This webinar will detail the United States Peace Corps’ journey and approach to fostering working environments abroad in which both host country and U.S. staff can bring their full cultural selves to work.
The following questions will be explored:
– How does a U.S.-based organization adapt to host-country cultural norms and office practices?
-How much does the U.S. leadership shift to be effective and appropriate in their interactions and engagement with local staff and communities?
-How much and in what ways are host-country national staff expected to shift to work according to U.S. cultural norms?

It’s finals week and we can all use a little stress buster so why not start the week off by visiting with our four legged furry dog friends from Paws for Learning. Today from 10:30 – 11:30 am Paws for Learning is in the Center for Wellness and Counseling office located on the first floor of the Anderson Residence Hall. In addition, our furry friends will be on the Skyway level of Lindell Library (by the Gage Center). Plan to stop by and get a little stress relief. Course Description:
Many U.S. citizens know little of Guatemala and the struggles its people face although it is a nation that continuously finds its fortunes bound to the interests and intent of the United States.
This course invites you to hear Guatemalan people’s views of their country, to explore past and present US involvement, and learn from those who lived through and survived the civil war spanning four decades (1960-1996), as well as a new generation of writers and artists–all who creatively and peacefully counteract the culture of fear through art and literature.
This 4-credit course is part of the spring 2020 enrollment. It can be taken as part of, or in addition to, your usual course load, and overload fees incurred by this study abroad program will be waived.
***APPLICATIONS DUE DECEMBER 16***
Program cost $3,825
includes: international airfare, all meals, all lodging, all program activities and in-country transportation. There is no additional tuition fee for full-time undergrad students.

After 34 years, four positions, seven fundraising campaigns, 12 office moves and thousands of conversations with alumni, parents, and friends, Donna McLean has decided to retire from her work at Augsburg. Her last day will be December 20. Her time at Augsburg will be celebrated with a reception on December 12 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. (program at 4 p.m.) in the Arnold Atrium, Foss Center. The Office of Grants & Sponsored Programs is hosting an event series to support ongoing grant proposal development among faculty and staff. The next session is Thursday, December 12 (3:30 – 5pm) in Lindell 301. The topic is Managing Your Grant Budget. OGSP will cover budgeting during the grant proposal stage. Accounting will discuss managing your grant funds. An experienced grant fund manager will share pro tips.
During the second portion of the session, we will spend 30 minutes of quiet time for writing, consultations, and planning.

Join the 2019-2020 Interfaith Scholars Cohort for Interfaith Dinner and Dialogue: Stories of the Prophets. On December 12th at 6:30pm, we will be hosting an event with a goal of exploring the stories of the three Abrahamic religions’ Prophets. The event will be held at Augsburg University in Old Main, room 105. This event is one in a series of monthly events over the course of the year that aims to facilitate interfaith dialogue around a variety of topics. The purpose of this event is to explore the intersections of the prophets stories among different faith traditions. We would love to invite you as a listener and participant. This workshop provides participants with the tools, skills, knowledge, and resources to be intentionally supportive to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA) communities. Additionally, this workshop will cover definitions and terminology, tackle current issues and challenges facing LGBTQIA+ students, and practice skill-building scenarios. Finally, this workshop will help faculty and staff to develop and grow their inclusive understandings of gender and sexuality while creating and maintaining Augsburg spaces that affirm the wholeness of identities. Please Note: Those who attend Ally Training I will receive an ally placard that they may place on a visible surface near their Augsburg work area.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Approaches for Underserved Populations
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) approaches have typically been developed and implemented with middle class white populations. On Wednesday, December 11th, from 11AM to Noon at Sverdrup Hall Room 204, graduate students from Augsburg’s PsyD Clinical Psychology program will present posters summarizing research literature on modifying CBT interventions for individuals from four different underserved or nondominant populations–Muslim, Native American, lower socioeconomic status, and prison inmates. Course Description:
Many U.S. citizens know little of Guatemala and the struggles its people face although it is a nation that continuously finds its fortunes bound to the interests and intent of the United States.
This course invites you to hear Guatemalan people’s views of their country, to explore past and present US involvement, and learn from those who lived through and survived the civil war spanning four decades (1960-1996), as well as a new generation of writers and artists–all who creatively and peacefully counteract the culture of fear through art and literature.
This 4-credit course is part of the spring 2020 enrollment. It can be taken as part of, or in addition to, your usual course load, and overload fees incurred by this study abroad program will be waived.
***APPLICATIONS DUE DECEMBER 16***
Program cost $3,825
includes: international airfare, all meals, all lodging, all program activities and in-country transportation. There is no additional tuition fee for full-time undergrad students.

“The Minnesota Youth Climate Strike’s fourth National Strike will take place on December 6, from 3pm-5:00pm at the same time as other events happening globally. You can leave/join at any time – we will be having a teach-in at the Capitol rotunda.
The event will have a bit of a twist – we will be sitting in the capitol rotunda demanding that Tim Walz, Steve Simon, Julie Blaha, and Keith Ellison – the four Democrats who manage the state pension fund – divest from dangerous fossil fuel investments. We will have speakers, chants, action steps, and more! All ages are welcomed and encouraged to attend – we need all the help we can get if we’re going to fight the climate crisis!”

On December 12th at 6:30pm, we will be hosting an event with a goal of exploring the stories of the three Abrahamic religions’ Prophets. This event is one in a series of monthly events over the course of the year that aims to facilitate interfaith dialogue around a variety of topics. Originally from Minnesota, Dr. Tan came to us from Virginia Commonwealth University where he was a postdoctoral IRACDA Fellow. He is one of two biochemists (the other being Dr. Ben Binder) who are leading our new B.S. major in Biochemistry. His research expertise is in the area of bacteriophage gene expression and protein biochemistry. Light snacks and refreshments will be served.

Every year, the Augsburg Associates bring festivities to campus the first Friday after Thanksgiving with the annual Velkommen Jul celebration. Please join them Friday, December 6, from 11am to 1pm in the Commons to celebrate.
So how do you Velkommen Jul?
1. Enjoy complimentary Norwegian treats in the Commons including waffles, lefse and a lunch buffet from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
2. Wear your Norwegian sweater or bunad – find one at a thrift store!
3. Shop at the holiday boutique downstairs while enjoying some music
4. Worship with Norwegian music in the Hoversten Chapel at 10:40 a.m. for the annual Velkommen Jul services
Everyone (students, staff, faculty, and friends) is welcome to enjoy the sights, smells, and sounds of this campus-wide tradition and share in a piece of Augsburg’s heritage.

Lindell Library is graciously hosting English Professors D. E. (Doug) Green and James Cihlar, who will be reading their poetry in the Learning Commons (street level, Lindell) between 5 and 6pm TODAY, Tuesday, 3 December. Doug’s first collection Jumping the Median is available in the bookstore, and Jim’s new book The Shadowgraph is forthcoming this spring. There will be refreshments. Please join us.

MN Farming: The DIRT is a fitting follow-up to Minnesota Peace Initiative (MPI) spring dialogue, Climate Change Comes Home! The topic of regenerative agriculture is inextricably linked to climate change—a changing climate has direct impacts on crop yield, water use, biodiversity and soil health.
The agricultural industry will continue to face challenges that come with a rapidly changing environment, and the importance of regenerative agricultural techniques become increasingly essential with the threat of decreased food production.
