Apply now to take the fall semester Model United Nations course, POL 368. Members of this class will participate in the American Model United Nations from November 20-23, 2021, held in Chicago, IL.
In this course, you will gain in-depth understanding of the United Nations and international diplomacy through the process of preparation for attending the conference in November. Students research a country and set of issues for the committee on which they will serve.
The fall 2021 Augsburg delegation will be representing the countries of Guatemala, Namibia and Sweden. In addition, a focus of the class will also be the study of indigenous peoples and their connection to the United Nations, with emphasis on Canadian First Nations.
The conference provides experiential learning that enables you to develop a better understanding of the inner workings of the UN, and a forum to hone skills in diplomacy, negotiation, critical thinking, compromise, public speaking, writing, and research. This opportunity is a great chance to put your learning into practice!
We will accept applications until September 1, 2021 or until the program fills.
Prerequisite: students must complete thePOL 160 course before Fall 2021, or have relevant equivalent academic experience.

2020 brought with it an international a pandemic, a financial crisis, a polarizing presidential election, and an acute and overdue focus on racial and structural inequities. The effects still ripple in 2021, with one being a renewed energy and focus to create safe and healthy work environments, for all. This requires not only enduring conversations about workplace equity, but also “lifting up the hood” and exploring where employees’ ability to flourish, connect and contribute without fear of retribution may be hindered. In this podcast, speakers will discuss the connections between psychological safety, well-being, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Estimated time commitment of two 60-minute sessions: session 1 will include completion of intake forms, surveys, and 30-40 min of exercise then session 2 will include completion of surveys and watching a short video. The second session will take place 1-2 weeks after the initial session. Compensation of $20 in Target gift cards will be provided upon completion of the second session. About the MNUDL
The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University, located in the heart of Minneapolis, Minnesota. We provide academic competitive debate programming to Twin Cities-area middle and high school students. Our mission is to empower debaters to become engaged learners, critical thinkers, and active global citizens who are effective advocates for themselves and their communities.
The Community Debate Liaison Role
Our VISTA role, beginning in August 2021, is designed to build capacity for our fast-growing Spanish Debate League and East African Debate programs. In these programs, education leaders in the Latine and East African communities took the historic debate model and adapted it to suit their community’s needs. The VISTA member will serve as a community liaison, promoting our programs more broadly throughout the Twin Cities area and establishing new relationships within universities, corporate affinity groups, area nonprofits, and more.
Note: Spanish or Somali speaking skills preferred, but not required.

AmeriCorps VISTAs receive training, a choice of an education award or end of service stipend, an education award upon successful completion of service, health coverage, relocation allowance, childcare assistance if eligible, living allowance, and a stipend. The Community Debate Liaison will be a member of the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits VISTA cohort.

Minnesota Multifaith Network (MnMN) is offering an interfaith convening called, “Discerning our Moral Commitments Together: A Multifaith Conversation on Racial Justice and Human Dignity” on Thursday, June 17, 2021, from 11:00am to 1:00pm CDT. Held online, all faith leaders, interfaith organization leadership and volunteers, people of all faith backgrounds, those of no faith commitments, and everyone committed to the flourishing of all communities in Minnesota are invited to participate in a deep conversation about our shared moral commitments as we grapple with all the ways the pandemic and oppression is causing harm. Sharon Wade is retiring after 20 years of service to Augsburg University.
A virtual event is being held: Friday, June 4 from 1:00pm to 2:30pm via zoom.
Sharon began her career at Augsburg twenty years ago. She started out working as an administrative assistant for both the English Department and the Nursing Department. When the nursing department expanded its programs, Sharon became the nursing program coordinator. Sharon has assisted thousands of students with registering, has answered a zillion student questions, and provided incredible support to the nursing faculty.
Please join the nursing department to wish Sharon the best in her retirement.

Community Aid Network (CANMN) is a volunteer-led mutual aid site located in Minneapolis, MN. We work to build mutual aid bonds with our neighbors, organize volunteers and redistribute resources to ensure everyone has the means for dignified survival.
CANMN is looking for a Somali interpreter to provide assistance during community distribution days. Main duties would include taking food and supply orders and answering questions related to distribution. There is also a potential future need for written translation.
This is a part-time PAID position to start immediately and run through the end of August (with the potential for future work). Hours are flexible. Distribution days are Mondays and Wednesdays, 12 – 4pm, and are divided into two shifts each day (11:30am – 2pm and 2 – 4:30pm). Physical demands for this position include standing for sustained periods of time and some moderate lifting (i.e. helping to load food orders into vehicles).
CANMN operates out of the Children’s Theatre Company/Minneapolis Institute of Art at 2400 3rd Ave. in Minneapolis.
We follow all COVID-19 safety regulations, as defined by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

