Augsburg University Staff Senate has two important elections this spring. We are currently taking nominations for Staff Senate Representatives and University Council Staff Representatives.

Staff Senate Representatives: Augsburg University’s Staff Senate is composed of six members who are nominated and elected by their peers for a two-year term as well as two additional at-large members, appointed by Staff Senate. Students are able to use 3 hours a week; 3 one hour sessions or 6 thirty-minute sessions. You can access TutorMe through any of your Moodle classes. Deadline Extended: April 1st

A new program is being offered this summer by the Pan-Afrikan Center and the Center for Global Education and Experience (CGEE) called Anti-Apartheid and Black Lives Matter: Global Movements for Racial Justice.

The program will be offered May 17 – May 28. Students will be able to receive 2 credits and fulfill the Augsburg Experience requirement OR they can take it only to fulfill the Augsburg Experience. The cost of the program is being supported by scholarships from CGEE, the Pan-Afrikan Center, and Augsburg University; therefore, we are able to offer it at a reduced price.

Program participants will critically analyze the global racial unrest movements of the Southern Africa Anti-Apartheid system, and the racially motivated murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Albertina Shifotoka, Program Director of CGEE Namibia, and Azania Tripp, Director of the Pan-Afrikan Center, will facilitate a 2-week program experience that will introduce students to the understanding of how these movements became historical events and impacted policy and the visibilities on racial inequities that impact the Pan-Afrikan diaspora and all BIPOC communities. The program will be offered from May 17 – May 28, 2021 and the deadline for applying is Thurs, March 25.

We are hiring for Auggie Ambassadors and Tour Guides. Ambassadors have more office hours and help manage the front desk along with tours and events. Tour Guides focus on leading tours! Augsburg’s TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting students for Fall 2021 admission. Eligible applicants will be at Junior status by the end of Spring 2022 and available to conduct full-time research Summer 2022. We are particularly looking for students in STEM fields that are interested in pursuing doctoral degrees, but we will consider all majors EXCEPT most professional fields (including business, pre-law, pre-health).

The TRIO McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academics, involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. McNair provides coursework, workshops and advising in preparation for doctoral study. The program also assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4000+) with an Augsburg faculty member during the Summer of 2022.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, students must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income AND/OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents and maintain at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA (3.0+ preferred).

Friday March 26th – TOMORROW is the last day students can submit the 2021 College Student Health Survey. Augsburg University is partnering with the University of MN to administer the 2021 College Student Health Survey which has been sent via email to Augsburg student email addresses. The survey asks for information on a variety of college student health topics. Please take the time to complete the survey. Those participating in doing the survey will be entered into a drawing for Amazon gift cards – First place $1000, 2nd place $500, 3rd place $250 and 5 fourth place gift cards of $50 each. Thirteen universities are participating and one student from each school will win a $100 Amazon gift card. We want your input so please participate in the 2021 College Student Health Survey. Augsburg Asian Student Association (AASA), Hmong Women Together (HWT), and Pan Asian Student Services(PASS) recognizes that anti-AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islanders) prejudice is only one form of systematic racism that continues to spread in our nation. Together, we appreciate the outpour of outreach and attention from Administration, peers and allies in support of the recent events in Georgia last week and our daily lived experiences.

We hope that there will be work in solidarity from Augsburg to take a stand against the structures that perpetuate and fuel discrimination for all BIPOC and specifically recently more heightened assaults on Pan-Asians in our communities, and to identify actionable ways to address this and all forms of prejudice, stigmatization, and racism.

A new program is being offered this summer by the Pan-Afrikan Center and the Center for Global Education and Experience (CGEE) called Anti-Apartheid and Black Lives Matter: Global Movements for Racial Justice.

The program will be offered May 17 – May 28. Students will be able to receive 2 credits and fulfill the Augsburg Experience requirement OR they can take it only to fulfill the Augsburg Experience. The cost of the program is being supported by scholarships from CGEE, the Pan-Afrikan Center, and Augsburg University; therefore, we are able to offer it at a reduced price.

Program participants will critically analyze the global racial unrest movements of the Southern Africa Anti-Apartheid system, and the racially motivated murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Albertina Shifotoka, Program Director of CGEE Namibia, and Azania Tripp, Director of the Pan-Afrikan Center, will facilitate a 2-week program experience that will introduce students to the understanding of how these movements became historical events and impacted policy and the visibilities on racial inequities that impact the Pan-Afrikan diaspora and all BIPOC communities. The program will be offered from May 17 – May 28, 2021 and the deadline for applying is Thurs, March 25.

