Augsburg’s annual Zyzzogeton Research Symposium showcases the work of over 80 undergraduate researchers in all academic disciplines and will take place on Tuesday, April 12, 2022. Students who have conducted research over the course of the last year and would like to present a poster should register at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) by March 1 (a mentor-approved abstract is required to register). Students planning to present at Zyzzogeton are encouraged to attend the Postermaking Workshop on Tuesday, February 15, 6:30 – 8:00pm. Please RSVP when you register.

Card Access Issues and LED Lighting Upgrades

Card access doors at the main entrance to the Kennedy Center and the dock entrance to Christensen Center have not been responding properly to the use of key fobs due to a hardware issue. The Department of Public Safety is working with our vendors to acquire and install new hardware to address these issues as soon as possible. Until the door hardware can be replaced, other arrangements will be in place to provide continued access to these areas.

LED lighting upgrades continue. Installers are currently working in the Lindell Library. For additional Facilities Management updates, follow the link provided.

Students are able to use 3 hours a week; 3 one hour sessions or 6 thirty-minute sessions. You can access TutorMe through any of your Moodle classes. At the top left of your screen there is an orange tab to see the side panel of resources. As you scroll down, you will see the “Augsburg Tools” section and underneath is the link to TutorMe. Free Trip to Holocaust Museum – Due February 21

The MINNE Holocaust Fellows program selects college students to participate in a fully-paid, one-day trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. to acquire a more in-depth knowledge of the Holocaust. Fellows tour the permanent exhibits and featured exhibits, as well as meet with a museum representative. Awards come through the MINNE Fund of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, who has chosen Augsburg to be one of the select universities to participate in the program.

The 2022 trip will take place on April 5, 2022. Applications are due on February 21, 2022 and can be found at https://jewishminneapolis.org/minne/. If you would like to learn more about the program or would like advising on the application, please contact the URGO office at urgo@augsburg.edu.

Assessment Day 2022 is scheduled for Tuesday, February 22nd from 11am – 1pm. We will be on a convocation schedule for these constructive faculty workshops and to allow time for departments to engage with students for learning assessment activities. Mark your calendars and rally your department for the two following workshop sessions!

11am – 12pm: Advancing Departmental Assessment Practice
Join us to learn more about the ongoing evolution and improvement in departmental assessment activities. We will talk about concrete steps that you can consider with your department to take your assessment work to the next level, with a particular focus on using assessment methods to answer meaningful questions about high-quality teaching practice in courses and your curriculum. Departments are encouraged to attend as a group, where they can work in their own breakout Zoom space. Based on your needs, we will provide opportunities for departments to discuss their assessment goals with on demand support from assessment committee members.

12pm – 1pm: AugSem Course Design and Community Engagement Project
Join Lyz Wendland, the Director of First Year Experience Program, and Ben Denkinger, Director of Assessment, for an opportunity to hear about the results of the fall 2021 AugSem assessment project. We collected data on AugSem course design, common visits from student support groups, and directly assessed first-year students’ thinking on the Community Engagement Learning Outcome. AugSem instructors and those with an interest and background in fostering community and civic engagement opportunities are encouraged to attend.

URGO now has funding for academic-year research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. These grants require 80 hours of research by May 23.

Student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals immediately. The URGO Advisory Committee will begin reviewing proposals February 21st.

Free COVID-19 Testing on Campus Starts TOMORROW

Starting Wednesday, February 16, students, faculty, and staff can take advantage of free COVID-19 testing on campus as part of a new program through the state of Minnesota. Tests will be provided on a walk-in basis in Gundale Chapel.

Results from the BinaxNOW rapid antigen tests will be ready in approximately 15 minutes and can be displayed via the NAVICA mobile app to show proof of recent testing. Calling All Artists – The 2022 Solving for X Artist Showcase

Calling all artists! This year, The Forum on Workplace Inclusion is providing a platform for artists of all mediums to showcase creative expressions at the 34th annual conference around the theme Solving For X: Tackling Inequities in a World of Unknowns.

Submissions can be made in the form of print, video, or audio recording not to exceed seven minutes in duration. The deadline to submit your work is Friday March 11, 2022.

Submissions will be reviewed by committee and selected submissions notified by March 21, 2022. Artists selected will have the opportunity to attend the entirety of this year’s annual conference and be invited to share and talk about their work in a virtual showcase event Tuesday, April 5, 2022.

