New Staff Position: Program Associate, Career Services and Off-Campus Study

Summary of Position: The Program Associate for Career Services and Off-Campus Study manages administrative operations for internships and events through the Strommen Center for Meaningful Work and for off-campus study programs through the Center for Global Education and Experience (CGEE). The Program Associate will work directly with students to prepare them for their learning experiences. The Strommen Center and CGEE are two of Augsburg’s four Centers of Commitment, dedicated to living out the university’s educational mission.

Primary Responsibilities

Strommen Center 0.5 FTE

– Coordinate and manage logistics for on-campus recruiting events i.e. employer info sessions and career fairs. Organize the annual recruiting calendar, including deadlines and processes.
– Oversee Augsburg’s internship program, tracking and data. Advise students completing zero-credit internships from registration through transcription.
– Support students seeking credit-bearing internships and the faculty who supervise them.
– Maintain employer database and recruiting system (currently Handshake.)
– Develop communication materials for employers including website content.
– Monitor the Strommen Center departmental email accounts and ensure that inquiries are responded to in a timely.

CGEE 0.5 FTE

– Review students’ post-acceptance documents, verifying that they are submitted and are valid in CGEE’s application system (Terra Dotta).
– Coordinate and manage CGEE course offerings, record generation for non-Augsburg students, student registration, grade reports, and other course-related and records-related administrative activities.
– Create student accounts for international and domestic exchange students who come to Augsburg.
– Liaise with Health and Safety Coordinator, Disability Services, and other student services departments at Augsburg and at non-Augsburg students’ home institutions.
– Monitor host-country visa regulations for US and non-US citizens; coordinate visa processing.
– Design, deliver, and coordinate pre-departure materials and orientation sessions for CGEE programs in conjunction with program staff.

Additional Responsibilities

– Represent the Strommen Center or CGEE at campus events like SOAR and other student information sessions.
– Other relevant duties as assigned.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

– Typical work environment is in an office.
– Regular computer and phone use.
– Sedentary work for long periods of time.
– Lifting and carrying materials up to ten pounds for events or presentations.

It is important that your syllabus is reflected in your gradebook so that students have a clear understanding of expectations and grading. The following are some suggestions for syllabus/gradebook alignment.

– Use the Augsburg University Syllabus Template as a model. You will find this template located in “Faculty Moodle Resources” under the “Faculty/Staff Help” tab. This template includes important university policies and an example of how your syllabus shows the percentage of points assigned to each graded item.

– The default gradebook setup is “Natural” (points-defined assessment with or without weights). Here is the recommended gradebook set up and how to add an activity like a Moodle Assignment, Forum, Quiz, or Attendance activity.

We’ll have easy-care houseplants, including some lush begonias and peperomias, aroids, cacti and succulents, and even a few carnivorous pitcher plants! We’ll also have a select number of mature specimens for sale for those houseplant afficionados. Stocks of the most desirable species are limited, so get there early!

Cash or PayPal accepted. Plant prices start at $5. Funds raised directly support greenhouse operations and the Augsburg chapter of the TriBeta Biology Honors Society.

Seeing Things Whole Launches Community Practice Cohort

This fall, The Reell Office of Seeing Things Whole is launching our first Community Practice Cohort to support the professional development of three leaders by advancing their strategic thinking toward action.

Seeing Things Whole is a disciplined process that embraces the organization’s relationships to the larger world, cultivating whole leaders and thriving organizations to positively impact the common good. Working closely with staff and cohort members, participants will receive customized coaching, develop mutually supportive relationships, and learn to apply the Seeing Things Whole framework to real-life problems. Over the course of three months, cohort members will identify and dig into a particular workplace challenge, gaining insights and perspective to see the whole of their situation and formulate an effective path forward.

Participants will:
– Attend three Whole Leader Roundtable sessions throughout fall 2023
– Work with fellow cohort members and staff to articulate and make progress on a leadership challenge
– Present the challenge to a Whole Leader Roundtable and receive focused feedback and insight
– Share progress and provide accountability within the Community of Practice Cohort
– Participate in structured reflection throughout the experience
– Leadership challenges can encompass a wide range of issues, such as how to grow a program that requires many collaborators, how to share power within hierarchical organizational structures, or how to sustain motivation and resilience in a challenging leadership environment.

This opportunity is ideal for any individual looking to develop a deeper, more positive connection between their values and leadership action.

