How to Identify Racism Video & Discussion

The May 2017 Faculty Diversity and Inclusion Institute will concentrate on select foundational principles of creating more inclusive classrooms and interactions by focusing on improving communication and conflict resolution across cultures and by improving the success of all students through culturally responsive teaching across majors.

Notes
● The Institute will be divided into a morning session and an afternoon session.
● Breakfast and lunch will be provided.
● Institute will be led by a faculty/staff collaboration.
● There are only 36 spaces available for the institute, and participants must register by using the link below. (A waiting list will be instituted if registration surpasses 36 participants.)
● Participation in the Institute counts towards a Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program requirement.
● If you have attended the Intercultural Conflict Styles Workshop, some information during the Institute may be repeated.

13 Colors of Resistance

Event featuring 2 amazing artists from Honduras… Melissa Cardoza and Karla Lara.

Friday, April 21st 1:50pm-3:00pm, Foss Studio

Melissa Cardoza’s book 13 Colors of the Honduran Resistance tells thirteen stories of women who joined the resistance to the U.S. backed 2009 coup d’etat. Melissa is an an afro-indigenous fearless journalist, poet, writer, and feminist organizer from Honduras.

Melissa will be touring with her fellow member of the Honduran Red de Defensoras or network of women rights defenders and beloved jazz/folk protest singer Karla Lara, who appears in one of the book’s stories and has been an icon and sharp voice for the resistance. Both of the women were close friends of Berta Cáceres, the Honduran indigenous leader and organizer of COPINH who was assassinated for her work in defense of the Lenca people and against patriarchy, capitalism and racism. This book and this tour are dedicated to Berta.

This is a key office support position supporting students who want to study abroad or study away in the US. Responsibilities in this position include: Peer Advising, library upkeep, office management, Event Promotion, Maintenance of online application system, and study abroad/away promotion through peer-to-peer outreach, class visits, tabling, and social media.

We can offer 15-35 hours per week this summer (depending on your schedule/needs) and/or starting in August. During the semesters, we offer 10 hours per week.

Focused Conversation on University Structure

The Nobel Peace Prize Forum is seeking students who can act as hosts for visiting students in the Fall of 2017 during the important event days. Students are asked to step forward as hosts to other college and university students who will be visiting the Twin Cities for the Forum from the 14th-16th of September. Students will be coming from all over the country (as far as Hawaii) and we may also have a few international students on campus.
If you know you are living on campus next Fall, then you would make a perfect host! Anderson, Luther, and Mortensen would make great spaces for visiting students to stay, but any on campus living area would be fantastic. We are looking for students who would be willing to help out and provide space for 2-3 nights.
As a host you will have the opportunity to get to know a student outside of Augsburg. It is a great experience that allows you to meet some new faces and contribute to the college’s rich academic community. You will serve as another student’s introduction to the Twin Cities, and have the opportunity to connect with non-Augsburg students.

Augsburg College offers a four and a half week general GRE prep course each summer for Augsburg students, alumni, and staff at a cost well below those found at private test centers (due to limited capacity, this course is not available for those outside of the Augsburg network). Banking The Unbanked

According to Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) data, more than 250,000 households in the Twin Cities, including approximately one-half of all black and Latino households, either do not have a bank account or use costly services such as check-cashing and payday loans.

Some financial institutions are discovering new markets as they begin to provide needed products and services to previously underserved populations.

Chris Farrell, host of Minnesota Public Radio’s Conversations on the Creative Economy, will discuss how organizations and financial institutions create products and services for markets traditionally not considered. Farrell and panelists will explore questions such as: Can financial institutions do good business while doing good? If some banks have figured out how to serve the unbanked, why haven’t all? What factors affect the ability of individuals to create wealth for themselves and improve the economic vitality of their communities?

Augsburg Alum Needs Litter Patrol Help for March for Science

Augsburg alum Amanda Lipsky has requested volunteers to help keep the April 22nd March for Science Minnesota route clean! Check out the message below and e-mail MarchForScienceLitterPatrol@gmail.com to sign up!

We need volunteers to join us at the start point of the march, Cathedral Hill, at 10:30am to form our Litter Patrol and prepare our march cleanup. We will provide bags to collect litter along the march route: separate bags for trash and for recyclables. Members of the Litter Patrol will collect litter as we march. After the march and rally, the Litter Patrol will pick up any litter at the rally site, the Minnesota State Capitol Mall. Our goal is to be environmentally responsible by ensuring the March for Science – Minnesota leaves the march route cleaner than we found it, and that anything recyclable is brought to a recycling center, not left in the trash. All the trash and recyclables that the Litter Patrol gathers will be responsibly disposed of.

FULL DAY: We need as many people as possible to commit to the full day, as outlined above.

If you have little time, small children to accommodate, or a bus home to catch there are two shorter shifts available for your convenience.

Shift 1: show up at Cathedral Hill at 10:30 and help with Litter Patrol until we reach the rally site at the capitol. Turn in your trash bags at the rally site. You can go home immediately after the rally.

Shift 2: Meet up with the Litter Patrol just outside the rally site at 12:00 Noon and get your trash bags. Stay to clean up after the rally for as long as you’re available and we need help.

We will be discussing creating a documentary to educate people about the pipeline. This documentary will include interviews with people who have been to Standing Rock. Brandon Williams is a current Sophomore at Augsburg. He is majoring in Political Science: Pre-Law with a minor in Economics and Communication Studies. Brandon represents
Augsburg on the Minnesota Association of Private College Students (MAPCS). He is a Act-Six Leadership scholar as well as a current Junior Senator for Student Government. A fun fact about Brandon is that he is the youngest of 7 children on his father’s side of the family, and oldest of 7 siblings on his mother’s side.