Although there have been gains in diversity across various healthcare sectors, leadership positions continue to be disproportionately held by White men. Understanding the impact that social determinants of health like racism and discrimination have on healthcare outcomes for Black women, it is bad business for them to be underrepresented at the decision and policy-making levels in healthcare. How do we solve this pervasive problem?
Join us as we share how the University of Chicago Medical Center (UCM) is leveraging a formal sponsorship program focused on increasing the representation of Black women at the senior leadership level. Also, participants will learn how UCM is using a formal sponsorship program – including critical conversations at the executive leadership level about the lived experience of Black women – to accelerate workplace culture transformation and advance healthcare equity. We will also explore how this may be applied in other organizations.

Summer Course: Writing for Television – Apply Now

Do you love watching television and have ever wondered how the creators wrote their pilot for that hit TV show you love to watch? Or, are you a writer in a different medium and have always wanted to try your hand at writing for television?

Grow your writing skills this summer with the course PWC 320 “Writing for Television”. This intensive course will be modeled on a professional writer’s room and as such all students will be required to actively participate. Students will be expected to participate in the development and breaking of story while learning to pitch ideas, create outlines, and reading and providing feedback on your colleagues’ work. Each of these steps will be instrumental in aiding you with creating your own pilot!

The limit of individuals allowed in the Food Lab at a time is 10 people (including Campus Kitchen student workers) so do not forget to register ahead of time at this link.

The purpose of Food Lab workshops is to teach the Augsburg community how to cook a variety of dishes and build community through food. Everything from the ingredients (e.g. oil and seasonings) to cooking appliances are provided for students attending workshops. Apply For URGO Student Conference Travel Funding

URGO has a limited amount of funds this year to support students presenting their research at conferences.

URGO offers up to $850 in travel funding for Augsburg undergraduates who have been accepted to present research at a professional conference. These funds can mitigate the high costs of travel such as airfare and lodging, and can contribute to students’ professionalization.

The application is available at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) at the “conference travel” page. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so students are encouraged to work with their research mentor to submit a travel application as soon as possible after receiving acceptance to a conference. The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly to make decisions on applications.

URGO Academic-Year Research Funds

URGO now has funding for academic-year research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. These grants require 80 hours of research by May 23.

Student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals immediately. The URGO Advisory Committee will begin reviewing proposals February 21st.

ED Talk February 16: “Less but Better: Challenging the Culture of Infinite Capacity in Higher Ed”

Loosely based on the book “Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less” by Greg McKeown, this talk will touch base on overcoming the obstacles faculty face as we are continually asked (or expect ourselves) to do more in our professional lives. The target audience for this ED talk is anybody — but especially faculty — who are currently working more than 40-45 hours/week and find this unsustainable.

Join Jennifer Bankers-Fulbright (Associate Professor of Biology) and Lyz Wendland (Assistant Professor of Art and Design) as they briefly share how they both, independently and using different strategies, created boundaries for themselves during Fall semester, worked 40-hour weeks, and applied McKeown’s lesson: “If you don’t prioritize your life, someone else will.”

CTL will offer ED Talks (based on the concept of TED Talks) before each faculty meeting from 3:10-3:30pm over Zoom (link provided below; Augsburg login required). This year’s theme is “The Future of the Professoriate at Augsburg”, and 2021-2022 Ed talks will be framed under this broad theme that speaks to our “new normal” and beyond.

This workshop will cover the basics of creating a professional research poster as well as allow time for students to begin working on their poster with the assistance of URGO and McNair staff.

Tara Mader (HPE) and Jennifer Bankers-Fulbright (BIO), the 2022-2023 coordinators of the ICD grants and workshops) that will (1) introduce you to the key components of integrated course design* (ICD), (2) work with you to plan an immediate, practical improvement you can make to a course, and (3) give you “preferred status” if you apply for a 2022-2023 ICD grant (open to full-time faculty, only).

This workshop is also designated as an equity and/or inclusion-based event that counts toward your Good or Advanced standing in the Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program!

URGO Summer Research – Phase 1 Applications Due February 16

Are you looking for a paid summer research or creative activity opportunity here on campus? URGO applications for 2022 summer research are now available on the URGO website at http://www.augsburg.edu/urgo/research/on-campus-research/ All fields of study welcome!

