One Bedroom Apartment for Rent in St. Anthony Park $890/month

submitted by gilmerje@augsburg.edu

One Bedroom Apartment for Rent in St. Anthony Park $890/month

Looking for a cool place to live? This apartment is in a turn of the century house that was made into a 4-plex in the 1930s. It’s a quiet building with hardwood floors, great southern exposure, and a nice backyard patio. Near the intersection of Como and Raymond in Saint Paul, it is less than a ten minute drive to Cedar-Riverside and less than a block from the #3 bus line. The neighborhood is super cute and bougie and there is a nice park across the street.

If you’d like to know more about the place, check out the Craig’s List ad below or get in touch with Jenean Gilmer at gilmerje@augsburg.edu.

Attention Kia and Hyundai Owners

submitted by bierbaub@augsburg.edu

Attention Hyundai and Kia owners –

Augsburg has experienced a number of attempted and completed auto thefts on our campus. Almost all of these incidents involved either Kia or Hyundai vehicles. This is consistent with a trend that has been occurring within the City of Minneapolis as well as across the country. We strongly encourage owners of these makes of vehicles to take extra precautions. Use of a steering wheel lock or other anti- theft device is recommended. Such devices are available on-
line and at many auto part stores. We also suggest Hyundai and Kia owners check with their dealerships to see if there are any recalls or software upgrades available for their vehicle.

The incidents that have occurred on campus and in the surrounding community are under investigation by the Minneapolis Police. Augsburg Department of Public Safety continues to patrol the campus to both deter and detect criminal and/or suspicious activity. We urge anyone who observes suspicious behavior to contact us through Dispatch at 612-330-1717.

WCCO Features “We Are Water” Exhibit in OGC

submitted by farrisr@augsburg.edu

Last week, WCCO featured the traveling “We Are Water MN” exhibit that is currently on display in Oren Gateway Center lobby. This interactive exhibit is a collaboration between six state partners and is hosted at Augsburg by the Somali Museum of Minnesota. WCCO came to campus to hear about how water issues impact local communities by interviewing Osman Ali, founder and executive director of the Somali Museum of Minnesota, and Britt Gangeness, program administrator at the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. Both individuals shared their perspectives on how water connects people, communities, and countries across the world.

“We Are Water MN” will be on display until August 14—stop by OGC to check it out!

Climate Grief to Joy Healing Circle on Thursday July 13, 5-8 p.m.

submitted by mcdaniem@augsburg.edu

Climate Grief to Joy Healing Circle on Thursday July 13th from 5-8pm in the Augsburg Community Garden.

Rooted in Indigenous thought, and held as small group workshops, Healing Circles provide a vessel for participants to name, hold, and release intense emotions around climate change, while also contextualizing how we ended up here. Unprocessed grief can limit access to the present moment. We are often either stuck in the past or jumping ahead to the future.

Through cycles of music and poetry, participants engage in an outdoor, moving journey that engages the senses and prompts a path to our individual and collective healing, unlocking the potential to shift the stories we tell and reimagine the future we are building. All are welcome, registration for this event is required, as space is limited.

Click on the link below to register and for more information on the event. This Healing Circle is sponsored by Environmental Sustainability at Augsburg and is supported by Oyate Hotanin in collaboration with musical duo Buffalo Weavers and Change Narrative, a climate programming producer —in a year-long climate action-driven project, Society of Mother Earth (S.O.M.E.).

Augsburg Statement on Supreme Court Ruling on Race-Conscious Admissions

submitted by farrisr@augsburg.edu

Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in two cases involving Harvard and the University of North Carolina that the use of race as a factor in college admissions is unconstitutional.

The Augsburg community is committed to intentional diversity in our life and work. This commitment aligns with our use of holistic application review and our direct admissions approach, launched in fall 2022. Because direct admissions does not consider race as a factor, Augsburg’s current admissions processes are unlikely to be affected by the SFFA v. Harvard/UNC ruling—despite potentially far-reaching impacts for higher education. Augsburg’s experience with direct admissions may serve as a useful case study on alternative strategies to lower barriers for historically underrepresented and marginalized student populations following this decision.

Remembering Inez Schwarzkopf ’59

submitted by bergc2@augsburg.edu

Augsburg remembers with gratitude the life of Regent Emerita Inez (Olson) Schwarzkopf ’59, who passed away on June 24.

Inez’s gifts of leadership, service, and faith profoundly shaped Augsburg throughout a special lifelong connection to our community. Her father, Iver Olson ’35, taught Norwegian and theology at Augsburg for over 20 years. Inez and all of her siblings followed in his footsteps to Augsburg, where she graduated cum laude in English and served as editor of the yearbook. She went on to pursue a master’s degree at the University of Minnesota and built a freelance career in writing and editing before moving into adult education, communication, organizational development, and marketing for the American Lutheran Church and later the ELCA. Along the way she raised four children and nurtured a passion for travel. She accomplished the remarkable feat of visiting all seven continents in her lifetime.

Throughout her life, Inez remained a steadfast and faithful friend to Augsburg. She served on the Board of Regents from 1982–90 and again from 1992–1998, and was a key player in planning for and establishing the Bernhard Christensen Endowment. She also established the Inez Olson Schwarzkopf Scholarship to support undergraduate students majoring in English. In recognition of her many contributions to Augsburg, she received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1991.

Inez is survived by her husband, Lyall Schwarzkopf; four children; and six grandchildren. As many of you know, Inez’s daughter Ilse Rolf ’93 and granddaughter Nissa Rolf are valued colleagues in our Institutional Advancement department. A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 7, at 11:00 a.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. Additional service and visitation details can be found in her full obituary.

Please join me in holding all of Inez’s family and friends in prayer as we grieve her loss and celebrate her life.

Sincerely,
Paul Pribbenow
President

Because direct admissions does not consider race as a factor, Augsburg’s current admissions processes are unlikely to be affected by the SFFA v. Harvard/UNC ruling—despite potentially far-reaching impacts for higher education. Augsburg’s experience with direct admissions may serve as a useful case study on alternative strategies to lower barriers for historically underrepresented and marginalized student populations following this decision.

Augsburg Statement on Yesterday’s Supreme Court Ruling

submitted by farrisr@augsburg.edu

Yesterday, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in two cases involving Harvard and the University of North Carolina that the use of race as a factor in college admissions was unconstitutional.