Augsburg’s TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting students for Fall 2021 admission. Eligible applicants will be at Junior status by the end of Spring 2022 and available to conduct full-time research Summer 2022. We are particularly looking for students in STEM fields that are interested in pursuing doctoral degrees, but we will consider all majors EXCEPT most professional fields (including business, pre-law, pre-health).

The TRIO McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academics, involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. McNair provides coursework, workshops and advising in preparation for doctoral study. The program also assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4000+) with an Augsburg faculty member during the Summer of 2022.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, students must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income AND/OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents and maintain at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA (3.0+ preferred).

Barbara West, Director of Student Teacher Placement/Licensing, shared with the Education Department and the university her decision to retire, at the end of this academic year. We are grateful for Barbara’s service, as she has contributed much to Augsburg over the past 24 years. Barbara has played, with others over the years, a significant role in the Augsburg journey! For her long years of service, the Education Department has nominated Barbara for emeritus status, as one way and possibility of recognizing the contributions of non-tenure-track faculty with 15+ years of service to the institution. The recommendation will be brought to the Board for approval at the end of the current academic year.

Please pause, with us, for a moment to reflect on how the institution is strengthened by the many contributions of individual faculty and staff, and how each brings a unique gift as a “thread” to a broader story and narrative that is made stronger over time. As Augsburg’s CGEE-Mexico Site Director, I want to thank the entire Augsburg community for sharing your condolences with the family of Augsburg-Mexico employees Moises Rios (50) & Isabel Sánchez (48), a married couple who died of COVID-19 last month. Augsburg Asian Student Association (AASA), Hmong Women Together (HWT), and Pan Asian Student Services(PASS) recognizes that anti-AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islanders) prejudice is only one form of systematic racism that continues to spread in our nation. Together, we appreciate the outpour of outreach and attention from Administration, peers and allies in support of the recent events in Georgia last week and our daily lived experiences.

We hope that there will be work in solidarity from Augsburg to take a stand against the structures that perpetuate and fuel discrimination for all BIPOC and specifically recently more heightened assaults on Pan-Asians in our communities, and to identify actionable ways to address this and all forms of prejudice, stigmatization, and racism.

We hereby recommend for you to join us in the following spaces at Augsburg to continue these conversations and to help us come together in community:

In early March, Aisha Mohamed ’16 explored the intersection of of religion and science as she shares her own experience of being a Muslim and a biology major at Augsburg. While at Augsburg she was active in MSA and was an Interfaith Scholar and now is a second year student at University of Minnesota Medical School. Kathryn Swanson, Professor Emerita – English, has been nominated and reappointed to a second 4-year term on the Higher Learning Commission (HLC)’s Institutional Actions Council (IAC). This is the body responsible for reviewing team visits’ decisions, institutions’ responses to reviews, and institutions’ requests for any changes. This work is in addition to Swanson’s work over the past 25 years as a HLC consultant/evaluator and team chair for site visits.
She has also recently had a chapter (“Extending Cozy Boundaries”) included in the anthology _Reading the Cozy Mystery : Critical Essays on an Underappreciated Subgenre_ (McFarland Press, 2021).

For the Fall 2021 undergraduate registration period we are eliminating the crossover registration waiting period on a trial basis. Registration for AU students into Day classes and Day students into AU classes will be available as soon as a student is eligible to register. A decision about crossover registration in future semesters will be made after we see how this trial impacts Day and AU student access to courses in their home programs.

Augsburg University is partnering with the University of MN to administer the 2021 College Student Health Survey which has been sent via email to Augsburg student email addresses. The survey asks for information on a variety of college student health topics. Please take the time to complete the survey by March 26th. Those participating in doing the survey will be entered into a drawing for Amazon gift cards – First place $1000, 2nd place $500, 3rd place $250 and 5 fourth place gift cards of $50 each. MDAW is a collaborative effort between The Minnesota Urban Debate League (a program of Augsburg University) and The University of Minnesota Debate Team. The program will be offered May 17 – May 28. Students will be able to receive 2 credits and fulfill the Augsburg Experience requirement OR they can take it only to fulfill the Augsburg Experience. The cost of the program is being supported by scholarships from CGEE, the Pan-Afrikan Center, and Augsburg University; therefore, we are able to offer it at a reduced price.

Program participants will critically analyze the global racial unrest movements of the Southern Africa Anti-Apartheid system, and the racially motivated murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis. MDAW is a collaborative effort between The Minnesota Urban Debate League (a program of Augsburg University) and The University of Minnesota Debate Team. Our goal is to increase access to speech & debate for schools, coaches, and students entering 5th – 12th grade providing a high quality, virtual summer camp experience to students in the Twin Cities Metro, the Upper Midwest region, and across the US!