Kalyn McConnell is a current Junior at Augsburg. She is a Social Work major with a minor in Psychology. She is currently involved in the LEAD Fellows program at Augsburg. She is also currently Junior Class President for Student Government. She is also the secretary for the Pan Afrikan Student Union at Augsburg. And a fun fact about Kalyn is that she loves working with youth in the communities and she loves to watch and play basketball.

Brandon is running for President and Kalyn is running for Vice President.

Once elected as President and Vice President of Augsburg Day Student Government, our goals are:

1) We would like to strengthen the balance between the students and teachers privileges.

2) We help to increase extra curricular activities amongst students

3) To provide a safe space no matter what race, home or first language, ability, race,age, religion, sexual orientation, or national origin for students.

* Today’s idea of politics refers to what politicians, parties, and party members do. It is based on a Manichean model that sees politics as war-like, reducing others to stereotypes.

* The Manichean model is widespread, built into today’s politics and civic action. It grows from an identifiable formula which pits the forces of “good” against the forces of “evil.”

* It is increasingly dysfunctional for those committed to an inclusive, equal, and just society.

This symposium looks at the nonviolent alternative to demonizing politics. It includes small group discussion about problems we share, differences among us, and what we can do.

It addresses several questions:
* How can we combine relational power and public love?
* How can we develop the skills to meet injustice with discipline and dignity, not demonization?
* How can we bridge today’s ideological divides, engaging others in their full complexity?

Remember the famous Green by 2019 Climate Action Plan? It hasn’t been forgotten, but it has been reimagined as the UC Environmental Stewardship Committee’s new Environmental Action Plan! We have new goals, strategies, and initiatives for operations, curriculum, and campus culture, and we need your help in turning this reimagining into action. What’s in the Environmental Action Plan? How does your life here at Augsburg intersect with these commitments? Where do you see opportunities and challenges? Explore these questions with the ESC and find out if the rumors about composting, curriculum development, and bottled water are true! (Hint: they probably are).

Personal Document Destruction Event on Thursday, April 6

Faculty, staff and students are welcome to bring their personal confidential documents to a FREE Shred Event sponsored by Augsburg Facilities Management. Bring your materials (two boxes or bags maximum please) to the Shred Right truck parked between Sverdrup and Lindell Library on Thursday, April 6 between 8:30-9:30 a.m. You must present your documents at this time. We cannot offer early pick-up and storage of your personal documents. If you are not available at this time, it is your choice if you wish to entrust one of your coworkers to bring the documents to the truck for you. An Augsburg ID will be required, as we unfortunately cannot make this a community event.

Nimco Yasin rose to fame as part of a member of the legendary Waaberi Group in the 80s. Waaberi Group, or “Dawn Players,” was Somalia’s government-sponsored music and dance troupe that included the most talented singers, musicians, and dancers in the country. With more than 300 members over its 30-year existence, the group was a source of national pride and toured the world multiple times. Known for her striking voice and emotional love ballads, Yasin eloquently revives the vintage qaraami (or “Somali jazz”) sound that Waaberi was known for, while bringing it into a modern context.

Augsburg Forms University Events Department, Promotes Jodi Collen to Senior Director

I am pleased to announce that Augsburg has established a new University Events department within the Marketing division, expanding the responsibilities of the Event and Conference Planning team and promoting Jodi Collen to senior director of University Events.

We’ve all seen how the work of Augsburg’s event planning team — Jodi, Seth Lienard, Sarah Cash-Darvell, plus their hard-working student crews — has a major impact in enhancing the event experience and reputation of the College. As the new University Events department, this core group will continue to lead the design, planning and management of Augsburg’s more than 400 annual live events — including signature events such as commencement, homecoming, scholarship weekend, and the Nobel Peace Prize Forum. University Events will also continue managing summer conferences and other external events that generate revenue for the College.

In addition, Jodi’s new role will include strategic leadership and project management to support major universitywide initiatives. Two significant institutional initiatives that Jodi has already taken on are the name-change transition to Augsburg University this summer and project management for the 2019 Sesquicentennial Planning Committee, co-chaired by Theater Arts Professor Darcey Engen ’88 and Athletic Director Jeff Swenson ’79. We are excited to extend Jodi’s project management expertise to these highly visible Augsburg initiatives.

We are currently in the process of updating the Inside Augsburg directory and other records with the new University Events department name. In the meantime, please join me in congratulating Jodi on her new role and thanking the University Events team for its ongoing leadership in creating authentically Augsburg experiences for our students, alumni, guests and campus community.

Faculty Sabbatical Reflection Luncheon with Lars Christiansen

All faculty and staff are invited to attend the final installment of “Speaking of Sabbaticals.” Sociology professor Lars Christiansen will present findings from his resent sabbatical research (and beyond), focusing on the relationship between theories of embodiment and urban design and planning. His talk will include comparisons of several U.S. cities and focus on transportation policy and practices.

Faculty, do you wish you had uninterrupted time to write / work on scholarship? If so, you will want to take advantage of the annual Jessica Nathanson Scholarly Writing Retreat. Jess established a tradition of allowing faculty and academic staff time away from campus to focus entirely on scholarship. There is no schedule for this retreat – it is simply time and space to work on scholarship. The Provost and the Center for Teaching and Learning will cover the cost of the retreat.

The retreat will take place Sunday, May 21 at 3 p.m. through Tuesday, May 23 at 1 p.m. (after lunch). Please e-mail ctl@augsburg.edu to reserve your space.
