Critical Language Scholarship

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is
– A fully-funded eight to ten week language and cultural immersion program
– Students receive eight credits of intensive language instruction
– Part of a US State Department initiative to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering foreign languages critical to national security and economic prosperity
– There are 14 languages that applicants can select from. Alumni of the program also receive one year of non-competitive eligibility (NCE) status when applying for federal government jobs

Competitive applicants will need
– To illustrate a commitment to language learning,
– A strong academic record and potential to succeed in a rigorous academic setting
– Ability to adapt to an intensive program and challenging cultural environment.
– Most programs do not require experience studying the selected language. Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

Applications are due Tuesday, November 15, 2022 by 8:00 PM EST / 5 PM PST.

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) program now offers CLS Spark. This is a virtual initiative for undergraduate students to lean essential languages for America’s engagement with the world.

As a virtual program, CLS Spark allows students to have an immersive language and cultural experience with international communities. Spark participants will spend approximately 8 weeks during the summer learning either Arabic, Russian, or Chinese through online classes and activities facilitated by native speakers. You do not need to have any prior knowledge of these languages.

– 10 hours of intense live group instruction a week
– Cultural activities and individual consultations
– Monthly professional development workshops and inclusive support

Participants of CLS Spark will receive:
– Language instruction and cultural programming;
– Textbooks and language learning materials
– Language gains certified using the widely-recognized ACTFL OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview) assessment
– Non-competitive eligibility for U.S. government employment for up to three -years after the program completion;
– Academic credit issued through Bryn Mawr College; and
– A stipend towards equipment and connectivity costs (for example, a web camera or microphone).

IMMIGRATION STORIES & COMMUNITY BUILDING IN RURAL MINNESOTA

Evening Course Meetings: Tuesdays & Thursdays 6:00-9:00pm, for 4 weeks beginning May 9 and ending June 3.
Travel: This course will travel to Walnut Grove, Minnesota for 2 short residencies:
Tuesday, May 23 – Friday, May 26
Thursday, June 1- Saturday, June 3, including a public showing in Walnut Grove on June 2
Course choices:
THR 295 – Topics in Theater, fulfills Fine Arts requirement
SOC 495 – elective for sociology majors or minors
INS 292 — 2 credit optional add-n for students wishing to take additional credits in summer

Changing demographics, especially in rural communities, provide both challenges and opportunities for building strong and equity-minded communities. This course explores these challenges and opportunities with the goal of building community ties as well as connections between Augsburg University students and the residents of Walnut Grove, Minnesota.

While in Walnut Grove, you will meet with community members and conduct interviews to learn more about the residents of the community and their history. Research, stories, and data will be collected and used as material to create a public presentation at the end of the class.
This is a great opportunity to earn credits in a new, dynamic way during summer, without interfering with work schedules, and other summer commitments!

Cool Opportunity for BIPOC and/or LGBTQIA+ Interested in Technology

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) has received funding from Amateur Radio Digital Communications to develop and offer a set of entirely virtual courses designed to teach early career learners about the electromagnetic spectrum and amateur (ham) radio. The program aims to reach learners who bring diverse experiences and perspectives to STEM – and to the amateur radio community especially.

The 20-week inaugural course will take place from Jan 9-May 26, 2023, with ~10 BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ (18-20 year old) students from across the country.

Participants will receive a $2,000 stipend over the project period. Expected engagement is about 3-6 hours/week.

Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Junior Summer Institute is an intensive seven-week summer program that focuses on preparing students for careers as policy professionals, public administrators and other leadership roles in public service. The program was started to address the lack of diversity across the spectrum of professional public service, including government, nonprofits, public policy institutions, and international organizations. The purpose of the JSI Fellowship is to prepare students to obtain a Master’s or joint degree, in public policy, public administration, international affairs, or a related field.

Selected participants spend the summer at one of six participating universities (University of Minnesota, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, Princeton, University of Washington or University of Michigan) where they take courses, learn from top leaders in the field and build their professional skills. Students must have junior or senior status and be planning to graduate between December 2023 and August 2024. To be competitive for this opportunity, students should have a 3.5 GPA or above. There is no cost to attend and participants receive a stipend.

Two Workshops for Faculty Mentors (Advisors) on October 5

Informed mentoring/advising of our students can be critical to their success, on-time graduation, and achieving their academic goals. The Degree Audit we’ve been using since 2021 is designed to help students and their faculty mentors better and more effectively communicate with each other about university and discipline-based requirements specific to each student as well as documentation of the student’s progression toward graduation.

In response to faculty requests, the Registrar’s Office Graduation Team is pleased to offer two sessions to help faculty learn more about the Degree Audit and how to use it as a tool for mentoring/advising students. Faculty may attend one or both workshops, and should RSVP planned attendance to one or both by sending an email to graduation@augsburg.edu no later than 11am the day of the session.

Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Junior Summer Institute is an intensive seven-week summer program that focuses on preparing students for careers as policy professionals, public administrators and other leadership roles in public service. The program was started to address the lack of diversity across the spectrum of professional public service, including government, nonprofits, public policy institutions, and international organizations. The purpose of the JSI Fellowship is to prepare students to obtain a Master’s or joint degree, in public policy, public administration, international affairs, or a related field.

