We can ship via UPS, FedEx and USPS and have discounted rates through UPS and FedEx. There are cut off dates to have packages arrive by Dec 24th which are detailed below.

If you are planning on receiving personal packages through the University we would ask that you be prompt in picking up your package from shipping/receiving as we have limited storage space.

TODAY, What’s happening in CCV? A brown bag lunch conversation

Augsburg’s Christensen Center for Vocation is entering a new chapter, with a new vision for how this center can serve our students, the mission of our institution, and a growing network of faith-based community partners. We will be hosting two brown bag information lunches in the Augsburg Room on Nov. 20 and Nov. 26 from 12:00-1:00pm to share more about the direction CCV is heading.

Our center is deeply engaged with congregational contexts doing the work of vocational discernment centered on their neighbors and neighborhoods. In our new vision for CCV, these rich learning contexts can be combined with Augsburg’s unique approach to educating leaders who are informed citizens, thoughtful stewards, critical thinkers and responsible leaders. This will happen through a variety of initiatives, some new and some existing ones that are being re-imagined towards this more intentional vision. Our aim is to create mutually beneficial learning partnerships between students, faculty, ministry leaders, and congregations who share a commitment to being neighbor in real places with real people working to solve real world problems.

Sophomores: Phillips Scholarship Pre-Application Now Open

The Phillips Scholars Program recognizes and rewards private college students who strive to make life better for those with unmet needs. Applicants are challenged to think creatively and become community-service leaders.

A preliminary application (linked below) is used to select two finalists from Augsburg University who will then develop a full proposal to be submitted to the Minnesota Private College Council for the scholarship. This will include a 5-7 page project proposal, official transcript, and 3 letters of recommendation. Staff members of the Sabo Center will help finalists complete their applications.

Applicants must be a sophomore during the 2019-2020 school year.

Each year, projects must fit within a theme. This year’s application theme is “Addressing the Achievement/Opportunity Gap in Minnesota.”

Scholarship recipients receive $6,000 during their junior year, a $4,000 stipend while completing a summer project, and $6,000 their senior year upon successful completion of their summer project.

Last year, 3 of the 5 Phillips Scholar recipients were Augsburg students, and many Augsburg students have received the scholarship in the past. The Finance Committee have allocated $14,000 to be used for programs, projects, or any proposals/ideas that will impact students the most on campus. There is also $10,000 allocated to develop the area of Christensen Center.

These funds can be used by students and departments that directly work with students to benefit our Augsburg community.

Examples can range anywhere in the range of remodeling a section of a building space for ease of access for students and faculty, to wanting to add massage chairs to your favorite student space on campus. If you have a idea, a plan can be set in motion!

If you are interested the committee will require you to set up a meeting to talk more about your suggestions or send ideas by email.

Auggies compete in Data Analytics and Math Competitions

The Augsburg team of Dayton Danielson, Carter Duncan, Andrew Hotchkiss, and Bjorn Melin, were among the hundreds of students from regional colleges and universities participating in the fourth annual Minnesota Midwest Undergraduate Data Analytics Competition on Saturday November 9 at Optum Health in Eden Prairie accompanied by Prof. John Zobitz. Each team worked collaboratively to predict the price of soybeans from data curated by Farm Femmes, a local non-profit focus and agricultural technology. The team presented their work several times to business and STEM professionals.

Auggies Maxwell Bannister, Alexus Emory, Kong Lee, Zishuo Li, Hendrik Louters, Devonna Singer, and Brandon Sjostrand constituted three of around 80 teams from 25 colleges and universities in the North Central Section of the Mathematical Association of America to participate in their twenty-third annual team contest, with support from Profs. Matt Haines and Pavel Bělík. Each team hunkered down in the Hagfors Center on Saturday November 16 to work collaboratively on ten challenging mathematical problems in three hours. Results will be available in a few of weeks.

Parking Lot Enforcement Changes Planned

In an effort to gain compliance with our surface lot parking spaces, DPS will begin to “ticket and tow” all vehicles that are not displaying proper permits for the specific, designated lots. Primary hours of enforcement will be 8:00am – 4:00pm during the academic year. These increased enforcement actions will begin on Monday, December 2, 2019.
As a reminder, the Augsburg community has a number of parking permits that are valid for use in specific lots only. Drivers are permitted to park as follows:
Residential Students: Lots B and L
Commuter Students: Lots B,C, K and L
Faculty Staff: D, L and G
Carpool Permit holders: Designated spaces in Lot D

Other designated lots are for the following users and permits ONLY:
Lot A: Visitor permits
Lot E: Permitted short term-visitors (3 hour or less)
Lot H: Reserved/Designated
Lot J: Reserved/Designated

Top Chef Latinx: Register

The second annual Top Chef Latinx competition will take place on Tuesday, November, 26th from 5:30 to 7:30PM! Students will be asked to form groups of four and compete to create a Latin American dish with an array of surprise ingredients. Groups will be required to explain the dish’s cultural history and or tradition to the judges. There will be a prize for each person in the group. If you need help finding a group, let me know. Groups must register by November 22nd and be present during the entire event.