We have multiple summer opportunities available for students.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM
The URGO Summer Research Program is an 11-week, on-campus program (May 12th – July 27th) where students are funded to conduct research with a faculty mentor. Students receive support throughout the research process from their faculty mentor, a Speaker Series, and weekly seminars with fellow researchers. URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $6,000 stipend and housing discount while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $3,000 stipend and a housing discount.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIPS
URGO also provides funding for students to work for a professor as a research assistant on an ongoing research project. This is a 100-hour commitment over the course of the summer and comes with a $1,500 stipend. This is an excellent opportunity to try out research for the first time or focus on a specific aspect of a research project.

Phase 1 of the applications are due February 16th at 11:59 PM, so start talking with your faculty members to learn about what research is going on in your department!

Tina is the Super Glue that keeps the Music Department’s faculty & students organized and on task! Annual Required Augsburg University Anti-Racism Training

During the June 9, 2020, town hall for faculty and staff, President Pribbenow announced seven new equity initiatives born out of response to the murder of George Floyd and Augsburg’s renewed commitment to accelerate and expand upon our university’s efforts to promote equity and inclusion during a national moment of racial and social justice reawakening. One of these initiatives was the requirement of Augsburg faculty and staff to complete an annual anti-racism training.

Please note that there are two remaining opportunities for faculty and staff to attend this training and fulfill this requirement. The spring training opportunity will take place on Thu, Feb 17 at 3:30-7:00 p.m. via Zoom and the make-up May training opportunity will take place on Thu, May 12 at 2:30-6:00 p.m. via Zoom.

Assessment Day 2022 is scheduled for Tuesday, February 22nd from 11am – 1pm. We will be on a convocation schedule for these constructive faculty workshops and to allow time for departments to engage with students for learning assessment activities. Mark your calendars and rally your department for the two following workshop sessions!

11am – 12pm: Advancing Departmental Assessment Practice
Join us to learn more about the ongoing evolution and improvement in departmental assessment activities. We will talk about concrete steps that you can consider with your department to take your assessment work to the next level, with a particular focus on using assessment methods to answer meaningful questions about high-quality teaching practice in courses and your curriculum. Departments are encouraged to attend as a group, where they can work in their own breakout Zoom space. Based on your needs, we will provide opportunities for departments to discuss their assessment goals with on demand support from assessment committee members.

12pm – 1pm: AugSem Course Design and Community Engagement Project
Join Lyz Wendland, the Director of First Year Experience Program, and Ben Denkinger, Director of Assessment, for an opportunity to hear about the results of the fall 2021 AugSem assessment project. We collected data on AugSem course design, common visits from student support groups, and directly assessed first-year students’ thinking on the Community Engagement Learning Outcome. AugSem instructors and those with an interest and background in fostering community and civic engagement opportunities are encouraged to attend.

Free Trip to Holocaust Museum – Due February 21

The MINNE Holocaust Fellows program selects college students to participate in a fully-paid, one-day trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. to acquire a more in-depth knowledge of the Holocaust. Fellows tour the permanent exhibits and featured exhibits, as well as meet with a museum representative. Awards come through the MINNE Fund of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, who has chosen Augsburg to be one of the select universities to participate in the program.

ED Talk February 16: Less but Better: Challenging Culture of Infinite Capacity in Higher Education

Loosely based on the book “Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less” by Greg McKeown, this talk will touch base on overcoming the obstacles faculty face as we are continually asked (or expect ourselves) to do more in our professional lives. The target audience for this ED talk is anybody — but especially faculty — who are currently working more than 40-45 hours/week and find this unsustainable.

Join Jennifer Bankers-Fulbright (Associate Professor of Biology) and Lyz Wendland (Assistant Professor of Art and Design) as they briefly share how they both, independently and using different strategies, created boundaries for themselves during Fall semester, worked 40-hour weeks, and applied McKeown’s lesson: “If you don’t prioritize your life, someone else will.”

CTL will offer ED Talks (based on the concept of TED Talks) before each faculty meeting from 3:10-3:30pm over Zoom (link provided below; Augsburg login required). Apply For URGO Student Conference Travel Funding

URGO has a limited amount of funds this year to support students presenting their research at conferences.

