For Native American Heritage Month, American Indian Student Services is sponsoring an Indigenous Book club where we will read A History of Kindness by Linda Hogan. Poems from Linda Hogan explore new and old ways of experiencing the vagaries of the body and existing in harmony with earth’s living beings. Throughout this clear-eyed collection, Hogan tenderly excavates how history instructs the present, and envisions a future alive with hope for a healthy and sustainable world that now wavers between loss and survival. We will meet on Monday, Nov. 7th from 5pm-7pm to discuss the book and have dinner. RSVP is limited to 20 people. Students, staff, and faculty are welcome to participate. Come join us in Sateren Auditorium tomorrow, Thursday, October 27th at 7:30 p.m. for an energetic and fun-filled evening! The Augsburg Jazz Ensemble becomes the Augsburg ¡Salsa Orchestra! to perform mambos, boleros, guanguancó, and salsa as part of a celebration of the musical heritage in the Americas and is joined by the Vocal Jazz singers and soloists Ashley Litzinger and Vincent Rosa-Chavez. We are also joined by Jonathan Alarcón from Honduras as a performer and as artist-in-residence. Accomplished in a wide range of styles and with his first love being jazz, Jonathan’s first appearance at Augsburg was as a member of Cienaños, a Honduran band known for their energetic performance and calls for social justice in Central America, as a part of the Nobel Peace Prize Forum in 2017. Don’t miss out!

Their research suggests specific areas in which we can make Augsburg even more appealing to prospective students and better able to retain our current students. The Augsburg Jazz Ensemble becomes the Augsburg ¡Salsa Orchestra! to perform mambos, boleros, guanguancó, and salsa as part of a celebration of the musical heritage in the Americas and is joined by the Vocal Jazz singers and soloists Ashley Litzinger and Vincent Rosa-Chavez. We are also joined by Jonathan Alarcón from Honduras as a performer and as artist-in-residence. Accomplished in a wide range of styles and with his first love being jazz, Jonathan’s first appearance at Augsburg was as a member of Cienaños, a Honduran band known for their energetic performance and calls for social justice in Central America, as a part of the Nobel Peace Prize Forum in 2017. We will hold an All Saints service in chapel November 2 at 10:40 am. The custom of commemorating all of the saints of the church on a single day goes back at least to the third century. At this service we remember the saints who’ve gone before us. We’ll also remember loved ones who have died, especially in this past year. We celebrate and remember through song and prayer. We currently observe a rise in new types and uses of
the classification of people with dis/abilities, especially targeting and marginalizing individuals at the transition stage. Othering and
problem-categorization are characteristics across educational settings and practices. They are taken up in everyday life to handle self and others, in ever-new rounds of medicalization, and generally as self-presentations in daily life, including career opportunities.
This implicates and challenges special education as well as other human sciences.

The Augsburg Jazz Ensemble becomes the Augsburg ¡Salsa Orchestra! to perform mambos, boleros, guanguancó, and salsa as part of a celebration of the musical heritage in the Americas and is joined by the Vocal Jazz singers and soloists Ashley Litzinger and Vincent Rosa-Chavez. We are also joined by Jonathan Alarcón from Honduras as a performer and as artist-in-residence. Accomplished in a wide range of styles and with his first love being jazz, Jonathan’s first appearance at Augsburg was as a member of Cienaños, a Honduran band known for their energetic performance and calls for social justice in Central America, as a part of the Nobel Peace Prize Forum in 2017. Don’t miss out!

We’re excited to announce a new on campus meeting for anyone in recovery (of any form), curious about recovery, or have loved ones who struggle with any form of addiction. It is hosted by StepUp students, but is in no way limited to only StepUp students or people with specifically substance abuse issues. This isn’t tied to AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) or NA (Narcotics Anonymous), it’s our own format and is completely fluid. We’re open to suggestions of any ways to better the meeting. Our focus is on providing a place to constructively process issues and work on spiritual development, whatever that may look like. For Native American Heritage Month, American Indian Student Services is sponsoring an Indigenous Book club where we will read A History of Kindness by Linda Hogan. Poems from Linda Hogan explore new and old ways of experiencing the vagaries of the body and existing in harmony with earth’s living beings. Throughout this clear-eyed collection, Hogan tenderly excavates how history instructs the present, and envisions a future alive with hope for a healthy and sustainable world that now wavers between loss and survival. Join us for a public event to honor the stories of the early Black community that lived, worked, raised their families, fought for the right to vote, and worshipped in Hastings, Minnesota. In 1890 they formed an African Methodist Episcopal congregation in Hastings, and in 1892 began worshiping in their own church, Brown’s Chapel. In 1907, Brown’s Chapel was destroyed by arson. There is no record of the crime being investigated, and the culprit(s) were never officially identified or charged. The church never reopened.
James Curry is a Hastings historic community descendent and chair of ‘Building Remembrance for Reconciliation’ (BT4R), a non-profit organization in Hastings dedicated to using history & the arts to remember, reconcile, and heal.

Peter Amnell Hendrickson, retired Professor Emeritus and former Director of Choral Activities at Augsburg University, died this past June.
Dr. Hendrickson was a member of the Augsburg University faculty from 1994 until his retirement in 2017, serving as the conductor of the Augsburg Choir and the Masterworks Chorale. He also served as Artistic Director of the annual Advent Vespers, a combination of music and liturgy involving over 300 singers, instrumentalists, and readers, presented by the Augsburg community each year at Central Lutheran Church. He led annual Augsburg Choir tours throughout the United States, Europe, and China during his tenure, and presented and commissioned world premieres by such noted composers as Steve Heitzeg and Kari Tikka. Dr. Hendrickson was an inspiring and charismatic teacher who influenced and encouraged many students over the course of his career.
A chorus of 90+ alumni & friends have organized to share music during the service.

The Augsburg Jazz Ensemble becomes the Augsburg ¡Salsa Orchestra! to perform mambos, boleros, guanguancó, and salsa as part of a celebration of the musical heritage in the Americas and is joined by the Vocal Jazz singers and soloists Ashley Litzinger and Vincent Rosa-Chavez. We are also joined by Jonathan Alarcón from Honduras as a performer and as artist-in-residence. Accomplished in a wide range of styles and with his first love being jazz, Jonathan’s first appearance at Augsburg was as a member of Cienaños, a Honduran band known for their energetic performance and calls for social justice in Central America, as a part of the Nobel Peace Prize Forum in 2017. Don’t miss out!

Feminist Book Club (FBC), located on Minnehaha Avenue just off Franklin Avenue, is the Official Bookseller for the National Women’s Studies Association conference happening in Minneapolis November 10th through the 13th. Keynote speakers are Anita Hill and Angela Davis (!) and FBC could use some volunteers to assist with getting books to the conference hotel in Downtown Minneapolis and other conference related activities. Volunteers will also have access to the conference the day they are volunteering if they would like to sit in on panels or presentations. We currently observe a rise in new types and uses of the classification of people with dis/abilities, especially targeting and marginalizing individuals at the transition stage. Othering and problem-categorization are characteristics across educational settings and practices. They are intertwined in policy, administration, evidence-based practices, and transition. They are built into pragmatically adopted social perceptions and marginalized procedures. They are taken up in everyday life to handle self and others, in ever-new rounds of medicalization, and generally as self-presentations in daily life, including career opportunities. This implicates and challenges special education as well as other human sciences.
Join us for a rich and meaningful conversation on individuals with dis/abilities’ rights, transition options, dreams, and hopes about the future.