Interested in Research and Graduate School? Apply to the TRIO McNair Scholars Program

Augsburg’s TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting students for Fall 2023 admission. Eligible applicants will be at Junior status by the end of Spring 2024 and available to conduct full-time research Summer 2024. Students from all majors are welcome to apply, though preference is given to applicants that are interested in pursuing a doctoral (Ph.D.) degree. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until all participant slots are filled.

The TRIO McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through coursework, academic advising, workshops, and involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. The program also assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($6000) with an Augsburg faculty member during Summer of 2024.

The McNair Scholars Program is federally-funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, applicants must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college or university) AND low-income AND/OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents and maintain at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA (3.0+ preferred). Unsure if you qualify? Paid Summer Program to Study Public Policy and International Affairs

The purpose of the Junior Summer Institute (JSI) Fellowship is to prepare students to obtain a Master’s or joint degree, in public policy, public administration, international affairs, or a related field. Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Junior Summer Institute is an intensive seven-week summer program that focuses on preparing students for careers as policy professionals, public administrators and other leadership roles in public service. The program was started to address the lack of diversity across the spectrum of professional public service, including government, nonprofits, public policy institutions, and international organizations.

Selected participants spend the summer at one of seven participating universities (University of Minnesota, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, Princeton, Harvard, University of Washington, or University of Michigan) where they take courses, learn from top leaders in the field and build their professional skills. Students must have junior or senior status and be planning to graduate between December 2024 and August 2025. There is no cost to attend and participants receive a stipend.

Applications for Augsburg’s Mayo Innovations Scholar Program are now available on the URGO website! This program is highly competitive and is primarily designed for juniors and seniors.

What is MISP?
In the process of conducting research, Mayo Clinic scientists have developed new products that may be marketable. These products are submitted to the Mayo Clinic Office of Intellectual Property (OIP) for a thorough investigation of marketability. The OIP has a significant backlog of products to be investigated. One of the backlogged products or inventions is assigned to each MISP team for investigative research and formal presentation at Mayo Clinic.

Augsburg’s team will consist of an MBA student, 2-3 undergraduate science students, 1-2 undergraduate business/economics student, 2 Augsburg faculty, and a Licensing Manager from the Mayo Clinic OIP. The team will work together to understand the science and applications of the project or innovation and analyze the market potential. Each undergraduate student on the team will receive $1,500. Teams will begin work during October and the final presentations will be in March.

CLASS and Lindell Library invite you to a book discussion for “Disability Visibility: First-Person Stories from the 21st Century” edited by Alice Wong. “This anthology gives a glimpse into the rich complexity of the disabled experience, highlighting the passions, talents, and everyday lives of this community.”

We’ll discuss narratives from Part 2: “Becoming” on Thursday, October 5, 2023, 4:00-5:00 pm in Lindell Library, Room 301. We welcome you (students, faculty, and staff) to this discussion regardless of how much of the book you read! Snacks will be provided. “We Are Riverside” Cultural Workshops at Brian Coyle Center: Somali, Oromo and Native American

Join Pillsbury United Communities at the Brian Coyle Center for their “We Are Riverside” series of cultural immersion workshops planned in partnership with neighborhood organizations and businesses. These events uplift the cultures of Cedar-Riverside to build bridges of understanding across our community.

Workshops are four hours on Saturday afternoons leading up to the Cedar-Riverside Multicultural Dinner on Thursday, September 21st–mark your calendars, this is a much-loved community gathering with great food from restaurants across the neighborhood, performances from different cultural groups, translators to help neighbors connect across language barriers and a bunch of other fun stuff!

Petition to Keep Our Streets MPLS the Organizer of Open Streets MPLS

After 12 years of working on this program, we believe we can bring the best version of Open Streets Minneapolis to the City of Minneapolis and other cities in Minnesota, and we will be applying to become the organizer in 2024.

It is not an overstatement to attribute the success of Open Streets Minneapolis directly to us, Our Streets MPLS, as the organizer. We founded this event and have fostered years of community engagement and relationships to make it the success that it is. We are steadfast in the belief that we remain the event series organizers to continue the level of engagement and success of Open Streets Minneapolis.

Connecting marginalized communities to opportunities to engage in dialogue about walking, biking, and rolling has always been at the forefront of our mission and the core of the events we host. The proposal for Open Streets Minneapolis 2024 aims to fund payroll, equipment, communication, and professional fees to feature local talent, insurance, software, supplies, and printing costs so that we can elevate the richness and diversity of these communities, and highlight the incredible potential for each of these communities to thrive.

