The Director of Residence Life provides the vision, management, and direction for the department of residence life at Augsburg University. Provides leadership to develop and implement programs and operations that enhance the student experience for 1,000 students living on campus. Provides leadership and has accountability for meeting occupancy goals and linking residence life with student retention. Works collaboratively with other departments across campus to improve the student experience and occupancy in the residence halls through programming, safety initiatives, facilities maintenance, and recruitment of incoming and returning students. Active participant in the Division of Student Experience and Success and in other campus leadership groups and committees. Primary Responsibilities Oversees programming and daily operations that provide an engaged, student success focused experience for all students, both residential and commuter. Responsible for meeting University goals related to residence hall occupancy and auxiliary revenue, including partnering with the Admissions Office to bring incoming students to residence life. Establishes accurate occupancy, revenue reports and budget analysis. Aligns Residence Life operations and programming to enhance student retention and success, as well as partners with other offices to ensure the institution meets retention goals. Oversees the management of all room assignment-related tasks for new and returning students, mid-year room change requests, and communications to internal and external stakeholders regarding room assignments on campus. Engages in short- and long-range planning around effective and efficient residence life operations. Supervises residence life staff. Oversees residence life engagement with students around concerns and challenges, including working closely with other campus partners to make referrals as needed. Consults with the department of public safety, department of facilities, and dining services to address safety, facility, and meal plan issues. Manages communication with students and parents regarding concerns around the residential student experience. Oversees, evaluates, and assesses the residential facilities with the department of facilities, including communicating regularly with the Director of Facilities and the Custodial Supervisor to monitor residence hall maintenance, housing facilities issues and improvements, and housekeeping needs. Manages assessment efforts around residential student learning and student satisfaction with the residential student experience. Oversees, edits, and publishes the Residence Life Handbook All other duties as apparent or assigned by supervisor

URGO Offering Travel Grants for Student Researchers

URGO has a limited amount if travel funding to award this academic year. URGO offers up to $850 in travel funding for Augsburg undergraduates who have been accepted to present research at a professional conference. These funds can mitigate the high costs of travel such as airfare and lodging, and can contribute to students’ professionalization.

The application is available at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) at the “conference travel” page. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so students are encouraged to work with their research mentor to submit a travel application as soon as possible after receiving acceptance to a conference. The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly throughout the school year and will begin reviewing applications November 14th.

Participants Needed for Paid Psychology Skill-Building Study by November 18 (Earn Up to $35)

This research study (IRB #: 2022-32-03) is designed to compare two different skill-building training programs that may help college students develop adjustment-related skills. You are eligible to participate if you are a current Augsburg undergraduate student.

If you decide to participate, you will be asked to come to our Augsburg Psychology research laboratory for 4 sessions over the course of one month. The sessions include an initial orientation meeting and three sessions focused on one of two skills-building programs (you will be randomly assigned to one of the two–like a flip of a coin). Both programs involve mini-informational videos as well as experiential activities for you to complete. We will also have you complete a few personality measures. You will be assigned a peer coach who will work with you as progress through the study and guide you through the study components. Each of the sessions will last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Finally, we will check in one last time 3-months after the study is over for a brief online survey.

Participants will receive up to $35 for their participation. $5 for each of the first three sessions, and $10 for both the fourth session and the 3 month follow-up. Alternatively, Augsburg University Psychology students will receive up to $25 and 4 research credits.

First-Generation Survey for Augsburg Faculty and Staff

In recognition of First-Generation College Celebration Day (Nov. 8), the departments of TRIO Student Support Services, TRIO McNair Scholars, and Multicultural Life will be hosting events that highlight the first-generation college experience during the week of November 7. These events will be geared to students, but all of the Augsburg community is welcome to attend. More information will be provided in the upcoming weeks.

