Important Information Regarding CTL Travel Grants

Because of a budget shortfall, CTL is not accepting/approving any new applications for travel within the current fiscal year.

-If your travel is near the end of this fiscal year, and you are willing to use personal funds and wait until after June 1 for reimbursement to be processed, you can submit an application. However, this will be coming from your 2020-2021 funds.

-This does not affect travel applications already submitted and approved. If you already received an approval for travel this fiscal year (travel taking place before the end of May), then follow instructions as outlined in your travel grant approval.

-This does not affect any adjunct travel grants/professional development funding.

-We are accepting applications for travel between June and December starting March 1.

“Wellness in Color” is a podcast series of the National Alliance of Mental Illness that explores perspectives on mental health to reshape the cultural language of mental illness. In the podcast young adults of color share their challenges and successes in mental health recovery and wellness. NAMI’s goal is “to reach collective cultural communities through positive reflections on wellness through discussions on why community members do not seek help for themselves or their loved one living with a mental illness.”

There will be a two part discussion. You can attend either of the two sessions for each part, but should attend both parts.

In the first part we will discuss three podcast episodes:
-Blurring Tradition by Houa Moua (45min)
-Never Stop Watering your Roots by Lauryn David (34min)
-The Pressures of Perfection by Aneela Kumar (44min)

Faculty, do you wish you had uninterrupted time to write/work on scholarship? If so, you will want to take advantage of the annual Jessica Nathanson Scholarly Writing Retreat. Jess established a tradition of allowing faculty and academic staff time away from campus to focus entirely on scholarship. There is no schedule for this retreat – it is simply time and space to work on scholarship. The Provost and the Center for Teaching and Learning will cover the cost of the retreat. We ask that you commit to being present on all three days of the event. Our time begins at 1 p.m. on Sunday and ends at 1 p.m. on Tuesday. Space is limited to full-time faculty members.

Free Trip to Holocaust Museum Through the MINNE Fellowship

The MINNE Holocaust Fellows program selects college students to participate in a fully-paid, one-day trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. to acquire a more in-depth knowledge of the Holocaust. Fellows tour the permanent exhibits and featured exhibits, as well as meet with a museum representative. Awards come through the MINNE Fund of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, who has chosen Augsburg to be one of the select universities to participate in the program. Five Augsburg students were selected last year for the trip.
The 2020 trip will take place on April 23rd. Applications are due on February 28th and can be found at http://jewishminneapolis.org/minne/. Brownbag discussion of The Anthropocene River Journey

The 2019 River Journey took over 50 people on the Mississippi last fall, and connected to around 500 scholars, artists, and local practitioners involved with the elaborate Mississippi. An Anthropocene River Project orchestrated by the Haus der Kulturen der Welt and Max Planck Institute for the History of Science.  It was a rich, multifaceted experience, with multiple field-based research and arts projects, and provided us with some interesting stories (e.g. getting sprayed by a crop duster, witnessing a slave rebellion re-enactment, and spending a little time in the back of a police car).  It also provided insights into new possibilities for higher education in the 21st century and suggested ways to develop what might be called an “Anthropocene Curriculum.”  Feel free to bring your lunch and stop by OGC 100 at noon on Wed., Mar. 4th to hear more about the Anthropocene River Journey and join in discussion of new curricular possibilities for the times we’re living through and what kinds of local and on-campus programs can provide similarly engaging, healing, and high-impact learning opportunities for our students.

Sustainability-related grant available – Deadline TOMORROW

Looking for funding for sustainability-related course development, conference travel, research, internships, or other ideas? The College Sustainability grant we received is in its last year of funding, and the grant team is requesting all proposals for funding be made by February 26 in order to prioritize spending for the spring and summer. Remember that we think about sustainability broadly – environmental, economic, social, and personal wellness – on our campus, in our neighboring community, and among our institutional partners. It includes stewarding a culture of sustainability alongside of our most precious resources – Air, Land, Water, Built Environment, People, Food, and Energy.