At Hagfors 108 during the times mentioned below, the space is held for everyone (within and outside of Augsburg) to use as a free and open kitchen space. We highly encourage students that reside in Urness Dormitory to check-it out as they don’t have a kitchen in their dorms.

Here there is a variety of ingredients, from seasoning to produce to butter, and materials, from pots & pans to spoons to stove-tops. We’ve also started holding food and cooking workshops for everyone to join us in.

Join Allyson Green and Lars Christiansen on a two-week exploration of urban environmental sustainability in Amsterdam and Delft, Netherlands in May 2020! We begin with several course sessions in Minneapolis in early May, and then depart for the Netherlands on May 7. We return two weeks later. There is so much to see and discover! We hope you join us.

My name is Kristin Van Dorn, and I am a user experience analyst at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. On Thursday, December 5, 2019, I am working with The University of Minnesota’s Learning Abroad Center to evaluate a suite of resources you may use in the future that will help you explore study abroad programs. Participants will receive a prepaid debit card valued at $50.

The sessions take place at our usability lab on the East Bank of the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities campus. Participants complete everyday tasks while sharing their thoughts and opinions. The team records your voice, expressions, actions on the computer, and what captures your eyes’ attention. We keep all participation strictly confidential within the team, and no one is personally identified in any results.

Starting next Tuesday, October 29, we will be launching our own Buyers Club branch here at Augsburg. This is a weekly produce subscription ranging from $3, $5, $10, & $20. Your subscription will help bring fresh produce to corner stores in the Cedar Riverside area. If you are interested in joining the buyers club please follow these step by step instructions to set up your subscription.

2.) Click the menu button in the top left corner of the screen and select “join the Buyers Club”.

We’re still looking for donations from student, staff and faculty. Due to several unusable/inappropriate donations, all donations must be dropped off at the Shop during open hours, and approved by a staff member. The items we are in need of are:

Farewell to Nicole Peterlin

It is with mixed emotions that we announce Nicole Peterlin is leaving Augsburg next week to pursue a fantastic HR leadership opportunity. Nicole started at Augsburg in 2014 as a temporary HR Assistant shortly after graduating from the University of MN Carlson School of Management and immediately proved to be an invaluable member of the team. During her 5+ years at Augsburg she moved quickly from HR Assistant into both HR Specialist and Generalist positions, and served the Augsburg employee community in nearly every aspect of Human Resources. Some of her many accomplishments include leading our award-winning Wellness program, serving as co-chair of Staff Senate, and taking on leadership roles on the Transportation Task Force in the development of yet another award-winning program to serve Auggies. In May of 2019, Nicole added graduating from Augsburg with her MBA to her list of achievements!

Nicole’s last day will be Friday, November 22. A farewell reception is scheduled for Thursday, November 21 from 1:30-3:00 PM in the Marshall Room. Please plan to join us in wishing her well in her new position as HR Director at Avenica!

URGO Academic-Year Research Application Available

Each year URGO offers $1,000 research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. These grants require 100 hours of research over the course of the academic year and are a great way to ease into research or to continue work on an existing project.

The application is available at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) at the “on-campus research” page. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals in the fall. The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly and will begin reviewing proposals September 23rd.

URGO Conference Travel Grants Available for Student Researchers

URGO offers up to $850 in travel funding for Augsburg undergraduates who have been accepted to present research at a professional conference. These funds can mitigate the high costs of travel such as airfare and lodging, and can contribute to students’ professionalization.

The application is available at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) at the “conference travel” page. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so students are encouraged to work with their research mentor to submit a travel application as soon as possible after receiving acceptance to a conference. The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly throughout the school year and will begin reviewing applications September 23rd.

“What Would You Do With $14,000?” – ADSG Long-term Project and Christensen Center funds available

The Finance Committee have allocated $14,000 to be used for programs, projects, or any proposals/ideas that will impact students the most on campus. There is also $10,000 allocated to develop the area of Christensen Center.

These funds can be used by students and departments that directly work with students to benefit our Augsburg community.

Examples can range anywhere in the range of remodeling a section of a building space for ease of access for students and faculty, to wanting to add massage chairs to your favorite student space on campus. If you have a idea, a plan can be set in motion!

If you are interested the committee will require you to set up a meeting to talk more about your suggestions or send ideas by email.

Join Allyson Green and Lars Christiansen on a two-week exploration of urban environmental sustainability in Amsterdam and Delft, Netherlands in May 2020! We begin with several course sessions in Minneapolis in early May, and then depart for the Netherlands on May 7. We return two weeks later. There is so much to see and discover! We hope you join us.

Social change agents need tools to access resources and to put their ideas into action. We are seeking highly motivated and creative individuals to teach and advise students entering grades 2 -12 for the summer of 2020 (June 22, 2020 – August 8, 2020). Our teaching staff works to inspire a younger generation of students through a curriculum of hands-on, project-based courses and electives in fields ranging from studio and performance arts to natural sciences, social sciences, math, and international development. In addition to teaching, EXPLO staff members live on campus and serve as mentors, activity leaders, and trip leaders.

