The last day to charge in-store purchases is Wednesday, January 19th, 2022. Due to the financial aid cycle, you can only charge expenses to your bookstore account during this specific period. Student Stress and Coping Study

Between the COVID-19 pandemic, political turmoil, and growing racial injustice in our country, the past year and a half have been full of unique challenges. We invite you to participate in a study examining student experiences and mental health during the pandemic and following the murder of George Floyd.

To better understand student experiences and mental health during this time, sociology professor James Vela-McConnell is conducting a study of current, degree-seeking undergraduate and graduate students. This study involves a 20-to-30-minute, mostly multiple-choice online questionnaire which can be completed at your convenience. Participation in the questionnaire will be completely confidential, and automatically enter you into a raffle for one of three $100 gift cards, one of six $50 gift cards, or one of eight $25 gift cards from Target. A report based on this study may also be shared with the Center for Wellness and Counseling at Augsburg to allow them to better serve the mental health needs of students.

Register Your Spring Internship

Have you secured a Spring Internship? If yes, consider registering your experience!
Last day to add a course for Spring is January 18th.

Internship registration is a two-step process. Fill out the Internship Site Agreement Form and the Internship Registration Form on the Strommen Center website to get credit/the Augsburg Experience graduation requirement.

Students earning credit in their major need to meet with their faculty adviser first to get approval and learn what academic work will be required. Submission of this work to the faculty supervisor is necessary before receiving credit.

Students should register their internship before starting their hours – this includes zero credit Augsburg Experience internships. Please contact strommen.internships@augsburg.edu with internship-related questions.

Student Stress and Coping Study

Between the COVID-19 pandemic, political turmoil, and growing racial injustice in our country, the past year and a half have been full of unique challenges. We invite you to participate in a study examining student experiences and mental health during the pandemic and following the murder of George Floyd.

To better understand student experiences and mental health during this time, sociology professor James Vela-McConnell is conducting a study of current, degree-seeking undergraduate and graduate students. This study involves a 20-to-30-minute, mostly multiple-choice online questionnaire which can be completed at your convenience. Participation in the questionnaire will be completely confidential, and automatically enter you into a raffle for one of three $100 gift cards, one of six $50 gift cards, or one of eight $25 gift cards from Target. A report based on this study may also be shared with the Center for Wellness and Counseling at Augsburg to allow them to better serve the mental health needs of students.

Please join me in congratulating Stewart Van Cleve on a well earned promotion to Associate Director, Lindell Library. In his new role, Stewart will have broad oversight for our digital and physical archives, Idun, and the “back of the house” functions (for you library geeks, that includes cataloging, acquisitions, and electronic resource management).

In his four years at Augsburg, Stewart has assumed an increasingly larger leadership role within the library and his new position provides him with even more opportunities to exercise his natural leadership skills. We are very excited to see what he does next!

Augsburg isn’t able to host a flu shot event due to staffing shortages this year, but the People’s Center Clinic on the corner of Riverside and 20th avenues is providing flu vaccinations during its open hours and welcomes members of the Augsburg community to make an appointment to get their shot. Charging Books to Your Student Account? Here’s What you Need to Know

Bookstore charge accounts will open the day after you’ve registered for spring term. The last day to charge online orders is Sunday, January 16th, 2022. The last day to charge in-store purchases is Wednesday, January 19th, 2022. Due to the financial aid cycle, you can only charge expenses to your bookstore account during this specific period, including Time 2 courses. Be sure to plan ahead!

Free Media Training for Women Interested in Politics

Ready to Run Minnesota, which is part of a national network of nonpartisan campaign training programs designed to encourage women to run for office and to encourage all of us to support increased representation of women in politics. This year, there will be a series of monthly (October-February) virtual training sessions over the lunch hour on Fridays. You will learn about fundraising, receive media training, and gain other important skills…all for free.

The next session is Friday, November 5th at noon and will cover strategies for dealing with the media.

Congrats Auggies – Student Voting Rates Went Up

Every four years the Institute for Democracy and Higher Education publishes reports on voting rates for colleges and universities, and the 2020 report just came out last week. Augsburg’s report shows that our student voting rate went up 3.7% from 2016 to 2020, and 77.3% of eligible Augsburg students voted compared to 66% of college and university students nationwide.

Let’s keep our numbers growing as we demonstrate high participation in this aspect of civic engagement. Remember: tomorrow is the last day to vote in the 2021 elections, and you can register the same day.

LearningWorks is a chapter within Breakthrough Collaborative which comprises 25 sites across the country. Its overall mission is to launch high potential middle school students on the path to college, while also inspiring talented high school and college students to pursue careers in education.

At LearningWorks, we achieve this mission by using a “students-teaching-students” model. During our 9 weeks of summer programming, 35 talented high school and college students work as teachers, advisors, and mentors for 120 middle school students from Minneapolis Public Schools. LearningWorks teachers are creative, diverse, intelligent, and highly motivated. They represent many academic and personal backgrounds, but share a commitment to students and educational equity. LearningWorks is a Breakthrough site in the heart of downtown Minneapolis. Every summer, it offers:

· 100+ hours of professional development
· 65 hours of lead classroom teaching
· Autonomy to develop your own curriculum and course content
· Leadership opportunities in committee-structures and program planning
· Your own classroom for 6 intensive weeks
· Coaching and mentorship from experienced and licensed teachers
· Small classes of 8-12 students
· $2,500 stipend & housing options

Mary Elise Lowe, Professor of Religion, named Batalden Scholar

It is my pleasure to announce that Mary Elise Lowe, professor of religion, has been named the next Batalden Faculty Scholar in Applied Ethics. Mary’s appointment will take effect with the Spring 2022 semester.

