny Hanson was recently awarded the Create with VR Grant from Unity and Meta Immersive Learning. This grant positions our institution at the forefront of innovative teaching and learning by putting virtual reality (VR) technology and training in the hands of our educators and students. We will receive 13 Meta Quest 2 VR headsets for use in the classroom, both to deliver immersive instruction across a range of subjects and to train students to become the creators of tomorrow in the growing, high-wage VR industry.

As a grantee, Hanson will have access to professional development opportunities to build their knowledge of VR development and expand their capacity to create innovative and engaging learning experiences for their students.

Demand for workers with VR skills is growing rapidly across gaming, education, healthcare, automotive, architecture, engineering, and beyond. A PwC report on the economic impact of the industry estimates that, by 2030, 23 million jobs will be enhanced globally by AR and VR. Salaries in the industry also provide ample promise, averaging $158K USD annually, according to Hired’s 2022 report on the State of Software Engineers.The Create with VR grant will equip our educator community with the technology and skills to launch students on this exciting career path.

Please help me extend a warm Ausburg welcome to Summer Bordon (she/her). Summer is Augsburg’s MN GreenCorps Member through August 2023. She is a recent graduate from Grinnell College where she majored in Religious Studies. She is excited to return to Minneapolis where she grew up and to support environmental sustainability efforts at Augsburg. Her work as a MN GreenCorps Member will strengthen Augsburg University’s capacity and community resilience to impacts of climate change by advancing sustainable practices and increasing the knowledge of students, staff, faculty, and neighborhood partner organizations. She will provide outreach, education, and assistance to raise understanding and increase best practices on air pollutant reduction through green transportation promotion, explore energy conservation and renewable options for green infrastructure improvements, and champion waste reduction, recycling, and organics management strategies in our dormitories and dining services.

Summer and I will be connecting with key folks related to this work in the coming weeks. With the 2022-23 school year we have some changes to the Central Services. We are going down to a three-person staff:

With the change in staffing levels we need to change the print project lead time to 24-hours. Please be sure to call the Copy Center (612-330-1054) before submitting anything needed sooner. The smoothest process to having your print job completed in time is to submit it using the Augsburg Copy Request system, https://sites.augsburg.edu/centralservices/copy-center-costs/.

Printer support calls/paper request may now take up to 3 hours for Central Services to have someone free to come and look at it. Please call us when your put in your second to last ream of paper to avoid being completely out of paper. If you do not have a back up printer option please ask IT how to add the printer driver to your computer so if the main printer you use is waiting for service you have another option to send your documents to. The Copy Center is also an option at the link above.

As companies like Amazon and Target have switched to using flex drivers to deliver their packages we seeing packages delivered all over campus instead of to the Shipping/Receiving Department. We have been trying to fix the issue of packages being left in random places around campus. If you see a package delivered to someplace other then Shipping/Receiving please let us know or bring it in so we can get it to the correct person.

To help the flex drivers find the correct building please use the Christensen Center’s building address when ordering instead of the general campus address. Please make sure you have your full name on the order.

Community coaches are experienced debaters who want to share their expertise with students and collaborate with teacher coaches at our area schools. Applicants who competed in Policy/Cross-Examination, Classic, Parliamentary, Lincoln Douglas, or Public Forum debate as high schoolers/college students would be highly preferred. Although we primarily practice policy debate, folks with other forms of debate experience are welcome to apply.

Applicants must be able to travel within the Twin Cities Metro for weekday practices and weekend tournaments. This research study (IRB #: 2022-32-03) is designed to compare two different skill-building training programs that may help college students develop adjustment-related skills. You are eligible to participate if you are a current Augsburg undergraduate student.

If you decide to participate, you will be asked to come to our Augsburg Psychology
research laboratory for 4 sessions over the course of one month. The sessions include an initial orientation meeting and three sessions focused on one of two skills-building programs (you will be randomly assigned to one of the two–like a flip of a coin). Both programs involve mini-informational videos as well as experiential activities for you to
complete. We will also have you complete a few personality measures. You will be assigned a peer coach who will work with you as progress through the study and guide you through the study components. Each of the sessions will last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Finally, we will check in one last time 3-months after the study is over for a brief online survey.

Participants will receive up to $35 for their participation. $5 for each of the first three sessions, and $10 for both the fourth session and the 3 month follow-up. Alternatively, Augsburg University Psychology students will receive up to $25 and 4 research credits.

Emma is a Masters in Social Work student at Augsburg University, focusing on Macro Practice. Emma is working with Jenean Gilmer, Program Manager for Community-Engaged Learning, to support the Cedar-Riverside Neighborhood Food Initiative.
Imogen is a Masters in Social Work student at the University of Minnesota and is interested in mental health. She’ll be working with Natalie Jacobson, Food Systems Program Manager, on projects related to food access both on and off campus.