2020 brought with it an international a pandemic, a financial crisis, a polarizing presidential election, and an acute and overdue focus on racial and structural inequities. The effects still ripple in 2021, with one being a renewed energy and focus to create safe and healthy work environments, for all. This requires not only enduring conversations about workplace equity, but also “lifting up the hood” and exploring where employees’ ability to flourish, connect and contribute without fear of retribution may be hindered. In these programs, education leaders in the Latine and East African communities took the historic debate model and adapted it to suit their community’s needs. The VISTA member will serve as a community liaison, promoting our programs more broadly throughout the Twin Cities area and establishing new relationships within universities, corporate affinity groups, area nonprofits, and more.
Note: Spanish or Somali speaking skills preferred, but not required.

Sharon Wade is retiring after 20 years of service to Augsburg University.
A virtual event is being held: Friday, June 4 from 1:00pm to 2:30pm via zoom.
Sharon began her career at Augsburg twenty years ago. She started out working as an administrative assistant for both the English Department and the Nursing Department. When the nursing department expanded its programs, Sharon became the nursing program coordinator. Sharon has assisted thousands of students with registering, has answered a zillion student questions, and provided incredible support to the nursing faculty.

Apply now to take the fall semester Model United Nations course, POL 368. Members of this class will participate in the American Model United Nations from November 20-23, 2021, held in Chicago, IL.
In this course, you will gain in-depth understanding of the United Nations and international diplomacy through the process of preparation for attending the conference in November. Students research a country and set of issues for the committee on which they will serve.
The fall 2021 Augsburg delegation will be representing the countries of Guatemala, Namibia and Sweden. In addition, a focus of the class will also be the study of indigenous peoples and their connection to the United Nations, with emphasis on Canadian First Nations.
The conference provides experiential learning that enables you to develop a better understanding of the inner workings of the UN, and a forum to hone skills in diplomacy, negotiation, critical thinking, compromise, public speaking, writing, and research. This opportunity is a great chance to put your learning into practice!
We will accept applications until September 1, 2021 or until the program fills.
Prerequisite: students must complete thePOL 160 course before Fall 2021, or have relevant equivalent academic experience.

Community Aid Network (CANMN) is a volunteer-led mutual aid site located in Minneapolis, MN. We work to build mutual aid bonds with our neighbors, organize volunteers and redistribute resources to ensure everyone has the means for dignified survival.
CANMN is looking for a Somali interpreter to provide assistance during community distribution days. Main duties would include taking food and supply orders and answering questions related to distribution. There is also a potential future need for written translation.
This is a part-time PAID position to start immediately and run through the end of August (with the potential for future work). Hours are flexible. Distribution days are Mondays and Wednesdays, 12 – 4pm, and are divided into two shifts each day (11:30am – 2pm and 2 – 4:30pm). Physical demands for this position include standing for sustained periods of time and some moderate lifting (i.e. helping to load food orders into vehicles).
CANMN operates out of the Children’s Theatre Company/Minneapolis Institute of Art at 2400 3rd Ave. in Minneapolis.
We follow all COVID-19 safety regulations, as defined by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

A virtual conference hosted by Augsburg University

The 2021 Vocation of Lutheran Higher Education Conference (formerly, the Vocation of a Lutheran College Conference) for the Network of ELCA Colleges and Universities will convene daily, July 12 – 15, 2021, 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm Eastern Time, except the session on July 13th, which will meet 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm Eastern Time.
The theme of the 2021 conference is “Called to Place: Community Responsive Education.” Participants will consider how local landscapes, neighborhoods, events, and people influence the missions, identities, and institutional vocations of our colleges and universities, along with our individual callings related to antiracism in our particular communities.

Registration requires two steps. The first step is registering to receive the two Zoom links that will give you access to the conference. These links are included in the registration form. The Alumni Office is looking for input on an idea for an on-campus event this summer. Would you attend an outdoor movie night? Augsburg’s Education Department is pleased to announce multiple funding opportunities for licensure-track students of Color and Indigenous students. We were fortunate to receive a generous grant from the Minnesota Governor’s Emergency Education Relief (GEER).
Only students who are juniors, seniors, or MAT status may apply. The grant will cover only courses that lead to licensure. Undergraduate and graduate students are required to apply each semester for a one or two credit tuition award.
Undergraduate students:
The grant will cover 1 credit per semester at a cost of $1,228 for undergraduate students.
Graduate students:
The grant will cover 2 credits per semester at a cost of $509 per credit for a total of $1018.
Stipend for student teachers:
Students who are interested must complete the grant application to receive summer 2021 tuition assistance.

