Zyzzogeton Student Research Symposium – TODAY

Augsburg celebrates the creativity and scholarship of undergraduate students with its annual Zyzzogeton festival. The festival falls at the end of each academic year and is a culmination of achievement featuring work across departments.

This year Zyzzogeton will feature posters from about 50 undergraduate researchers in the science, social science and humanity disciplines.

Zyzzogeton will take place on Tuesday, April 12, 3 – 4:30pm in Hagfors Center. There will be a convocation schedule for that day and no classes scheduled during the event time, so we hope that all students, faculty and staff are able to attend!

MNUDL Volunteer Opportunity: Seeking Finance Professionals to Judge Financial Literacy Debates

You’re Invited! Judge Debates & Network with Students on May 21st!

The MN Urban Debate League is looking for financial professionals that identify as female or gender non-conforming to judge at our annual Financial Literacy Debate tournament this year!

You do not need debate experience to be a judge. We will provide training and opportunities to ask questions prior to the tournament, and will also be available to support you during the tournament.

Financial Literacy Debate is an innovative program that supports students’ public speaking, critical thinking, and financial literacy skills and knowledge. Our program works to close the gender gap in the financial sector by building the leadership and financial knowledge of high school participants that identify as female or gender non-conforming, through debate. Over the course of the initiative, students meet with their coach after school, learn about the topic area and fundamental economic concepts through an engaging curriculum, hold practice debates, and participate in a competition with other schools.

Our tournament this year is tentatively scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 21 from 9:30 am – 2:30 pm at Augsburg University. The tournament schedule will be as follows:

· 9:30 am: Judge training

· 10:00 am: Judge three debate rounds about the benefits/harms of cryptocurrency

· 1:00: Lunch and networking between students and financial professionals

· 2:00: Awards Ceremony

· 2:30: End

COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic on Campus Next Week

Augsburg will host a free vaccine clinic on Wednesday, April 20, for anyone who would like to receive a first, second, or booster dose of the Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccines. This includes second booster shots for those who are eligible.

This event is open to all members of the Augsburg community as well as friends, family, and the general public ages 5 and older. The shots are free and no insurance information will be required. All attendees will receive a $50 gift card from the state of Minnesota, and Augsburg students who attend will also be entered to win an additional $25 gift card.

Instructional Cost Cutting Continues

Faculty should continue to send questions to the Budget Working Group and attend to the weekly reports from Senate President Andy Aoki. Progress has been made on meeting the cost cutting goal from courses and faculty reassignments. However, we are not there yet and the goal must be met. Additional decisions and cuts will still be made in the next few weeks and, of course, much depends on retention and enrollment achievements over the summer. Faculty attention and collaboration in reaching this goal is important and appreciated.

Come rekindle community, self-heal, and reconnect with the Earth through celebrations during Earth Month. These Environmental Action Committee-supported events will allow you further connection to green spaces on campus, engagement with educational experiences by all forms of teachers, exploration of inclusive career paths, and the opportunity to build solidarity with social justice work bonded by intersectionality. Together in community, learn from Indigenous cultures, be rewarded with rest and find its productivity, fix your bike, have a ball with slow fashion, eat local, and then finish the month with a community bonfire into the sunset.

Earn $55 and Help Students Build Skills: Judge the Spanish Debate League This Wednesday

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, is searching for some last-minute Spanish-speaking judges for our Spanish Debate League tournament this Wednesday.

No debate experience is required. We are seeking folks who are fluent in Spanish and willing to be educators, who will listen to students speak, give constructive feedback, and choose a winner of our debates. You’ll help students build their academic skills and Spanish fluency.

You’ll earn $55 for 2 rounds held virtually from 4:00-6:30 or 7 PM Central Standard Time. This includes time for judge training.

Applications are Now Open for the 2022-23 PRISM Scholars Program

The PRISM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Funded by the National Science Foundation, PRISM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $10,000 per student per year. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Fall 2022 (graduating by December ‘24)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher (scholars will be expected to raise their GPA to 3.0 during program participation)
– U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)

Application deadline: Wednesday, May 18 at 11:59pm
Faculty reference deadline: Friday, May 27 (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application)

Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.

ED Talk April 13: Addressing the Faculty and Staff’s Stress and Burnout in Music Therapy

Under the COVID-19 pandemic situation, many faculty and staff are experiencing a high level of stress and burnout. Finding ways to address this issue is crucial for their overall well-being, and it will positively affect the work and learning environment for all. In this in-person ED Talk, three music therapy faculty will facilitate a mini music therapy session, demonstrating how music can be used to address stress and burnout. An information sheet that contains various ways of using music will be offered as well.