As companies like Amazon and Target have switched to using flex drivers to deliver their packages we seeing packages delivered all over campus instead of to the Shipping/Receiving Department. We have been trying to fix the issue of packages being left in random places around campus. If you see a package delivered to someplace other then Shipping/Receiving please let us know or bring it in so we can get it to the correct person.

To help the flex drivers find the correct building please use the Christensen Center’s building address when ordering instead of the general campus address. Please make sure you have your full name on the order.

With the 2022-23 school year we have some changes to the Central Services. We are going down to a three-person staff:

With the change in staffing levels we need to change the print project lead time to 24-hours. Please be sure to call the Copy Center (612-330-1054) before submitting anything needed sooner. The smoothest process to having your print job completed in time is to submit it using the Augsburg Copy Request system, https://sites.augsburg.edu/centralservices/copy-center-costs/.

Printer support calls/paper request may now take up to 3 hours for Central Services to have someone free to come and look at it. Please call us when your put in your second to last ream of paper to avoid being completely out of paper. If you do not have a back up printer option please ask IT how to add the printer driver to your computer so if the main printer you use is waiting for service you have another option to send your documents to. The Copy Center is also an option at the link above.

The office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity (URGO) is hiring a full-time Health Professions Specialist to coordinate the prehealth program at Augsburg University.

The Health Professions Specialist will be charged with developing, supporting, and maintaining a high-quality prehealth program as well as advising prehealth students directly. This includes providing support and advice to current students, as well as alumni, who are considering a wide range of health professions and assisting them with finding vocational fit; assisting students with the health professional school application processes, providing information on entrance exams, fee waiver applications, accommodation requests, and interviews; collecting and disseminating information regarding health professions to students, faculty, and staff; collecting and maintaining data regarding students’ acceptances to health-related professional schools; coordinating campus health professions events; and developing relationships with health professions schools and programs to benefit applicants as well as alumni working in health professions to increase shadowing, mentoring and research opportunities for prehealth students.

Minimum Qualifications
– A Master’s degree in the liberal arts or sciences is required.
3 to 5 years of experience in healthcare, higher education, or career development coaching is required.
– Knowledge and interest in the writing process; ability to evaluate and coach students’ writing from diverse educational backgrounds and with varied skill sets.
– Knowledge of the health professions.

What is the Louis Stokes North Star STEM Alliance (LS-NSSA)?

Called LS-NSSA for short, this program is an initiative funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) which is intended to increase the number of Black/African-American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American, Alaska Native and Pacific Islander students receiving baccalaureate degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

The Augsburg LS-NSSA program provides stipends, research opportunities, and more to students who meet the eligibility criteria and complete a brief program application. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and you will hear back soon after applying. All students are welcome to participate in LS-NSSA events and programming but to receive program funding, a completed application is required.

Looking for a way to build leadership skills, mentor aspiring debaters, and earn extra money in a meaningful way? Become a debate coach with the MNUDL! We are currently seeking community coaches for 2022 Fall Semester (Sept.-December) debate programming.

Community coaches are experienced debaters who want to share their expertise with students and collaborate with teacher coaches at our area schools. Applicants who competed in Policy/Cross-Examination, Classic, Parliamentary, Lincoln Douglas, or Public Forum debate as high schoolers/college students would be highly preferred. Although we primarily practice policy debate, folks with other forms of debate experience are welcome to apply.

Applicants must be able to travel within the Twin Cities Metro for weekday practices and weekend tournaments. We are entering the Jewish High Holy Day season, which runs for the entire lunar month of Tishrei this year from Monday evening, September 6 – Wednesday, September 29. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are listed on secular calendars, but there is another 9-day holiday called Sukkot, right after Yom Kippur. It is a big harvest celebration but it is not listed on calendars.
The second set of holidays, Sukkot, is likely much less observed among our Jewish students and faculty, though some students will not go to class on the first​ two​ and last​ two​ days of Sukkot (dates below).
For college students, being away from home for these holidays can highlight the homesickness and the yearning to be in the nest, and for some, quite the opposite. If you celebrate Christmas, imagine staying on campus while most students return home for the holiday. If you celebrate Ramadan, this season is similar to that month of observance. The University of Minnesota Hillel will welcome students and ​can be reached through http://www.mnhillel.org.
The greeting for this season is, “Sha-NAH to-VAH”. meaning Happy New Year.
How to be an ally: We encourage you to have conversations with your Jewish students and colleagues about their observances. ​If you are aware that students or colleagues are Jewish, it would likely be welcomed to ask them how they observe the holidays and what they mean to them. Since ​Jewish students​ and colleagues​ may or may not self-identify​, ​you may want to​ announce an invitation ​to ​”​any Jewish students/faculty​”​ to talk with you about what this next month is for them, vis a vis classes or being far (or near) family. ​To further be an ally you could also move important meetings or events away from Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
