Juniors and Seniors: Live Abroad for a Year after College

submitted by obrienk@augsburg.edu

Fulbright Info Sessions:
Wednesday, April 4th @ 10:40am in OGC 112
Thursday, April 5th @ 5pm in Riverside Room (2nd floor of Christensen Center)
Food will be provided.

The Fulbright Student Program fully funds students to study, research, or serve as an English teaching assistant abroad for a year (no teaching experience required!). During their year abroad, Fulbrighters meet, work, live with and learn from the people of the host country, sharing daily experiences. The program facilitates cultural exchange through direct interaction on an individual basis in the classroom, field, home, and in routine tasks, allowing participants to gain an appreciation of others’ viewpoints and beliefs, the way they do things, and the way they think.

Past Augsburg students have been selected for Fulbright Awards to countries such as Czech Republic, South Korea, Ecuador, Malaysia, Peru, Turkey, Taiwan, and Germany (and more!), and 7 of this year’s applicants have been named semi-finalists. Augsburg’s focus on cross-cultural engagement and community involvement makes Auggies particularly strong candidates who are well-prepared to make the most of a Fulbright experience.

Join URGO for one of our Fulbright information sessions to learn more about the program and hear from past applicants. If you cannot make it to one of the sessions, please contact urgo@augsburg.edu or stop by Hagfors 101 to set up an appointment for April or May. The application opens in early April.

The competition is open to juniors, seniors, graduate students, and alumni in all fields, and a GPA of 3.4+ is considered competitive.

Jill Davenport retirement party on March 21

submitted by reissenw@augsburg.edu

It is a bittersweet feeling as I announce that Jill Davenport, Manager of Purchasing and Contract Services will retire Friday March 23rd after 8 1/2 years of dedicated service to Augsburg. Jill has been a wonderful Auggie working with great energy and enthusiasm! In 2016, Jill was honored with an Outstanding Staff Award for her fine work and service managing significant contract relationships for the bookstore, dining services and copy services. More recently, she facilitated a new policy to ensure that purchases were made with accessibility in mind, specifically with software purchases. I am especially grateful for Jill’s great work in stewarding the ACTC Purchasing consortium in-house at Augsburg, an important role that allowed us to keep this critical collaboration and formal engagement going forward. With only days to go, please take a moment to send Jill your good wishes for this next chapter of her journey. And, please come to a reception in Jill’s honor scheduled for Wednesday, March 21st at 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. in the Marshall Room of the Christensen Center. (Formal remarks will begin at 2:30 p.m.)

Support for Associate Professor Mzenga Wanyama

submitted by rjohn@augsburg.edu

Following is excerpted from yesterday’s email to faculty, staff and students regarding Associate Professor Mzenga Wanyama. The link provides updated information about the meeting today, March 9. Some of the information posted on social media yesterday was inaccurate, so please use the link below for the most recent information:

“[Yesterday], we learned that Professor Wanyama in our English department is facing a hearing with the local Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office tomorrow.  This is distressing news for all of us.  Mzenga is a valuable friend and colleague.  He and his family are important members of our community.

Many of you are asking what we might do to help.  We have marshalled our resources to provide both legal and personal support for Mzenga. To learn more, please go to this shared Google doc.

I know that we all stand with Mzenga and his family because that is what the Augsburg community does – for which I am most grateful!

Faithfully yours,

Faith & Doubt at Cedar Commons

submitted by svanoe@augsburg.edu

Faith & Doubt
Thursday, March 8th 6:30-8:30pm

This week we’re gathering for a meal and discussion about Doubt. A source of confusion or shame for some, and a route to liberation or valuable wrestling for others, we want to explore this part of the human experience. Is it good? Bad? Useful? Scary? Important?

What’s your relationship to faith and doubt? How do you navigate seasons where things that used to be clear for you, become more fuzzy and you have more questions than things about which you feel certain? Looking forward to the sharing of experiences and rich discussion.

6:30 Food and Speakers
7:30 Discussion

**Dinner (Pizza Luce) will be provided!**

Hosted by: Augsburg Interfaith Scholars and Interfaith @ Cedar Commons

Urban Studies film showing of “Koyaanisqatsi” TODAY

submitted by christil@augsburg.edu

On Tuesday March 6, 6:00pm in OGC 100, the Augsburg University Urban Studies Program will show the first of three films for our Spring Film Series: The amazing “Koyaanisqatsi” — a visual adventure with exceptional musical score. Food provided!
From the Rotten Tomatoes review: “Koyaanisqatsi is a Hopi word meaning “Life Out of Balance,” which is both the subtitle and the theme of this intriguing documentary. Godfrey Reggio has woven a hypnotic tapestry of time-lapse photography and Philip Glass’s trademark minimalist soundtrack, which drones the title every chance it gets. The viewer needs no voiceover to get the point: man is an animal spinning out of control and taking the planet with him. The film … is…an unforgettable cinematic experience.”