In addition to this programming, we’re asking faculty and staff to complete this brief First-Generation Augsburg Community Survey. New Staff Position: Area Coordinator, Residence Life

The Area Coordinator supports the Assistant Director of Residence Life with departmental planning, student leader selection and training, and student leadership and development. The Area Coordinator will provideessential leadership in crisis management, student welfare concerns, and administrative responsibilities relative to the operation of a comprehensive residential program.
Primary Responsibilities:
– Support the academic mission of the University within the residence halls through leading efforts around student learning/development, community development, and civic engagement programming.
– Provide leadership of a residential area, including supervision and evaluation of student leaders, including Resident Assistants and Leads.
– Advise and mentor individual students, provide support to students of concern, and conduct mediations between residents.
– Coordinate the development of programs and activities within the residential area; work with student leaders to develop a program vision, implement quality concerns, and track programmatic efforts including managing a programming budget.
– Direct overall housing operations in residential and office facilities within the area.
– Oversee secondary assignments within the office as determined by the needs of the department.
– Assist the department with tasks such as housing selection, student leader selection, and student leader training.
– Participate as part of the on-call duty rotation, including weekends and holidays, and respond to crisis and emergency situations.
– Work collaboratively with campus partners, including but not limited to facilities, public safety, and other student support areas.
– Serve as a hearing officer for student conduct cases, including communicating and enforcing student responsibilities.
– Perform other duties as apparent or assigned by supervisor(s).
Additional Examples of Work Performed:
– Participate in short- and long-range planning for the department.
– Serve on University committees and work groups.
– Familiarity with university and community resources for referral and outreach opportunities.
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
– This position requires the incumbent to live on campus in University provided housing.
– Typical work environment is an office, working at a desk for long periods of time.
– Regular phone and computer use.

Building Bridges: Somalia, Norway, Minnesota

Augsburg’s Partner, Norway House, invites members of our community to attend a conversation with Mohamed Abdulkadir of the Somali Organization for Human Rights and Integration Norway (SOMI).

Abdulkadir is actively working to build connections and bridges between Minnesota’s and Norway’s Somali communities.

This free event will shed light on the relationship between Norway and Somalia and the history of the Somali diaspora. Norway House will offer thoughts on the Norwegian-American experience and the work of Norway House.

New Staff Position: Maintenance Operator

The available schedule for this position is Monday – Friday,2:30 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.
The MaintenanceOperator is responsible for the general building/equipment maintenance and repair of a multiple-building, multi-level campus. The MaintenanceOperator will operate, maintain, and repair electrical, mechanical, and HVAC systems. The MaintenanceOperator will report malfunctions and maintain accurate and timely operating logs and maintenance records for building support systems.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILTIES:
– General Repairs: Perform general facility maintenance including, but not limited to carpentry, sheetrock, wall repairs, painting, interior finishes, ceiling, wall and floor tile, carpet repairs, door repairs hardware, locks & panic bars, and related clean up.
– Electrical Repairs: Perform electrical diagnostic trouble shooting, repairs / replacement up to the point of permit requirement for lighting, wall outlets, general motor replacement, and miscellaneous electrical equipment.
– Mechanical Repairs: Perform general mechanical repairs up to the point of permit requirements for all plumbing fixtures, iron and sheet metal work, miscellaneous pipe fittings, and general mechanical equipment repairs and pump repairs.
– HVAC Repairs: Perform general mechanical repairs and preventive maintenance on all HVAC related equipment including belt replacement, filter replacement, parts replacement, refrigerant reclamation, related water system maintenance, fitting lubrication, miscellaneous repairs, record keeping, and general equipment/equipment area cleaning.
– All other miscellaneous responsibilities as assigned as it relates to general maintenance of the College campus facilities and grounds.
– All other duties as apparent or assigned by supervisor(s).
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
– Ability to lift 80 pounds.
– Continuous standing, walking, lifting, bending, stretching, kneeling and squatting and using fine motor skills.
– Exposure to temperature, noise, irritating substances and poor ventilation at times.

URGO Offering Travel Grants for Student Researchers

URGO has a limited amount if travel funding to award this academic year. URGO offers up to $850 in travel funding for Augsburg undergraduates who have been accepted to present research at a professional conference. These funds can mitigate the high costs of travel such as airfare and lodging, and can contribute to students’ professionalization.