CTL will offer ED Talks (based on the concept of TED Talks) before each faculty meeting from 3:10-3:30pm in Hagfors 151. This year’s theme is “The Future of the Professoriate at Augsburg”, and 2021-2022 Ed talks will be framed under this broad theme that speaks to our “new normal” and beyond.

In this talk, we will explore how the skeleton of the cell is able to arrange itself and how enzymes could move faster than expected when they perform their chemical reaction.

New May Workshop For Full-Time Faculty: Anti-Racist Pedagogy

The Center for Teaching and Learning, supported Critical Race and Ethnicity Studies (CRES) donor funds, has designed a two-day Anti-Racist Pedagogy workshop for full-time faculty at Augsburg. This workshop is offered to encourage faculty to further develop their knowledge and skills in evidence-based, anti-racist pedagogy. Because this is a pilot, CTL is limiting the number of participants to 10. Participants will be selected based on their responses to a short application (see link below).

All selected participants will receive a $1000 stipend to (1) participate in the 2-day workshop Tuesday May 17 through Wednesday May 18, 2022 (10:00am to 2:00pm each day; lunch included) and (2) complete a self-determined “final project”. Applicants who are proposing to work on a course scheduled for Fall 2022 and/or who have completed the Augsburg University Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program will be given priority.

The PRISM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Funded by the National Science Foundation, PRISM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $10,000 per student per year. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Fall 2022 (graduating by December ‘24)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher (scholars will be expected to raise their GPA to 3.0 during program participation)
– U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)

Application deadline: Wednesday, May 18 at 11:59pm
Faculty reference deadline: Friday, May 27 (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application)

Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.

ED Talk April 13: Addressing the Faculty and Staff’s Stress and Burnout in Music Therapy

Under the COVID-19 pandemic situation, many faculty and staff are experiencing a high level of stress and burnout. Finding ways to address this issue is crucial for their overall well-being, and it will positively affect the work and learning environment for all. In this in-person ED Talk, three music therapy faculty will facilitate a mini music therapy session, demonstrating how music can be used to address stress and burnout. An information sheet that contains various ways of using music will be offered as well.

CTL will offer ED Talks (based on the concept of TED Talks) before each faculty meeting from 3:10-3:30pm in Hagfors 151. This year’s theme is “The Future of the Professoriate at Augsburg”, and 2021-2022 Ed talks will be framed under this broad theme that speaks to our “new normal” and beyond.

Summer course: Writing for Television – Apply Now

Do you love watching television and have ever wondered how the creators wrote their pilot for that hit TV show you love to watch? Or, are you a writer in a different medium and have always wanted to try your hand at writing for television?

Grow your writing skills this summer with the course PWC 320 “Writing for Television”. This intensive course will be modeled on a professional writer’s room and as such all students will be required to actively participate. Students will be expected to participate in the development and breaking of story while learning to pitch ideas, create outlines, and reading and providing feedback on your colleagues’ work. Each of these steps will be instrumental in aiding you with creating your own pilot!

This course is taught through Augsburg University’s partnership with the nationally acclaimed Playwrights’ Center.

WRITING FOR TELEVISION: Writing the Television Pilot, PWC 320

DATES: June 4 – July 30

Zyzzogeton Student Research Symposium – April 12

Augsburg celebrates the creativity and scholarship of undergraduate students with its annual Zyzzogeton festival. The festival falls at the end of each academic year and is a culmination of achievement featuring work across departments.

This year Zyzzogeton will feature posters from about 50 undergraduate researchers in the science, social science and humanity disciplines.

Zyzzogeton will take place on Tuesday, April 12, 3 – 4:30pm in Hagfors Center. There will be a convocation schedule for that day and no classes scheduled during the event time, so we hope that all students, faculty and staff are able to attend!

We will also leave together at 3:00 pm and arrive back on campus around 3:30. Bring your own bags! If you’d prefer, you can also leave earlier on your own with your new bussing knowledge handy.

The purpose of this event is to teach the Augsburg community how to use the public transit as well as solve the transportation issue that a lot of Augsburg residents have. We can make an environmental impact as a group. Let’s find out how to use our Auggie Passes.

Ramadan and Augsburg Religious Holidays Policy

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Muslim calendar, and the holy month of fasting began on April 2 and runs until May 2 this year. During Ramadan, Muslims refrain between dawn and dusk from all food and drink. After the sunset prayer, Muslims gather in their homes or mosques to break their fast with a meal called ifṭār that is often shared with friends and extended family. There are additional prayers offered at night called the tawarīḥ prayers, preferably performed in congregation at the mosque.

