New for 2020, we have an IT Status service we’ve been testing internally and we’re ready to release to you.
https://au-ls-it-status.statushub.io/
On this page you can subscribe to receive email or text alerts about major service issues (you can even select which services you care about – moodle, telecom, internet, etc). Please keep in mind a human still has to create the alerts and in some cases solving the problem will take priority over updating the status page. Some updates may come after the fact.
Our hope is that this empowers you, if you’re interested, to receive updates about major service issues that you care about.

Dear Faculty and Staff,
I am writing to share the sad news that Dr. Richard C. Nelson, former professor and chair of Augsburg’s department of history, passed away on Sunday, December 22nd.
Rick received the BA from the University of Nebraska, and the MA and PhD from the University of Minnesota. He began teaching at Augsburg in 1967, earned tenure and promotion to associate professor in 1977, and was promoted to professor in 1986. Rick retired from Augsburg in 2000 and was awarded faculty emeritus status.
Rick was a prominent faculty leader who – in addition to other significant contributions – served as president of the Faculty Senate. He was a classical scholar, with research interests focused on ancient Assyria and Sumeria. His expertise in ancient history shaped the experience of successive generations of students.
Together with English professor Dave Wood, Rick co-authored The Anderson Chronicles: An Intimate Portrait of Augsburg College, 1963-1997, which continued the work of Carl Chrislock’s From Fjord to Freeway: 100 years, Augsburg College.
Rick was a long-time member of what became known as The Seminar — a group of colleagues, across many disciplines (Biology, Physics, English, History, Art, Sociology, Music, and more) who met locally every Friday for over fifty years, where close bonds were developed and families became tied closely together.
A memorial service will be held in Rick’s home town of Beatrice, Nebraska on January 4, 2020. A full obituary with additional details is posted online.

Dr. Lauren Causey, Manager of Sponsored Research, is now a Certified Research Administrator (CRA).
The CRA exam is administered by the Research Administrators Certification Council. Earning this credential is an important indicator that Lauren possesses the range of knowledge needed to oversee the entire life cycle of a federal sponsored program, from pre-award research and proposal development to award negotiation and budget management.
Lauren joined the Office of Grants and Sponsored Programs in November of 2018 where she oversees faculty research and federal grant submissions (e.g. National Science Foundation & National Institutes of Health). Prior to joining Augsburg, she was Senior Evaluation and Research Associate at the Science Museum of Minnesota. Lauren holds a Master’s Degree in Education from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in Education, Curriculum, and Instruction from the University of Minnesota—Twin Cities.
Please join me in congratulating Lauren for this remarkable achievement!

I really enjoy mentoring new advising professional advisors here at Augsburg as they help students navigate the university experience all the way from matriculation to graduation. I find working with faculty and academic affairs administration to review curriculum, course offerings, and policies extremely rewarding as I am able to provide the student perspective from years of sitting down with students to navigate all of these items. Everyone has a role here at Augsburg, and I am happy to fill mine as the Director of Academic Advising.

I really enjoy walking either across or down to the river when it is nice out.

It is with mixed emotions that I let you know that Anne Lynch will be retiring at the end of this fall semester. While I’m excited for Anne to have time to pursue new adventures, we at Augsburg will deeply miss her. Anne has served as a disability specialist in the CLASS office for over twenty years. Throughout her career here, she has provided access and support for countless students. Additionally, Anne has trained and mentored numbers of disability specialists who now work in disability resource offices across the country. Over the years, faculty and administrators have counted on Anne to provide effective consultation on how to best address concerns regarding their students with disabilities. Anne has tirelessly offered her expertise, her patience, and her empathic listening ear. She has loved our students and our institution well. Anne prefers not to have a formal send-off, but please join me in wishing her all the besting this next leg of her journey.

The Phillips Scholars Program recognizes and rewards private college students who strive to make life better for those with unmet needs. Applicants are challenged to think creatively and become community-service leaders, and receive a total of $16,000 in scholarship.
A preliminary mini-application (linked below) is used to select two finalists from Augsburg University who will then develop a full proposal to be submitted to the Minnesota Private College Council for the scholarship. This will include a 5-7 page project proposal, official transcript, and 3 letters of recommendation. Staff members of the Sabo Center will help finalists complete their applications.
Applicants must be a sophomore during the 2019-2020 school year.
Each year, projects must fit within a theme. This year’s application theme is “Addressing the Achievement/Opportunity Gap in Minnesota.”
Scholarship recipients receive $6,000 during their junior year, a $4,000 stipend while completing a summer project, and $6,000 their senior year upon successful completion of their summer project.
Last year, 3 of the 5 Phillips Scholar recipients were Augsburg students, and many Augsburg students have received the scholarship in the past.