We take great care in choosing areas that have been most impacted by historically harmful transportation decisions. We prioritize communities that might not be able to afford to host an event like Open Streets Minneapolis, and we believe the City of Minneapolis should share this priority.

Organized as part of the public program for the inaugural 2023-2024 Soomaal House Archive Fellowship.

The public is invited to the concluding presentation by Soomaal House Archive Fellows-in-residence SITAAD (Leyla Degan and Naima Hassan). Over the course of the residency, the fellows have developed the first iteration of their project Transmigrating Cassettes in various settings, including Milan, Amsterdam, New York City, New Jersey, and Minneapolis. In the Twin Cities, the fellows have benefited from a rich program delivered by Soomaal House of Art, Immigration History Research Center Archives (IHRCA), and The Liberal Arts Engagement Hub.

The presentation will delve into the fellows’ sonic-research methodology and their activation of Augustus F. Sherman’s Somali Photographs. The fellows will provide a walk-through of their archival research visits to Ellis Island, New York Public Library, Drew University (GCAH) and their findings. The presentation will conclude with a sonic offering.

The presentation will include light refreshments.

We’re so excited to welcome Dr. Iva Patel as our speaker for the first of seven Interfaith Forums planned by the Interfaith Institute this year! She will be presenting on Hindu approaches to interfaith relationships. She is on the faculty of Augsburg University. She is a scholar, translator, and instructor of Asian religious literature with specialization in literary cultures of Indian religious traditions.

We’re honored to have her join us at 7 pm, Thursday, September 14, Oren Gateway Center, OGC 114. Open to everyone on our campus community. Look for more forums coming up throughout this semester!

We’ll discuss narratives from Part 2: “Becoming” on Thursday, October 5, 2023, 4:00-5:00 pm in Lindell Library, Room 301. Clinical Trial Opportunity for Healthy Adults

Help Advance Research on Neurodegenerative Disorders

What is the goal of the study?
The purpose of this study is to find out whether insulin, a drug approved by the FDA for
the treatment of diabetes mellitus, reaches the brain and spinal cord when delivered as a
nasal spray (intranasally).

What happens in the study?
· There will be 3 in-person visits (lasting 2-4 hours) and one phone call
· At Visit 2, you will receive one dose of intranasal insulin and undergo a lumbar
puncture (spinal tap).

Paid Summer Program to Study Public Policy and International Affairs

The purpose of the Junior Summer Institute (JSI) Fellowship is to prepare students to obtain a Master’s or joint degree, in public policy, public administration, international affairs, or a related field. Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Junior Summer Institute is an intensive seven-week summer program that focuses on preparing students for careers as policy professionals, public administrators and other leadership roles in public service. The program was started to address the lack of diversity across the spectrum of professional public service, including government, nonprofits, public policy institutions, and international organizations.

Selected participants spend the summer at one of seven participating universities (University of Minnesota, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, Princeton, Harvard, University of Washington, or University of Michigan) where they take courses, learn from top leaders in the field and build their professional skills. Students must have junior or senior status and be planning to graduate between December 2024 and August 2025. There is no cost to attend and participants receive a stipend.

Applications for Augsburg’s Mayo Innovations Scholar Program are now available on the URGO website! This program is highly competitive and is primarily designed for juniors and seniors.

What is MISP?
In the process of conducting research, Mayo Clinic scientists have developed new products that may be marketable. These products are submitted to the Mayo Clinic Office of Intellectual Property (OIP) for a thorough investigation of marketability. The OIP has a significant backlog of products to be investigated. One of the backlogged products or inventions is assigned to each MISP team for investigative research and formal presentation at Mayo Clinic.

Augsburg’s team will consist of an MBA student, 2-3 undergraduate science students, 1-2 undergraduate business/economics student, 2 Augsburg faculty, and a Licensing Manager from the Mayo Clinic OIP. The team will work together to understand the science and applications of the project or innovation and analyze the market potential. Each undergraduate student on the team will receive $1,500. Teams will begin work during October and the final presentations will be in March.

