Augsburg GRE Prep Course Online

Augsburg University offers a five-week GRE prep course each summer for Augsburg students and alumni at a cost well below those found at private test centers. This course is taught by experienced GRE test-prep educators. Throughout the course students will have a chance to complete practice problems for each area of the test and receive in-depth feedback and instruction. The registration fee also includes a six-month subscription to the online GRE study tool, Magoosh.

Due to COVID-19, this year’s course will be offered via Zoom.

May 13th – June 15th

Mondays and Wednesdays, 5:30 – 8:00pm (Excluding Memorial Day)

Cost: $100

AAC Statement/Recommendation to Faculty

At its last meeting, AAC met via Zoom with student representative Miracle Adebanjo, who communicated that the transition to online teaching has prompted a deep and widespread sense of anxiety among the student body. In most cases students did not sign up for online classes, and most faculty have little experience teaching them. Many students are attempting to finish their semesters in challenging home environments, and some will unfortunately have to cope with dire financial or health crises. Given these unprecedented circumstances, the Academic Affairs Committee strongly urges all faculty to consider student work for the remainder of this semester with the maximum amount of flexibility, generosity, and–most of all–compassion. Some examples might include:
-accepting late work with little or no penalty
-relaxing attendance and participation policies
-grading on a curve

AAC/GAAC Announcment

Given the circumstances, AAC and GAAC will be meeting in a limited fashion over the course of the rest of the semester, primarily focusing on procedural proposals having to do with the educational changes wrought by the epidemic.  This is likely to be mostly big-picture level proposals (such as changes to P/NP policy) but we may have time for easy-to-deal-with tweaks to courses or majors.  Given the uncertainty facing us, we will not be able to look at proposals for new courses or programs for the rest of the year.

Finals Week

Final exam week is April 27 – May 1. If your course is synchronous (all students in the class meet with the instructor at the same time online), your final meeting time will take place during your scheduled final exam time. The final exam schedule is posted on the Registrar’s website: https://www.augsburg.edu/registrar/calendars/finals/

The last day of the term is May 1.

Graduate courses do not follow the final exam schedule. Graduate courses will meet at their regularly scheduled time during the last week of the term (April 27 – May 1).

Pass/No Pass (P/N) Grading for Spring 2020

The grading option change deadline has been extended to the final day of the term, May 1, so students have the rest of the semester to decide whether to opt for a letter grade or P/N grading.

Additionally, Augsburg will make a notation on students’ transcripts for spring semester to provide context for P/N grades or lower letter grades, explaining that “Spring 2020 was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.”

As campuses adapt to the many changes that COVID-19 has affected on daily life, the Jed Foundation recognizes that, perhaps more than ever, faculty serve an essential role in protecting students’ mental health.

As we respond together to this situation, we would like to invite you and your school’s faculty to join us on Wednesday, April 1 from 2:00PM to 3:30PM EDT for a webinar on how they can support students in managing the stress and anxiety that has resulted in shifting instruction from the classroom to the online space.

JED’s Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer Sofia B. Pertuz, Ph.D. will moderate a panel of experts sharing tips on how college and university faculty can provide support for their students during distance learning, while keeping in mind the needs of particularly vulnerable student populations.

Faculty, do you wish you had uninterrupted time to write/work on scholarship? If so, you will want to take advantage of the annual Jessica Nathanson Scholarly Writing Retreat. Jess established a tradition of allowing faculty and academic staff time away from campus to focus entirely on scholarship. There is no schedule for this retreat – it is simply time and space to work on scholarship. The Provost and the Center for Teaching and Learning will cover the cost of the retreat. We ask that you commit to being present on all three days of the event. Our time begins at 1 p.m. on Sunday and ends at 1 p.m. on Tuesday. Space is limited to full-time faculty members.

There is no schedule for this retreat – it is simply time and space to work on scholarship. The Provost and the Center for Teaching and Learning will cover the cost of the retreat. We ask that you commit to being present on all three days of the event. Our time begins at 1 p.m. on Sunday and ends at 1 p.m. on Tuesday. Space is limited to full-time faculty members.

Why consider a career in podiatric medicine?
• A Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) is a specialist in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of lower extremity disorders, diseases and injuries.
• DPMs can specialize in a variety of areas such as surgery, orthopedics, or public health. Besides these certified specialties, podiatrists may practice a subspecialty such as sports medicine, pediatrics, dermatology, radiology, geriatrics, or diabetic foot care.
• The DPM is a vital member of the health-care team. He or she is often the first to detect symptoms of diabetes or peripheral vascular disease because of the human foot’s interrelation with the rest of the body.

Tomorrow: Troubling Times, River Trips, and Ideas on How to Move Forward

The 2019 River Journey took over 50 people on the Mississippi last fall, and connected to a large group of scholars, artists, and local practitioners involved with the elaborate Mississippi. An Anthropocene River Project, orchestrated by the Haus der Kulturen der Welt and Max Planck Institute for the History of Science. It was a rich, multifaceted experience, with multiple field-based research and arts projects, and provided us with some interesting stories (e.g. getting sprayed by a crop duster, witnessing a slave rebellion re-enactment, and spending a little time in the back of a police car). It also provided insights into new possibilities for higher education in the 21st century and suggested ways to develop curriculum that provides alternative to the multiple dysfunctions of our times. Feel free to bring your lunch and stop by OGC 100 at noon on Wed., Mar. 4th to hear more about the Anthropocene River Journey and join in discussion of way to provide similarly engaging, healing, and high-impact learning opportunities for our students.