The application is available at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) at the “conference travel” page. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so students are encouraged to work with their research mentor to submit a travel application as soon as possible after receiving acceptance to a conference. The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly throughout the school year and will begin reviewing applications November 14th.

AYTI practices place-based vocational discernment connected to a specific theme. In recognition of First-Generation College Celebration Day (Nov. 8), the departments of TRIO Student Support Services, TRIO McNair Scholars, and Multicultural Life will be hosting events that highlight the first-generation college experience during the week of November 7. These events will be geared to students, but all of the Augsburg community is welcome to attend. More information will be provided in the upcoming weeks.

In addition to this programming, we’re asking faculty and staff to complete this brief First-Generation Augsburg Community Survey. The information collected will be used to create ongoing resources and support for first-generation students here at Augsburg. Please provide as much information as you’re comfortable sharing.

Campus Kitchen’s Give To The Max Campaign

We are thrilled to have already raised $2,656 — 29% of our goal!

For Give to the Max Day this year, we are raising funds for two important programs: The Augsburg Campus Cupboard and our Cedar-Riverside food justice initiatives.

Augsburg University has, over the past decade, become a school that serves a student body that is more diverse and lower-income than our neighboring state schools, and where the burden of food insecurity on students is significantly affecting their capacity to benefit from the studies in which they are investing so much of their familial resources.

The Campus Cupboard is open four days per week to all Augsburg students and recent alumni. There are no item limits; students can take as much food as they need for themselves and their families. In 2019, an average of 50 students visited the Campus Cupboard to pick up free groceries each week. In 2022, that average increased to 220 students per week. We regularly receive feedback from our students that the groceries we provide make a huge difference for their families’ ability to access high-quality, healthy foods. Many students and their families in the Twin Cities Metro Area now see this service as a key piece of meeting their basic food needs.

In order to expand this work, we are seeking funds to purchase culturally appropriate food items for our diverse student population. Because our program operates on a small budget, we rely primarily on recovered food items, which limits choice and thus our ability to meet students’ specific needs.

A $30 donation provides one grocery bag with culturally-appropriate foods for an Auggie. Your donation will make a significant difference in our ability to meet the growing and diverse food needs of Augsburg’s student body and our neighbors in Cedar Riverside. Sylvia Ann Sabo (Nee Lee), 85, Passed Away On October 26

Sylvia Ann Sabo (nee Lee), 85, passed away on October 26, 2022.

Sylvia attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN, and became a registered nurse. Her close connection to Augsburg began when she returned to Minneapolis, after spending a year as a traveling nurse, and married her husband, Martin Olav Sabo ’59.

The Sabo Center for Citizenship and Learning was founded on lessons that come from Sylvia and Martin’s work.

In 2014, the Center for Democracy and Citizenship and the Sabo Center were combined into a single entity, bringing together these two traditions of public service and citizen engagement.

Today, the Sabo Center for Democracy and Citizenship is recognized for its innovative leadership in democracy education, public work philosophy, experiential learning, and place-based engagement.

The funeral service will be held on Monday, Nov. 7, at Lakewood Cemetery Chapel, 10:00 AM, followed by a brunch and interment.

Participants Needed for Paid Psychology Skill-Building Study by November 18 (Earn Up to $35)

This research study (IRB #: 2022-32-03) is designed to compare two different skill-building training programs that may help college students develop adjustment-related skills. You are eligible to participate if you are a current Augsburg undergraduate student.

If you decide to participate, you will be asked to come to our Augsburg Psychology research laboratory for 4 sessions over the course of one month. The sessions include an initial orientation meeting and three sessions focused on one of two skills-building programs (you will be randomly assigned to one of the two–like a flip of a coin). Both programs involve mini-informational videos as well as experiential activities for you to complete. We will also have you complete a few personality measures. You will be assigned a peer coach who will work with you as progress through the study and guide you through the study components. Each of the sessions will last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Finally, we will check in one last time 3-months after the study is over for a brief online survey.