Faculty are encouraged to be mindful of how fasting and extra prayers may affect your students who are observing Ramadan. Faculty should work with students regarding finals. Some students might want to take their exams earlier day rather later the day, and students should have options To support faculty in accommodating the religious practices and commitments of our students, Augsburg has established procedures to be followed by students: students are responsible for notifying their instructors of a planned absence due to an observance and/or holiday.

Students are expected to formally notify their instructors at least two weeks in advance that they will miss class in order to observe a religious holiday. Students are to complete the Religious Observance Notification Form. https://cm.maxient.com/reportingform.php?AugsburgUniv&layout_id=7

The Religious Observance Notification Form must be submitted online. It is routed to the faculty member faculty member and the University Pastors in the Campus Ministry Office. Should either of these parties raise questions about the request, they will contact the student or the faculty member’s academic dean.

April 22nd is Earth Day. We are dedicating the entire month of April to celebrate our Home. Join us in attending the many events we have planned throughout the month!
Come rekindle community, self-heal, and reconnect with the Earth through celebrations during Earth Month. These Environmental Action Committee-supported events will allow you further connection to green spaces on campus, engagement with educational experiences by all forms of teachers, exploration of inclusive career paths, and the opportunity to build solidarity with social justice work bonded by intersectionality. Together in community, learn from Indigenous cultures, be rewarded with rest and find its productivity, fix your bike, have a ball with slow fashion, eat local, and then finish the month with a community bonfire into the sunset.

The Marketing and Communication division is seeking to hire one student employee to serve as a digital content assistant for the summer of 2022 and the 2022-23 academic year. This position will be for a minimum of 5 hours/week and a maximum of 8 hours/week.

Ideal candidates will be available to work beginning at 8:30 a.m. Monday-Friday.

Essential job functions include, but are not limited to:

Distributing A-mail on a daily basis by 9 a.m.
Designing digital display screens using the WordPress platform.
Performing content edits on the Augsburg University website: modifying text, creating pages, and uploading images.

Full-time Faculty: Apply for the 2022 Integrated Course Design (ICD) Grant Program

CTL’s annual ICD Grant program is offered to encourage faculty to develop their knowledge and skills in evidence-based, equitable course design. To that end, recipients of the grant will receive a $2000 stipend to participate in a 4-day workshop Monday May 23 through Thursday May 26, 2022 (9:00am – 12:30pm each day), optional coaching throughout the summer, and a wrap-up lunch in late August. To demonstrate application of the principles of the workshop, participants will also be asked to produce a final product that utilizes evidence-based, equitable course design (e.g. a syllabus).

Courses proposed for this grant may be new courses or courses undergoing substantial revision; preference will be given to courses being offered in the next academic year (2022-2023). Courses may be team-teaching collaborative efforts or individually-taught. Although open to full-time faculty at all stages in their career, preference will be given to early-career faculty.

Department or Organization Facebook Pages: Important Security Update

Facebook has begun disabling certain types of accounts that were used in the past to create and manage pages for Augsburg academic departments and other groups on campus. These so-called “gray accounts” do not have access to the same security features as standard accounts, and are being phased out by Facebook to increase security. Pages that only list a gray account as the Admin could be disabled by this change during the month of April.

If your department has an active Facebook page that was created by your area LFC, or if you do not know who created the page, please check to ensure that at least one person with a standard Facebook profile is listed as an Admin.

1. From your page, select Settings and then Page Roles.

2. Under Existing Page Roles, if the only Admin listed is an email alias using the format “department_social@augsburg.edu” (e.g., marketing_social@augsburg.edu), this is a gray account and your page is at risk of being disabled.

3. Under Assign a New Page Role, add at least one person with a standard Facebook account tied to either an Augsburg or personal email address as an Admin.
Marketing and Communication and IT are developing a new set of procedures and best practices to ensure that the university retains access to Augsburg-related Facebook pages as individual employees change over time. We will share these with the community in the coming weeks.

Students will be expected to participate in the development and breaking of story while learning to pitch ideas, create outlines, and reading and providing feedback on your colleagues’ work. Each of these steps will be instrumental in aiding you with creating your own pilot!

This course is taught through Augsburg University’s partnership with the nationally acclaimed Playwrights’ Center.