This fundraising campaign was organized by Mary Laurel True, who participated in Augsburg’s first semester program in Mexico in 1979, and four other former CGEE-Mexico students who studied here, as well as myself. Augsburg University is partnering with the University of MN to administer the 2021 College Student Health Survey which has been sent via email to Augsburg student email addresses. As part of the Augsburg University Equity Proposal, the Auggie Basics – Housing initiative is designed to address the needs of students who experience housing instability. The purpose of the program is to provide a bridge for students whose housing is not stable as they seek to identify a permanent solution.

Students accepted into the Auggie Basics Program will live on campus without cost to the student. Regardless of when students enter the program, the housing commitment will cover the full academic year if needed. If the student secures permanent housing elsewhere, they will be released from the program and the spot will be offered to another student. Summer housing may be an option. Students must reapply each academic year. Being chosen for the Auggie Basics program one year does not guarantee participation in future years.

It is the acknowledgement of our limitation, our need to rest, our reliance on a God who does not slumber nor sleep. We rest so that we may awake to serve God in the care of our neighbors.

Gov. Tim Walz will hold a press conference Tuesday morning, March 9, to discuss the next steps in Minnesoa’s COVID-19 vaccination rollout.

Walz has previously said that Minnesota would move to the next phase of vaccinations once 70% of people 65 years and older had received the vaccine. More than 66% of that population had received at least one dose by this past weekend.

The Augsburg University Bookstore will be adjusting the hours of operations starting 3/15-3/19 for mid-term break. 3/15-3/19 the bookstore hours will be 10:00am-2:00pm. Starting 3/22 the bookstore hours will be 10:00am-3:00pm Monday-Friday. If you need assistance outside of those hours you can call the bookstore (612-359-6491) and we will assist you. A new program is being offered this summer by the Pan-Afrikan Center and the Center for Global Education and Experience (CGEE) called Anti-Apartheid and Black Lives Matter: Global Movements for Racial Justice.

The program will be offered May 17 – May 28. Students will be able to receive 2 credits and fulfill the Augsburg Experience requirement OR they can take it only to fulfill the Augsburg Experience. The cost of the program is being supported by scholarships from CGEE, the Pan-Afrikan Center, and Augsburg University; therefore, we are able to offer it at a reduced price.

Program participants will critically analyze the global racial unrest movements of the Southern Africa Anti-Apartheid system, and the racially motivated murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Albertina Shifotoka, Program Director of CGEE Namibia, and Azania Tripp, Director of the Pan-Afrikan Center, will facilitate a 2-week program experience that will introduce students to the understanding of how these movements became historical events and impacted policy and the visibilities on racial inequities that impact the Pan-Afrikan diaspora and all BIPOC communities. The program will be offered from May 17 – May 28, 2021 and the deadline for applying is Thurs, March 25.

As part of the Augsburg University Equity Proposal, the Auggie Basics – Housing initiative is designed to address the needs of students who experience housing instability. The purpose of the program is to provide a bridge for students whose housing is not stable as they seek to identify a permanent solution.

Students accepted into the Auggie Basics Program will live on campus without cost to the student. Regardless of when students enter the program, the housing commitment will cover the full academic year if needed. If the student secures permanent housing elsewhere, they will be released from the program and the spot will be offered to another student. Summer housing may be an option. Students must reapply each academic year. Being chosen for the Auggie Basics program one year does not guarantee participation in future years.

You can still register for the Alternative Spring Break experience with Campus Ministry, approved to count as an Augsburg Experience, and offering students an opportunity to look deeper at justice issues in the Twin Cities and surrounding area and engage in meaningful, relationship-centered volunteer work.
The justice issues will be examined through several experiences in the Twin Cities and reflection and sharing in order for participants to process their experience communally and individually. These experiences include:
Onsite work with Health Commons at Central Lutheran Church and in the Cedar Riverside clinic.
A presentation and activities by the University of MN Mapping Prejudice project, exploring housing inequity due to racial disparities.
A presentation and activities by the Lutheran Social Service of MN (LSS-MN) Advocacy team, providing practical and current information on ways to be advocates.
Activities are subject to change due to COVID-19 protocols.
For volunteer opportunities, students will partner with LSS-MN at Supported Living Homes (SLH), known as ‘group homes.’ SLH provides a family home setting to no more than 4 community members living with differing abilities.
Students will serve in small groups at several homes. Activities may include yard work, building maintenance, meal prep, and social activities alongside those who live in the home. Volunteer work will focus on the relational aspect of volunteering, rather than the actual jobs accomplished. Volunteer activities are designed to help volunteers and residents see one another as individuals rather than ‘other.’
This ASB has been approved to count as an Augsburg Experience. Please indicate on the registration form if you would like that option.
Cost: $25, including the required book & lunch each of the 5 days. Please fill out the registration form.
