Music Therapy in China: Summer study abroad program

submitted by yangss1@augsburg.edu

Study abroad for two weeks in summer 2018:
MUSIC THERAPY IN CHINA: CHONGQING BURN CAMP

Course options:
-MUS 374, -MUS 474, or MUS 582. It also fulfills Augsburg Experience

Music therapists benefit greatly from exploring the evolution of music from one generation to the next, the way in which music is integrated into everyday life, and its role in health, healing, and well-being in China. Through visits to hospitals, clinics, musical venues, conservatories, and community organizations that provide health related care, students experience the interplay of music and healing practices in China. Students also engage in direct dialogue with Chinese music therapists and other rehabilitation therapists. The program allows participants to reflect on their own musical roots, and to discover how their own musical preferences have developed based on cultural experiences. We will also visit other locations of interest such as The Great Wall, Old-Town Beijing, Dazu Rock Carvings, Yangtze River Cruise and more.

Applications are due March 15, 2018

Email abroad@augsburg.edu, or come and talk to the Study Abroad/Away Office for more details! We are located in Oyate Commons, in the lower level of Christensen Center.

Interfaith @ Cedar Commons: Lost In Translation

submitted by svanoe@augsburg.edu

“INTERFAITH @ CEDAR COMMONS: LOST IN TRANSLATION”
Next Thursday, Sept 28th 6:30-8:30pm

Religious language can carry heavy meaning. Some words hold sweet memories or deep significance for us, while other words might be associated with painful experiences, exclusion or just feel flat and dead.

Sometimes the language of our own cultural context does not translate clearly to people outside of our tradition. Even those within a religious tradition often don’t have access to the languages in which sacred texts were originally written. How much meaning is lost in translation?

Join us for a meal and an evening of discussion around the language of faith and all the complexity of communicating about deeply held values and beliefs.

Do you need to be a “person of faith” to come? Absolutely not. We welcome anyone with interest in conversation about how faith/spirituality shape our lives and intersect with the issues we care about.

Hosted by: Interfaith @ Cedar Commons organizer team and the Augsburg Interfaith Scholars.

(Cedar Commons, part of Augsburg, is at 2001 Riverside Ave. S – below Trinity’s offices)

Applications for Augsburg’s Mayo Innovations Scholar Program are now available on the URGO website! This program is highly competitive and is primarily designed for juniors and seniors.

What is MISP?
In the process of conducting research, Mayo Clinic scientists have developed new products that may be marketable. These products are submitted to the Mayo Clinic Office of Intellectual Property (OIP) for a thorough investigation of marketability. The OIP has a significant backlog of products to be investigated. New Copiers Installed Week of August 14

submitted by davenpoj@augsburg.edu

New copiers will be installed around campus the week of August 14. If you have a Canon copier in your area, it will be replaced by a Sharp copier. I think you will like the pull-out keyboard (in addition to the touchscreen) if you scan to other e-mail addresses and add a subject or notes to your scan. I think you will also appreciate the ease of using your fob to access the copier rather than entering a code, and having a one-touch button to scan to your e-mail. Training will be provided at the machine as soon as it is installed. You can share that training with others in your area who are not available or call the Copy Center at x1054 afterward to schedule follow-up training.

Installation schedule:
Monday, August 14 – Christensen Center, Urness, Mortensen
Tuesday, August 15 – Lindell Library, Oren Gateway Center
Wednesday, August 16 – Anderson Hall, Memorial Hall
Thursday, August 17 – Science, Sverdrup
Friday, August 18 – Foss, Music, Si-Melby, Kennedy, Ice Arena, Luther Seminary, and Rochester

Note that the Copy Center will be getting new machines too, so there may be a time early in the week where response time to your copy requests may be delayed.

Augsburg CSA Drop Site

submitted by gehrken@augsburg.edu

This summer the Augsburg community will have the wonderful opportunity to purchase fresh produce that will be delivered to Augsburg College in the form of a CSA share beginning mid-June. The share will contain a variety of seasonally appropriate produce. One can expect to find treats such as basil, carrots, cilantro, sweet corn, potatoes, peppers and tomatoes at some point over the summer. Delivery begins mid-June and lasts for 18 weeks or through mid-October. The food is grown on a 140 acre farm near Plato, MN. Purchasing local produce helps to support the local economy. The farmers who grow this produce are devoted to using only natural botanical and biological methods to control pests. They use other sustainable farming practices such as biodiversity, crop rotation, cover cropping and natural fertilizers to deliver healthy and nutritious produce to the table. More information about the operation and where to order can be found at https://www.tangletowngardens.com/tangletown-gardens/csa/

HISTORY: The choir, now in its 84th year, is one of Augsburg’s oldest ongoing organizations. For the past 37 years it has been the anchor ensemble of the college’s Advent Vespers which is attended by some 8000 people each year.