Kelsey (Jim Trelstad-Porter’s daughter) will be on campus on Friday, November 22nd. Staff senators help foster and promote a positive and meaningful dialogue among staff, faculty, students and administration by advising in decision making processes, by serving as an advocate for staff, by promoting professional development opportunities, and by recognizing staff members’ contributions to furthering and upholding the mission and values of Augsburg University.

The commitment is for two years, with an optional third year. We meet every other week for approximately 60 to 90 minutes and help plan a number of staff-focused events, including informal tours, University Council updates, and the annual Staff Appreciation awards.

What’s Happening in CCV? A brown bag lunch conversation

Augsburg’s Christensen Center for Vocation is entering a new chapter, with a new vision for how this center can serve our students, the mission of our institution, and a growing network of faith-based community partners. We will be hosting two brown bag information lunches in the Augsburg Room on Nov. 20 and Nov. 26 from 12:00-1:00pm to share more about the direction CCV is heading.

Our center is deeply engaged with congregational contexts doing the work of vocational discernment centered on their neighbors and neighborhoods. In our new vision for CCV, these rich learning contexts can be combined with Augsburg’s unique approach to educating leaders who are informed citizens, thoughtful stewards, critical thinkers and responsible leaders. This will happen through a variety of initiatives, some new and some existing ones that are being re-imagined towards this more intentional vision. Our aim is to create mutually beneficial learning partnerships between students, faculty, ministry leaders, and congregations who share a commitment to being neighbor in real places with real people working to solve real world problems.

Course Description:
Many U.S. citizens know little of Guatemala and the struggles its people face although it is a nation that continuously finds its fortunes bound to the interests and intent of the United States.

This course invites you to hear Guatemalan people’s views of their country, to explore past and present US involvement, and learn from those who lived through and survived the civil war spanning four decades (1960-1996), as well as a new generation of writers and artists–all who creatively and peacefully counteract the culture of fear through art and literature.
This 4-credit course is part of the spring 2020 enrollment. It can be taken as part of, or in addition to, your usual course load, and overload fees incurred by this study abroad program will be waived.

Program cost $3,825

Course Description:
Art of Resistance will immerse you in contemporary Palestinian culture and invite you to learn directly from a wide range of artists in the region. You will have the unique opportunity to experience art and performance first-hand in diverse Palestinian contexts, from a day-long excursion to cultural sites in Ramallah to a conference call with artists in Gaza. A major component of the course will be ongoing cultural exchange with students from Dar al-Kalima University in Bethlehem. Augsburg students will also learn about the complex political, historical, social, and religious context for Palestinian art and theater through guided tours, performances, gallery talks, museum visits, readings, and discussions. Throughout these experiences, students will interrogate what it means to create art under occupation, explore various definitions of the “art of resistance,” and learn tools to make creative work that defies and reimagines the status quo.

Parking Lot Enforcement Changes Planned

In an effort to gain compliance with our surface lot parking spaces, DPS will begin to “ticket and tow” all vehicles that are not displaying proper permits for the specific, designated lots. Primary hours of enforcement will be 8:00am – 4:00pm during the academic year. These increased enforcement actions will begin on Monday, December 2, 2019.
As a reminder, the Augsburg community has a number of parking permits that are valid for use in specific lots only. Drivers are permitted to park as follows:
Residential Students: Lots B and L
Commuter Students: Lots B,C, K and L
Faculty Staff: D, L and G
Carpool Permit holders: Designated spaces in Lot D

Each year URGO offers $1,000 research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. These grants require 100 hours of research over the course of the academic year and are a great way to ease into research or to continue work on an existing project.

Jazz Ensemble “Salsa Week” Concert

The Augsburg Jazz Ensemble will transform into a “Salsa Orchestra” this Friday night, Nov 15, in Sateren Auditorium, 7 p.m. We will be featuring guest artists from Peru and Costa Rica performing and leading the band in standard salsa repertoire such as “Pedro Navaja,” “Un Verano en Nueva York,” “Juventud,” and other great songs by artists such as Hector Lavoe and El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico. This production is part of our ¡ALMA! (Augsburg Music in Latin America) series of concerts featuring Latin American repertoire and guest artists. Admission is free.

Orchestra ¡ALMA! Concert

On Saturday, Nov 16, 3pm in Hoversten chapel, the Augsburg Orchestra will present a mixed repertoire of works by Latin American and European composers. The program will open with the typical folkloric anthem “Amor de Temporada,” and a tender waltz from El Salvador, “Lagrimas de Amor.” The orchestra will also be sharing the stage with Costa Rican trumpet soloist Roy Barrientos in performance of the Eb Concerto by Jan Neruda. This concert is part of our ¡ALMA! (Augsburg Music in Latin America) series of concerts featuring Latin American repertoire and guest artists. Admission is free.