Dr. Michael Wentzel (Chemistry) received a new grant award of nearly $15,000 from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency’s Toxicity Reduction program. In the two-year project, green chemistry will be developed as a unifying theme throughout the chemistry curriculum at Augsburg University. Non-major courses will have a new introduction component to green chemistry emphasized in unique laboratory experiments. The chemistry major curriculum already has a large number of green chemistry principles woven in it, but this work will unify these into a clear message across multiple courses. Finally, a new course on green chemistry and toxicology will serve as a capstone on this theme. Dr. Wentzel will collaborate with multiple faculty in the Chemistry department, as well as undergraduate students, in order to carry out this impactful project.

Apply now to take the fall semester Model United Nations course, POL 368. Members of this class will participate in the American Model United Nations from November 20-23, 2021, held in Chicago, IL.
In this course, you will gain in-depth understanding of the United Nations and international diplomacy through the process of preparation for attending the conference in November. Students research a country and set of issues for the committee on which they will serve.
The fall 2021 Augsburg delegation will be representing the countries of Guatemala, Namibia and Sweden. In addition, a focus of the class will also be the study of indigenous peoples and their connection to the United Nations, with emphasis on Canadian First Nations.
The conference provides experiential learning that enables you to develop a better understanding of the inner workings of the UN, and a forum to hone skills in diplomacy, negotiation, critical thinking, compromise, public speaking, writing, and research. This opportunity is a great chance to put your learning into practice!
We will accept applications until September 1, 2021 or until the program fills.
Prerequisite: students must complete thePOL 160 course before Fall 2021, or have relevant equivalent academic experience.

Dr. Michael Wentzel (Chemistry) received a new grant award of nearly $15,000 from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency’s Toxicity Reduction program. In the two-year project, green chemistry will be developed as a unifying theme throughout the chemistry curriculum at Augsburg University. Non-major courses will have a new introduction component to green chemistry emphasized in unique laboratory experiments. The chemistry major curriculum already has a large number of green chemistry principles woven in it, but this work will unify these into a clear message across multiple courses. Finally, a new course on green chemistry and toxicology will serve as a capstone on this theme. Dr. Wentzel will collaborate with multiple faculty in the Chemistry department, as well as undergraduate students, in order to carry out this impactful project.

Community Aid Network (CANMN) is a volunteer-led mutual aid site located in Minneapolis, MN. We work to build mutual aid bonds with our neighbors, organize volunteers and redistribute resources to ensure everyone has the means for dignified survival.
CANMN is looking for a Somali interpreter to provide assistance during community distribution days. Main duties would include taking food and supply orders and answering questions related to distribution. There is also a potential future need for written translation.
This is a part-time PAID position. Hours are flexible. Distribution days are Mondays and Wednesdays, 12 – 4pm, and are divided into two shifts each day (11:30am – 2pm and 2 – 4:30pm). Physical demands for this position include standing for sustained periods of time and some moderate lifting (i.e. helping to load food orders into vehicles).
CANMN operates out of the Children’s Theatre Company/Minneapolis Institute of Art at 2400 3rd Ave. in Minneapolis.
We follow all COVID-19 safety regulations, as defined by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

With the trend toward a more diverse workforce continuing, so are the ways we conduct business. In the past, most U.S. businesses functioned primarily within our borders. Today, globalization is proving to be a huge game changer for many companies, big and small. With globalization and increased immigration, the potential for misunderstandings in the workplace is really high. First, language differences may lead to miscommunication and misinterpretation. Second you fail to take into account significant cultural differences. For example, during a performance review, you provide constructive criticism to an employee with the intent of helping him improve his performance. Later on you learn that he quit his job because of the shame and loss of face your feedback caused. In this interactive Webinar, you will understand the impact of cultural differences in the workplace and learn strategies to bridge those differences effectively.

Since 2008, seventy-two Augsburg students have received Gilman scholarships, totaling $284,000. In addition, over the last 10 semesters, Augsburg’s Gilman win rate has averaged over 60% – of 38 completed applications in that time, we have had 23 winners!
It takes a village to support students in their application process. Many thanks to Casey Jarvala, Catherine Maun and the whole financial aid team, staff in TRIO, MSS, Academic Advising, and URGO and, of course, faculty mentors/advisors.

A virtual conference hosted by Augsburg University

The 2021 Vocation of Lutheran Higher Education Conference (formerly, the Vocation of a Lutheran College Conference) for the Network of ELCA Colleges and Universities will convene daily, July 12 – 15, 2021, 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm Eastern Time, except the session on July 13th, which will meet 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm Eastern Time.
The theme of the 2021 conference is “Called to Place: Community Responsive Education.” Participants will consider how local landscapes, neighborhoods, events, and people influence the missions, identities, and institutional vocations of our colleges and universities, along with our individual callings related to antiracism in our particular communities.