Mary’s focus as Batalden Scholar will be on “embodied ethics” – an expansive category that includes traditional sexual ethics as well as questions of embodiment that are often excluded from traditional Christian ethics. These include inquiries regarding the ways humans relate to other creatures as well as intersectional topics such as disability/ability, race, body image, and human relationships. Mary brings an interest in convocations that feature multiple perspectives and panels of speakers and sees opportunities to engage questions of embodied ethics across the disciplines. She hopes to create a working group for faculty who are interested in integrating embodied ethical reflection into upper-division courses and will seek ways to create new space for ethics conversations among Augsburg staff and within our student services community.

The Batalden Faculty Scholar Program in Applied Ethics is designed to strengthen the infusion of ethics and values into our campus lives, so that ethical discourse and practice is enhanced as a hallmark of Augsburg’s students, faculty, staff and alumni. The Program is funded by an endowment established by Abner Batalden, Class of 1936, and supported today by his family.

Congratulations to our three Auggie Pride Award winners for the month of October- Emily Long, Ashley Adegeye, and Elizabeth Charnell, three staff members in the residence life department. The opening of the residence halls this year was one of the smoothest in the past 15 years. The praise goes to the leadership of Emily Long, Director of Residence Life, a new staff member who had not seen the process ever before. The praise also goes to Ashley Adegeye, Residence Hall Director, and Elizabeth Charnell, Residence Business Manager. They have continued their work now throughout the semester. They prioritized the student staff experience, challenging them with great expectations and supporting them with great care. In addition, Emily, Ashley, and Elizabeth provided resident students with responsiveness and respect. Our staff senate is excited to recognize them for all of their efforts!! Faculty Invited – Provost Search Listening Sessions

AGB Search firm has been engaged to assist with the provost search. Representatives from AGB Search are inviting faculty to participate in listening sessions. Listening sessions will be offered, via Zoom, on Mon. Nov. 1, 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. and Thur. Nov. 4, 8:30 – 9:30 a.m.

Given the Zoom format, AGB Search has asked that each session be limited to 25 participants. If the response to the sessions warrants, a third session will be added. Please watch Amail for further updates.

Residential Student? Check your Campus Box

Are you a student living on campus? You have a campus box. Even if you are not expecting mail you still may be getting mail. Mailboxes are located on the main floor of the Christensen Center and can be checked any time you have access to the building. If you don’t know or forgot your campus box number you can check anytime by searching yourself with the Augsburg Directory. There are some boxes that are getting full, if this happens you mail will be bundled and labeled as a package in shipping/receiving.

Augsburg Is a 20-Year Top Producer of Gilman Scholars

Augsburg University was recognized yesterday by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs for having produced the most Gilman recipients over the past 20 years in the “small institutions” category.

60 Augsburg students have used Gilman awards toward a study abroad experience since 2001!

This amazing accomplishment would not have been possible without the dedication of MANY people on campus to Gilman’s mission to make study abroad more accessible and inclusive. Special thanks to Leah Spinosa de Vega for recognizing the potential for Gilman winners at Augsburg so many years ago, and putting the recruitment building blocks in place. Thanks also to all the staff in the TRIO office for collaborating on workshops each semester and tirelessly identifying and encouraging great applicants. Their work to promote student success stories has helped more Auggies SEE themselves as Gilman winners.

Especially during this pandemic time when many study abroad experiences have been interrupted and even Gilman awards were not available due to COVID, Augsburg staff and faculty can be proud that so many Auggies have had transformative experiences abroad thanks to Gilman scholarships over the last 20 years.

Established in 2001, the U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program has provided scholarships to outstanding U.S. undergraduate students who, due to financial constraints, might not otherwise participate. Since the program’s inception, more than 34,000 Gilman Scholars have studied or interned in more than 155 countries.

Do you know someone who has recently completed a significant project, implemented an innovative idea, or worked creatively across divisions or departments? If so, nominate them for an Auggie Pride Award today!

The Auggie Pride Awards are part of a peer recognition program that honors individual staff members who have made a significant contribution to department, division, or University-wide goals. All nominations are submitted through an online form and considered by Staff Senate. Nominations are kept on a rolling basis throughout the Academic Year, and awards are distributed to two staff every month.

Those honored will receive a letter from Staff Senate (including some text from the nomination letters) and a $25 Visa gift card as a token of our appreciation.

We welcome Auggie Pride nominations for staff whom you do not directly supervise. If you would like to nominate someone, please use the Auggie Pride submission form.

Staff Pay Increase Letters

Staff who were eligible for the pay increase, which was approved by the Board of Regents, and referenced at the Fall All-Hands Meeting, received SignNow invitations via email to acknowledge their updated pay.

Please note that these letters have been sent from the HR@augsburg.edu email by Human Resources staff, through our secure SignNow link, and are safe to open. There is a letter from President Pribbenow on the first page, followed by the wage notice document, with fields for you to add signature and date.