Funding is available for:
Conference Travel: up to $750 faculty/$600 students
Course Development: $1,500
Faculty Research: $4,000
Student Research with Faculty Mentor: student stipend – $4,000; faculty stipend – $1,000
Off-Campus Internship with Community Partner – up to $4,200
Other: Flexible – depends on project needs and available funding

The proposals are selected for funding based on the following criteria:
-Relevance to the grant objectives
-Significance and potential for long-term impact on campus sustainability culture
-Interdisciplinarity, multifunctionality

a. the ways in which graduate level learning outcomes map to the mission
b. the ways in which they are scaffolded at a higher level than our undergraduate learning outcomes.
2. We will identify if there are graduate level learning outcomes that are ‘shared’ by all graduate programs. Can we call them out explicitly as part of our commitment to graduate students at Augsburg?

The deadline for submissions for the Instructional Course Design Grant has been extended to this coming Monday, 2/24, at noon.

About the ICD Grants:
-Designed to provide an opportunity for faculty to spend a significant amount of time on course design.
-The stipend amount is $2,000.

The 2020 ICD grants will prioritize course development which advances:
-The University mission of intentional commitment to diversity and creating more inclusive classroom experiences for students.
-Active and experiential learning opportunities.
-Interdisciplinary and problem-based modes of inquiry.

Proposals that clearly demonstrate the University’s mission of intentional commitment to diversity and creating inclusive classroom experiences for students may be eligible for an additional $500 ($2,500 total).

You will contribute to public leadership on campus and in the wider community in the Christian tradition, through interfaith engagement, or civic life. You will also be able to earn 4 upper division semester credits in the Religion or Political Science and receive a $2,000 scholarship.

Faculty, do you wish you had uninterrupted time to write/work on scholarship? If so, you will want to take advantage of the annual Jessica Nathanson Scholarly Writing Retreat. Jess established a tradition of allowing faculty and academic staff time away from campus to focus entirely on scholarship. There is no schedule for this retreat – it is simply time and space to work on scholarship. The Provost and the Center for Teaching and Learning will cover the cost of the retreat. We ask that you commit to being present on all three days of the event. Our time begins at 1 p.m. on Sunday and ends at 1 p.m. on Tuesday. Space is limited to full-time faculty members.

The MINNE Holocaust Fellows program selects college students to participate in a fully-paid, one-day trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. to acquire a more in-depth knowledge of the Holocaust. Fellows tour the permanent exhibits and featured exhibits, as well as meet with a museum representative. Awards come through the MINNE Fund of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, who has chosen Augsburg to be one of the select universities to participate in the program. Five Augsburg students were selected last year for the trip.
The 2020 trip will take place on April 23rd. Applications are due on February 28th and can be found at http://jewishminneapolis.org/minne/. 1. We will review the current set of graduate program learning outcomes for each program and discuss:
a. the ways in which graduate level learning outcomes map to the mission
b. the ways in which they are scaffolded at a higher level than our undergraduate learning outcomes.
2. We will identify if there are graduate level learning outcomes that are ‘shared’ by all graduate programs. Can we call them out explicitly as part of our commitment to graduate students at Augsburg?

A new, streamlined set of General Education Learning Outcomes (GELOs) is needed to better understand students’ learning experience in courses in the General Education curriculum. During this session we will review the proposed learning outcomes and examine how they relate to institutional outcomes. We will discuss how the proposed GELOs can accommodate the current curriculum, and yet be flexible to proposed curricular changes. This workshop will offer faculty and staff an opportunity to comment on the proposed outcomes, and help develop preliminary plans for how and where these outcomes can be assessed.

Looking for funding for sustainability-related course development, conference travel, research, internships, or other ideas? The College Sustainability grant we received is in its last year of funding, and the grant team is requesting all proposals for funding be made by February 26 in order to prioritize spending for the spring and summer. Remember that we think about sustainability broadly – environmental, economic, social, and personal wellness – on our campus, in our neighboring community, and among our institutional partners. It includes stewarding a culture of sustainability alongside of our most precious resources – Air, Land, Water, Built Environment, People, Food, and Energy.

Funding is available for:
Conference Travel: up to $750 faculty/$600 students
Course Development: $1,500
Faculty Research: $4,000
Student Research with Faculty Mentor: student stipend – $4,000; faculty stipend – $1,000
Off-Campus Internship with Community Partner – up to $4,200

“Wellness in Color” is a podcast series of the National Alliance of Mental Illness that explores perspectives on mental health to reshape the cultural language of mental illness. In the podcast young adults of color share their challenges and successes in mental health recovery and wellness. NAMI’s goal is “to reach collective cultural communities through positive reflections on wellness through discussions on why community members do not seek help for themselves or their loved one living with a mental illness.”