URGO offers up to $850 in travel funding for Augsburg undergraduates who have been accepted to present research at a professional conference. These funds can mitigate the high costs of travel such as airfare and lodging, and can contribute to students’ professionalization.

The application is available at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) at the “conference travel” page. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so students are encouraged to work with their research mentor to submit a travel application as soon as possible after receiving acceptance to a conference. The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly to make decisions on applications.

Annual Required Augsburg University Anti-Racism Training

During the June 9, 2020, town hall for faculty and staff, President Pribbenow announced seven new equity initiatives born out of response to the murder of George Floyd and Augsburg’s renewed commitment to accelerate and expand upon our university’s efforts to promote equity and inclusion during a national moment of racial and social justice reawakening. One of these initiatives was the requirement of Augsburg faculty and staff to complete an annual anti-racism training.

Please note that there are two remaining opportunities for faculty and staff to attend this training and fulfill this requirement. The spring training opportunity will take place on Thu, Feb 17 at 3:30-7:00 p.m. via Zoom and the make-up May training opportunity will take place on Thu, May 12 at 2:30-6:00 p.m. via Zoom.

Are you looking for a paid summer research or creative activity opportunity here on campus? URGO applications for 2022 summer research are now available on the URGO website at http://www.augsburg.edu/urgo/research/on-campus-research/ All fields of study welcome!

We have multiple summer opportunities available for students.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM
The URGO Summer Research Program is an 11-week, on-campus program (May 12th – July 27th) where students are funded to conduct research with a faculty mentor. Students receive support throughout the research process from their faculty mentor, a Speaker Series, and weekly seminars with fellow researchers. URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $6,000 stipend and housing discount while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $3,000 stipend and a housing discount.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIPS
URGO also provides funding for students to work for a professor as a research assistant on an ongoing research project. This is a 100-hour commitment over the course of the summer and comes with a $1,500 stipend. This is an excellent opportunity to try out research for the first time or focus on a specific aspect of a research project.

Phase 1 of the applications are due February 16th at 11:59 PM, so start talking with your faculty members to learn about what research is going on in your department!

Although there have been gains in diversity across various healthcare sectors, leadership positions continue to be disproportionately held by White men. Understanding the impact that social determinants of health like racism and discrimination have on healthcare outcomes for Black women, it is bad business for them to be underrepresented at the decision and policy-making levels in healthcare. How do we solve this pervasive problem?
Join us as we share how the University of Chicago Medical Center (UCM) is leveraging a formal sponsorship program focused on increasing the representation of Black women at the senior leadership level. Also, participants will learn how UCM is using a formal sponsorship program – including critical conversations at the executive leadership level about the lived experience of Black women – to accelerate workplace culture transformation and advance healthcare equity. We will also explore how this may be applied in other organizations.

Alternative Spring Break Trip to Albuquerque, New Mexico – Register TODAY

Augsburg Campus Ministries invites you to participate in its alternative spring break to Albuquerque, New Mexico, one of the oldest cities in the United States. Albuquerque has a unique multicultural history and heritage with Native American and Hispanic and Latino cultural influences. The city is located in north central New Mexico near the Sandia Mountains.
While in Albuquerque, we will be partnering with Service Learning Camps, and our days will be structured with community service projects, time for reflection, learning opportunities, and visiting local attractions.

Dates of Trip: March 12-19, 2022
Destination: Albuquerque, New Mexico
Transportation: Bus

We know that our students and community members are deeply affected by the ongoing racial injustices in our city and the violence done to black and brown bodies. We also know that many in our community actively participate in social justice work, and that this important work can both replenish and at times, deplete our energy. Metropolitan Council has a number of summer internships listed in Handshake and on their webpage at https://metrocouncil.org/Employment/Internships.aspx.

Their internship program offers a wide variety of opportunities to qualifying interns. All majors welcome. The program is designed to educate and mentor interns by providing professional on-the-job training and development. Participants of our internship program receive an hourly salary! Most interns work full-time during the summer, and some opportunities continue part-time through the school year.

Eligibility
Must be enrolled in a degree-seeking program (associate’s or bachelor’s or master’s) or be a recent graduate (within 12 months from posting date) from a degree program (associate’s or bachelor’s or master’s).

Must be a citizen or national of the United States; a lawful, permanent resident; or have authorization to work in the United States. (Documentation to verify employment eligibility will be required at the time of employment.)