Zyzzogeton Student Research Symposium – April 12

Augsburg celebrates the creativity and scholarship of undergraduate students with its annual Zyzzogeton festival. The festival falls at the end of each academic year and is a culmination of achievement featuring work across departments.

This year Zyzzogeton will feature posters from about 50 undergraduate researchers in the science, social science and humanity disciplines.

Zyzzogeton will take place on Tuesday, April 12, 3 – 4:30pm in Hagfors Center. There will be a convocation schedule for that day and no classes scheduled during the event time, so we hope that all students, faculty and staff are able to attend!

The PRISM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Funded by the National Science Foundation, PRISM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $10,000 per student per year. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Fall 2022 (graduating by December ‘24)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher (scholars will be expected to raise their GPA to 3.0 during program participation)
– U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)

April 22nd is Earth Day. We are dedicating the entire month of April to celebrate our Home. Join us in attending the many events we have planned throughout the month!
Come rekindle community, self-heal, and reconnect with the Earth through celebrations during Earth Month. These Environmental Action Committee-supported events will allow you further connection to green spaces on campus, engagement with educational experiences by all forms of teachers, exploration of inclusive career paths, and the opportunity to build solidarity with social justice work bonded by intersectionality. Full-time Faculty: Apply for the 2022 Integrated Course Design (ICD) Grant Program

CTL’s annual ICD Grant program is offered to encourage faculty to develop their knowledge and skills in evidence-based, equitable course design. To that end, recipients of the grant will receive a $2000 stipend to participate in a 4-day workshop Monday May 23 through Thursday May 26, 2022 (9:00am – 12:30pm each day), optional coaching throughout the summer, and a wrap-up lunch in late August. To demonstrate application of the principles of the workshop, participants will also be asked to produce a final product that utilizes evidence-based, equitable course design (e.g. a syllabus).

Courses proposed for this grant may be new courses or courses undergoing substantial revision; preference will be given to courses being offered in the next academic year (2022-2023). Courses may be team-teaching collaborative efforts or individually-taught. Although open to full-time faculty at all stages in their career, preference will be given to early-career faculty.

The application form and samples of successful past applications are posted on the CTL Website under “Grants & Travel Funds; Annual Grants & Awards”. Applications are due Friday, April 8th at Noon.

Department or Organization Facebook Pages: Important Security Update

Facebook has begun disabling certain types of accounts that were used in the past to create and manage pages for Augsburg academic departments and other groups on campus. These so-called “gray accounts” do not have access to the same security features as standard accounts, and are being phased out by Facebook to increase security. Pages that only list a gray account as the Admin could be disabled by this change during the month of April.

If your department has an active Facebook page that was created by your area LFC, or if you do not know who created the page, please check to ensure that at least one person with a standard Facebook profile is listed as an Admin.

1. From your page, select Settings and then Page Roles.

2. Under Existing Page Roles, if the only Admin listed is an email alias using the format “department_social@augsburg.edu” (e.g., marketing_social@augsburg.edu), this is a gray account and your page is at risk of being disabled.

3. Under Assign a New Page Role, add at least one person with a standard Facebook account tied to either an Augsburg or personal email address as an Admin.
Marketing and Communication and IT are developing a new set of procedures and best practices to ensure that the university retains access to Augsburg-related Facebook pages as individual employees change over time. We will share these with the community in the coming weeks.

Student Worker Position: Digital Content Assistant, Marketing (Summer and Academic Year 2022-23)

The Marketing and Communication division is seeking to hire one student employee to serve as a digital content assistant for the summer of 2022 and the 2022-23 academic year. This position will be for a minimum of 5 hours/week and a maximum of 8 hours/week.

Ideal candidates will be available to work beginning at 8:30 a.m. Monday-Friday.

Essential job functions include, but are not limited to:

Distributing A-mail on a daily basis by 9 a.m.
Designing digital display screens using the WordPress platform.
Performing content edits on the Augsburg University website: modifying text, creating pages, and uploading images.

No-Zero Grading

After mentioning non-zero grading in a meeting, several people have asked me about it.

First, I will say that the idea of non-zero grading is not new. Admittedly, I am not even close to a Mathematician – but even I know the difference between a 0 (F) and a passing grade of 60 (D) is greater than the difference between a 60 (D) and a 70 (C). What seems at first like a crazy idea – let’s give people points for doing nothing – is actually a way to balance the percentage scale we use for grading. A student who earns a 50 for not turning anything in still earns an F. It just means that a student who missed the first assignment, earning a zero, will not have to stare at a failing grade for several more assignments, even if those other assignments were perfect A’s.