There will be a two part discussion. You can attend either of the two sessions for each part, but should attend both parts.

The MINNE Holocaust Fellows program selects college students to participate in a fully-paid, one-day trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. to acquire a more in-depth knowledge of the Holocaust. Fellows tour the permanent exhibits and featured exhibits, as well as meet with a museum representative. Awards come through the MINNE Fund of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, who has chosen Augsburg to be one of the select universities to participate in the program. Five Augsburg students were selected last year for the trip.
The 2020 trip will take place on April 23rd. Applications are due on February 28th and can be found at http://jewishminneapolis.org/minne/. During this session we will review the proposed learning outcomes and examine how they relate to institutional outcomes. We will discuss how the proposed GELOs can accommodate the current curriculum, and yet be flexible to proposed curricular changes. This workshop will offer faculty and staff an opportunity to comment on the proposed outcomes, and help develop preliminary plans for how and where these outcomes can be assessed.

Weekly Writing Tips from the Writing Center

1) Before a student starts writing their paper/essay, write an outline for that paper/outline. It is always better to have an idea about what to write and change it then to go into any paper without an idea. This will help eliminate writer’s block as well and being able to finish the entire paper faster as well.

2) Before submitting the final draft of the paper, take five minutes and read over the paper one more time. So many students finish their papers and want to turn it in just to get that assignment over with, however, if they read it over one more time, they will notice minor mistakes that they can fix and help the paper.

Join us on February 17th, 4pm-6pm at Hagfors108, to experiment baking with Gluten-Free and Vegan recipes.

Here we’ll engage in the fun and learning of baking gluten-free and vegan cookies! Take these recipe’s home with you to your family and friends who have these dietary restrictions.

Norwegian Professor visits Augsburg: Chapel Sermon Tuesday Feb 11

Please help us welcome this week ( Feb 10 and 11) our Norwegian Partner Per Bjørnar Grande, professor in the Religious Education Department at the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (in Bergen).

Not only will we discuss and promote inbound/outbound exchanges between our two institution, Grande will also hold a lecture—Norwegian Religion, Culture and Society—in Lori Brandt Hale’s class, and be our guest speaker in Chapel on Tuesday, February 11 at 11:30 am sharing his thoughts on “From Imitation to Scapegoating: Jesus as the Saving Victim.”

Grande’s research interests are within Cultural Anthropology and Ethics and Epistemology with a particular focus on Mimesis and Desire (inspired by the work of René Girard), and in 2009, Grande wrote the book titled “An Analysis of the Religion Nature of Mimesis and Desire in the work of René Girard.”

His late father was a gifted healer; his grandfather was also a shaman. Ger began his own spiritual journey as a healer six years ago. The Office of Academic Affairs and the Center for Teaching and Learning invite your nominations for the annual Distinguished Contributions to Teaching and Learning Awards. Augsburg annually recognizes individuals or groups that have made exemplary contributions to creating an engaging academic learning environment through awards for teaching, scholarship, or service. All faculty or full-time staff who have been employed at the university for at least three years are eligible for the awards.

Co-Curricular Assessment Workshop

Join the Co-Curricular Assessment Team for its annual Assessment Day Workshop. This year, participants will discuss the work the committee has been up to over the last year, learn about assessment results from the most up-to-date year, and engage in a professional development workshop around using data to make informed decisions around program design and implementation.

Graduate Level Learning Outcomes

We have two goals for our session on February 25th:
1. We will review the current set of graduate program learning outcomes for each program and discuss:
a. the ways in which graduate level learning outcomes map to the mission
b. the ways in which they are scaffolded at a higher level than our undergraduate learning outcomes.
2. We will identify if there are graduate level learning outcomes that are ‘shared’ by all graduate programs. Can we call them out explicitly as part of our commitment to graduate students at Augsburg?

Undergraduate General Education Learning Outcomes

A new, streamlined set of General Education Learning Outcomes (GELOs) is needed to better understand students’ learning experience in courses in the General Education curriculum. During this session we will review the proposed learning outcomes and examine how they relate to institutional outcomes. We will discuss how the proposed GELOs can accommodate the current curriculum, and yet be flexible to proposed curricular changes. This workshop will offer faculty and staff an opportunity to comment on the proposed outcomes, and help develop preliminary plans for how and where these outcomes can be assessed.