We’re so excited to welcome Dr. Iva Patel as our speaker for the first of seven Interfaith Forums planned by the Interfaith Institute this year! She will be presenting on Hindu approaches to interfaith relationships. She is on the faculty of Augsburg University. She is a scholar, translator, and instructor of Asian religious literature with specialization in literary cultures of Indian religious traditions. We’re honored to have her join us at 7 pm, Thursday, September 14, Oren Gateway Center, OGC 114. Open to everyone on our campus community. Look for more forums coming up throughout this semester!

Does Youth Political Activism Work in Southern Africa?

The Augsburg community is invited to join CGEE in welcoming Pinias Kashedi, Global Faculty from Namibia, on campus! He will be hosting a talk about the marginalization of youth in Southern Africa, titled, “Education Capture and Youth Marginalization in Namibia.” A brief description is below:

In 2023, economic opportunities for young people in Namibia are drying up. The country is facing nearly 90,000 unemployed graduates, many with advanced educational qualifications, in a nation with a total population of approximately 2.5 million. With one of the highest unemployment rates in Africa, there is a prevailing belief among Namibian youth that political activism does not yield results.

Colonial and social injustices are a factor to these contemporary issues, but also an inherited education system which perpetuates economic and social marginalization of young people. What measures, if any, is the Namibian government undertaking to address these pressing concerns? Mr. Kashedi will expound upon these matters from his point of view as a Namibian citizen who has worked with youth for many years, during this captivating “GlobalEd” talk right here at Augsburg University.

We are in the process of hiring an entirely new board for the 2023-2024 academic year! We are looking for Lead, Managing, and Assistant Editors, as well as an Art Director/Layout Editor. Training will be provided by our outgoing lead editors! Thó Wiŋ Magazine (previously Murphy Square Quarterly) has been around since the 1970s and we are so excited to be passing the torch to a new group Augsburg community members. These are stipend positions and a great way to dip your toe into the wonderful world of publishing!

There are a few open positions for anyone and everyone of any skill level or experience. We do especially encourage BIPOC, AAPI, queer, trans, non-binary, women, and/or underclassmen to apply.

Interested in Research and Graduate School? Apply to the TRIO McNair Scholars Program

Augsburg’s TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting students for Fall 2023 admission. Eligible applicants will be at Junior status by the end of Spring 2024 and available to conduct full-time research Summer 2024. Students from all majors are welcome to apply, though preference is given to applicants that are interested in pursuing a doctoral (Ph.D.) degree. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until all participant slots are filled.

The TRIO McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through coursework, academic advising, workshops, and involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. The program also assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($6000) with an Augsburg faculty member during Summer of 2024.

The McNair Scholars Program is federally-funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, applicants must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college or university) AND low-income AND/OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents and maintain at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA (3.0+ preferred). Unsure if you qualify? Mentors in STEM Peer Mentoring can play a pivotal role in establishing the success of beginning STEM students. If you’re a rising Junior or Senior in a STEM major, enjoy being a leader and/or have lots of advice & resources to share — this is for you!! (Transfer students are also welcome!)

Rosh Hashanah begins at sundown on Friday, September 15 and lasts through sundown Sunday, September 17. Yom Kippur begins at sundown on Sunday, September 24 and lasts until Monday night, September 25. Lesser known holidays Sukkot, Shmini Atzeret, and Simchat Torah are also part of this holiday season. Sukkot begins at sundown on Friday, September 29 and the non-work holiday lasts until sundown on Sunday, October 1. Sukkot continues (as a working holiday) until sundown on Friday, October 6. Shmini Atzeret begins that same night, Friday, October 6, and the following night begins Simchat Torah, which lasts until sundown on Sunday, October 8, both as non-work holidays. During these days, please be thoughtful of those who observe them by not scheduling meetings, conference calls, or deadlines. For teachers, please do not schedule tests, presentations, or other mandatory activities. And remember that many Jewish households host family and/or other guests for these holidays. For those who celebrate Christmas, imagine if everyone wanted something from you between the mornings of December 24th and December 26th while you had multiple things cooking, preparations to be in services, and family and friends coming over. Be thoughtful, kind, and inclusive. And greetings: “Happy New Year” is appropriate to say on Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. “Have an easy/meaningful fast” is appropriate to say on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement when Jews traditionally fast for 25 hours. September 17 is Constitution Day

Constitution Day is an American federal observance that recognizes the adoption of the United States Constitution and those who have become U.S. citizens. It is celebrated on September 17, the day the U.S. Constitutional Convention signed the Constitution in 1787 in Philadelphia.

