Campus Share Shop at Augsburg, Check it Out

submitted by keenern@augsburg.edu

Members of the Environmental Stewardship Committee and Campus Cupboard are coming together to create a Campus Share Shop for the students of Augsburg! Our purpose is to create a space where students can check out goods they need, rather than purchasing new items. By doing this, we hope to:
-Reduce the consumption of material goods
-Reduce students’ costs
-Create a community space where students can take part in informal learning around sustainable practices and skill-sharing.

This is a project created by students for students, so we are reaching out to you to find out what you would want to see in the share shop. Please take a few minutes to take a short survey that will aid in creating a share shop that will properly serve the students of Augsburg.

The Sabo Center Needs Your Help

submitted by bouzardg@augsburg.edu

Dear Colleagues,

On July 10-12, the Sabo Center will be hosting a national conference on campus for the Place-Based Justice Network (read more about it by clicking on the link, below). As part of that conference, on Thursday, July 11, we will be having an evening reception hosted by the McKnight Foundation at their offices in downtown Minneapolis. We are looking for TWO certified athletic van drivers to drive conference attendees from campus to McKnight (downtown Minneapolis), running continuously from Foss Center to McKnight between 5:45-6:30p.m. and from McKnight back to Foss Center from 7:30 to 8:15 p.m.

You are welcome to attend the reception between the driving shifts, and we are offering a $25 gift card to each driver! You can also use community service hours if you choose.

Please respond to Green Bouzard (bouzardg@augsburg.edu) by June 21 if you are available and interested!

submitted by youngs@augsburg.edu

The theme: Dismantling White Supremacy – Its Power, Structures & Culture is the focus of this call for proposals for the fall 2019 Overcoming Racism Conference. Workshops will be offered two afternoons in breakout sessions lasting 90 minutes each. We expect our workshop presenters to create participatory and reflective opportunities for participants to be actively engaged and stimulated.

We seek workshops that enable participants to:

* Identify how white supremacy is embedded in the policies, practices, and structures of the criminal justice, education, housing, wealth accrual, medical, social service, and land usage systems
* Become familiar with tools, resources, and networks available to those who have committed themselves to removing the vestiges of white supremacy from these systems
* Discover ways to further the internal work each of us must do in order to effectively confront institutions long grounded in white supremacy
* Learn from each other about the work currently being done to dismantle white supremacy, and how we can replicate that work in our own communities
* Creatively envision a world without white supremacy in which everyone can flourish

In Memoriam: Gladys Strommen ’46

submitted by augpres@augsburg.edu

Dear Augsburg Community,

I am writing to share the sad news that our dear friend Gladys Boxrud Strommen ’46 passed away peacefully Monday night with family by her side.

Gladys and her husband, Clair ‘46, who passed away in 2001, served and supported Augsburg in significant ways throughout the years.

Through a generous gift, the family established the Clair and Gladys Strommen Center for Meaningful Work in recognition of their personal commitment to creating meaning and purpose in work and life.

They commissioned the Burning Bush sculpture in front of the Christensen Center and have two endowed funds: a scholarship fund and a program fund for the Strommen Center. Both Gladys and Clair served on the Augsburg Board of Regents and hosted many alumni gatherings at their homes in Minnesota and Florida. We will post the obituary and information about the memorial service, when it’s available.

Her loss is a big one, but her legacy will continue to be felt by generations of Auggies to come.

Paul C. Pribbenow