Selected participants spend the summer at one of six participating universities (University of Minnesota, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, Princeton, University of Washington or University of Michigan) where they take courses, learn from top leaders in the field and build their professional skills. Students must have junior or senior status and be planning to graduate between December 2023 and August 2024. To be competitive for this opportunity, students should have a 3.5 GPA or above. There is no cost to attend and participants receive a stipend.

IMMIGRATION STORIES & COMMUNITY BUILDING IN RURAL MINNESOTA

• Evening Course Meetings: Tuesdays & Thursdays 6:00-9:00pm, for 4 weeks beginning May 9 and ending June 3.

• Travel: This course will travel to Walnut Grove, Minnesota for 2 short residencies:
• Tuesday, May 23 – Friday, May 26
• Thursday, June 1- Saturday, June 3, including a public showing in Walnut Grove on June 2

Changing demographics, especially in rural communities, provide both challenges and opportunities for building strong and equity-minded communities. This course explores these challenges and opportunities with the goal of building community ties as well as connections between Augsburg University students and the residents of Walnut Grove, Minnesota.

While in Walnut Grove, you will meet with community members and conduct interviews to learn more about the residents of the community and their history. Research, stories, and data will be collected and used as material to create a public presentation at the end of the class.
This is a great opportunity to earn credits in a new, dynamic way during summer, without interfering with work schedules, and other summer commitments!

The Degree Audit we’ve been using since 2021 is designed to help students and their faculty mentors better and more effectively communicate with each other about university and discipline-based requirements specific to each student as well as documentation of the student’s progression toward graduation.

In response to faculty requests, the Registrar’s Office Graduation Team is pleased to offer two sessions to help faculty learn more about the Degree Audit and how to use it as a tool for mentoring/advising students. Faculty may attend one or both workshops, and should RSVP planned attendance to one or both by sending an email to graduation@augsburg.edu no later than 2pm the day of the session.

The Degree Audit we’ve been using since 2021 is designed to help students and their faculty mentors better and more effectively communicate with each other about university and discipline-based requirements specific to each student as well as documentation of the student’s progression toward graduation.

Applications for Augsburg’s Mayo Innovations Scholar Program are now available on the URGO website! This program is highly competitive and is primarily designed for juniors and seniors.

What is MISP?
In the process of conducting research, Mayo Clinic scientists have developed new products that may be marketable. These products are submitted to the Mayo Clinic Office of Intellectual Property (OIP) for a thorough investigation of marketability. The OIP has a significant backlog of products to be investigated. One of the backlogged products or inventions is assigned to each MISP team for investigative research and formal presentation at Mayo Clinic.

Augsburg’s team will consist of an MBA student, 3 undergraduate science students, 1 undergraduate business/economics student, 2 Augsburg faculty, and a Licensing Manager from the Mayo Clinic OIP. The team will work together to understand the science and applications of the project or innovation and analyze the market potential. Each undergraduate student on the team will receive $1,500. Teams will begin work during October and the final presentations will be in March.

Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Junior Summer Institute is an intensive seven-week summer program that focuses on preparing students for careers as policy professionals, public administrators and other leadership roles in public service. The program was started to address the lack of diversity across the spectrum of professional public service, including government, nonprofits, public policy institutions, and international organizations. The purpose of the JSI Fellowship is to prepare students to obtain a Master’s or joint degree, in public policy, public administration, international affairs, or a related field.

Selected participants spend the summer at one of six participating universities (University of Minnesota, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, Princeton, University of Washington or University of Michigan) where they take courses, learn from top leaders in the field and build their professional skills. Students must have junior or senior status and be planning to graduate between December 2023 and August 2024. To be competitive for this opportunity, students should have a 3.5 GPA or above. There is no cost to attend and participants receive a stipend.

In the process of conducting research, Mayo Clinic scientists have developed new products that may be marketable. These products are submitted to the Mayo Clinic Office of Intellectual Property (OIP) for a thorough investigation of marketability. The OIP has a significant backlog of products to be investigated. One of the backlogged products or inventions is assigned to each MISP team for investigative research and formal presentation at Mayo Clinic.

Augsburg’s team will consist of an MBA student, 3 undergraduate science students, 1 undergraduate business/economics student, 2 Augsburg faculty, and a Licensing Manager from the Mayo Clinic OIP. The team will work together to understand the science and applications of the project or innovation and analyze the market potential. Each undergraduate student on the team will receive $1,500. Teams will begin work during October and the final presentations will be in March.

Paid Summer Program to Study Public Policy

Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Junior Summer Institute is an intensive seven-week summer program that focuses on preparing students for careers as policy professionals, public administrators and other leadership roles in public service. The program was started to address the lack of diversity across the spectrum of professional public service, including government, nonprofits, public policy institutions, and international organizations. The purpose of the JSI Fellowship is to prepare students to obtain a Master’s or joint degree, in public policy, public administration, international affairs, or a related field.

Selected participants spend the summer at one of six participating universities (University of Minnesota, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, Princeton, University of Washington or University of Michigan) where they take courses, learn from top leaders in the field and build their professional skills. Students must have junior or senior status and be planning to graduate between December 2023 and August 2024. To be competitive for this opportunity, students should have a 3.5 GPA or above. There is no cost to attend and participants receive a stipend.