Participants will receive up to $35 for their participation. $5 for each of the first three sessions, and $10 for both the fourth session and the 3 month follow-up. Alternatively, Augsburg University Psychology students will receive up to $25 and 4 research credits.

Thank You for Salsa Night and Garífuna Drum Workshops

The Department of Languages and Cross-Cultural Studies and the Global Twin Cities Scholars Program wishes to thank professors Rafael Rodríguez and Kate Reinhardt for bringing jazz percussionist Jonathan Alarcón from Tegucigalpa, Honduras to our campus for a month to enrich and inform our music program, our Spanish classes, and Global Twin Cities AugSem about Garífuna Afroíndignous music and culture with hands-on experiential learning through Afro caribbean jazz workshops.

We are deeply grateful to Jonathan Alarcón, jazz percussionist whose presence on campus immersed our students in Spanish language and Honduran culture as he led master classes with the Augsburg Jazz band. We wish to thank Prof. Rafael Rodríguez, director of the jazz orchestra who organized Augaburg’s amazing evening of Latin American Salsa Night, featuring Jonathan’s percussion, and who coordinated master classes for Augsburg students to study with him in preparation for the concert.

Thank you to everyone in the Augsburg community who hosted and attended workshops, master classes, and concerts to hear and learn about Honduran Garifuna / Afro-Caribbean instruments and rhythms.

We wish Jonathan safe travels back to Honduras and extend our deepest thanks to Prof. Kate Reinhardt and Prof. Rafael Rodriguez for your extraordinary work to make this semester of Afroíndignous jazz music possible for our community.

We invite you to join Women in STEM (WIS) for a meet and greet TODAY, 6-7pm in Hagfors 108 (aka the Food Lab). This is an opportunity to introduce yourself, get to know other members, and have a casual and open discussion of our goals, hopes, and challenges. Snacks will be provided!

About WIS: WIS at Augsburg is open to all people who support women and other minority groups within STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics). Although women are graduating with science degrees in increasing numbers, their count diminishes by the time they reach the workforce and representation is even less at more senior levels. Some of the identified reasons for the prominent disparity in the STEM workforce include a variety of obstacles that women face at different stages of their lives and careers. Fixing some of these “broken rungs” in the “ladder to success” can contribute toward achieving gender parity. Augsburg’s WIS group is made of students and faculty with this goal to create community support regarding disparities in the STEM field. It supports and organizes activities that bridge professional, personal, and cultural enrichment such as hosting networking and career development events where students can find mentors, listening to “success” stories, and meeting with professionals. Learning about existing disparities and practices to tackle in STEM can help students talk about and address various successes and challenges in their educational endeavors and in future workplaces.

Open Enrollment begins Monday, November 7 and continues through Friday, November 18. This is the only time of year outside of a qualifying life event when benefits-eligible employees may elect or change their benefit options, connect with the informative resources to help make the best decisions to meet their needs and enroll for the coming year.

During open enrollment, no action means no coverage. Employees who fail to act by November 18 will not have coverage effective January 1, 2023, and should wait until the next open enrollment period to elect coverage, unless a qualifying life event occurs.

All benefits-eligible employees are encouraged to attend open enrollment information sessions to learn more.

Hello STEM Students and Faculty,

We invite you to join Women in STEM (WIS) for a meet and greet on Thursday, 11/3, 6-7pm in Hagfors 108 (aka the Food Lab). This is an opportunity to introduce yourself, get to know other members, and have a casual and open discussion of our goals, hopes, and challenges. Snacks will be provided!

About WIS: WIS at Augsburg is open to all people who support women and other minority groups within STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics). Although women are graduating with science degrees in increasing numbers, their count diminishes by the time they reach the workforce and representation is even less at more senior levels. Some of the identified reasons for the prominent disparity in the STEM workforce include a variety of obstacles that women face at different stages of their lives and careers. Fixing some of these “broken rungs” in the “ladder to success” can contribute toward achieving gender parity. Augsburg’s WIS group is made of students and faculty with this goal to create community support regarding disparities in the STEM field. It supports and organizes activities that bridge professional, personal, and cultural enrichment such as hosting networking and career development events where students can find mentors, listening to “success” stories, and meeting with professionals. Learning about existing disparities and practices to tackle in STEM can help students talk about and address various successes and challenges in their educational endeavors and in future workplaces.