Let’s say a student misses the first assignment and gets a 0. They earn an 85 on the next assignment. Assuming these assignments are of equal weight, their average will be a 42.5 – still failing. Two weeks later they earn another 85 – still failing with 56.6. They would have to get three 85’s to make it to 63%. All the while they feel like they are failing and losing motivation. Now, let’s apply non-zero grading. For the missed assignment, they are assigned a 50. After the second assignment, the average is up to 67.5. Still less than the 85, but showing progress more quickly and probably feeling better about the class. Remember, they still failed the first assignment. By the 3rd assignment they have an average of 73 and motivation is growing! By the forth they have a 76. So this doesn’t mean the students are given something for nothing, it just means they are not being disproportionately penalized.

Second, non-zero grading is one tool in a toolbox to achieve equity in grading. “Grading for Equity” by Joe Feldman is a fine book to read to understand more fully the importance of equitable grading and to pick up a few strategies as you reflect on your own practices. I recommend it.

Summer Course: Writing for Television – Apply Now

Do you love watching television and have ever wondered how the creators wrote their pilot for that hit TV show you love to watch? Or, are you a writer in a different medium and have always wanted to try your hand at writing for television?

Grow your writing skills this summer with the course PWC 320 “Writing for Television”. This intensive course will be modeled on a professional writer’s room and as such all students will be required to actively participate. Students will be expected to participate in the development and breaking of story while learning to pitch ideas, create outlines, and reading and providing feedback on your colleagues’ work. Each of these steps will be instrumental in aiding you with creating your own pilot!

This course is taught through Augsburg University’s partnership with the nationally acclaimed Playwrights’ Center.

WRITING FOR TELEVISION: Writing the Television Pilot, PWC 320

DATES: June 4 – July 30

INSTRUCTOR: Taught by Christina Ham, a highly awarded and prolific writer for both stage and screen, including Sweet Tooth for Netflix, THEM for Amazon, and Westworld for HBO. She was named one of “The Top 20 Most-Produced Playwrights of the 2018-19 Season” by American Theatre magazine.

COST: standard summer tuition rate for 4 credits: $1,704

PASU Afrikan Night – TONIGHT

Today, Augsburg’s Pan Afrikan Student Union will be hosting our annual Afrikan Night Event. The theme for this year is “Taste of the Diaspora”. The main event will be from 7 PM – 9 PM in the Sateren Auditorium. There will be live performances, catered food, and an African Fashion Show! Then we’ll head over to our after party from 9:30 PM – 12 AM in the East Commons of the Christensen building.

We would like to invite all students and staff to attend. This event is one you do not want to miss! And guess what? The entry is free and you can invite your friends! We hope to see you all there.

PS: There will be a drawing for a medium TELFAR bag as well as other amazing prizes, enter by attending our Afrikan Week events and at Afrikan Night! The winners will be announced at the end of the event. To see the scheduled Afrikan Week events starting Monday, March 28th, keep up with our social media.

Introducing New Augsburg Facilities Director

I am pleased to announce that Augsburg has appointed a new Director of Facilities Management. Jim Orchard, who most recently was Director of Operations at Concordia University in St. Paul, will join Augsburg starting Monday, April 4.

Jim has more than 20 years experience in leading Facilities Management in higher education, including deep experience in both custodial and maintenance operations. He brings a wealth of expertise in daily facilities management, operational planning, financial management, team training and professional development, deferred maintenance, and management of new construction and capital projects.

Celebrate Earth Month in April!

April 22nd is Earth Day. We are dedicating the entire month of April to celebrate our Home. Join us in attending the many events we have planned throughout the month! Find our table in the lobby of Christensen Center today from 11:00AM-2:00PM to learn more about the events, starting with AISA’s Medicine Garden Blessing this Friday (4/1) 3-5PM in the Augsburg Community Garden.

Come rekindle community, self-heal, and reconnect with the Earth through celebrations during Earth Month. These Environmental Action Committee-supported events will allow you further connection to green spaces on campus, engagement with educational experiences by all forms of teachers, exploration of inclusive career paths, and the opportunity to build solidarity with social justice work bonded by intersectionality. Together in community, learn from Indigenous cultures, be rewarded with rest and find its productivity, fix your bike, have a ball with slow fashion, eat local, and then finish the month with a community bonfire into the sunset.

Chapel: Jarabe Mexicano

Jarabe Mexicano invites audiences on a joyride through a versatile songbook of Mexican Folk as well as Rock & Roll, Tex-Mex, Latin Rock, and Reggae-Cumbia.