One of the key responsibilities of citizenship is voting. This year local elections will be held on November 7 and Augsburg has made election day a holiday during which classes are canceled so that all eligible voters have time to vote. The office of the Minnesota Secretary of State has sample ballots and information about voting. If you have questions feel free to reach out to the Sabo Center staff, we’d love to help.

Apply for Mayo Innovation Scholars Program

Applications for Augsburg’s Mayo Innovations Scholar Program are now available on the URGO website! This program is highly competitive and is primarily designed for juniors and seniors.

What is MISP?
In the process of conducting research, Mayo Clinic scientists have developed new products that may be marketable. These products are submitted to the Mayo Clinic Office of Intellectual Property (OIP) for a thorough investigation of marketability. The OIP has a significant backlog of products to be investigated. One of the backlogged products or inventions is assigned to each MISP team for investigative research and formal presentation at Mayo Clinic.

Augsburg’s team will consist of an MBA student, 2-3 undergraduate science students, 1-2 undergraduate business/economics student, 2 Augsburg faculty, and a Licensing Manager from the Mayo Clinic OIP. The team will work together to understand the science and applications of the project or innovation and analyze the market potential. Each undergraduate student on the team will receive $1,500. Teams will begin work during October and the final presentations will be in March.

Your permit status will be verified electronically based on your license plate number upon entry and exit from Augsburg lots. DPS is still providing hang tags as a backup method during the initial weeks of the semester, but they will not be used after the fall term.

DON’T GET TICKETED!
MPS, our parking vendor, will begin enforcement through the new system on September 11, 2023. The fine for a parking violation is $35 for a previously registered vehicle and $52 for an unregistered vehicle.

Login to the MPS SentryLink website via the Parking Services link on Inside Augsburg using your Augsburg email address to purchase a parking permit, add or edit vehicle information, or pay a parking violation.

Augsburg students, faculty, and staff are invited to the 2023 Batalden Seminar in Applied Ethics. Join us on October 25, 2023, from 10–11 a.m. in Hoversten Chapel or via Zoom for this free public event on interfaith responses to trauma. 

Globally, over 50% of persons experience some sort of trauma during their lifetime. At this year’s Batalden Seminar, three panelists will share resources from their specific religious traditions (Hinduism, Judaism, and Islam) that respond to trauma and foster resilience. The faculty panelists include Assistant Professor Iva Patel, Assistant Professor Shayna Sheinfeld, and Professor Najeeba Syeed, El-Hibri Endowed Chair. 

The Batalden Faculty Scholar Program in Applied Ethics strengthens the infusion of ethics and values into our campus community, so that the skills of ethical reasoning and critical reflection are hallmarks of Augsburg’s students, staff, faculty, and alumni.

Do you think getting art published should be accessible to anyone and everyone in the Augsburg community? If you agree, you’ll be a great addition to the Thó Wiŋ Magazine editorial board!

We are in the process of hiring an entirely new board for the 2023-2024 academic year! We are looking for Lead, Managing, and Assistant Editors, as well as an Art Director/Layout Editor. Training will be provided by our outgoing lead editors! Thó Wiŋ Magazine (previously Murphy Square Quarterly) has been around since the 1970s and we are so excited to be passing the torch to a new group Augsburg community members. These are stipend positions and a great way to dip your toe into the wonderful world of publishing!

There are a few open positions for anyone and everyone of any skill level or experience. We do especially encourage BIPOC, AAPI, queer, trans, non-binary, women, and/or underclassmen to apply.

The Augsburg community is invited to join CGEE in welcoming Pinias Kashedi, Global Faculty from Namibia, on campus! He will be hosting a talk about the marginalization of youth in Southern Africa, titled, “Education Capture and Youth Marginalization in Namibia.” A brief description is below:

In 2023, economic opportunities for young people in Namibia are drying up. The country is facing nearly 90,000 unemployed graduates, many with advanced educational qualifications, in a nation with a total population of approximately 2.5 million. With one of the highest unemployment rates in Africa, there is a prevailing belief among Namibian youth that political activism does not yield results.

Colonial and social injustices are a factor to these contemporary issues, but also an inherited education system which perpetuates economic and social marginalization of young people. What measures, if any, is the Namibian government undertaking to address these pressing concerns? Mr. Kashedi will expound upon these matters from his point of view as a Namibian citizen who has worked with youth for many years, during this captivating “GlobalEd” talk right here at Augsburg University.