First-Generation Survey for Augsburg Faculty and Staff

In recognition of First-Generation College Celebration Day (Nov. 8), the departments of TRIO Student Support Services, TRIO McNair Scholars, and Multicultural Life will be hosting events that highlight the first-generation college experience during the week of November 7. These events will be geared to students, but all of the Augsburg community is welcome to attend. More information will be provided in the upcoming weeks.

In addition to this programming, we’re asking faculty and staff to complete this brief First-Generation Augsburg Community Survey. The information collected will be used to create ongoing resources and support for first-generation students here at Augsburg. Please provide as much information as you’re comfortable sharing.

We are taking nominations for the month of November!

The Auggie Pride Awards are part of a peer recognition program that honors individual staff members who have made a significant contribution to department, division, or University-wide goals. All nominations are submitted through an online form and considered by Staff Senate. Nominations are kept on a rolling basis throughout the Academic Year, and awards are distributed to two staff every month.

Those honored will receive a letter from Staff Senate (including some text from the nomination letters) and a $25 Visa gift card as a token of our appreciation.

Gratitude and Goodies at the Gage Desk

Participants Needed for Paid Psychology Skill-Building Study (Earn Up to $35)

This research study (IRB #: 2022-32-03) is designed to compare two different skill-building training programs that may help college students develop adjustment-related skills. You are eligible to participate if you are a current Augsburg undergraduate student.

If you decide to participate, you will be asked to come to our Augsburg Psychology research laboratory for 4 sessions over the course of one month. The sessions include an initial orientation meeting and three sessions focused on one of two skills-building programs (you will be randomly assigned to one of the two–like a flip of a coin). Both programs involve mini-informational videos as well as experiential activities for you to complete. We will also have you complete a few personality measures. You will be assigned a peer coach who will work with you as progress through the study and guide you through the study components. Each of the sessions will last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Finally, we will check in one last time 3-months after the study is over for a brief online survey.

Participants will receive up to $35 for their participation. $5 for each of the first three sessions, and $10 for both the fourth session and the 3 month follow-up. Alternatively, Augsburg University Psychology students will receive up to $25 and 4 research credits.

Auggie Pride Recipients for October: Jad Habib and Emilie Lenz

Congratulations to our Auggie Pride Award winners for the month of October: Jad Habib – Administrative Liaison for Computing and Emilie Lenz – Financial Aid Counselor.

Regarding Jad: “Right now he is working with a ton of staff that need new computers that we don’t even know half of what we need when we meet with Jad to switch everything out. I think Jad deserves this award as he brings a happiness to this stressful time and goes out of his way to made it seamless. This includes dropping by to help our student workers and ourselves at the drop of a hat (I swear he is always running around) and finding new tricks and tips for us for an easier time helping students. I could not think of someone better for this honor.”

Regarding Emilie: “Emilie went above and beyond to help an incoming student this fall and played a major role in helping the student move forward in attending Augsburg. A graduate student was at risk of deferring enrollment a full year because she was navigating some added challenges with financial aid eligibility. Emilie was patient, reassuring, knowledgeable, and resourceful in working with this student. She went out of her way to reach out to other campus partners to advocate for the student and ensure we exhausted all options available to help support the student in gaining the funding needed to attend school this fall.”

For Give to the Max Day this year, we are raising funds for two important programs: The Augsburg Campus Cupboard and our Cedar-Riverside food justice initiatives. Today I’d like to tell you a bit more about Cedar-Riverside (CR), a vibrant and diverse community in which we are proud to serve as an anchor institution.