THIS NEXT YEAR: Mark Sedio (’76) will continue as conductor for this forthcoming academic year. In addition to his role at Augsburg, Sedio is Cantor (Director of Music) at Central Lutheran Church in downtown Minneapolis. He is a widely published composer, choral and organ clinician, stand-up comedian, teacher and a specialist in multi-cultural/world music. This forthcoming year the choir will not only focus on choral repertoire from Europe (i.e. Iceland, Slovakia, Germany, Estonia), the United States and Latin America – but will partner with the National Lutheran Choir and Palestinian ethnomusicologist Zafer Tawil for a program highlighting music of the Middle East and North Africa.

Student Wins Boren Award

submitted by shafer@augsburg.edu

Jubilee Prosser received the 2017 Boren Scholarship, $8,000 for summer language and cultural study in Tanzania, our first recipient ever, or at least within many years. Boren Scholarships provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad.

Jubilee is double majoring in biology and environmental studies while minoring in political science. A Presidential Scholar and Honor Program Participant, she also conducted URGO summer research with Dr. Emily Schilling, completed the River Semester and a 4-month study abroad experience in Kenya. Her long-term plans are to earn a Master’s of Public Health degree in epidemiology or environmental health. Because of her long-term goals, Jubilee has decided to turn down the Boren award to conduct research with epidemiologist Mark Travers at the Roswell Park Institute for Cancer Research in Buffalo, New York. She is considering applying for Boren again at the graduate level.

Boren Scholars represent a vital pool of highly motivated individuals who wish to work in the federal national security arena. In exchange for funding, Boren Scholars commit to working in the federal government for at least one year after graduation.

Boren has opportunities for semester ($10,000) to one year ($20,000) study abroad experiences for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as the shorter summer experience for STEM undergraduates. If you are interested in learning more about the program talk to one of our Boren Campus Representatives: (1) Andrea Dvorak, Assistant Director of Off-Campus Study, Center for Global Education and Experience or (2), Dixie Shafer, Director of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity (URGO). You can also visit http://www.borenawards.org.

Additional “All About Bias” Workshop Offered

submitted by reeck@augsburg.edu

An additional “All About Bias” workshop has been added in May!

“All About Bias” is a hybrid, group-format e-learning workshop that is a part of the Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program and provides an introduction to understanding and responding to unconscious bias in any workplace setting or interaction. Relevant to employees of all levels, participation in this workshop can positively impact all aspects of an organization. This workshop explores the hidden and pervasive nature of unconscious bias – how it works in the human brain, how it can impact workplace interactions and decisions, and how individuals can respond when they encounter it in themselves.

Farewell reception for Jim Gross

submitted by kaivola@augsburg.edu

I hope you will join me in thanking–and saying farewell–to Dr. Jim Gross, whose position as associate provost for academic innovation and strategic initiatives will end with the current academic year.

Jim’s last day will be May 12. A farewell reception in Rochester is planned for the last week in April – details will be shared soon. A reception is also planned in Minneapolis on May 3rd from 10-11:00 am in OGC 100.

We are working to ensure a smooth transition in Rochester and to ensure that the site has the leadership required to continue to strengthen our programs, partnerships, and presence in SE Minnesota. Until that leadership is secured, Ron Blankenship will serve as Interim Director of the Rochester site.

I am grateful for Jim’s commitment and service to Augsburg and for his partnership as a senior academic leader. He has helped develop a strategic plan for Rochester that aligns with Augsburg 2019 and focuses our attention on key priorities: (a) boosting enrollment in existing programs, (b) developing new programs that respond to the needs of the Rochester community, (c) enhancing the teaching and learning environment; (d) enhancing our reputation in SE Minnesota, and (e) positioning the College as a partner with a set of distinctive strengths in a community experiencing rapid growth and transformation. He has demonstrated keen awareness of emerging trends, a deep understanding of the contemporary landscape in higher education, and mature judgment when faced with tough questions. Perhaps most importantly, he has repeatedly shown himself to be a person of integrity, generosity, and character.

Academic program innovation that is aligned with our mission and institutional strengths, and responsive to the regional needs, remains a high strategic priority for the College. We remain committed to fueling the innovative and creative energies of our faculty, staff, and administration as we move forward.
