Following the end of the federal public health emergency for COVID-19, Augsburg no longer requires proof of COVID-19 vaccination for students or employees, effective June 1. While no longer required, the university strongly recommends that everyone stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccines for their age group.
Students, faculty, and staff should also continue to complete the COVID-19 self-reporting form following a positive COVID-19 test or exposure to receive information and timelines for testing, isolation, and masking.
More information, including the self-reporting form, is available on the Outbreak Planning website.

June 3: Support Girls and Gender Expansive Youth in Financial Literacy Leadership Debates
Are you a woman or gender expansive person employed or studying in the field of finance?
The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, serves middle and high school students in the Twin Cities. We are looking for leaders to join us as volunteer debate judges for our Financial Literacy Leadership Debates program.
In this program, girls and gender expansive youth learn about core financial literacy subjects through the fun, engaging, and competitive vehicle of debate. The topic this year involves the advantages and disadvantages of banking at a large national bank versus a local credit union.
No debate experience is needed – we will train you. Attend our luncheon at Augsburg University, judge debates, and share your story!
The debate event will take place on June 3rd from 9:30 AM-2:30 PM here on Augsburg University’s campus. Thank you for your consideration in joining us!

This summer Augsburg will again host the annual Vocation of Lutheran High Education Conference. Each year, members of Lutheran colleges and universities gather to explore the distinctive roles we play in higher education. The theme of the 2023 conference “So that we (faculty, staff, and administrators), too, may flourish” takes its name from Rooted and Open, where NECU institutions commit to serving students who are “called and empowered to serve the neighbor so that all may flourish.” In a time of staff and faculty burnout, resignations, and uneven degrees of belonging, we will consider how we educators, too, may flourish in mind, body and spirit.
Highlights include a keynote address by Jonathan Malesic, author of The End of Burnout: Why Work Drains Us and How to Build Better Lives; plenary sessions led by Deanna Thompson, Rev. Lamont Wells (NECU Executive Director), Krista Hughes, Monica Smith, Marc Jerry, and Jeremy Myers; small group conversations and workshops on the flourishing of faculty, administrators and staff; and guided VOCARE spiritual practices, led by Rev. Dr. Charlene Rachuy Cox.
The conference begins at 5:00 pm on Monday, July 10 and ends at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, July 12.
You may view the preliminary agenda and register for the conference at https://www.augsburg.edu/campusministry/2023/03/30/2023-vocation-of-lutheran-higher-education-conference-registration/
The registration fee is waived for Augsburg participants and meals (lunch and dinner) are provided to Augsburg participants free of charge. The deadline for registration is Friday, June 23. If you have questions about registration, please contact Janice Dames (x1732 or dames@augsburg.edu). Late Thursday afternoon (May 18, 2023) the motor for the Memorial elevator burnt out rendering the elevator inoperable. Our elevator repair vendor has been out to look at the elevator and they have ordered a replacement motor, but there is currently no timeline for when the repairs will be completed.
In the meantime, the 2nd floor of Memorial is accessible via the Anderson Music Hall skyway (accessible from the Anderson Music Hall elevator). The 3rd floor will only be accessible via the stairs in Memorial until the elevator is repaired – please plan accordingly. If you need to move meetings to a more accessible space, please contact University Events for assistance in finding accessible rooms and reserving the space(s).

The Minnesota Indian Teacher Training Program (MITTP) works collaboratively with Minneapolis Public Schools and St. Paul Public Schools while supporting American Indian students working toward degrees in education at Augsburg. The program is designed to increase the number of licensed American Indian teachers serving Minnesota Public and Tribal School Systems. We do this by providing scholarship funding that can be up to $15,000 for an academic year depending on the number of applications we receive. We may also provide professional development opportunities like attending the Minnesota Indian Education Association (MIEA) Conference.

The Playwrights’ Center (Augsburg CGEE partner) recently held the PlayLabs Festival, one of the nation’s most comprehensive new play festivals. If you want to experience the festival for yourself, you can stream filmed readings of the three featured plays now:
That Must Be the Entrance to Heaven
by Franky D. Gonzalez
Glory. Survival. Legacy. Citizenship. Four Latino boxers all chase a world title to achieve their personal versions of heaven. But to get there, they must battle each other, their own battered bodies, society, and the universe itself. All four men walk the line between life and death in this collision of combat and cosmos.
A Walless Church: The Black Woman’s Guide To Making God
by AriDy Nox
A Walless Church is a Living Room play/ritual/lecture where three godlings create God, interweaving between narrator and protagonist and teacher and student and priestess and witness and god and God recklessly. Oru, the seasoned expert, Nona, the perfectionist, and Mo, the newbie. While Oru, Nona, and Mo struggle to create a God worthy of Creation, they also struggle with the various black women they haphazardly embody, all of whom are struggling to see the God within themselves. But our godlings are persistent and they refuse to fail. (At least, not without a fight.)
Stockade
by Andrew Rosendorf
Five years after the end of WWII, a group of gay soldiers gather for a reunion of sorts on Fire Island—and are met by an outsider with a surprise that will cause them to question whether history is best left in the past. At a time when “security risk” was government code for “homosexual,” it will take courage to step out of the shadows as each confronts their present and future.
You can also stream the festival showcase and a conversation with the featured playwrights, all on the Playwrights’ Center website May 15-21!

Paid Opportunity: Seeking Judges for the East African Debate League, $55/Tournament
The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide academic competitive debate programming to middle and high school students. We have an upcoming opportunity for folks who want to earn extra money while doing good for the community.
In our East African Debate program, middle and high school students from the East African community debate a topic that is central to their identity. This year, the topic is about international investment in East Africa. What are the benefits? What are the drawbacks? Students learn how to debate multiple angles of the issue. Please note that these debates are held fully in English, and no previous debate experience is required to judge.
We are seeking judges to volunteer in person on weeknights in schools across the Twin Cities, paid $55 per tournament. The final East African Debate tournaments will be held on Tuesday, May 23rd at Andersen United Community School. Please sign up on this date using this calendar to initiate the signup process!

The debate event will take place on June 3rd from 9:30 AM-2:30 PM.
