Lindell Library Digitizes “One Day in May,” 1968

submitted by vanclev1@augsburg.edu

Almost fifty years ago, following the assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Augsburg canceled class on May 15, 1968 for a day of listening and discussion that focused on racism in Minneapolis and beyond. Leaders from Minnesota’s black community delivered speeches about how racism intersected with economics, education, police brutality, politics, residential segregation, sex, and more.

The Augsburg audiovisual department recorded each session, and thirteen of the original recordings have been digitized by Lindell Library’s Digitization Lab to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Pan-Afrikan Student Union (PASU). PASU began as a consequence of the discussions that took place on “One Day in May” and will be celebrating its 50th anniversary later this week.

For more information about the Digitization Lab or Augsburg’s digital archives, please contact Stewart Van Cleve, vanclev1@augsburg.edu.

Conference Opportunity for Students on Faith, Science, and Youth Ministry

submitted by warnbers@augsburg.edu

Did Jesus Ride a Dinosaur?

It sounds like a silly question, but it gets at the heart of a problem that-according to Pew Research-leads a significant number of youth to abandon their faith: the perceived conflict between faith and science.

Yet, faith and science don’t have to be at odds. There are faithful, fruitful, and intellectually rigorous ways of putting the two in conversation-something that might just be a lifeline for youth.

So bring your curiosity and questions to Jesus Rode a Dinosaur: Faithful Youth Ministry in a Scientific Age, a conference on May 7-8. Speakers include: Krista Tippett, Mike Mchargue, Kendra Dean, Mark DeVries, Rozella Haydée White, Paul Douglas and Andrew Root.

Support for Associate Professor Mzenga Wanyama

submitted by rjohn@augsburg.edu

Yesterday, Associate Professor Mzenga Wanyama and his wife, Mary, had a check-in appointment with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The outcome of the meeting was that ICE has given the Wanyamas 90 days to depart the United States.

Friends and supporters of the Wanyamas, including members of the Augsburg community, Augsburg President Paul Pribbenow, and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, attended a rally outside the ICE offices before yesterday’s meeting. Earlier in the week, the offices of U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, U.S. Sen. Tina Smith, U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison, and Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton reached out to the assistant field office directors in the ICE office requesting that ICE continue to exercise its prosecutorial discretion in allowing Dr. Wanyama to stay in the U.S. to pursue a new J-1 waiver application and a motion to reopen based on changed country conditions in his home country of Kenya.

Following the meeting, Augsburg issued a statement from President Pribbenow. Click the link below to access the statement and additional updates.

Moody’s affirms Augsburg’s credit rating with a stable outlook

submitted by rjohn@augsburg.edu

Moody’s Investor Service has revised Augsburg University’s outlook to stable from negative and affirmed the University’s Baa3 credit rating.

Moody’s cited Augsburg’s improved liquidity, effective fiscal oversight, successful fundraising, diverse program offerings, and urban Twin Cities location as strengths supporting its credit opinion. The report also noted that Augsburg continues to operate in a highly competitive student market and has moderately high debt relative to cash and investments.

“This favorable outcome is a great accomplishment, and one we’ve worked hard to achieve,” said Augsburg President Paul C. Pribbenow. “It’s a reflection of Augsburg’s competitive strengths — including our distinct market identity and diverse enrollment — as well as our intentional, sustained efforts driving dramatic improvements in liquidity.”

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a nonprofit of Augsburg University. We provide debate programming to over 750 students in Minneapolis and Saint Paul, including our nearly 100 Spanish Debate League students.

We’re looking for debate judges for 3 tournaments this spring:

Wednesday April 18th – 3:30 to 7:30 PM
Wednesday May 2nd – 3:30 to 7:30 PM
Wednesday May 15th – 3:30 to 7:30 PM

Judges will observe rounds conducted completely in Spanish, determine winners for each round, and provide comments to help students improve their reading, critical thinking and Spanish language skills.

Participation in debate helps students improve their academic skills, including reading comprehension and critical thinking, and increases their confidence. Be a part of creating these outcomes for our Spanish Debate League students!

Today: Fulbright Information Session

submitted by obrienk@augsburg.edu

Fulbright Info Session:
Thursday, April 5th @ 5pm in Riverside Room (2nd floor of Christensen Center)
Food will be provided.

The Fulbright Student Program fully funds students to study, research, or serve as an English teaching assistant abroad for a year (no teaching experience required!). During their year abroad, Fulbrighters meet, work, live with and learn from the people of the host country, sharing daily experiences. The program facilitates cultural exchange through direct interaction on an individual basis in the classroom, field, home, and in routine tasks, allowing participants to gain an appreciation of others’ viewpoints and beliefs, the way they do things, and the way they think.

Past Augsburg students have been selected for Fulbright Awards to countries such as Czech Republic, South Korea, Ecuador, Malaysia, Peru, Turkey, Taiwan, and Germany (and more!), and 7 of this year’s applicants have been named semi-finalists. Augsburg’s focus on cross-cultural engagement and community involvement makes Auggies particularly strong candidates who are well-prepared to make the most of a Fulbright experience.

Join URGO for our Fulbright information session to learn more about the program and hear from past applicants. If you cannot make it to one of the sessions, please contact urgo@augsburg.edu or stop by Hagfors 101 to set up an appointment for April or May. The application opens in early April.

The competition is open to juniors, seniors, graduate students, and alumni in all fields, and a GPA of 3.4+ is considered competitive.