Summer internships
Participants receive an hourly salary. Most interns work full-time during the summer, and some opportunities continue part-time through the school year.

Program dates
The 12-week programs begin each summer in late May and end in mid-August.

URGO Academic-Year Research Funds

URGO now has funding for academic-year research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. These grants require 80 hours of research by May 23.

Get paid to conduct STEM research (a few social science options) with some of the nation’s top academics at universities, labs, or institutes through a summer research program. Such programs are a great way to enhance your education, meet new people, and explore a new city!

Present Your Research at Zyzzogeton – Register by March 1

Augsburg’s annual Zyzzogeton Research Symposium showcases the work of over 80 undergraduate researchers in all academic disciplines and will take place on Tuesday, April 12, 2022. Students who have conducted research over the course of the last year and would like to present a poster should register at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) by March 1 (a mentor-approved abstract is required to register). Students planning to present at Zyzzogeton are encouraged to attend the Postermaking Workshop on Tuesday, February 15, 6:30 – 8:00pm. Please RSVP when you register.

Free Trip to Holocaust Museum – Due February 21

The MINNE Holocaust Fellows program selects college students to participate in a fully-paid, one-day trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. to acquire a more in-depth knowledge of the Holocaust. Fellows tour the permanent exhibits and featured exhibits, as well as meet with a museum representative. Awards come through the MINNE Fund of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, who has chosen Augsburg to be one of the select universities to participate in the program.

The 2022 trip will take place on April 5, 2022. Applications are due on February 21, 2022 and can be found at https://jewishminneapolis.org/minne/. If you would like to learn more about the program or would like advising on the application, please contact the URGO office at urgo@augsburg.edu.

Eligibility:
• U.S. Citizen
• Full-time student
• Sophomore or junior planning to graduate no earlier than Spring 2023
• 3.0 GPA or higher
• Proof of COVID vaccinations

The Augsburg Leadership Awards are given at the end of every spring semester to outstanding student leaders and student organizations. Members of the Augsburg Senior Leadership Society are inducted, graduating Act Six scholars are honored, and recent graduates of the Emerging Leaders Program are celebrated and recognized. URGO Summer Research – Phase 1 Applications Due February 16

Are you looking for a paid summer research or creative activity opportunity here on campus? URGO applications for 2022 summer research are now available on the URGO website at http://www.augsburg.edu/urgo/research/on-campus-research/ All fields of study welcome!

We have multiple summer opportunities available for students.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM
The URGO Summer Research Program is an 11-week, on-campus program (May 12th – July 27th) where students are funded to conduct research with a faculty mentor. Students receive support throughout the research process from their faculty mentor, a Speaker Series, and weekly seminars with fellow researchers. URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $6,000 stipend and housing discount while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $3,000 stipend and a housing discount.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIPS
URGO also provides funding for students to work for a professor as a research assistant on an ongoing research project. This is a 100-hour commitment over the course of the summer and comes with a $1,500 stipend. This is an excellent opportunity to try out research for the first time or focus on a specific aspect of a research project.

Phase 1 of the applications are due February 16th at 11:59 PM, so start talking with your faculty members to learn about what research is going on in your department!

Although there have been gains in diversity across various healthcare sectors, leadership positions continue to be disproportionately held by White men. Understanding the impact that social determinants of health like racism and discrimination have on healthcare outcomes for Black women, it is bad business for them to be underrepresented at the decision and policy-making levels in healthcare. How do we solve this pervasive problem?
Join us as we share how the University of Chicago Medical Center (UCM) is leveraging a formal sponsorship program focused on increasing the representation of Black women at the senior leadership level. Also, participants will learn how UCM is using a formal sponsorship program – including critical conversations at the executive leadership level about the lived experience of Black women – to accelerate workplace culture transformation and advance healthcare equity. We will also explore how this may be applied in other organizations.

Students – don’t forget about TutorMe! It is available to Augsburg students 24/7 and offers tutoring in over 300 subjects from qualified tutors. Students are able to use 3 hours a week; 3 one hour sessions or 6 thirty-minute sessions. You can access TutorMe through any of your Moodle classes. At the top left of your screen there is an orange tab to see the side panel of resources. As you scroll down, you will see the “Augsburg Tools” section and underneath is the link to TutorMe.