With over 8,000 residents speaking around 100 different languages, Cedar-Riverside (CR) is on land originally inhabited by Dakota people. CR residents consistently identify wellness, food, and social connectedness as areas of opportunity, as many residents suffer from a range of health issues, including hunger, obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

Interfaith@Augsburg welcomes Jane Ulring as our new Managing Director. Our executive director, Najeeba Syeed shares, “Jane was the ideal choice with her deep commitment and experience in our campus, community and national contexts. She is a wonderful addition to our staff and will expand our capacity to offer new and innovative interfaith programming.”
Jane Ulring is a graduate of Augsburg University where she earned her BA in Philosophy, and Union Theological Seminary (UTS) where she completed her Master of Divinity in Social Ethics.
Jane’s personal passions lie at the intersection of interfaith activism, care for creation, and mutual healing from colonial violence. Since 2021, Jane has been the Program Manager for Interfaith America. She is excited to return to Augsburg in service of the university community, and welcomes the opportunity to strengthen Augsburg’s commitment to building a thriving religiously diverse commons.
Jane’s portfolio will include campus based, Twin Cities and regional programming. She will be developing partnerships with congregational and community entities. She is also committed to a diverse interfaith table that includes a wide range of traditions, communities and forms of practice and belief. Jane says, “I am excited to join Interfaith@Augsburg as Managing Director. Accepting this position is a blessed home-coming of sorts for me. The values of service and justice instilled in me during my college years at Augsburg are what first sparked my passion for interfaith work. First-Generation Survey for Augsburg Faculty and Staff

In recognition of First-Generation College Celebration Day (Nov. 8), the departments of TRIO Student Support Services, TRIO McNair Scholars, and Multicultural Life will be hosting events that highlight the first-generation college experience during the week of November 7. These events will be geared to students, but all of the Augsburg community is welcome to attend. More information will be provided in the upcoming weeks.

In addition to this programming, we’re asking faculty and staff to complete this brief First-Generation Augsburg Community Survey. The information collected will be used to create ongoing resources and support for first-generation students here at Augsburg. Please provide as much information as you’re comfortable sharing.

Students – don’t forget about TutorMe! It is available to Augsburg students 24/7 and offers tutoring in over 300 subjects from qualified tutors. Students are able to use 3 hours a week; 3 one hour sessions or 6 thirty-minute sessions. You can access TutorMe through any of your Moodle classes. At the top left of your screen there is an orange tab to see the side panel of resources. As you scroll down, you will see the “Augsburg Tools” section and underneath is the link to TutorMe. Memorialize the Movement Volunteer Opportunities

Memorialize the Movement (MTM) is a grassroots organization that was created in the wake of the murder of George Floyd by the Minneapolis Police Department and the protests that followed on May 25th, 2020. MTM was born from the need to address the lack of racial and economic justice in the city of Minneapolis. When it became clear that there was no plan for the collection and preservation of the plywood murals made by 2020 protesters and mourners, MTM’s founder, Leesa Kelly, took on the responsibility of collecting as many of these artworks as possible so that the Black and Brown stories they told would not be lost.

Participants Needed for Paid Psychology Skill-Building Study (Earn Up to $35)

This research study (IRB #: 2022-32-03) is designed to compare two different skill-building training programs that may help college students develop adjustment-related skills. You are eligible to participate if you are a current Augsburg undergraduate student.

If you decide to participate, you will be asked to come to our Augsburg Psychology research laboratory for 4 sessions over the course of one month. The sessions include an initial orientation meeting and three sessions focused on one of two skills-building programs (you will be randomly assigned to one of the two–like a flip of a coin). Both programs involve mini-informational videos as well as experiential activities for you to complete. We will also have you complete a few personality measures. You will be assigned a peer coach who will work with you as progress through the study and guide you through the study components. Each of the sessions will last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Finally, we will check in one last time 3-months after the study is over for a brief online survey.

Participants will receive up to $35 for their participation. $5 for each of the first three sessions, and $10 for both the fourth session and the 3 month follow-up. Alternatively, Augsburg University Psychology students will receive up to $25 and 4 research credits.
